I'm using the SIM I had in my Nexus. I never really thought about using the new one that came with my phone until I logged in to My T-Mobile and was promoted to activate the new one. Is there any point to this or can I just continue to use my old one?
The T-Mobile SIM card has the secure element in it. If you want to use ISIS, you will need that.

I am planning on using an upgrade on another line to get this phone. But the problem is that I cannot just swap sim cards because of the micro sim. I would like to activate this micro sim card on my line. I am wondering if t-mobile customer service will have to deactivate my existing sim card in order to activate the micro one.
I would also like to know if there is any other charge from upgrading to this phone at walmart, anything added to the 200 dollars.
EDIT: Damn, i always do this, mods, move this thread to Q and A if you can, thanks.

Once you activate the micro sim card the regular sim card becomes deactivated .

Thanks, i also have one other question.
If i activate the sim card on my line, which i get using the upgrade from another line. Are they going to let me activate the micro sim, or will they tell me i am not eligible because my line does not have upgrade status yet.
Also, is it possible to swap phone numbers from two different lines?

Hmm that is a good question... what happened with me was, i bought the phone on the street... went into t mobile and asked for a micro sim card. They offered to activate it there, but I said no I'll do it later via 611.
But since you are getting an upgrade from that specific line/phone number I think they will:
What ever line you are upgrading, will be the line that all of the information will be transferred to the micro sim card, making it active.
Swapping phone numbers, I am not sure. Never done that.
When you do the purchase in store tell them not to activate it.. They should be able to work with you

Well, I've done this before and I dont know if different store operate differently but they have never given me a problem.
1. If there is no rebates involve, they simply activate the phone for line that has the upgrade and renew the contract for that line and activate the phone on ur sim.
2. If there is a rebate with the phone (as there is with the S3) they would need to activate it on the phone number for the upgrade and iirc you now have to make at least one phone call on that line. Then u can ask them to switch that phone to ur sim.
Tmobile agents are generally very knowledgeable, so just tell them what you want to do and they should know how to do it. If a store tells you otherwise, then go to another one.
You can also get a micro SIM to SIM adapter

Do what I did...activate the sim card through 'my account' online, take your old sim card and punch a hole thru it using a sim cutter, then you can swap back and forth easy peasy
The phone has to be used on the line that has the upgrade.. at least a little..
Also.. are you asking about switching the phone numbers on the account because of the required data plan? Because your answer is no. You cannot use the upgrade on the other line, get the required data plan on that line, and then have them swap the phone numbers so your phone number is now on the one with the required data. ( it sounded like that was what you were asking )

Buying the device with a SIM included saves you the cost of purchasing one (it could be free by mail or between $10-20 at a T-Mobile store). However you will have to activate it, which will probably cost you.
I think I read that a T-Moble phone SIM might work, but not an AT&T SIM. The SIM would provide data only -- the Nexus 7 has no telephonic capabiliies.
A SIM is a SIM is a SIM. It doesn't care what it's put inside. What the real hangups might be, are:
1. The SIM is the wrong size. Nexus 7 takes Micro-SIM. If you have an older phone, you might still be using standard SIM sizes.
2. Your plan doesn't support tablets or tablet data.
Regardless, I don't know why you'd want to use your phone's SIM card. Seems like a LOT of hassle and a pontentially broken SIM card if you're swapping them all the time. Activating the SIM that you get when you but the Nexus 7 is free, and you get a month's worth of 2GB data to use as well, no credit card needed.

Search this forum for confirmation, but I believe it has been confirmed that t mobile will not allow you access to data on a tablet with a phone plan. You have to purchase a separate data plan intended for tablets, which on turn will not work on the phone. I think I may have read that at&t does allow you to switch, but you will have to search for confirmation. It's in one of the LTE threads.

Hey guys so I just got a new M8 through ATT. I was wondering since they shipped the phone to me can I just activate the new sim card and put it in the phone no problems? Or do I need to Activate the phone as well. I purchased and had it shipped from ATT. Just wondering since I never had to activate my nexus 4 and don't remember for my LG G2.
Thanks for the help!

As long as the sim you have is compatible with the carrier you ordered from, and your sim is currently working, you won't have any problem just putting it into a new phone.
That being said, it needs to be the right size simcard. The One M8 using a NanoSim. If your current sim is not a nanosim you'll need to go into the store and have them transfer your account information onto a new sim (this is usually done for free).

Depending on how your provider works, booting up the M8 with the new sim should deactivate your old sim if they're tied to the same number. If that's not the case, you'll likely have to transfer your account to the new sim over the phone or in store.

Yeah I knew that. Just had to make sure there wasnt some sort of activating the phone as for some reason.
Thanks!
So I have my old Nexus as a spare for the wife now as I bit the bullet and paid full retail for an S5. If I take the sim out of her phone and put it in my old one, would that make the phone active on her line? Obviously I would assume at the least I would need to do a clean flash with her sim in the phone? Would that work?
Are you serious? Phone number IS CONTAINED in the SIM card. Why on earth should it be phone-bound?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Yeah the phone number is bound to the Sim card not the phone. However sometimes you can have you old number on a new Sim card. This will render your old Sim useless and not every provider has this option..

I figured as much but just wanted to be sure in case the wife's phone goes boobs up and I need to swap it out with my old one.
So my new S9 should be arriving today or tomorrow … it’s my first SIM phone to SIM phone upgrade (previously I have Verizon with CDMA, no SIM cards).
Both phones from T-Mobile.
The S9 will come with a new T-Mobile SIM card, I’ve heard conflicting advice about this. Originally I was just planning to take the older TMO SIM out of my Galaxy S6 and plop it into the S9, but some recommend activating the new SIM instead.
I've had my S6 for 3 years and I believe it's unlocked at this point FWIW, but it's not rooted.
Any pros/cons I need to consider? Do SIM cards "wear out" or get new tech that I should take into consideration?
Thanks!
This is very similar to https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9/help/verizon-sim-card-one-s6-t3763294 but that didn't really help me :-/
I am using my old t Mobile SIM card and I am having no problem.

Thanks .. I was just trying to sort out the conflicting advice I've gotten, and whether the new SIM card would have any effect on access to new wireless features (bands etc)

Not for me it does not. I updated my wife's sim card on her iPhone a few months ago and t Mobile did not charge for it so either way not a big deal, I don't think.
