I've been searching all over but I didn't really find a simple answer. Is it possible to root or unlock a stock S3 with 4.3 update?
I have read how downgrading bricks your phone, I read that Knox prevents Odin from working properly......
If it can be done in a simple fashion please send me the link or put the instructions here.
Thanks!
I rooted my phone using cyanogen installer. This was after the 4.3 OTA. (I did the OTA update during Thanksgiving, and rooted my phone at the start of December).
If you're on stock 4.3 and you root your phone, it will trip the Knox counter and void your warranty.
I installed a pre-rooted ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 via Odin. The Odin method will wipe your phone and all of the internally-stored data and apps.
To carrier unlock the phone running stock 4.3, you'll need to buy a code. Sometimes, you have to revert to a stock ROM in order to enter the unlock code.
Well I root an s3 yesterday, and I cant find the post anymore.
on 4.3 CF root method didn't work.
So I tried a method from a post that I can't find.
Basically, from the stock 4.3 Bell rom :
- install samsung usb drivers
- flash the latest TWRR ( I used : openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-d2att.tar) via odin 3.7 through PDA box.
- Then I put on the internal storage : UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip and DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V1.0.zip.
- reboot in recovery TWRP (vol up and home)
- flash those two zip.
- reboot
and I was rooted, go to the play store and update superSU.
I run titanium backup to be sure, and it worked.
For the unlock, I didnt find anything, I guess we have to pay the unlock code, which is kind of expensive, around 20 - 30$ usd.
My htc one S was only 5$ ...
Thanks for the help!
I think I will wait it out more!
this method worked fine for galaxy s3 at&t i747 for root

Now i woudlike to remove root finally.
*the counter of the new Knox is set now to 0X1 but personnally i dont really mind.
The problem is that i woudlike to remove the root. I dont whant to downgrade i like 4.3 jellybean. (Anyway Att s3 cant be downgraded it will result to a soft brick)
I dont know how to remove the root and i woudlike to learn how to do it on my Samsung galaxy s3.
Thanks
(i was wondering about if i download the 4.3 stock Rom and i flash it will odin will it brick even if its on the same bootloader? because thats not downgrading...)

This will get you to the 4.4.2 stock update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789917
It depends on you having a custom recovery. It does provide a way to go back to the stock recovery once you are updated. I believe the same devolper has also posted the most recent update to NJ1 in a separate thread.
wifi not working now, and didnt update.

it let me flash from mjb or whatever to the ne4. all that did was **** up my wifi. switch it to on and it just goes right back off. plus the files for the stock recoveries were spam.

Check that your bootloader and modem/baseband are matching in version number, this seems to be important in some of the newer kernels. If they do not match, flash the modem to correspond to the bootloader. If they are matching you may want to reinstall the modem on the off chance that it flashed incorrectly the first time.
Since you didn't mention any issues with calling or data I take it that the correct APNs are installed.
I don't understand why you call the stock recovery files spam. The link at 4. leads directly to the androidfilehost page to download the file. The other is an attachment to directly download the file from xda. To each his own.
I swtiched to t-mobile from ATT, expecting that I can call ATT and get an unlock code fast. However, they moved to some stupid online unlock code request method, which after 5 days, has not resulted in any more than "we are currently working on it."
So after reading more and more about unlocking my S3, it seems like everyone is having problems unlocking 4.3, and there's talk about how a firmware downgrade or root will brick a OTA 4.3 phone.
My phone is now rooted with a custom bootloader, all done AFTER upgrading to OTA 4.3. not sure if it'll help anyone out, but here's what I did:
1. started with official att 4.2 rom installed, completely stock phone.
2. tried the debug menu sim unlock method, did not have the appropriate menu, someone suggested to upgrade to latest firmware.
3. upgraded to OTA 4.3
4. tried debug sim unlock, still no initializ option
5. Installed custom recovery via odin
6. Did not install due to recovery/bootloader override files in 4.3 rom, also could not rename/delete these files
7. Used CF-auto-root to root phone, using the latest odin, NOT 1.85 as linked in the CF-auto-root thread
8. Used the samsung toolbox and flashed touch recovery
9. Updated SuperSU to latest version using apk file, backed up relevant data using Titanium, disabled KNOX, etc.
10. Loaded StockMOD ROM | AT&T 4.3 UCUEMJ2 onto SD card, and flashed new rom using touch recovery
*I was trying a ton of things last night, so there may have been an omitted step here, but this is essentially what I did.
Phone now rooted and running StockMOD 4.3 with no problems.
BUT IT'S STILL SIM LOCKED!! <- need help with this
my experience is only unlocking from 4.1.1 stock, then updating. after re-reading your post this method may not work, and it sounds like you already tried it.

Afraid it may remain locked until you actually have the unlock code. So far, nobody has posted a (credible) report of being able to unlock for free once you've taken the 4.3 update. Unfortunately, the advice you got on upgrading to 4.3 was wrong because you could have safely downgraded from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 where the free unlock option would have been available.
Your best bet would, therefore, to put more pressure on AT&T for the unlock code. If you are eligible, they should oblige.
In order to enter the unlock code, you need to be running and stock ROM.
^ I was just about to ask that... I'll need to get the stock ROM again now...
So I got the stock rom, and I used touch recovery to install the zip... but it said it failed??
So I tried this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
Forgot which one I used.. I think the CWM version. Flashed w/ Touch Recovery, and the unlock code worked! woo hoo!!
Now to re-root my phone and install all my apps again... T_T

Now that you have stock 4.3, try Method 2 in the thread below to root ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
I was able to root just fine. Thanks though.
Actually, the touch recovery asked if I wanted to install supersu right after I flashed the original 4.3 recovery, and I said yes. This still allowed me to unlock since it was still stock att rom. I'm now running OSE 4.4. =)
Astana... what pin# did you use?

If you're asking for an unlock code, its different for every device. Based on the imei from what I understand.

I recently received replacement note 2 from T Mobile. In the time that it took for me to get my new phone my computer was stolen. Is there a way to unlock my bootloader and root my phone without a PC? Please share.

Once you have updated your phone with the official 4.3 update, you will never again be able to unlock your bootloader or flash custom firmware. You will, however, be able to root your phone and install odin flashable stock roms or rooted stock roms. You can do this with odin or mobile odin, but i cannot think of a way to do it without a pc, because even if you use mobile odin you will need to first to root it with saferoot i believe (which requires a PC if i remember correctly), and PC odin doesnt require root and you can use it to flash a pre-rooted image but it does require a PC.
If i were you id just spend 2 or 3 bucks and get an hour in a cyber cafe, installl saferoot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758&highlight=s3 and then download the image for your phones carrier and flash it in odin or mobile odin.

that is not exactly true. you can flash custom firmwares with 4.3 bootloader. but I don't think there is currently a way to root 4.3 without a pc.
Moved to Q&A.
Title says all, i have an att SGH-I747 and i tried to install a custom rom without the phone being rooted (didnt know that was a requirement) and the original stock was 4.3 and i was trying to get it to 4.1 . after doing extensive research ive tried countless different files and such to restock the phone but nothing has helped because on odin, when i hit start, it goes unsuccessful to do auth being bad or something like that. so if someone wants to help a fellow brother out please dont hesitate. add me on skype godlypk101
Can you get into download mode or recovery?
FYI: if you were on stock 4.3 bootloader, trying to get back to stock 4.1.1 can brick your phone.
yes i can
Here's what I would do to at least get a working ROM on the phone:
1) copy the latest version of d2lte cm11 to your external SD card: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2lte;
2) flash the latest tar.md5 version of Philz Touch from here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_...Edition/d2lte/ in the PDA box of Odin;
3) reboot to recovery and flash CM11.
ok, now what if i dont have an ext sd card :S
You had the stock 4.3 ROM on your phone before attempting to downgrade to 4.1.1, correct?
If that's the case, this may help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660
yes, will try that method to see if it fixes anything.
in that pack theres 5 files and they start with, AP, BL, CP, CSC, D2 (Pit) where i put these on odin?
UPDATE: Put all the files in the correct spot, started the fix in odin and lets hope it works
ok so now that the phone is working, what are the steps im supposed to take in order to unlock this bad boy? should i refer to a method on xda on custom roms or should i go buy a code from a third party website?
So your phone booted on stock 4.3?
If the phone ever had the 4.3 bootloader, you cannot unlock the phone for free. You will have to purchase an unlock code.
I haven't tried but I think of your rooted then use cm boot loader then mount all partition and wipe then use cm to load new or old system. Think of it like a pc format then install. Simple
Hi,
First time poster...
I recently upgraded from a rooted HTC One V to a Samsung S4 Mini (I9190) on JB 4.2.2 - firmware I9190XXUBNA1.
I tried rooting with towelroot v3 - device not supported.
CF Auto Root only lists a KItKat 4.4.2 I9190UBUCNG1 file on the site - can I use this to root or will it brick my phone? Or must I first upgrade to KitKat using a 4.4.2 firmware from Sammobile.com since the upgrade is not yet available in my country? I am really not concerned about tripping KNOX.
Another question - how do I determine if the bootloader is locked?
Having a phone without root is just not the same... Any advice will be appreciated

flash this recovery with ODIN
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2678420
then enter the recovery and go into the reboot menu and click reboot, then it'll ask you if you want to root your phone, then click yes. and you're done. if you don't have the supersu app installed automatically on your system afterwards, download it.
