I wanted to update to 4.3 on my ATT note 2, but while I was on 4.1.2 stock rooted, I took away the update server thing, so I Odin'd it back to stock 4.1.2 and updated to 4.3. I did the CF Auto root thing, but knox is screwing everything up, so I tried to re-flash in Odin the 4.1.2 and now I get a screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again" after the 4.1.2 odin update FAILS. Now, I can boot into download mode, but I cannot boot into recovery mode, and since the firmware update through Kies failed, I can't do a firmware emergency recovery BECAUSE I can't boot into recovery mode...Someone please...please help i'm freaking out..

Odin the 4.3 files and it should come back. 4.3 bootloader doesn't play terribly nice with downgrading.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

So I was trying to root my Galaxy S3 and for some reason it failed and my phone reboots to a screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies". But I tried Kies and it wont recognize my phone. My phone had android 4.3 on it. I also tried using a 4.1.2 stock rom on odin and I get an error saying "sw rev check fail" on my phone and the flash fails. Please help me im desperate at this point.
If you had 4.3 OTA and tried to flash 4.1.2 its a good possibility that you bricked your device. Can you get into download mode? If so try to flash the 4.3 tar file in Odin. Good luck

if I can get into download mod is it fixeable..I did the same thing as the poster above
So I just Odin Stock 4.3 and then I applied the update.zip to get it to 4.4.2. After that I tried flashing a ROM and eventually I just stupidly wiped my phone and I have no firmware on it. I went to Odin to get it back to stock 4.3 but due to Knox, I was not able to and now I'm stuck on the "Connect to kies" message. What do I do? I'm at loss here ;(. Please help. And the phone is not showing up on Odin...do I wait for Samsung to release a 4.4.2 tar?

Do you have custom recovery installed?
If so just put any ROM on your SD Card, and flash that in recovery. The phone will boot right up and will be working again. From there you can do whatever you want.

Nope, otherwise I wouldn't be here . Stuck on that "Connect to Kies" message :/
I have an SGH-1747 on AT&T. I already had the OTA 4.3 update on my phone and I wanted to simply wipe all of the apps off so it was a fresh 4.3 install as it was running slow. I went into the settings and did a factory wipe thinking that would wipe it back to original 4.3 but when it rebooted it hung on the AT&T screen.
I went into Recovery mode and wiped everything to factory refresh from there hoping that would fix it and it made it worse. Now when I reboot i simply get the Firmware upgrade encountered an issue and it asks me to use Kies to go into recovery mode. I did that multiple times and it never worked. Simply kept failing.
I am able to get into Download Mode but I can't seem to find a ODIN version of the 4.3 that I can try to flash it back to. I would love to go back to a 4.2 version if that would work but I stopped before I made it worse. In download mode it says
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME SGH-I747
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES (2 COUNTS) - Early on with 4.1 i had flash up to 4.2 using ODIN but i have on official AT&T release since
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
SYSTEM STATUS: OFFICIAL
QUALCOM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE
WARRANTY BIT = 1
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 2
Any advice out there? I am thinking I soft bricked my phone but I am not sure?
PLEASE HELP!
There is no stock 4.3 AT&T ROM that can be flashed via Odin. You cannot downgrade the bootloader to an older version.
You can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486

Thanks for the info. I actually got it fixed by giving in and going to best buy and the Samsung guys actually were able to flash it to a fresh 4.3 image. They knew it had a non factory image on it in the past based on the counter but they still did it. I'm all fixed now which was awesome.
Was trying to get the phone back to stock so I can upgrade. I followed the instructions on the How to Return a Device Back to Stock thread, downloaded the stock TAR, rebooted and tried to boot into recovery but it would not let me. I then tried to boot into the device as normal and now I have a screen with the message Firmware upgrade encountered an issue, Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. Any suggestions? I downloaded and tried but cannot connect via Kies 2.6.. I can still get into the device via ODIN. Suggestions?
What firmware did you use to flash? Flash NH7 if you haven't
A little back-story and a possible solution.

I've never updated my S4 past the MDL firmware. I encountered this problem a few months back when I wanted to revert back to 100% stock MDL. I had updated my baseband/modem though to NB4, yet still obviously had the MDL bootloader. I was scared to death that I had bricked my phone because nothing I did would let me boot past that screen. I couldn't get to recovery, normal boot, nothing... the phone would just automatically go to that screen: Firmware upgrade encountered an issue.
What I did was simply revert my baseband/modem back to MDL. Once that was done successfully I was able to flash the MDL firmware again and booted right up. If this might be your issue, you will have to know which baseband/modem you were using and which bootloader version you were running before you attempted to flash stock. It should go without saying that the main idea here is to have your baseband and bootloader versions match before flashing the firmware in Odin.
Seems a little odd to me as the stock Odin-flashable firmware includes the modems and all... I'm just passing along what worked for me when I had that problem.

I'll repost from another hoping this explains it as it is the only thing I can think of.. but it worked.
TLDR: installed stock TAR not stock TMO TAR, updated (stupid me) to 4.3, wrong baseband and recovery did not go back to stock using the stock TAR and the Philz Touch recovery would not have flown to return the phone. I figured it out with some help though!
Thank you, that was it. I returned it to stock after following the instructions in the how-to thread but something happened and it boned the recovery where it would reboot into the device every time. Being they need to inspect the phone and in my case they wiped it in front of me when I turned it in it had to be fixed. The device received the updates from TMO and stupid of me I installed them so it was now 4.3 hence the reason I could not install the stock 4.2 anymore. I found the stock firmware you mentioned above and installed it and it fixed it but tripped the counter. I installed the updates from TMO and it was enough to pass inspection. I was able to go into recovery at the store, show the clerk while he was dicking around with the paperwork for the Note I was about to buy. I reached over, showed him "look here it is in recovery and here is wipe data factory reset okay?" and wiped it. He muttered okay thanks or something like that and we were golden. Heck if he could have read the counter anyways it is so flipping tiny.
Thanks for the suggestions!
Hi Folks,
I tried to update my gt-n5100(unrooted) to 4.4.2 through OTA and this stopped after 25% installing, then I tried Kies, but it got stuck at 0%.
I downloaded the firmware from sammobile and used odin to flash it...however it got stuck system img. After three (!?) hours I unplugged the phone and when I tried to go in recovery it said "Firmware upgrade encountered as issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".
I tried to connect to kies, but it fails to connect (maybe because it's in debugging mode). I've read that you should flash it with it's original firmware, but I can't find 4.1.2 anywhere.....at sammoble it only lists 4.4.2
I'm out of options...please help me, without this tablet I don't have a phone and a work tablet....
Kies 2 does not recognize 4.4.2, you must upgrade to kies 3.
Plus you may have not used Odin 3.09 which may fail during update. Once you go 4.4.2 you cannot go back. Don't try to flash 4.1.2 or 4.2.2.
I used kies 3...but to no avail.
I flashed with odin 3.09...... Do I have to repartition my phone with a pit file?
