Im sure this has come up a few times but I cannot find the answer...I went from 4.1.2 mc2 to 4.3 and everything is running smooth as butter, but my files such as music and even the newest rom zip is still on my internal storage taking up so much space but I cannot see them through es file explorer or through my pc to delete them and free up space. When I flashed, I wiped cache, dalvic, factory reset then formatted system data and cache in that order, 3 times each and that's how ive always done it. I restored my backup of 4.1.2 (which after the fact I read that's the ultimate no no) but all files are there and the phone worked like it always had. I did flash 4.3 again and im still running it with no issues but I can't figure out how to see my old files from 4.1.2...any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!!! GO BRONCOS!!!

Your older files from 4.1.2 are stored in the /data/media folder. Newer Android versions now store internal data on /data/media/0. Use a file explorer with root permission features like Root Explorer to find and copy those files.

I tried out ES file explorer and I couldn't get it to recognize the folder. I do not think it offers the full features that root explorer dose.

Should work. It doesn't depend on busybox so.. give it a try.

Update: Added an option to remount the system dir for r/o access.
Anyone got an idea why this isn't working on my phone (just like every other mounting script or tool)? I got an I9000 running JM8 and stock kernel Voodoo. It doesn't report an error, but I still can't delete anything from system folder.

Interesting. I assume you have busybox installed? It comes with the standard update.zip rooting method. If so, it surely is a kernel thing. I'm running jm8 myself on a Sgs I9000, and I've no problems.
Using this since you released the first version, works flawless so far
Thanks alot!
I just realized that there does seem to be a way to write to system partition on my phone: titanium backup is deleting unwanted system apps just fine. :-/
Great program, solved a LOT of problems for me.
Hmmm... further investigation showed: this works just fine for me, as do some other tools. It worked by using a terminal emulator, which I consider way to cumbersome for file management. I thought I could just make the system partition rewritable and use any tool capable of browsing there to e.g. delete unwanted crap (like most of the ringtones). But it doesn't work that way, the tool still seems to need SU rights as well.
So I have to ask you appelflap: what is the primary purpose of this tool? If the file manager needs to be root capable on itself, I only know of Root Explorer (which can make system RW just fine, but costs money) or EStrongs File Explorer (which asks for some outrageous access rights). On a terminal emulator or ADB, I can just remount by adding a single line. Please give me a use case for your tool, is it just to save writing/pasting a single line?

I wrote it for the newer Froyo versions. I needed it to for Root Explorer to work (it didn't remount the system directory for r/w access at that time, but I saw that there's an update, so maybe it does now?)
@appelflap - thanks for the app, works great. One question, how can I change the name of the app to appear in the app list? Like "Mount R/W" for short, because is kind of long and I have a thing with design to fit in
Thanks!

So I have the Kindle app on my phone and am trying to copy some ebooks I have on my computer to my Galaxy Nexus to read with the Kindle app. I never had any problems before on my old phone that have SD cards, but with the Galaxy nexus I cannot see any files inside the \Android\data\ directory, which is where I need to copy the files to in order for the Kindle app to read the files. Anyone have any ideas for how I can copy the ebooks to my phone? They are all in .mobi files if that matters
The Kindle app reads the books from the Kindle folder on the faked sd card, not the /android/data folder.
put your mobi files in /mnt/sdcard/kindle
Or you can just email them to your @kindle.com address... If you have a Kindle.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Thanks. The "kindle" folder seems to be hidden as well. I can see it in ES File Explorer, but it is not viewable in any way on my computer. I would do the email way, but that costs money and it gives a new attached email address every time I install a new ROM so I dont know if the files I upload would even properly carry over to a new ROM.
When I browse the kindle directory in ES file explorer, it simply says no items are there when viewing the folder. On my computer, nothing in \Android\data is there and the kindle folder on the sd card root is not there either. Many app folders are not there actually, just user stuff and things I created. I really hate how Samsung mounts the phone to the computer. This would be so much simpler if it just mounted as a proper removable device instead of a dumb "media device"
Not hard to find at all on my device look at the attached pic. Use calibre program if your having trouble. Its an awesome ebook manager and its completely free. Google it.

I use File manager from Rhythm Software. It is a free app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...lt#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5yaG1zb2Z0LmZtIl0.
Once you open the app, the home folder should be the fake SD card with a path of /mnt/sdcard. the Kindle folder should be in there. See my screenshot.
I am running the stock 4.0.4 ROM. Assuming you are also running stock, it should be in the same location for you.
As a plus, File Manager can also access windows shared folders, so it is easy to copy files from the computer onto the phone over my home wifi network.

Yes this is fine. I am using Nexus 5, android 4.4. The kindle folder is visible while checking from file managers on the device. But it is not visible when I connect my nexus to a PC as a USB.
NOTICE:
THIS IS ONLY MY RESULT, AND THIS IS THE POSSIBLE WAY TO SOLVE IT. IT DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN WORK PROPERLY ON YOUR PHONE!
Sorry for poor English
S1:
1.Using USB Cable connect your phone and the computer
2.Choose Disk Drive Mode
3.Copy all the files in the SD Card to your computer
4.On the computer, format HTC STORAGE. Name: HTC STORAGE, File system: FAT32, Cluster: If you wanna better speed, choose 32k or 64k, if you wanna store more files, choose 4k
5.Copy your files back to HTC STORAGE
6.Extract your current rom's zip file.
7.Found a new folder under /system named "lost+found"
8.Pack all the files to zip, copy it to SD Card and flash it.
S2:
Just delete "lost+found" folder under /system and then format your sd card
And for Developers, try to add "lost+found" folder under /system to your rom and test whether it will eat free space or not.
As for me, adding "lost+found" folder in the rom and removing it won't let your free space loose again.
I have copied rom.zip(about 500MB) four times and reboot my phone several times. My free space didn't loose
Trust me
And here is the result.

Original lost+found is created by system and it will eat your free space. You can also delete it and free spaces won't loose any more.

delete "lost and found" Folder under /system

copy files back to SD-Card
then reboot the Phone
Copy a 1,2 GB Movie File to SD

I think you can just delete that folder and then format sd card
thats my problem... i cant delete it...xD
using diskuseage from play on my SD i scanned my SD and there is a section called "system data" which starts off at 1024 MB (i formatted from inside the phone to start the test), its this section on the SD that goes up in size on my phone.
i deleted lost+found from my /system and restarted i then mounted my phone to the PC formatted and copied my files to my SD i then unmounted the USB using the phone (no safe remove from PC) and "system data" is now gone.
I then restarted my phone just to check and it's still not there
I will keep scanning it from time to time and report back so far so good no lost space.
Deleted 3Gb of films, copied everything over on to my comp.
Deleted lost+found
Before format
Format FAT32, 32k, added back 3Gb of films that were taken off, reboot into recovery, mount sd card

guys i got another solution working fine to me:
backup your data on sdcard
format your sdcard with 16kb cluster size
copy your data back and do stuff like flashing a rom and see if the problem is solved.
you do this because the sdcard was with 32kb cluster initially(for those which are not with 32kb, this solution may not work). and normally it should be 16kb by a 32gb storage. so maybe you can also give it a shot. goodluck! btw i found this on One X Q&A thread.

Been there, done that but the problem came back so....
I installed a zip enabling custom boot animation, played with it and then installed a zip that removes the option. Now when i go to my internal SD card, i see a folder "anbech" with 1 file in it. I tried deleting it in the stock file manager, root explorer, and on my pc. It will not go away. I cant change it permission and when i edit the file name or script, it always changes back to how it was before. Can anyone help me to delete it? Doing a factory reset didn't remove it.

If you use TWRP v2.5.0.0, there is a file manager which you can use to delete the file. Since you're in recovery, Android isn't using the file. I pointed this out to people wanting to delete the Morphology folder, which has also has proven difficult to delete otherwise.
Hope this helps.

I'm not really sure, to be honest. I haven't used CWM regularly since my OG Evo. Play around in the settings and see if they have a file manager.
If that doesn't work and you don't mind spending an extra 20 minutes on it, you can always install TWRP then re-flash CWM. It's easy to do with the flashable zips from Naddict. All you have to do is boot into recovery, flash the TWRP zip, delete the file, then flash the CWM zip. It should take less than 10 minutes, but let's be conservative in our estimate and say 20 minutes.

You don't need to switch, just use aroma file manager

That file is actually the most important zip I keep on my sdcard. It's an awesome file manager, and it works on TWRP or CWM (I've used it on both)

With the Aroma file manager, you actually aren't installing anything. You're just running the software on your phone without accessing the Android operating system. Once you reboot your phone it'll go back to your normal operating system. It's actually really nifty and I'm going to keep it on my sd card like CNexus said.

Check for your content in 'sdcard/0/' directory.
These are the options I can get to.
If I select sdcard/0 it takes me too sdcard/emulated/0 as shown below.
In cwm if select install from internal sdcard the files I am trying to get to to delete are visible. But all my files on my device are in the 0 folder which is all I can get to on my device. Its like I need to go up another level but cant.

sdcard0 and sdcard0/emulated/0 are same, try it by moving your files outside from 0 folder to sdcard0/ if you got loop folder means '0/0/0'. First verify you've given root access to ES File Exp (From side pane >> root explorer). And if still didn't unable to move goto root directory '/' there you'll find 'sdcard0' directory, give a try with that.
This has happened to me before. Usually it's because of a bad backup due to lack of storage. What I did was delete the failed back up in CWM and you'll get the space back. For some reason, if you're backing up your phone on the internal SD, CWM will save it in some folder that's only accessible to CWM in recovery mode. Hope that helps.
