Well, first off I'd start by reading the rules. This is in no way, shape of form development. It's a question, so it goes in the Q&A section. I'd think some one with 650+ posts and 4+ years would know this.
Second, assuming you're S-OFF (which I'm pretty sure you are) you can just fastboot flash the stock recovery (links are around; search), take the update, fastboot flash your recovery of choice, then flash your su management app of choice.
Edit: and this is assuming the update doesn't patch HBOOT. You're best bet is to look at santod's thread. He generally maintains the stock images. Be sure to read and search.

Well...your first mistake was not making a nandroid back up of your stock rom..that would solve this problem quick. As with anything "computer" related always make a back up before changing everything

While this is good advice, it's not really a useful post to respond to this question about. I'm researching the same type of issue for someone and this response has only been useful as an annoyance.
u do a clean install? if so try toggle signature..that worked for me before

Couple things,
If you install the official OTA update, you will lose root, and will not be able to get it back. Its not currently rootable, and AFAIK, people are having trouble even downgrading from the official Gingerbread OTA in order to root. So bottom line, official GB OTA is a bad idea if you want root.
Second, the official GB update is posted in the Development section, so you don't need to mess with going back to stock in order to get the OTA, if you still want to install the official GB update.
Third, there is a pre-rooted version of the GB update, also in the Development section. So THAT is probably what you really want.
Forth, the RUU you are trying to install is not the stock T-Mobile ROM. Its a stock Desire Z ROM (with Sense). Again, you will lose root if you flash an official ROM, but this one (1.34) is actually rootable. You should still be able to install it anyway, so I'm not sure what the issue is. You're trying to run the RUU from your computer, right? Its not one you flash from ROM Manager.

As of right now T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 known as SGH-T999UVLEM is upgrading to a newer Version which is SGH-T999UVLH2
I don't think the over the air (OTA) mode is working right now because I did many tries and it keep saying device up to date so if you want to try it us KIES. if you version of KIES is not up to date you will have to update it first then you will be able to upgrade the phone.
it will take about 10 to 15 minutes of your time and it will depend on your connection.
everything like root will be gone after the update. :victory:
ok after you update, you will be able to go back and use the same method you use to to root the older version and install a different boot.
mine is working fine I don't find any problem yet.
This doesn't belong here

Is there a CWM flash-able update yet? And yes, I have looked, but may have missed it.
My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

I'm not sure if he has a custom recovery but I'm assuming if he was able to accept ota's and install them fine he must have stock recovery. I'll have to check and see a lil later as he's at work now.

Sprints update system sucks......As for odin, you select the file you want to flash and click start......pretty stupid proof if you ask me. There is a .tar for the most recent update and the jellybean leak available in the development section.

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. But anyways thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to try and get this done tonight. Even though we both going for the note 2 in just a matter of days

Hello,
My phone is rooted but ROM is stock. I don't generally flash anything and just stick to removing bloatware.
I installed TWRP and now I cannot get the latest official OTA AT&T update since the update load fails due to not having stock recovery. I have been searching online and cannot figure out how to get stock recovery.
I have been able to locate a supposed stock zip ROM for this phone. Can I just somehow flash this ZIP to return my phone to stock.
On previous phones I have been able to do a factory reset, which I have done several times on this phone today, in order to get it back to stock and accept OTA updates. This TWRP seems extremely invasive and I cannot get rid of it.
Thanks for any help

I gave up and ended up just flashing cleanrom 3.5. Didn't wipe, kept all of my apps and data. I recommend this route if, like me, you want to keep stock kernel and tw.

I am the original poster. My phone would not flash the stock ATT rom that I downloaded somewhere. It could have been a bad ROM.
I could only end up getting into recovery and download mode. I did something to erase the entire operating system.
The guys over at TWRP or at least the guys on the message board got me through it. I ended up flashing the 3.5 clean rom. I never flashed a rom before only rooted. i also flashed the new modem zip as well. So far so good I guess.
Im going to have to figure out how to do an entire backup of my phone so that next time I can just restore it.
Thanks for the replies

Boot in to recovery (it's now an option from the power button) and follow the very easy buttons for backup. Select everything for an entire system backup (7 checks, I believe). Future backups can be just your data and apps if you want.

I have spent about a day researching this and I'm still fuzzy on a lot of things. I will try to explain what I know and list my questions in as brief an order as possible.
1. I want to run arhd 10.2 or convert to aGPe ROM
2. I need s-off to do so
3. I can't use firewater because I just got a replacement m8 that has an updated HBOOT and will not work (whelp message)
3. Before I got on #firewater irc channel I read that flashing custom kernel sometimes helped get firewater running.
- I am currently running elemental X
4. Sunshine app will not work because I'm not on a custom kernel (sunshine gives an error saying I need to be on a stock ROM, which I am. I can only think that the kernel is causing this)
5. I have seen several condescending replies in the m8 q&a thread about flashing a stock ROM to get back to stock. All the "stock roms" have updated firmware and Im afraid to update without s-off.
So, here are my questions
1. Can someone help me find a stock kernel? I don't even know if kernels are compatible with certain firmware, I'm on 1.54.x.
2. Can I just go to a modified "stock ROM" in the at&t m8 thread? Some of them say s-off is required, but ALL of them seem to be running newer firmware than mine and I am under the impression that updating the firmware requires s-off.
3. I'd prefer to not ruu because I also can't get my titanium backups to save to my external SD but would this be my easiest option at this point?
These might each have easy answers, but trying yo piece all of them together has got me a little overwhelmed. If anyone could pop in and help me make heads or tails of this, I'd be very grateful
Looks like I'm not crazy, and it's a little confusing.. I'm so confused by all of this

Find a 1.54 backup, extract the kernel and flash it. Then make sure you have your stock recovery. The closer to stock you are the better chance sunshine will work...they state that on their page.
Good luck!
Sent from my M8 that I finally figured out how to update.
Does it matter if it's an at&t ROM or an international ROM? As far as I know they're the same kernel right? Thank you for your help btw

I don't know how to extract a kernel room a rom and the only goes u can find are how to put a kernel into another rom, not flash it stand alone. Going to keep searching

Well I don't have a laptop so I guess I can't make the kernel a flashable zip. If I'm going to have to borrow a friends computer I might as well just flash an ruu. I can't find a sick kernel anywhere. There's one in the AT&T development thread that's a stock kernel with done tweaks but I get an access denied message when I try to workload it so I guess I'm screwed for now.
Will update if make any headway and anyone else is curious about the journey
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
You don't need a flashable zip man...you have fastboot. If you have the kernel.img (or whatever the image file is called) you can flash it with fastboot using a computer (or flashify)
fastboot flash boot kernel.img
Is that what you're trying to do?
Sent from my M8 that I finally figured out how to update.
