Yikes S-on and locked? I don't know if you can flash an RUU in this state, can you try? Hopefully someone answers, I haven't tried and I'm also not sure :-\
Can you execute the command:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
and put the phone into RUU mode? If so, then you should be able to flash the firmware from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485319
the one you want is this one: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319196969 (stock odex)

Thanks i will try this when i get home

No luck i can do the oem fastboot ruu thing but when flash firmware i get unknown partion error
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

What were you doing that got you stuck in boot loader? Were you previously S-Off or unlocked?

I was trying to flash recovery then my wife hit wrong button on toolkit and ended up locking it snd s off
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

You mean setting it back to s-on...
my guess is you need to find the encrypted RUU from somewhere. You may be able to find the decrypted RUU then you can use a tool to make it encrypted (ruuveal?) That should let it run when you are locked and s-on

I downloaded ruuveal but not sure jow to work it

Unroot

Hey quick question, what's the easiest way to unroot? Trying to help a friend, he is noob, and I don't know much about the EVO, any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Unrooting
1. http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever ; Scroll down to the FAQs, then download the unrevoked s-on zip. This places the security back on your phone, because rooting makes it s-off, and if s-on, quickest way to tell your phone was rooted.
2. Flash that file from recovery, then boot back into the bootloader [vol+down while turning phone on] and verify until its s-on.
3. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip ; rename that file to PC36IMG, place on the root of your sdcard [not in a folder] then flash it in the bootloader. When the scan that normally does nothing, it'll detect that file. Apply the update then reboot. That's a stock 3.70 firmware file, it'll take you back to stock, unrooted, s-on.
Thanks, would it also work if he just went to updates, and got the new gb update, would u run into problems going that though if it even worked?

If he did that, he could brick his device or lose root permanently.

Good luck, and no problem.
Kinda nice when people are helpful huh?! These guys at XDA Rock!!

Is there any hope??? (soft brick)

ok... so my aunt brought me her phone that she said she bricked... first thing first, its just a soft brick. i can turn the device on normally ( in which it just stays at the htc bootsplash.. i can also boot the phone into bootloader.. i cant go into recovery. when i select restart bootloader in fastboot it freezes the phone up... i have came to a conclusion that she wiped her recovery out completely. heres the problem where i need help..
1. the phone is ****locked**** , and when i try to use the htc dev. to unlock bootloader it will not let me select "yes" to unlock bootloader.
2. s-on
3. usb debugging is disabled im assuming...
4. hboot = 0.98.0000
5. radio: 1.09.01.1111
is there any hope for this phone???
Have you tried fast boot flash a recovery or using an ruu
when i try to flash recovery via flash boot it gives me an error.. htc cant sign the file properly..!!!??? all the ruu methods ive seen require usb debugging to be enabled ive tried them anyways with no luck...
Use the downgrade method in the development section.
Sent from my KangBang'd out vivow
doesnt the downgrade method require you to have usb debugging enabled??? my phone will not boot...
So I guess there is no hope for this phone... I can't get anyone to respond... :/

With a locked bootloader? I don't see how it could work, but you might as well try the downgrade tool, it can't hurt.

I would try flashing a recovery through the bootloader again. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185490 check out that thread for more info. I don't think its gonna work because you aren't s-off but its worth a try. I have seen some hboot flash able ruu's before. I will look around after work.

Google search "vivow signed ruu" there are hundreds of posts there with downloads. A signed ruu is an ruu just as it comes from htc. Because it is signed you can flash it through bootloader with s-on.
You will need a newer or equivalent version to the one on the phone or it won't flash.
You will just need to find one with a good download now.
Sent from my ICS Dinc2
Hmmm
Like has been said the RUU posted by CondemnedSoul should work. Just make sure its named PG32IMG. Dont add .zip or anything as you may not be able to see extensions if you dont have then enabled. Once its named PG32IMG and you put it on your SD card by itself not in a folder.
Once you do this pull the battery for a second and put it back. Now Volume down and power to boot bootloader. Give it a sec and see if it will load the image. If it does load it will give you the option to install by pressing volume up. It should start to install and should fix the problem. I have used the file before on my older Inc 2 so I know it works. Hope you get it sorted out.
So I get the ruu to read finally and it freezes on this screen...

[Q] Stock Unrooted Desire Z restarting

Hi, I have a Desire Z that keeps restarting itself almost. I can go as far as opening the app drawer before it restarts again. I'm trying to figure out how to fix it or at least recover/backup files from the phone. Can anyone help?
if I flash a custom recovery/root my phone, will that wipe everything on the phone? I am mainly concerned with backing up all my data. The stock recovery shows phone with red triangle, dont know what that means. Please help.

Tried booting in safe mode, still the same thing. The phone reboots as soon as the launcher is done loading. I think its an issue with either the launcher or there's a conflict in android/sense which is causing a crash. Still trying out different things.
Edit:
Since I have never recieved OTA update for this phone, I believe I'm still on RUU_Vision_BellMobility_WWE_1.34.666.1_Radio_12.28 b.60.140e_26.03.02.18_M2. I have adb set up, is there a way to confirm I can safely S-OFF/root?
Edit 2:
Did a factory reset - no changes, still rebooting
Edit 3:
Seems like USB debug is not turned on my phone, I tried my gt-i900 and can see it using adb devices but not when i plug in my Desire Z
Edit 4:
While in stock recovery, I have a phone with a red triangle, and adb shows device as offline. At least I can confirm that adb is working with my DZ. Now to figure out how to push files to it
After the factory reset you won't get any of your data back, but you need an os so you can root. Find the latest ruu for your phone and fllash it through fastboot or bootllader as a pc10img

is fastboot the same as adb? for example, when using gfree do i just replace adb push with fastboot push?
Edit: Nvm, figured it out, now I need to find the proper RUU for my phone, which one should i be using?
Edit: Stupid question above, I already mentioned which ruu i was using so I'll try to flash that. brb
Nope, adb is similar to fastboot but different, read my thread on it as if you own any HTC phones (and various others) its a must to learn. You'll find it here in the general section
You will use fastboot not to root but to flash the latest ruu as you need to have adb access and this means you'll need an os that's working.
fastboot oem rebootRUU
This is the command you will run in cmd or terminal but read up on my thread to understand more

I read your thread, very helpful. I had one question though, do i need an oem ruu to run the command fastboot oem rebootRUU? I'm just confused as to whether I need to root first, flash the hboot, or flash the ruu. I also have the stock recovery so when do i flash the cwmr?
1st you need the ruu, I believe nipqer has most on his server found in one of his threads. You will use fastboot to flash this. This will rewrite all your firmware and software and hopefully produce a functional os so you can get adb access
Once this is done, follow the xda wiki to root your phonephone

Followed the instructions (ran into some trouble with chmod command returning "Operation not permitted" - had to start all over again with fastboot flash oemRUU) and now I'm rooted. Time to install some custom roms. Thanks demkantor, your fastboot tip and thread got me through this!
I'm glad you're up and running! I suggest to check out my is this a brick thread as it may help know what to look for if you run into trouble in the future

What did the previous owner flash? (run?) Are you able to select and boot into Recovery from the Bootloader? If so, boot into recovery and Factory Reset or re-flash your ROM.

Try reflashing TWRP recovery in fastboot and see if you can then boot into recovery. Or you can try to reflash RUU or even just the boot.img. I am not a super expert on this, so hopefully someone will chime in.

Unfortunately, might be. Odd that it was working fine, what would possess someone to try and flash the RUU? Anyway, if you tried flashing recovery, did you try and flash the system.img, boot.img and recovery_signed.img into their respective slots?
You should be able to find the files from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437436
You will just need to unzip and extract those files, then flash them in fastboot to their respective partitions.
Other then that, I would say your bricked unless, like what tylerlawhon said, you can see if you can send it to sonic to s-off again.
You could maybe also try reading through this if the previous didn't work, I know it says must be s-off and unlocked, but possibly worth a read

Whats the method for updating the Hboot without OTA?? never done it before.
Put the phone in the fastboot usb mode. Take the firmware.zip from the ota and put it in the fastboot folder on the pc.
Open the command window and relock the bootloader
Fastboot oem lock
Fastboot oem RebootRUU
Fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
Unlock the bootloader and install a clean new rom via a new custom recovery.
I recommend philz 5.15
