One of the reason I bought the ZL was the IR remote function, but unfortunately Sony didn't do a good job on it.
Only presets that came with the app worked, learning function didn't.
At first I thought that it was only my device that didn't work, but after searching a bit, I found out that
almost every ZL user faced this problem.
I gave up on the IR remote and went with a custom ROM.
Until yesterday I found this app that someone made for the Tablet Z.
It's called TSRemote, it only has the learning function for now.
The author seems busy and hasn't updated it for a while.
Hopefully someone can work on this project, it's opened source on GITHUB.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385277
The layout will be overlapped since it's meant for Tablet Z, you need to change the app DPI to 260-280 and it will look good.
Tested working with OMNI ROM 4.4
link is not working..
The stock IR app is functioning normally (including learning feature) under 4.3 10.4.B.0.569. If you are comfortable with the stock Sony firmware then you should consider updating to this firmware.
Really? Didn't know that...
Haven't gone back to stock ROM after flashing a custom one.
I'll try that soon.
Anyways, I think this is still good news for AOSP users.
Since IR remote is one of the function that haven't been implemented to the ROMS.
People might want to stay with AOSP rom and have an IR remote.
Well it's all about preferences.

Xperia ZL, 4.2.2 Stock (.67), rooted
I flashed back to stock rom and tested!
It does work as it should, and it was fixed already in the 4.2.2 - 10.3.1.A.2.67 version

You may flash the Generic stock firmware followed by this kernel and you have stock Sony experience with root and recovery.

So, you're saying that you can confirm that there are cases where Sony's Remote Control App's "Manual Setup" feature says it learns the IR command successfully, and then is also able to replicate that command to the device successfully?
And with the same device, it sometimes also states it learned the command successfully, while infact pressing the button doesn't seem to replace that command to the target device?

I was wondering because I know many people experience problems with the remote IR learning feature. In an attempt to get to the bottom of this, I was wondering if your case could be special.
However, in the meantime I received word that Xperia ZL units manufactured before week 18 of 2013 have a hardware production fault that prevents proper IR learning. I have yet to receive a working ZL (I sent it in for repair twice already).
For anyone in the same boat, check out the link in my sig.

Mirror link is a new tech that is yet to be fully supported for TV's as of yet according to Sony rep today (origin was Car Connectivity), only the very latest TV's most of which are not available enable this functionality, apparently it works with NFC and the Remote control.
In addition it is not until Jelly Bean 4.2 that miracast is natively supported.
Even though Sony say they support the function, as of 8th Jan, I am not 100% sure of these claims because most other WIFI parts they have implemented like throw just don't work completely
It seems even though the phone wasnt on 4.2.2 it still had miracast support as I have got a PTV3000 which worked perfectly fine with the Sony Z using the display mirroring. But I dont have the device anymore hence why I needed the apk for this function for another device.

I will have a look for you. Although it doesn't look good, because the application requires other protocols to function, so no support on your new device, I don't believe it is not going to work. But good luck.
From looking around there look like 4 apks minimum that would be required, even then I am sure it will rely on Sony OS framework somewhere else.
Anyway please find attached files contained within the zip

Actually MirrorLink has nothing to do with TVs nor will it ever. It is a technology that is going to be used in cars only.

I wanna reopen this thread 'cause I have some questions for those that are more experienced than me.
I have an Xperia ZL, and I use MirrorLink with my Sony XAV-712HD Double-DIN head unit. When I connect my phone to the head unit via usb (not MHL), Google Maps starts. This is the default behavior for the combination of my Xperia phone and this head unit, as depicted on this support page:
https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-info.pl?info_id=1145&mdl=XAV712HD
The footnote for my phone, and other Xperia Z product line phones, reads:
The Navi application will start when the MirrorLink connection begins. To use another applications, press the Home button. Application selection may not be available while driving.
My question is that I wonder if the default behavior (to start a Navigation app upon MirrorLink connection) resides in a file, either within the phone or within the head unit. If this behavior is in a file within the phone, I would love to be able to pull the file, edit it to point to another app, and then push the file back into my phone via ADB.
Does anyone know about MirrorLink, and what it requires to behave the way it does?
I wish someone could provide the Stock App Remote Control available for other ROMs like CM and AOKP.

It's possible, of course, but it would require development time that people are unwilling to spend for this, or else, a very passionate developer.
I was just looking into this at the Sony developer site. There is an API for the IR emitter. I will download and look at the examples. Maybe in a couple weeks. I am a c# guy so this is going to take some learning.

I've got a love-hate relation with my Xperia ZL, all due to the IR learning not working properly. If there were some third-party apps for controlling the IR, I would LOVE to have some of my unsupported devices working on my ZL.
Is the Quick Remote app on LG G3, which utilizes the IR blaster as a remote control, crippled? When I add a new remote, there are only three device types: TV, cable box and audio, as well as a universal remote. There are no DVD/Bluray! I'm sure I saw a screenshot of this app somewhere that has many more device types. Where can I get the full version?

I'm not sure but I have to say the "quick remote" in the notification area is prob my favorite feature with this phone and the only reason I'll be bummed to use a aosp ROM.

FWIW after suggesting the app to you, I did try it out. It seemed to work with my pair of blue tooth headphones during the limited time I used it..
Going by the comments about the app in the play store, it looks like the usage is limited based on the manufacturer of the blue tooth device....

I didn't have to activate it. For me it just worked. Your Bluetooth device still has to support sending its battery information to the phone. In this months Open Beta update there were some fixes for this feature. Maybe it works for you now?
Edit: grammar
Sony Mobile is committed to supporting the open developer community, and one way to show this is by publishing parts of our code as well as selected tools developed by our internal developers.
For some of the Xperia™ devices, we provide Android™ Open Source Project (AOSP) device configurations on GitHub. This means that the software will be open for you as a developer to use and contribute to. This is a way for us to support the open Android community, and it is also a tool for us to facilitate and verify contributions to AOSP.
If you want to build AOSP for your unlocked Xperia device, you find all the resources you need in the sections below.

Unified 4.4 kernel sources
https://github.com/sonyxperiadev/kernel
Project git

Now you can build the latest Android with the latest 4.4 kernel
Thanks for all the hard work and keeping the resources easily accessible and up-to-date. I will be using them for sure .
Thank you for providing these resources and keeping up development for the devices they support. I notice that the dynamic resolution switch in the extended settings doesn't work on android 8.0 or 8.1. Are there any plans to add support for this back in at any point?

It says here that we can change the display to native 4K at 60hz or 1080 at 120hz with your AOSP https://androplus.org/Entry/4577/
The previous comment says it's not working in 8.0 or 8.1, but I don't see an open issue about it in your bug tracker. Was it fixed?
If it wasn't available for 8.0 and 8.1, what version is it available on?

Is there a changelog or something like that? I had issues with these binaries and AOSP builds from last week. A few days later I noticed a commit that mentioned these new binaries, but after that the "Fingerprint" setting is gone, so I'm now using a build of 08-03-2018 with the V10 binaries.
To be honest, I haven't tried a factory reset nor flashing userdata.img, so when I get home I'll update the repo, build a new version and do a full reset.
@jerpelea why Sony remove the FM radio feature on all modern Xperia phones? Why??? The hardware capability is there. Why you cripple the phone on purpose?
Can you please give a logical explanation about this issue?
When will Sony give me back this feature?
And why Sony block the Displayport alt mode? Again you cripple the phone on purpose.
And why I cannot root my phone without losing DRM keys? How to backup my DRM keys??? Please tell me.
I am waiting for answers but my patience is slowly running out.
Thanks Sony for being so user friendly.
If Sony don't fix these issues soon I will never buy Sony products ever again and I sell my Xperia's, my Playstations, my Walkmans, my Sony TV's and all my other Sony products. And I tell all the people that I know to do the same.

No. Some manufacturers actually care about their users. Not all smartphone manufacturers cripple the phone on purpose the way Sony does it.
