So I currently own a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 which has been on contract since November 2011. I've been eligible for an upgrade for about 6 months now and today my Note 3 arrived in the mail. I ordered it from eBay unlocked rather than through T-Mobile due to price, but it still retains the T-Mobile LTE bands. Now my question is sort of complicated since it pertains to my situation. My mother who's not currently on a plan is planning to sign up for T-Mobile and wants to use my phone for her contract (the Galaxy SII). My sister is currently in charge of my plan and since this is the first unlocked phone that I've purchased I don't exactly know how the process works. The Note 3 came with a T-Mobile micro sim card that hasn't been activated yet, but my Galaxy S II uses the older large sim card. As of writing this post I haven't turned the Note 3 on yet due to charging. My question(s) is, can I activate the new sim card from home and continue to keep my phone number from the SII (before my mom signs up for the plan) or do I have to sign up for a new contract under T-Mobile to be able to use the Note 3 with the same phone number? Also in the mean time can I use the unlocked phone without a sim card? Help would be greatly appreciated.
yea bro just called tmobile to tranfer your number to a new simcard

...it appears that both Rogers and Bell in Canada are offering a SGH-I747 Samsung GS3 which is listed as the same variant as AT&T. However, they are offering internal 32GB models and AT&T is not, and that's what I want. I'm current using an iPhone 4S 64GB and I want to be able to swap sim cards back and forth between phones. Yes, I know I can get a 64GB microSD card but I want 96Gb on the phone (I don't want to argue this point).
So I have a few questions:
1) If I get a Rogers or Bell phone without contract and manage to unlock it, will it be fully compatable with the AT&T network just by swapping sims cards with the iPhone?
2) Will it work with AT&T LTE as well as 3G / Edge, both cell and data?
3) Does unlocking companies like cellunlocker.net actually WORK? Is this legal?
Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide.
Tony
The Bell. Rogers, Telus have the same hardware as the AT&t phone other than the sofware, rom and modem is a little different. I have used AT&T phone here in Canada without issues. The only problem, right now for at least the first month, they will not sell you a phone outright, either new contract or as a upgraded only.

Also it is legal to unlock your phone and you can get the sim unlock codes from companies like cellular unlock.

Hola
I will step in here and say you are presently incorrect about not being able to buy this phone outright. I bought it at a local Bell Canada store (32gb) and no regrets yet.
That being said Bell is the only carrier that is allowing this at the moment. But do note buying the phone outright online is not possible which is an obvious limitation if you can't visit a local store.

Bought mine straight out at a Rogers Store in Ottawa. Walked in bought it and popped my sim in when I got to my car.

I have same problem.
I'll take the opportunity to note that Telus also sells the phone outright; you may have to get it directly from them, though.
You can just go buy the phone out right wherever you want I walked into futureshop bought a Rogers s3 then took it to my buddy who works at a cell repair shop and he unlocked it for me. Money is money whoever says it can't be done is flat out lying

I upgraded from iPhone to SGS3. Now I'm upgrading my wife to my SGS3 and taking the Note 2 which I ordered as her upgrade.
I'm assuming all I need to do to activate the Note 2 for yours truly is swap in my SIM. However, since my wife is moving from iPhone to my SGS3, I'm guessing that the SIM being shipped with the Note 2 will need to be inserted in the SGS3 and activated for her number... but... the AT&T site claims that the enclosed SIM is titled "Replacement Micro-SIM for Apple iPad." Someone please tell me AT&T isn't shipping a Micro-SIM for an iPhone whose use we are discontinuing.

Just call in and tell them that you're using the note and she is going to be using the sgs3. They have to change the data plan to a Lte data plan. Its easy and free. Its call a device swap.

Well, I purchased the Note 2 as an upgrade on her plan and upgraded her data to LTE in the midst of the contract agreement. I mean, I guess I'll just wait until I open the package to find out if the SIM card they are supplying is the correct SIM for the Samsung device or if it is, in fact, the Micro SIM titled on the order.

Wondering if anyone here has any experience or recommendations. I moved to an area where T-Mobile service is terrible. I'm considering doing the straight talk bring your phone option and getting the AT&T compatible sim since my phone is unlocked. I'm not sure how this would work as far as what radio i'd need to flash and whether other people have had good experiences with straight talk especially using a "tmobile" device with the at&t sim/service.

So Im taking it Straight Talk runs off at&t towers? I always thought it was verizon guess ill be looking into it more because I have the same exact issue.. I need to find a way to sim unlock my phone for free and if not free then something pretty cheap because I refuse to pay 25$ to websites i question are reliable or not. If you find anything post it and ill do the same for you. Also Straight talk sells sim cards for their service for 10$ if you didnt already know.
With straight talk bring your phone it operates off tmobile and or at&t towers and is gsm. Verizon is cdma and from what i've seen on the straight talk website they don't do cdma. Regarding an unlock call the carrier and as long as you up to date on your bill and have had service for a few months they should provide you with an unlock code for free. There is also a thread around here for a free T989 unlock it's a pretty easy process from what I recall.

Thanks for the info, The reason I didnt try getting A unlock code from tmobile before was because i herd you have to have your phone paid off before they would give you one because you could easily just switch service and keep the phone. Is that true? Because im still paying off my phone they add 20$ to my bill each month because the credit of the account holder wasnt good enough. Im gonna try looking for the thread you mentioned though.
EDIT: Also after i unlocked my phone could I use the same sim ive been using until i buy my new one? Or should i just wait to unlock when i get the new sim card? Sorry for all the questions i just wanna be cautious about this so i dont end up bricking my phone.

If you unlock you can still use your sim. I am getting a rom put on T-989 right now with a Straight Talk Sim card. I unlocked mine back in April but then got the Note. I was on Tmobile but data was horrible outside the big cities. Have been on the AT&T ST sim since last April on my Note and love it. Just wanted to try the GS2 out again and looking for a decent rom. Having trouble with slim bean and CM.

Also tell T-mobile you are going to travel overseas in Europe and you want to use some prepaid plans there. They should unlock then even if still under contract.

Both, the phones they used to sell would have either a "C" or "G" at the end of the model# indicating whether it was CDMA or GSM compatible. Not sure about some of their newer phones though, since I think they also have HSPA phones now.
I would imagine the network they assign you to when you bring your own phone would depend on your current network since I think they still operate on both towers.

When you buy the sim you can select either Tmobile or AT&T. AT&T has better coverage in my area. You can't buy the sim at Wally World. Only online.

Hey guys I just got the note 4 after having the note 2 for a while so I have a few questions.
I bought my phone from swappa and just popped my CRICKET SIM in with no problems after putting in APN. My only problems are that I cannot set-up call guarding because it says there is a network/SIM error. Any ideas?
The second is that mobile hotspot says there is a temporary error when starting up. Is this because it cannot technically register on AT&T network to work? Ore week I have to use a stock rooted ROM with hotspot for SM-910A (or other compatible ROMS)
What do you guys think, should I just call AT&T (figuring you guys would know more since those people usually don't know what a ROM even is)
As far as I know the phone is network locked but when I try to put unlock request in through AT&T they cannot find my IMEI. Phone is clean ESN since SWAPPA does check before any sale is made.
I also tried both APN settings that have aiowireless or cricket wireless in fields.
call fowarding working good for me just a reminder Cricket Wireless does not provide hotspot.
Cricket has nothing to do with hotspot if its already available. Technically if ATT unlocks phone it should work. Like I did with my note 2.
Are you in the same scenario as me, cricket behind your provider and att model?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A
I understand what are you saying. If you unlock your ATT Phone hotspot not going to work because hotspot only work if you have a ATT rooted phone or a ATT Custom ROM but in this phone its going to be different between note 2 and note 4. note 2 have the bootloader unlocked while ATT note 4 have the bootloader locked thats why its going to be more hard to obtain hotspot in note 4 on Cricket Wireless.
UPDATE: I called ATT and they said if I get the phone unlocked I can do va factory reset and then I will get hotspot unlocked. Apparently my imei is fine and they can check it but the website doesn't work.

I have cricket wireless and have an ATT Note 4 with Hot spot Working. Cricket only allows for certaint devices to use hotspot. And they are all phones that come from Cricket. The only phone they allow that is BYOD (bring your own device - from another carrier [att]) is the iPhones. What I did to get this working was I knew a friend that had the Cricket LG Stylus which is hotspot Compatible. We went to cricket and swapped out IMEIs in the system saying we we're switching phones and wanted it in the system not to just swap simcards in the phones.. When they did this I asked them to enable hotspot on my account and they we're able to enable it. Before they did not have the option because the box was grey out and showed i had a BYOD device. When we left we swapped Simscards back into our phones. Its been working for Two Months no Issues. I use hotspot for my Tablet all the time. Why Cricket does not allow BYOD to use the hotspot feature I will never know. Probably a ploy to get people to purchase their devices but it's Bull**** considering that it works just fine.
NOTE: Upgrade your data or anything you want to to do to your account before you do this as the system will pick up your BYOD phone in the system after a certaint time, hotspot will Continue to work unless their are changes on the account. If you make a change it will disable hotspotwe (showing you have a BYOD) and you will need to go to cricket again with a friend or your cricket phone that is hotspot Compatible and tell them to swap IMEIs and re-enable hot spot. Again. (I had to do this.)

Once you've done this you can also swap the sim into another device and hotspot will still work fine. I move my sim between my Att Note4 and my Att Blackberry Classic every other day.

Your phone number is embedded into your simcard.
We went to the store and the representative put the IMEI of my friends Cricket LG Stylo on my Account (connected to my phone #). And Vise Versa. (My AttNote 4 IMEI on her account connected to her phone number). They swapped the Sims when they did the IMEI change because we told them we we're changing phones. but when we left we just immediately swapped phones back when we got to her car.
---------- Post added at 03:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:49 PM ----------
You do not have to switch sims but the reps will want to because they will want to be sure each phone is working with the accounts they put them on when they get done..
Understood I misunderstood you. I don't know anyone that has cricket but I'm wondering if I can buy a cheap one from list for like$30-50 online. And then ask for swap and do what you did.

So how'd it go
Hi i got a N976U phone that i would like to use with Xfinity mobile, its failing with IMEI check. i spoke with Xfinity csr to add the imei to my existing line , but he would not add since imei check is failing.
I bought a unlock code from ebay and thought will use it.
When i insert the xfinity SIM it did not prompt for unlock code, i believe this phone is unlocked. It does not have any carrier apps.
I tried with a unused Verizon sim and it did not prompt for unlock code.
Can i flash to any firmware that will make it work with xfinity. Any help is appreciated.
Service Provider SW Ver - XAA/XAA/ATT
security patch level is feb 20.
Baseband version - N976USQSTATA4
TIA !!
Flashing firmware for another carrier won't fix your problem. Xfinity Mobile is not accepting any 5G phones from other carriers on their network now. Not even if they're carrier unlocked, and not even factory unlocked 5G devices. Best thing is to contact the seller (and swappa) explain the situation and return the device for a refund.

Currently I have a note 8(unlocked) with the Xfinity account and wanted to replace it with Note 10 + 5G. I'm not adding a new line.
I put the Note 8 xfinity SIM in Note 10 + and got a message "Not registered with Network" and was not able to make calls.
After I swapped the SIM and put it back into Note 8 , LTE stopped working and had to reset network settings (That's a different story).
But still not able to use Note 10 + 5g with Xfinity. I saw in forums here many people just swap SIM in Note 10 + and it started to work for them, but im not able to do this
When I spoke with CSR she mentioned that I need to add a new line with Note 10 + and activate it and then transfer Note 10 + to my current number and then delete the new account.
I got a SIM card from Xfinity store and called , but CSR checked imei and he did not want to add the imei and create a new line.

That's good information about your SIM swapping experience with a 5G device. It confirms that even if we have an XM account and current device we can't BYOD another 5G device to XM for now. You shouldn't have any trouble returning it under the circumstances, with Swappa's help.
It might be the sim version, I have had some issues in the past fue to this, notably when swapping the sim from an olf device to the new and when the transition between 2g- 3g, 3g-4g, and the last one, 4g to lte+ when my carrier implemented VOLTE calls, , I received a notification to get the newest sim version to be able to use volte, at no cost for me, in your case, it may be something of the sort, just my 2 cents
I checked the imei in Verizon imei checker and i get not supported, are there GSM and CDMA versions of Note 10 plus ? I thought they support both versions

US snapdragon versions support both GSM and CDMA networks. This is all about XM and not allowing BYOD 5G on their network, currently.

@TheMadScientist,
FWIW, I just took delivery of a Samsung factory unlocked (U1 device) Note 20 Ultra 5G, and had no problems with my SIM swap (from my unlocked Note 10+). A lot of others (on the Xfinity Mobile forum) have reported difficulty with this. No problems for me. But I don't have the 5G SIM card and don't pay the extra $3/month/gig for 5G access (since it's non-existent here).
