Hey guys,
i have a question. Shortly after i got S3 rooted after the 4.3 OTA Update i dropped and cracked the screen on my phone. Has anyone had any luck taking the phone in rooted for hardware replacement?
Or should i unroot prior to going in. The root process i took installed the TWRP recovery. I then removed the knox app as well. i'm not sure if there is a way to reset the KNOX bootloader back to the original state or not so it doesn't have custom set.
Thanks!
There used to be an internal sprint memo floating around this forum, or the Epic4G forum (I think it was the latter) that said that Sprint employees are to recommend against rooting the device but are to treat any device as if it's unrooted.
Of course, that was an old memo and sprint may have changed that policy. But they seem to be less strict on rooted phones, IME.

Worse comes to worse, if they do say something about your rooted device , not that day wait 2 or 3 days just to make sure its not obvious , and if you have insurance , call and say you lost it, granted you'll have to pay the deductible , but hey its a new phone and not stuck with a broken one

Hello,
This device will be launching on Oct 28.
I need to know if something needs to be extracted for dev use before we root our phones. I plan on rooting this as soon as i get it, so if the devs need anything, it would be a good idea to tell me what and how to extract it. Im new to the rooting/hacking idea but im a computer technician so a simple explaination will be enough.
Cheers!
My only hope is that it isn't too much different from the 989, I also hope that there aren't as many issues with the screen as the T-Mobile version :/
actually, i was hoping to capture an original image before we even root the phone
just in case we need to flash back for warranty purposes
your best bet is to contact bubby323 that have already created one for the Tmo USA version

Once I get my custom kernels done for the T-Mobile version tonight, I will compile you a root and recovery method, and pass along the instructions on how to make a backup before hands.

Hey AllGamer,
Is it at all possible to get separate forums for this? I think it's going to be fairly crowded and add to the confusion.

i seriously doubt the Admins will open a new forum for that, when it's the same phone
we just need some instruction to make an OEM ROM Dump and be able to flash it back, in case of warranty.

Not a whole new forum, but a subforum, kind of like with the Original International Galaxy S II.

You think the phones will differ that much? Is this going to stop us from getting custom roms installed?
So this puppy is coming out tomorrow 10am!
I need to know how to back up the stock ROM in case something goes wrong while rooting!
I'm going to go to the mall at 10am to get the phone! Woooo!

i confirmed availability on the Best Buy stores around my area
i'll be picking one up at lunch time or after work
Does the telus version have the vertical line and blotting issue?
I'm pretty sure it's the same manufacturing line for the t-mobile version. Just a different carrier lock and ROM added in the end.
Up until the software, I don't see why they would manufacture it differently.
So i do suspect that it has the same issues as the t-mobile. Perhaps a smaller percentage since there isn't as many in canada and hopefully the QC got better for the second batch.
I do doubt it's as wide-spread as it appears on the forums. They've probably made millions of these phones that are perfectly fine.
bought my phone in downtown Montreal this morning,
screen is fine.
dont know what date is was manufactured, i cant seem to find the information...
i'll take some snapshot of the screen in a dark room when i get home

While the ideal test would be to put it against a Sprint unit that are known to have good screens, it may still be useful to put it next to a T-Mobile phone and take pictures while running the test described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320942
This would at least show us any differences between T-Mobile and Telus displays.
2 questions:
Are these telus branded? i.e. is Telus logo on the face of the phone like the T-Mobile version or does it just say samsung.
Can one root and unlock it to use on rogers or must one buy unlock code from online site?
Could you test the screen and see if it has issues as our tmous screen?

My phone's USB port is borked...as in not working....I'm running BluKuban with CWM installed. Are there any update.zip files that will get me back to full stock so I can take the phone into the sprint store? I can't use Odin as nothing I plug into the USB port works. But I can use WiFi and Airdroid to get a file over to the phone if I can keep it connected long enough. (I'm using a third party charger with some spare batteries to keep running for now.)
Any help is appreciated.
There is a tutorial somewhere I had to do this as well, mobile odin (paid) and the one click .tar will install. You can start a dropbox and upload your file to there then export to you SD or use Kies...Just an idea, but it works I had to go stock before taking my phone to Sprint for a swap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vmEmheJnyg&feature=relmfu
Get the .tar's and use mobile odin
BTW wrong forum!
Flash the stock modem of the rom you'll install using cwm then flash the stock .tar with mobile odin. That should do the trick.
Can also flash a stock rom from cwm iirc, dont think there's a stock unrooted zip rom around tho.
Tappin' Typin'
Mobiletechvideos.com can replace the port with a Samsung exact replacement. If it were me and I could afford it, I'd have them replace the power button switch. Yours may work but if it fails in the future, it would save you from sending it in. If sprint tries to make you pay the 100 deductable for a refurb, it's cheaper to go and have that website replace it. Granted you'll be without a phone, hopefully you have a backup of some sort, for a week or so while they're repairing it. It might be easier to get a refurb, but if you get the port and switch replaced on your phone, at least you won't potentially be getting a refurb that isn't 100% fixed from whatever its original problem was.
---------- Post added at 12:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:52 AM ----------
Oh, and be more careful when your phone is plugged in after you get it fixed.
Samsung repair is always an option. You would not have to pay like you would with mobiletechvideos.
If you have an old Sprint phone to use for a week or two I suggest that route. You do have a 1 year warranty.

My local sprint store just did a swap for free (I take it your usb port is non functional), any hardware issues that degrade the use of the phone is covered under manufactures warranty and you should not have to pay for this through Asurion (w.e. it is called). Also I had my phone since launch with an available upgrade, they kept trying to coax me into upgrading and I told them the phones were identical in features (S3 and S2) the lady about had a heart attack trying to explain the differences, I insisted that "it is my upgrade to use at my disposal" and "this phone has all of my needs covered at the moment" after confirming that the USB port failing was a "Known issue", she gladly gave me a new device.
Kind of a pointless post, but so was this entire thread as this has been covered before....every aspect of it the OP, my post, and in regards to it being in the wrong spot...Anyway good luck..
Forgot what I was gonna say that made any sense at all..
Wow question got answered with no flaming. :good:
Very proud to see this. Got a report on it and no flaming.
OP, please post questions in the Q&A section. Development section is strictly for developing purposes.
I am having a really bad problem in my Galaxy S4, and have been trying to fix it for a full day.
Basically, many of the default android apps fail to work. By fail, I mean the screen becomes fuzzy, or completely dissorited, and just crashes. The phone also randomly restarts when I use it.
Overall, I really can't use the phone. I have attached screenshots of some of the issues I am facing on the phone.
I have tried reinstalling Android version 4.2.2, but the same problem occurs.
Any help on this matter would be MASSIVELY appreciated!
More pictures of the problem.
Looks like you might have gotten a bad unit. At this point, I think you should just go ahead and exchange the device rather than trying to waste time trying to figure out what's wrong. If you buy it from T-Mobile, you should get free overnight shipping. If the one you got was from T-Mo, just return it to that 4500 address and they'll refund you fully.

Hi,
I just wasted an hour with a samsung chat support trying to make my old S2 to work with sidesync 3.0.
After an hour chatting with a very inept rep closed he chat and began looking somewhere else.
I basically want to be able to control my phone from the computer as demonstrated by SideSync by Samsung. Yet, it looks like I fell on a crack. Version 3.0 claims to be compatible with the S2, but also says is compatible with KITKAT and higher. The latest stock rom from T-Mobile is 4.1.2.
Older versions of SideSync only worked with Samsung PCs apparently so I am stuck in between.
I wondered if anyone one succeeded making this combo work. (SGH-T989 with android 4.1.2 and Windows 7x64 Pro woth SideSync 3.0)
I guess my other choice is to install a custom ROM on my S2. Yet the many time I tried to ROOT it I failed and gave up. (Done it before with other phones and tablets) and that would be a subject for another thread.
Anyway, any input will be appreciated.
Thanks!
I think them listing the S2 was an error, it cleary lists 4.4 as a minimum requirement.
And if it relies on the touchwiz firmware, which is likely, it won't work on non touchwiz roms. (Aka anything above 4.1.2 on the t989.)
You're likely out of luck.
---------- Post added at 04:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:50 PM ----------
Ah, some later made S2 models got official 4.4. Mystery solved.

Hi - I moved your question thread to the Q&A section where you should have posted it originally - please post in the correct sections - thank you.
I tried a new kernel and using Odin all seemed to have gone well, phone booted up without a problem. After I wen to unlock it this message appears (see picture attached) and I'm unable to connect to the network via data. I have tried everything I can think of, flashing old kernel back odined back to stock firmware and the damn thing won't go away. Even went by TMobile in the off chance they can unlock it but the the rep talking with technical help was able to see the software had been modified in some way and directed me to call Samsung technical help.
Anyone come across this problem that can make a suggestion on how to correct it? BTW on wifi everything works including calls (wifi calling) data, etc.

yup tried that also
The only way to correct/avoid this would be to not enable security protocol in settings and then make your system "custom" by using odin.
This is the Samsung "gotcha" for messing with phone in a way that borks it.

Yeah they got me alright, I have never faced a problem like this one and have been able to recover from most anything I've tried, either by myself or with a little help from members here with Odin or adb. So I already wiped the phone completely and odined back to complete stock 5.1.1, obviously that did not work so there is no way to restore the efs IEMI data?
Which of the security protocols and by custom using odin, do you mean flashing a rom with the protocols adjusted?

He Steve, just thought I would follow up with you on this. Final verdict is to date as far as I could find there is no fixing the situation I was in. When that msg pops up, the phone is toast and there is nothing you can do except replace the phone. I spoke with T-Mobile upper technical management and they explained what happened is the security software in the device has detected root and disabled the IEMI from receiving or transmitting any data. Once that happens the warranty is voided and even a customer who's been with them for the last for the last 15 years can't get a break. They have a strict policy on rooted or software altered phones and will not want anything to do with them (the warranty warning is clear) can confirm that a phone has been tampered with even without having the physical phone in hand. So bottom line is something goes wrong with root or afterwards forget about any support or warranty exchange with T-Mobile. they will check security software and will know if you have tripped Knox.
The new "brick".
Sorry about your situation but it goes to show how Samsung is treating this phone, like a dang eyephone.

This might seem like a question out of left field, but the phone that you modified that T-Mobile blocked, was it bought / leased directly from T-Mobile, or was it done through a 3rd party like a Rent-A-Center or something like that?

I've been thinking about this and it just doesn't make sense. If it is your phone, it's yours. They don't care what you do with it. But if you screw it up and you're rooted it gives them the opportunity to deny warranty. Which 9 times out of 10 they still honor warranty because they are clueless. There is more to this story.
Much more, and I really wanna know exactly why this happened..
