[Q] EEEK, Now KNOX freaking me out! Really confused. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi everyone!
I am a noob to XDA, however I have successfully rooted and flashed both my cricket Mercury M880, and now, much to my astonishment, my cricket galaxy s4 SCH-R970C, equipped with this KNOX monster I have just now read so much about. Out of pure ignorance, I rooted the SCH-R970C running Android 4.2.2, and proceeded to delete Bloatware. I had a vague notion of what KNOX was supposed to do, so I happily deleted that booger too. After all that, I backed up everything, then went about flashing CM 10.1. Everything works PERFECTLY. So what the heck is my problem, you may be asking, well this is it.
My mom's Sprint Galaxy s3, SPH-L710, was flashed over to Cricket. When they did this, the nice man at the Cricket store, explained that there were issues with flashed phones sending pic texts from stock messenger, so he installed another messenger from the market, and warned us not to accept any firmware updates. Then my mom, being a mom, accepted the Android 4.3 update OTA. So of course, just as we were warned, the MMS stopped working.
My initial idea for a fix was to simply root the phone, install CM 10.1, and voila! Android 4.1.2 downgraded. MMS or pic texting restored!
But first, I thought, I should check in here, and see what some threads had to say. My findings scared the crap outta me.
There were some very succinct posts relating to downgrade from an OTA 4.3 update to any other version, with respect to KNOX being there specifically to indicate if you had monkeyed with your phone. Some went on to suggest that any attempt to downgrade would hard brick your phone.
But I did. WITH factory installed KNOX. Herein lies my confusion.
1) Simplest things first. Is there another messenger app in the market anyone knows about that supports Android 4.3 and will send picture texts from my mom's Sprint SPH-L710 phone now flashed to Cricket? I saw "chomp" but SMS is in it's name and I believe MMS is the problem.
2) Failing that, If I back up, root, and just wipe everything, can't I flash CM 10.1 to mom's s3 with the same process I used on my now perfectly functioning and CM 10.1 running s4?
3) If step 2 is a viable option, should I use CM 10.1 .zip for cricket model SCH-R530, or the CM 10.1.zip for Sprint model SPH-L710. (bearing in mind it was originally a sprint phone flashed to cricket.)
4) W (exactly) TF is this KNOX deal? Like I say, I deleted this lil devil from MY s4 running 4.2.2, and proceeded to merrily jack with my phone in complete ignorance, with absolutely no consequence. ( other than voiding my warranty ). From reading most of the threads here, I should be holding a cold, lifeless droid in my hands yet, IT LIVES!
If I violated any of XDA's TOS with this post, PLEASE DON'T BAN ME. This site has been the most helpful I've come across. Just let me know my post was unacceptable. I do promise I have read a TON of previous threads, but none seemed to address my specific issues.
Secondly, if you made it this far, thank you so much for your consideration. Any advice you can provide would be gratefully appreciated.

Chomp works well for ams and mas give me a minute and I'll post screen shots of how to set it up

TouchWiz vulnerability?

i guess by now every SGS3 owner on att has heard about the touchwiz exploit.
I did the test you can find here :http://www.androidcentral.com/ussd-test
and my SGS3 stock rooted, build number IMM76D. I747UCALH9 dialer showed up blank.
central android forums says my phone is not vulnerable.
what about yours?
Stock rooted H9, also came up blank.
Using BlackCream ROM, and it came up with my IMEI. Is there anyway to patch this exploit, without re-installing a ROM?

Yea.... people should read Gizmodo a little more often, too.

Samsung has been aware of it for a few months, and the latest firmware fixed it. So any ROM at least based off of that wouldn't have the vulnerability either.

Am I safe?

I have an S3 that's flashed to MetroPCS.
Will flashing custom roms remove my carrier settings?
I'm just curious how "am I safe" related to your question haha. But flashing a custom rom made for sprint phones and service is very risky and not a good idea.

In short, stay away if you want to stay alive

neither of the above users are correct.
It doesn't matter what carrier it is made for, you can use it with MetroPCS. you might want to remove the Sprint specific apks from /system/app, but other than that, it will continue to work with MetroPCS.
I am running Jelly Bomb 7.0 and my wife is running Freeza's LJ7 leak. we both have 3g speeds, internet, mms in/out, voicemail notifications, etc.
If you are missing any of the above, check out my guide on how to get it done on the S3.

Thanks for the informative reply. What about the Sprint JellyBean update?
Sent from my SprintroPCS Samsung GS3.
You said custom roms. If you get the Sprint OTA you will lose root.
Understand that the settings that make your phone connect to MetroPCS,
Send and receive text messages and get 3g access can not be affected or overwritten by flashing any kind of rom or by receiving an ota.
However, mms requires modification to the APN, which requires root access.

BUUUUT I can root Jellybean once I get it.
The reason I asked is because I had an Evo 3D before this, and for some reason, when I would flash an AOSP ROM, my phone would lose its carrier settings and go back to Sprint. I think the phone had a modified or repaired ESN.
I can not believe how mean you guys are. Would you feel good if your Cat got killed just because of a careless ROM flash?

well, I guess I spoke too quickly. I have only ever used phones with clean ESN. I don't know how "repaired" or "modified" ESNs work.

Nevermind I took a shot at it and I am happily on CM10 right now. Also, I did the update through ODIN and that worked.
Also on a side note to the rest of you, Don't give me smart ass replies to a simple question. I don't need that. Thanks.

Darthstalker ROM -- All things not development related--

I figured I would start this thread so that we can move all the non-development talk out of the development section. I hope people will use it so that when something that pertains to development is talked about it will be easier to find. We can discuss what kernels gives best battery life, which ones work and which one break things. We can post about our favorite apps, widgets, wallpapers, or how the weather is outside. Maybe someone will get help on an issue they are having. We can discuss anything within the guidelines of XDA, lets just try to help keep Jovy's thread clean.
I'll start, has anyone had an issue when coming out of sleep the screen is dim and you have to go into brightness and tap it to make it work? I think maybe I set my clock frequency to low or maybe I should be using a different governor. Another issue that bugs me is when I have ripple effect set and use a black background for my lockscreen the borders of the screen look slightly grey. I have read posts about this and by turning off ripple effect the color is like it should be. I like the ripple effect and I like black backgrounds, does anyone know about a fix for this, or does anyone notice this issue on their phone.
Here's the link to the Darthstalker ROM if you read this post and want to check out the actual ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014442
I am not the developer of this ROM, all credit for this great ROM goes to jovy23 and those he's listed in his OP.

Same here! I find 99.9% of ROM-related issues for us flashaholics stem from not performing a full wipe prior to a flash. I've been fully stable on every DaRTHSTALKER update, with LOTS of varying kernel testing, by using this method. Full data + cache + Dalvik wipe then flash than another cache/dalvik wipe before the boot is always a good strategy!

Much better. I guess I didn't even try the Rom tweaks on this one in the first place. Gonna see tomorrow how much better it will be. On another note, has anyone successfully connected to allshare play with another gs3? My girlfriend got hers (completely stock 4.1.1 w/no root) and everything else interacts except for that. Would like to group cast with her and I've followed the videos online to do it but our phones don't show up in each other's network, connected to WiFi of course.

Thank you for this thread, this is an excellent idea!
I've been a fan of this ROM since the very day the version 9 was uploaded. I got my SGS3 late December (this is my first android device), tried a few ROMs and stopped on this one. (BTW: a suggestion to put a link to the DARTHSTALKER S3 ROM thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014442 on OP so everyone new to this knows what it is all about).
This being my first post on the entire forum I was not allowed to ask questions on the original ROM's threads (and there are at least two I am following).
Now, if you don't mind a newbie question, here it is:
I am a T-mo subscriber using an unlocked AT&T phone. Currently I am on DARTHSTALKER v9 port for AT&T (here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087164 ). As the most of you I am eagerly awaiting version X1 of the DaRTHSTALKER, but my question is: can I just flash the T-mobile version or should I wait for when an AT&T PORT is available?
Thnks.

I would pm Jovy as he would know best, but maybe someone may be able to answer the question for you. I am new to phones also and the S3 is my first smart phone. I too have tried most of the roms, but keep coming back to this one. I do know that most at&t kernels are compatible, I would want to be 100% sure of ROM compatibility before flashing, might end up in a bad way. Thanks for the suggestion about seeing if Jovy would put the link in his OP.

I had something happen last night that I've never had happen before and maybe sometime can tell me what it was. I was restoring back after messing with a few mods that didn't work and when my phone booted up in the lower left corner it said "Safe Mode". I went back into recovery and wiped cache and dalvik cache, fixed permissions, and then rebooted and safe mode was gone. What is safe mode?
Thanks,
Todd
Edit: Should have used Google first. Safe mode is similar to computer safe mode. It only loads base os to allow for removal of files. Still don't understand why it happened, but atleast I know it wasn't something bad.

I WOULD NOT DO THAT! Although I cannot answer the question directly, every carrier has modified there own Galaxy S3. They are all completely different. I know that if you flash a Universal galaxy S3 rom onto a T-Mobile device, it will completely hard brick it due to a change in the partition structure. If you have an At&t device, I would still stick to the Galaxy s3 at&t roms even though T-mobile is your carrier.

+1. Unlocking your phone only allows it access to a different carriers sim card. It does not change the base of the phone itself. I have a Tmobile SG3 that's unlocked for my travels but any ROM I flash must be a tmo based ROM. In your case stick with the ATT ROMs so you don't end up with a brick, and enjoy this great rom
My s3 is stalking your s3....
Does anyone have a flashable (zip) stock kernel?

I'm unsure overall. And don't worry there's no chance it will already be mb1 lol. If new out of box, it will at a minimum be at LJ7. Ma6 and mb1 have been released in the last week. The phones in box left the factory months ago and haven't been updated since maybe in a few months the new in box phones will have the mb1 update so just get ready as if your LJ7 or a previous version.

I really do not know. I went to MA6 from whatever was previous on my phone(4.1.1). then I rooted then next morning OTA MB1 and rerooted all in less than 48 hours. So i have really no way of knowing what changes were in between MA6 and MB1. There were some minor changes I noticed after updating to MA6.
Google Settings appeared in the App drawer. I think there were some keyboard modifications where there is a separate heptic feedback switch to turn on or off.
Other than that I think everything else was behind the scenes type stuff and bug fixes.

It's just that on the Note 2, some baseband versions wouldn't play nice with certain roms (cause errors, etc.). I'm seeing some roms in dev section saying, "based on ma5" or "based on ljc." Does that mean I HAVE to be on that baseband to flash that rom? Sorry for all the noobish questions but when you bounce around devices, you get confused

Samsung devices act the same. I suggest you read a whole lot more since your question reveals that you really have no idea what you are doing and a brick is in the future... Samsung devices act the same. I suggest you read a whole lot more since your question reveals that you really have no idea what you are doing and a brick is in the future... A brick is NOT in my future. Look I respect the fact that you've been around a while and have helped many out but just because I ask a noobish question doesn't mean I'm a noob. I've owned an OG Evo, a EVO 3d, the EVO 4g LTE, the galaxy nexus, the sg2, the gnote 2, and sg3 and many more I probably can't remember right now. I have been a "flashoholic" for quite a while, flashing roms, radios, mods, etc. I've even helped devs build flashable zips to install mods. I HAVE NEVER BRICKED A DEVICE. Maybe my question wasn't clear but it doesn't matter cuz I already updated my baseband to mb 1 and I've flashed several roms, all without incident. It seems to me that all roms work regardless of what baseband your on (as long as they are for the right device). I respect you and others on this forum and I just didn't appreciate the tone with which this came across.

[ROM][STOCK][CWM][ROOTED][DEODEXED]Galaxy S III(SPH-L710)(Boost) MD7

This is a stock MD7 for the Boost Variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III, with SuperSU andBusybox installed. Apks are also zipaligned. This will not install a modem and should not wipe your device. This was built from the Samsung Official MD7 build.
Thanks to Smith058 for the find, and for letting me use it to cook with.Link to his OPhttp://androidforums.com/boost-mobile-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/753772-odin-backup-sph-l710_md7-stock.html
Thanks also to Google and XDA, for obvious reasons
Kennyglass123 - For posting guidance and all the awesome moderating he does around town
Stryke_the_Orc - For believing in me, for being a great friend and mentor, and always pushing me to do more
Garwynn - For teaching me something new almost daily, and for helping me bring more Boost support to this phone

Flashing Instructions:
This will NOT flash a modem. If you are coming from stock MD7, you will keep MD7. Same goes for whatever baseband you have right now!
1. Download zip to your sdcard
2. Reboot into CWM, TWRP, or other compatible recovery(I used CWM 6.0.3.1 Touch)
3. Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik
4. Flash zip
5. Reboot
6. Profit
Issues:
I do not claim to be the expert on anything, especially development issues. If you notice issues, please let me know. And if you have a solution to one of the issues I've found, please, by all means, post it and you'll get the credit. Enjoy
Note: It seems when rebuilding this to fix the issues above, I've lost the "rising orange Bs" boot animation. There's still boot-up sound, and the blue Samsung animation, but no Boost-specific. If you want it, you can get it from the previous build If I get time, I'll add it back in manually, but frankly, I like not having it there, it seems to boot a little faster

A little confused.
Is this for Boost or Sprint? Will Sprint users see Boost logos and such? Or is this for people who are trying to use a Boost phone on Sprint service or vice versa?

It's for the Boost Mobile Galaxy s3. Boost has their own variant of the s3 like other carriers now.

Notorious is correct. It's for the Boost variant of the S3. And to answer your second question, yes, it will flash Boost logo, mmsc url, etc.

Glad I asked.
I'd guess that it wouldn't work well on my Sprint phone.

Actually, it'll work just fine. It'll just have Boost signature and mmsc url. Just like Boost and VM users have to change mmsc url, you would have to as well, I think. I say that, because if you check mmsc urlv on this rom, it actually reads "not set." I would be interested to see if mms would send and receive on other carriers with it saying "not set."

Quick ? JD, does my Sprint S3 will have to be on the same MD7(since it was base on that one) or can it be on a different one...i.e newer/older version.

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you're referring to your modem, then no, it doesn't have to be MD7. This is a Boost build, so you may have to change your mmsc url to get mms

So I will not lose any apps or anything if of course I don't do a total wipe I mean?
I did a nandroid just encase but wondered if it would just do the "android is updating" after installing thus all apps would be untouched.
I flashed it once I had some time it kept nagging about wanting to upgrade and was very laggy and slow compared to blazer I was running not ready to be a daily for me at least not till I have some time to remove all the bloat.

Hmmm, that's the first I've heard of that. This rom is completely stock, but yes, not debloated. I just installed es file explorer and deleted all the crap it comes with. And for the other poster, this will not wipe everything if you do a dirty flash. And I'm using it as my dd with zero issues.

Glad to hear it. I have the MG2 tar as well. Anyone interested in a deodex/debloat of that? And silver, how's the build working for you?

Over 300 downloads, thanks everyone! I haven't heard any feedback, so I'm assuming it is working ok. Let me know!
I'm wondering is this ROM a daily driver or are there any kinks that anyone can report on.
