[V510 GPE] Updating to Google Experience Launcher - G Pad 8.3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For those of us with the GPE, will this work pretty seemlessly?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2561057

Well, I got anxious, it works. Just download the APK and install. Hit home so it prompts you which to use and select launcher as Always.

Just got my Gnex and I have some questions

So my Gnex arrived from Google last night, and I am in the process of setting it up. However three things immediately jumped out at me that I was hoping to get clarification on. First, when I long press the screen I am not shown the option for widgets. All it shows me is wallpaper options which I found weird since obviously Android is big on widgets. Is it supposed to be like this, or am I missing a setting somewhere? Second, for the life of me I can not find the settings for the default launcher. I would like to add some new icons but I am unable to do so. Lastly, all the other icons can be long pressed and then removed, with the exception of the Google search bar at the top. In all previous Android phones I was able to add or delete anything from the home screen, again, am I missing something or is this a "feature"??
open the app drawer ad you can drag icons and widgets to the screens.
to remove the pesky search bar (a "feature"!) you need a 3rd party launcher such as Apex or Nova, from the play store (the free versions are fine)
Widgets are now under a tab in the app draw.
I believe you can remove the Google search bar by selecting a different search provider in the settings list.
As far as launcher settings I think u need a custom rom to do that.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
1) They are located in your app drawer, Right at the end after your Apps
2) Think this is located in the settings menu, but is Limited. Been so long since i was on stock
3) It can be removed IIRC, but the space is not useable.
All in all, You might want to look at an alternative launcher like Apex or Nova, All are close to stock but with a wealth of features

I used Apex on my previous device and I will likely use it again, but my question is are the things I mentioned supposed to be happening with the stock setup?
Yes

I guess its back to Apex for me. I was kind of hoping the "pure" Google experience would be a little better, but I guess you still need to tweak things.

My wife just got the GN two days ago, upgrading from a Droid Inc running Stock+ rom. I actually like the new features of ICS. Seems very different coming from Sense, two versions old. I'm not using an Android device, but if I were, the GN would almost definitely be my pick right now.

Sense is terrible and I will never again purchase a device with that abomination installed on it! I had sense on my Sensation (previous phone) and then I rooted it, killed sense, and was running an AOSP ROM for the past few months.
Remove search bar:
Menu > Settings > Apps > All > Scroll down to google search bar (believe thats what it says) > disable.
Gone.

I actually like Sense and would not have objected if my wife insisted on the Rezound or the upcoming Inc 4G. It does have some very useful widgets and is pretty slick looking. Doesn't matter anyhow, I'm not on Android and wife loves her new GN. Hopefully she'll get the 4.0.4 update today or at least this week to iron out some of the small annoyances.

Samsung Galaxy S4 TouchWiz launcher

So here's the story, I saw some cool apps that were only available for Samsung devices, I did some searching, and I ended up with some files completely irrelevant to what I was originally looking for,
These files were flashable zips of the S4's TouchWiz launcher and the weather widget to go long with it.
For some random reason (boredom), I decided to flash these (after a backup of course).
Guess what?
They work!
Not just "they work" with some glitches. I mean perfectly smooth with not a single problem!
Update: it seems that the app drawer shortcut cannot be re-positioned from the far right of the four quick-access shortcut bar thing (whatever you call it. If anyone finds a way to fix this, feel free to let us know!)
Update 2: the launcher seems to close and re-open quickly every few hours, it might just be me or the launcher may be just a tiny bit unstable. Either way, it's barely noticeable and doesn't affect the launcher's functionality.
Here's the links to the files:
(I did not upload these, credit goes to the uploader specified in the link)
The launcher

The weather widget

I may be more hyped about this than I should be, but either way,
Enjoy!
good find buddy, as far as the launcher opening and closing, ima try something. with samsung i think the twframework.jar is in the classpath in the ramdisk. i added it to the classpath and flashed both zips. lets see if it fixes anything, i'll let you know tomorrow.
-cheers

I'm sorry, but I've been changing roms and launchers almost daily to find which ones work best for me.
I only posted about this launcher to let others know.
To be honest I didn't even keep it for more than a couple hours.

Google brings KitKat experience to all 4.1 and newer ROMS... thoughts?

ok so this is awkward.... seems google has released the new Google Search and Google Experience Launcher for all handsets running 4.1 and higher..... with Google ripping the forefront of KitKat out why move to it?
Lets get a list going as to what KitKat brings to the table behind the scenes....
1)better memory managment
2)Smoother UI experience(butter+)
3)built in printer support API!!! I love printing from my phone now!
For those that want to try the new Search and Google Experience Launcher here are the links.
Download Google Search 3.1.8 APK
Download Google Experience Launcher APK
yes this turns on "Ok Google" from the launcher and also allows Google Search to talk/ask questions back to you.
I still think we need KitKat as I have been running it and it is very smooth and seems to be snappier than the stock rom.
FYI the launcher will NOT work on our stock roms!!!
It is working on other phones with 4.1 but not our phone and stock rom(with stock kernel). You can use some modded 4.1 stock roms that replace the kernel. As I believe it is a kernel based issue there will likely never be a fix as no-one is going to put in the time or effort.
Well, the Launcher still needs to be side loaded even after the Search App updates, so it is a little different there. I like having hangouts handle sms. I also like the little things like the touch sounds and such. All of these things can be emulated, but it still takes work and a little knowledge to get a kit kat experience on a different stock rom.

This is true but the launcher will be on the play store and it has been reported that a card in now will popup asking if you want it.
For a stock rom you get the stability over most other roms but I must say KK on ours has been a really big surprise.
I sideloaded the new now on KK and the feedback is pretty sweet, no more hunting to find the right number to txt or call it will ask you and you simply talk back.
For me it's all about consistency in the experience. It drives me crazy to see a stock dialer or stock messaging app when I am trying to create an AOSP experience. That's why I generally go for AOSP based ROMS. It's just jarring to have the settings menu come up with a white background. OCD

Were you (or anybody) able to get this to work properly on ZVC? Tried the above, plus looking to get a potential lib, keep getting "Google Search" FC.

opppsss forgot to add that blurb. The launcher doesn't work on the LG OG stock roms. other 4.1 roms do work so it has something to do with the stock rom.
I'll add that in. The new Google search(Google Now) should be fine.
OP updated!!!!
Launcher didn't work for me on optimus 4.6 the OK Google feature worked but when I tried to add the search widget, OK Google went away. I don't know how to get it back yet either
Edit: turns out it went away cause I switched the language. OK Google command now works again

Just seen that there is an update for the english language pack that needs to be installed.
slid left to Google Now
scroll to the bottom
hit the three dots
select settings
select voice
select offline speech recognition
for those in the US ensure that English shows up and it is vers 28. For all others ensure you have downloaded your language.
BTW KitKat ROM users... this is NOT for you as it is all setup!

Google Launcher non rooted device

I love HTC Sense launcher the most among all others, although the folders have been bothering me since the day started using my M9, I used my One S for almost 3 years and this has never been an issue but with lollipop and bigger screen the folder design is bothering me, the square dark shape is not a good match for the rest of the design. anyway, I don't want to root my phone and I just read that I can download google launcher from play store and use it as my home launcher. My question is, has any of you tried using google launcher and came across with any problems? I really wanna try it but I don't want to mess up my new precious M9
thank you for help!

Google now launcher rotation

gratz... i guess?
whats the point of this post? are you trying to tell us there is a new update to the launcher? are you saying you modded/hacked the launcher itself or made an edit to the build.prop to enable it? or have you simply used the search function and are telling us that procedures that are described in other (device-)forums/threads work for the 5x as well?
just wondering since in my opinion this is an option that would certainly make the experience with the 5x a little more fluent without using a third party launcher.
There was an update to the launcher and its the most glorious day of my ****ing life. Lonmg have i awaited the landscape mode in the google now launcher
Your welcome F.....s
What is the launcher version? I have 1.3.large and it tells me it's the latest. No rotation here..

from what i could find, it's actually not an update to the launcher, but rather the google app through which the launcher settings are managed.
my version (without landscape) is 5.7.14.19.arm64, the latest slowly being rolled out is 5.8.47.19.arm64.
could be wrong though.
anyway, my actual launcher version is the same as yours, and as far as i can see there were no updates of that pushed to the playstore. oh the waiting game.

Easier way to get rotation is to become a Google tester. The version that it will allow you to download has the allow rotation option.
