I'm running the 2014 - 01 - 05 nightly on my Samsung Galaxy S4 M919. The compass works on some apps but not on others. I thought it was hardware until I found that the gyros work in all axis for games such as F-Sim and compass apps such as Advanced Compass. BUT, in the app GPS Status & toolbox, the compass and pitch and roll are locked to zero, calibration had no effect. Also the app Google maps shows the compass icon locked to North and will not function with rotation.
Is there something in CM11 that changes the way the accelerometers communicate with apps and some of them can interpret the data??
Cheers

It's possible that the app that isn't working isn't compatible with KitKat ROMS yet.
Not all apps have been updated.

Yes, I see this too. In maps the compass works after about 10-15 seconds. As you say, the compass in "GPS Status" seems locked.
I don't see much traffic about this problem and I wonder if it is an S4 only issue (I'm using the tmo version jfltetmo).
Looking at the raw sensors in the "Sensor List" app I see the data all the time (YAS532 Magnetic sensor), so I don't think there is any hardware problem (or even low level software issue).

I too have this problem, but it worked on CM11 with the December 2013 nightlies. It's only recently that this has been a problem for me. I am using the Rogers S4 (jfltecan) and am using the latest unified build for jflte.
Running CM11 snapshot from 2014-07-08 on my Spring S4, I have serious magnetic compass issues. Either it cannot be read at all (like in GPS Test or GPS Status apps), or very interestingly reads two logical revolutions for every physical revolution (Google Maps). That is, if I point the phone north and spin it around 180 degrees to the south, Google Maps' directional indicator performs a 360 rotation. Continuing to spin the phone another 180 degrees back to north has the directional indicator performing another whole 360 rotation.
Weird, right?
The magnetic compass works perfectly in all apps under CM10.2 from 2014-01-31. I've gone back and forth between the ROMs, so I can't imagine it's a hardware issue.
Hey all,
I've got the SGH-M919 and my magnetic sensor doesn't work. I downloaded a compass app and it doesn't move at all. I tried calibrating it and hovering a magnet over the phone quickly, but that didn't work either.
In the diagnostic menu (*#0*#) is shows:
---------------------------------------------------------
Magnetic: 2, x: 0, y: 0, z: 0
Azimuth: 0 Pitch: 0 Roll: 0
(on the black graphic with the red line)
"Need for calibration"
---------------------------------------------------------
The Selftest fails but Power Noise Test shows "Pass".
Any ideas what I can do about this? I'd greatly appreciate your help!

Anyone experienced this? (Im Not on Froyo!)
- Desire refuses to switch to landscape mode in gallery. It does it once in a while but its getting pretty stubborn.
- Google Sky (might be compass related prob) always shows the same part of sky wherever you direct the phone to
I quess my phone accelometer needs calibration or something. Anyone with ideas?
Thanks
never experienced this problem in skymaps. use it a lot.
defo try and see can you reset the magnetic compass. Does it work in a compass app for example? get a simple compass app and try it. If it doesn't work in either app maybe its a hardware fault?
I've been experiencing issues with the gps for a while. For starters, it takes a long time for the turn by turn navigation to start. Just the other day it kept repeating the same street even though I was no where near that street.
I use Google maps, I removed the att navigation, and I'm using the deodexed rom. fyi.
Anyone else experiencing issues?

So, i'm assuming your Ion is rooted? With stock GB on my Ion, i had some very strange gps related stuff happening for the first few days i owned it. I was constantly losing the ability to go into compass mode in google maps, and once that happened...it would not regain gps signal, it would just constantly 'seek' with the blinking icon. If i didn't mess with it for a few hours, it would come back for a bit...but then get lost again. It wasn't just maps, my tracks app wouldn't get a lock either. However, it was always related to when compass mode simply stopped working.
I dug around a little and found people claiming that the orientation sensors can interfere with gps connectivity, and any compass app will reset that within the phone when you install them. Sounded gimmicky, but it worked (i just downloaded the first free compass i found), and i haven't had a single problem since with GB...and after the ics update so far.
But if you rooted your phone, and it was working fine before, that could be the culprit...and i don't have feedback for that yet, as i haven't rooted yet.
So you just installed a random compass app and the navigation worked?

I am using Paranoid Android 3.99 on my N7100. From day 1 after flashing, the magnetic sensor doesn't seem to work. I have installed Marine Compass from the play store
The compass keep on going round and round when I place to phone on a horizontal desk. The same thing also happens with Google Maps. The location pointer keep on rotating at its own axis (as if I am turning round and round on my spot!)
Is anyone else facing this issue or have faced this before and know how to resolve this? Help is highly appreciated!
Hi everyone,
I'm running Carbon 4.4.2 with PA Gapps; I don't understand what is my phone's problem, i mean:
I was playing Ingress, switched to compass mode and the view won't rotate, like my compass was broken, or "rotate" jerky (<-- google translate word, i hope it's right), not following che continuous rotation. I tried with maps, compass mode won't move. Then I recalibrated the compass (8-movement with hand) and tested the compass with some apps on the store, no problems. I tried Maps, no problems with rotation until i tried again the navigation mode, the view is stuck and won't rotate. Tried to reset, re-flash rom, change rom (tried SlimKat 4.4.2, but with PA Gapps, slim's didn't flash well) but now i'm back to carbon, now the "final" problem is:
Maps and compass works apparently fine.
Navigation mode doesn't work (jerky on ingress, stuck on maps)
If i use the phone with screen down (like i'm pointing the camera to the sky) it works smoothly
If i use navigation by foot in Maps it works smoothly and pretty good. If i switch to navigation by car it's stuck.
I tested the sensors with S Tools and they work (i'm not an expert abouth this but i think that if the movements on the axes change the sensors (gyroscope, magnetic, etc) work, can't say if they work how they should but it seems so to me..)
I really don't know what the problem is, anyone experienced something like this or knows what it possibly can be?
I thought it coul be a problem of "google services" (gapps) and installed waze to try something "not google", but it won't even lock the gps (but i didn't try outside for this one)
Thanks in advance, i'm desperate

As some of you guys might already know Redmi devices have Gyroscope issue but it get fixed with Calibration (in my case temporarily)
previously in Android pie, while playing pubg Gyroscope was working fine with no issue, but i had the issue with my gyroscope while charging where my aim was moving on its own even on a flat surface. but it used to happen while charging only (& my Gyroscope setting is always on with 190 sensitivity just for the info)
And now in Android 10 it happens after every 10, 15 minutes doesn't matter how many times i 've calibrated my device but it never get fixed permenantly.
But I know the temporarily solution:
About > All Specs >Tap 3 times on kernal version > Press on the top right corner & go to additional tools
Acc Calibration Tool:
Accelerometer ( not all values are zero) just calibrate your accelerometer, & your device should be on a flat surface
Gyroscope Calibration Tool:
Gyroscope (all values are zero but some are in (-ve) zero don't know why ?)
Calibrate Gyroscope - also device should be on a flat surface
check your Gyroscope issue with 'Compass app' and values should be constant on a flat surface
You can also use 'Gyroscope Test App'
in my case:
mine only gets fixed after calibrating and waiting for 20 seconds at least. i use Gyroscope test app to know whether my Gyroscope issue is fixed or not
and mine never get fixed after device reboot.
seems like this is the Hardware issue. i tried to hard reset changed rom to miui 12 came back to miui 11 but the issue is still there.
and calibration is the temporarily solution for me until i don't reboot my device.
didn't tried custom rom yet.
Did any of you guys have the similar issue, or any of you know how to fix it? Please Help!
Strange seems like no one is facing this issue
I am facing the same problem from past two days on my redmi note 8 pro . It can be fixed temporarily by rebooting the device . But after opening CIT by tapping kernel version my accelerometer is not showing anything it's blank

Sorry to say that i cannot help ??
Facing the same issue. Screen doesn't rotate, accelerometer and gyroscope values are blank in CIT
On a steady table using the built in level function in the compass app was showing 1 degree (table not perfectly flat) for a couple of minutes and now it`s changed to 2 degrees and has been showing that for over five minutes, The only problem i have had is if i am on the home-screen in portrait mode with the phone on the table and click on my browser (opera) the screen will change to landscape mode, Then if i lift up the front of the phone the display will change to portrait mode, It does this with a few apps and it can be a pain, I could download a screen rotation all to fix the problem if i needed, So no major problems and i am not phone gamer, I prefer my 360 or PC
i hope this work for you
If your gyroscope is temporary work after restart you can fix it with my guide:
1.restart your device
2.open the cit test (multiple tap on kernel number)
3.calibrate your gyroscope in flat surface and make sure your gyroscope is still active
4.follow the other sensor calibration until you complete the compass calibration .
4.you can exit cit and check all your sensors
note:do this as fast as you can

:::my note8 pro also has same issue
i also tried all the tricks, calibration and all stuff but it only worked temporarily. if i place my phone on flat surface, it stops moving for some minutes but starts moving again.
i even tried changing my miui version from global to indian varient but the problem is still on. these days when i press the phone on top left corner, the gyroscope moves even more faster and when i press it around middle, it starts moving in opposite direction but never stops. somewhere i have hheard that this may be due to hardware issue, because of heating.
