[Q] 4.4... to flash or not to flash - Sony Xperia ZL

Would any of you who are currently running one of the 4.4 roms care to give some feedback on your experience - I've used CM 7-10, SlimBean 4.3, and Pacman 4.3 before on other devices...
Hopefully this isn't a redundant post, but I don't see nearly as much use feedback as I had in traditional threads that I've seen in other forums. Though there seems to be a much lower volume of people in this forum as well... Hopefully this doesn't piss off developers as that's not my intention... I need my phone to function as a daily driver... so I'm asking for feedback before I greatly alter my phone...
Do you use a 4.4 rom you use as your daily driver?
Are there any gotcha's or does the rom fulfill your every need/desire?
Does Wi-Fi work consistently/well?
Does bluetooth/A2DP streaming work consistently/well? Does the music app provide mp3 tag info via a2dp? (what music app do you use?)
How's the camera image quality? (I feel like the stock 4.3 camera leaves something to be desired with is sad... Has the CM team fixed sphere so it's functional/consistent? Does it do panorama shots?
How's system stability? (This may be meaningless if everyone's flashing nightlies everyday)
How's call quality?
Does your phone Heat up with basic use? How's battery life?

Well, I recommend you to read the threads about every 4.4 based rom, then you'll know most of the issues. I wouldn't use any of them.
Before my last Nexus 4, I had a Razr Maxx with 4.4.2 Slim rom. The first week using as my main rom everything was fine, fast, stable and battery saver. But all the problems started in the second week. Freezing at main screen, force closing most of the apps... I had to reinstall or even update to another version.
I got tired of that and rolled it back to Stock 4.1.2. The phone gained another stand. More battery life (3300mah was awesome), speed and stability. My sister still using it with the same version and she had no problems in five months.
If you decide to use, you'll need patience to keep updating your phone constantly till the final release.

The reason I'd created this post is because much of the information I was asking about wasn't apparent in either the FXP or Omni posts...
When I look at the 4.4 issues log on the FXP post, I see so many issues that would directly impact me, I'm concerned about actually running that.
Perhaps I'm finding the wrong threads, but there isn't alot of extra info in the ZL forums... I'm unsure if the Z forum posts apply.

[Q] Which ROM offers the following?

I've searched, trawled and read through so many threads and cannot make my mind up which way to turn (I'm so indecisive). There is so much choice (which is a good thing in some ways and not so good in others) but it's confused the hell out of me. I could flash various ROM's and kernels all the while having to restore my data each time and run it for a while to see if it is suitable for my needs. This seems to the moderators general consensus for those asking what the 'best ROM' is (Understandable). But this (having to flash ROM's and kernels each time) is tedious and there is always some element of risk that you could end up with a bad flash the more you do this.
So here I am asking. Please note I am *NOT* asking which the best overall ROM is. I understand perfectly well that there is no best ROM and each ROM has different functionality and features that are suited to different peoples needs. I am asking which ROM suits *MY* needs. If moderators decide that I am asking what is the best ROM then I guess I will have to try harder to argue my case.
I don't mind if it's GB, ICS or JB - obviously I would *LOVE* to have a JB ROM but it's still in its infancy and has certain issues simply because there is and never will be an official JB ROM for my phone (Thanks Sony!).
My current setup is a 2011 Arc S currently running JJ Hybrid 3.1 (still) and ArcKnight kernel (forget which build).
I am not overly interested in fancy GUI's, themes, extra functionality or overclocking, although it would nice to have them 'just so long as they don't impact on performance and stability'.
Things I want.
#Rooted with CWM is a given obviously
#As lag free as possible (It takes several seconds to launch Contacts at present and laggy key presses in the phone dialer annoy)
#Good battery performance
#Increased memory
#Bloatware removed
#Removal of or fixed/tweaked default apps (For some reason the default browser sucks CPU/battery dry and I have disabled it on current ROM).
#Smooth 720p video (is this even possible either in the FW or through a mod?)
#Good camera performance (Use a mod?)
#Status bar with quick toggles and notifications
#Good WIFI, 2G,3G/HSDPA performance (especially if 3G is tweaked as I get poor signal in some places)
#Bravia engine (1 or 2?)
#Correctly functioning hardware including LED's/Side LED/Buttons/Sensors (brightness, rotation etc)
#STABILITY (as little bugs as possible basically)
#Easy upgrade path between builds (not having to wipe data each time although I realize this is sometimes required)
#WIFI tethering
I don't care much for HDMI output but if it works it's a bonus. Things like USB OTG and USB mass storage would also be useful but not essential.
I think that's all of it. If moderators still feel this is a 'best ROM' thread feel free to contact me privately to cast your warnings. Hopefully though they will see this is a bit more specific than that and actually asks more pertinent questions rather than a blanket 'which ROM is best' question.
Thanks for reading
I can't comment on a rom, but for camera, most definitely Cybershot mod . Pictures look amazing

Thanks. I will look into it. Seems it's only for ICS ROM's but if there is an ICS ROM that meets the above criteria I will check it out.
For me, right no, Atomic Gb 3.0 Xtreme Silencer is going to update it to 3.1 now, so u can flash it. It is the most complete ROM now for me, with almost everything u said in ur list

Hi.
While this may not be a best ROM thread as you say, its just as equally annoying. You've listed what most of us want from a ROM, and as you say you've read this that and the other then its time to pick one and flash it. If you think the process of flashing custom ROMs is tedious then learn how to mod, tweak a stock ROM to your own liking then you won't need to rely on others to tell you what to flash.

Did u read that? Flash and test yourself
We can't say, what fits you, we don't know your life. You know it the best, you should find the perfect one.
XDA is not a place, where people are slaves, stop being lazy and do something yourself aswell.
Look at ROM's overviews, features, functions, read comments (if you want to know more about the ROM) etc.
Try them, put them to the test in regular usage. Then you find one. We can't say, which one is good for you.
yeah he is right!
Atomic Gb is awesome !
xtremesilencer has done some great work to make it!
ohhh wait a min!
i am xtremesilencer that was a joke
and if you want to know about a rom then go to the thread or check the feedback
dont open new new threads !!!!!
I'm on ICS because of the mobile data manager (built in, doesn't work on gb) as i have a limited data plan.
I'm right now on the xperia t rom, it is really great, the battery lasts up to two days. (3-4 hours display on, around 10h mobile data and wifi is always on).
Using the stock 587 kernel. Never had such an amazing battery life

Whilst I understand the sentiment of 'try them for yourself' and 'you are just being lazy' and 'read the comments' etc. It takes *TIME* I don't need overclocking. I don't need all the fancy themes. I don't need a ton of tweaks other than those that meet the basic requirements I have listed.
As I said whilst there is a healthy development community on this particular device, it is hard work to find the right ROM. I have to go through the list of ROMS, kernels and mods in the thread stickied in 'General' (I noticed at least one ROM is missing from that list btw). On the whole it does not tell me a lot other than name, ROM, base (GB, ICS, JB) and then you have to spend a lot of time trying to find out all the info about the ROM by going to the ROM's thread, read about it's features, how to install it, which kernels work best with it, how to fix, patch or workaround any problems found (usually buried deeper into the thread with sometimes 'hundreds' of replies so you might not know about the patches and workarounds until you actually install it and when you ask in the thread someone says it was mentioned earlier in the thread which you now have to search through) etc etc ad nauseam.
I'm just looking for a shortlist of ROM's to try based on others opinions that meet my criteria.
I do also believe that there should be a sticky that instead of ostracizing members for asking 'which is the best ROM' as there currently is (which I know can be annoying for the moderators) instead should offer opinions and experiences. Which ROM's offer which features and how well they perform and yes, perhaps even a poll.
This would be the 'go to' thread for all those people (including myself) who are stuck for choice.
But perhaps this is too much work (I guess you could say to me I should do it then and keep it updated since I am so interested in it)...
The forum is chaotic as it is. But this is the nature of forums.

Unfortunately, that's what most people would have to go through to actually find a rom that they would stick with. Luckily I tried 1 and never moved away because it was suffice. Here's a list to shorten the task, tremendously for you
Ultimate HD
Beautiful ICS
Jelly Sandwich - I've been using this one for months without changing. I'd recommend version 7.4 as it's stable and anything version 8 and above are a hassle to install and have ugly icons =/
Atomic GB - The only gingerbread based rom listed as opposed to ics so bear in mind the cybershot wouldn't work
I can't really comment on any of these roms' 'personal sufficiency' other than jelly sandwich, but these are the ones I would test if I were you good luck
well XDA is a dev site where devs share their creations for each other, they're not obliged to put them up here and frankly it takes a billion times more work to make a rom than to look through the ROM threads

Xperia T ROM is the way to go!
I too was in the same state 3-4 months back and all I wanted was a stable & smooth ROM (better than stock, of course). So, I went thro most of the threads and based on the feedback of many, I narrowed down on Ultimate HD. Sure its a better ROM and I was happy using it for close to 2 months. But after prolonged usage, it started to lag. Only then, I started experimenting with multiple ROMs.
There are ROM u would start hating it immediately after installing it and there are which will make u to stick with it for a while. After testing bunch of ROMs, I finally landed on Xperia T ROM. Its not the most talked about ROM around, but definitely has its own fan following and Im definitely going to be one among them. It has all the MODs that I wanted (toggles, latest apps, cybershot, small apps etc...) and yet it offered smoothness and free RAM of close to 100 MB. Most importantly, it offered loads of options while installing (in Aroma Installer). So, you can pick and choose whatever u want. It is one of the few ROMs wherein Sound Enhancements in Walkman player and Online mode in Album works out of the box without any tweaking!
So, I suggest you to give it a shot. Im sure u wont regret it
Hmm. Just read that T ROM has broken wifi tethering. Also read that AOSP ROM's don't have in call mute? It's quite a bit involved installing that ROM by the look of things too. I will monitor the thread for a while though and ask about the in call mute feature.
Sometimes, it's not about the ROM, it's the mods you flash on the ROM. I have been using stock ROM for quite some time and I have flashed a few mods to tweak and improve the stock ROM. You can go to the Themes and Apps section to find these kind of mods.

HELP! Need advice! 4.1.2 vs 4.2.1

I recently upgraded from 4.1.2 (12/2/12 release) to 4.2.1 (1/26/13 release). My phone is buggy as hell and I am getting a lot of error messages because I did not do a full wipe. I am going to do a full wipe but cannot see any reason to stick with 4.2.1... Fast charging is gone, I dont really like the way the toggles are laid out, less lockscreen target icons, etc... there is nothing on this update that really makes me want to keep it.
Can anyone give their opinion on 4.2.1 vs 4.1.2? I enjoyed the 4.1.2 build and found it to be very stable (thats why I kept it so long) but if 4.2.1 is faster, more stable, better battery life etc I would prolly consider trying it after the wipe.
So what are your experiences between these two? why should I go with one over the other? Does anyone have tasks latest build of 4.1.2 (+gapps) or have a suggestion for another rom (I wouldn't be apposed to trying something new!)
Important:
battery life
stability
performance
Functionality
lockscreen targets (lol)
Fast charge option was definitely nice to have as well!
Not important:
Unicorn bootscreen animation
Thanks in advance for everyone's input! :highfive:
stability and functionality are key things.
for instance, bluetooth streaming is finnicky unless you mess with it on CM10.1, seemingly fine on CM10.
bleeding edge generally means that you're leveraging stability and functionality for new features.
i'm still on 4.1.2 (ParanoidKangDroid) and enjoying the experience here. if you're not experiencing any issues, i would say stick it out until you're ready to move forward and the bugs have been identified and ironed out by early adopters.
Anybody else? I would really appreciate some input
My phone is buggy as hell and I need to flash something whether it be 2.1 or 1.2.
Does anyone have the last 4.1.2 build by task? Will I get flamed for asking on the development thread?
Sorry for all of the questions I just need some answers/direction

If you want my 4.1.2 release then all you need to do is follow the rules and search for it. Its been answered over a hundred times and wouldn't be hard to find. Also. Your device is buggy only because you caused that. If you refuse to follow the installation instructions then you should expect a lot of issues. Those instructions are there for good reason. Also. There is a fast charge option. You just didn't search on what you need to get it. You will come across a ton of useful information by doing so. Promise.
Currently I keep switching between Task's 4.2 and 4.1. I like a lot of things about 4.2 like chronos, the toggles, notification layout etc.. but I also switch to 4.1 a lot because I need a working BT. To be honest, Task's latest 4.1 is so freakibg smooth and stable that unless you really need 4.2, I don't see a reason to upgrade asap.
With that said, other than the BT issues, 4.2 is also perfect so it is only a matter of days/weeks before I am switching full time to 4.2.

Yea it ultimately comes down to performance and functionality, I have to use the phone for work so I think reverting to 4.1.2 is the best option. Thanks for the input!
EDIT: Two other questions... Is 10/12/12 the most up to date gaps for the build? Is the latest kt kernel optimized for this rom?

12/19 are the latest Gapps I believe. Also, there's a stock kernel for a reason. Ktoon's kernel may or may not work better on your phone, it depends on both your phone and your settings/way you use your phone.

Yeah I am going to test the stock kernel for now and may switch to Ktoon's later down the road. I seem to get better battery life and performance from it. Could you tell me where to find this Gapps version for tasks 4.1.2 aokp? I looked on the link provided a couple posts above and also searched the forum but have had no luck (also tried google).

In his OP.
You can also get them from goomanager (in the market).
Thank you guys, I find this thread informative to me. Thanks to OP as well!! :highfive:
Well I am back to 4.1, the only thing I miss from 4.2 is the chronus clock. Otherwise I am happy with my decision after seeing some of the bugs that are out there! I will end up switching eventually but I need something rock solid with little to no countability issues. Thanks everyone for all of the replies!

I couldnt find list of bugs for CM10, speciifcally for stable or Milestones.
If there is a link to what I'm asking for above that will be great. If not, i'll continue reading through the threads.
I'm looking at CM10 and I've been reading lots of issues even at stable......sometimes it makes me think
1) Why do people flash custom roms?
2) is it worth getting a new menu but in exchange your camera, bt, or whatever might not work. Or worse yet, something that you need but only discover that it doesnt work when you use it on the spot?
understand that some of these roms have bugs to be worked out due to the fact that they're still very new. also, many users experience bugs/glitches, etc on stable roms because they dont follow the developers installation instructions. take the time to read up on these roms and you'll be able to conclude that many bugs are the result of user error. a solid rom by a great developer (installed properly) can make your S3 the best phone you've ever had. what are you running at the moment?

running Paranoid Android.
It's fairly stable, I haven't ran into too many problems yet.
I did notice it was a bit laggier than my stock ICS after my ICS was supercharged with V6.
its also a bit laggier on games.
It delivers a few customizations i like, like calls only log, custom boot animation, customizable quick launch, face unlock that is fickle.....but i just cant see as of right now why I would change? I lose the ability to make folders on trebuchet (yes....i know Nova Prime), I lose hand swipe screen capture, i lose smart stay (yes there are apps for it). I almost wnat to say battery is a bit worse than stock, during idle its about the same.
You also lose s planner which i found a replacement apps. It just seems like a lot of work restoring sms, tibu, changing all settings to your liking, reinstalling launcher and load settings, loading contact information etc etc for the ability to add toggles, sliding background......
I'm cool for the aesthetics, but i wonder is there any practical improvements, as in performance, speed, signal, battery life.... i think i would enjoy that rom better..........would going to AOKP be the one for me?
I enjoy AOKP, but I could care less about many of the touchwiz features that many people look for/enjoy. I love the performance and reliability of AOKP as well as the ability to tweak/customize. Download Super Backup for your sms/apps, etc, make a nandroid and give something else a shot if you'd like. I've been using AOKP's 4.1.2 release since late last year and I'm not switching any time soon. I've downloaded and flashed the Nexus 4 camera (on xda forum) and have exactly the S3 I want

Yea i figured i'd jump to AOKP next since PA has CM10 integrated within it already.
I've also tried Ariel (ICS rom), not only did it lack customizability, it wasnt stable. it felt like a less stable version of stock..... i was highly disappointed in my first custom rom. Its not that i like TW necessarily, but the way that everything is set up, its pretty smooth for me and the battery is good too.
I want to try out AOKP or PK before making a decision though.

[Q] [4.2.2] PARANOIDANDROID v3.60 | HALO |

Hello guys i have few questions about this rom from WoH, at the moment i am using 4.2.2 rom based on CM 10.1 from VJ, but his version will not have update soon, so i decide to check install new rom from my topic. I have few question if You can answer it will be nice:
*1* Does work properly the sound of messages? For VJ roms i usually use low sound fixer, but without luck. So rom have any issuess about sound? Works fine? Sound is loud and i can hear the sms sound? (Everybody who have VJ rom know about this problem)
*2* Does work the headset or earphones without any problem? (Now when i plug in my headset i always have soft reboot)
*3*Can You compare to VJ rom based on CM 10.1? (Speed, performance, battery drain, soft reboots etc.)
*4*It is possible to disable HOLO - i mean thing like quick menu
*5*Could You write Pros and cons of the WoH rom? Any problems issuess and possible fix or some tips?
Thank You guys!
//just sent via tapatalk
Easiest way would be to nandroid backup your current rom, then install this ROM and try it out for yourself.
1 - don't know
2 - don't know
3 - this will be very different for different people and setups, again you are the best judge based on your setup and usage, not someone else's
4 - yes, I use PA on my nexus 7. It's disabled by default I believe.
5 - pros and cons will be quite subjective, read the thread to see what's working and other people's responses. Again you'll be the best judge if you install it.

Easiest way would be to nandroid backup your current rom, then install this ROM and try it out for yourself.

Well, thanks, but You don't help me so much. I found on the forum few things, at first i want to compare to HTC DESIRE in DESIRE thread not to Nexus 7 or any other device. For example few things work perfect on nexus 4, not on Desire like Camera. About pros and cons it will be for example, good performance, but fast battery drain. Many other things. So You don't know so much. I ask people which got experience with HTC Desire and have this rom on this phone.
So BUMP please

The ROM is still a port, and I've used it for a different device true. However Halo is part of the ROM, and it can be disabled. Other things can be found out by reading the thread, or better yet....just installing it and trying it.

I may not have experience in that exact ROM, but trust me I know enough to help you as I have helped many other people here
"Good performance, but fast battery drain" is subjective....how exactly do you define "good" or "fast" in this case? Some people define good as "stable...but has a few random reboots", but is this ok for you? Others don't mind lag, but might find it good as it's latest android with a few more features.
Fast battery drain varies massively depending on how you use the device, no two people use them the same way. You have not told us how you even use your device, and what you define to be "good" or "fast battery drain"
From bumping it, you could get some replies from a limited number of users. Some saying it's AMAZING / LAGGY / OK, some saying it has amazing battery / poor battery / suitable for medium / light / heavy usage...but you have no idea how they use their phone, how many ROMs they've tried for comparison, or the age of their battery etc. And again their perception of good or fast battery drain is different from yours. You may think getting 'reviews' from others is useful, but I'm merely warning you they can be very misleading for various reasons
In all this time you have waited for replies...you could have easily made a nandroid backup and just tried the ROM yourself. This is always the best way of testing for your usage and setup like I said, not from other people with completely different usage...then you make up your own mind and see if it's suitable for you
If you don't like it, you have a nandroid backup to go back to, so I don't see why you're waiting...
Well, You suggest to better install before ask about sth. At the moment imo i am using a good rom. I create topic to not spam thread in developers section. I have time to change rom, but i want to do it in future. Some people, used other roms and maybe have experience and they can share opinions.
So at the moment few questions:
- is here in WoH roms a soft reboots? How often?
- as i know all JB roms got problems with camera, what about recording? In VJ rom my video playback, which i record is lagged and broken, what with WoH rom?
- there is some issuess with headset or earphones, when You plug into the phone?
- is here a low sound notification problem? Any fix?
I am asking, because i don't want to spend time to testing, i can install or sth, but not have too much time for reinstalling and finding the best one. Few questions give me an answer what i am looking for
For me it is better to ask, than shouting about problem.

[Q] What roms are good daily drivers?

Hi There,
I noticed we are not supposed to ask questions about "the best ultimate mega rom", or anything similar. I hope this thread, however, is different enough to not violate those rules..
What ROM would you suggest as a good daily driver? I do not need the fastest rom, or the newest android version. I just need to flash something on my Arc so my sister can use the phone for few months without a need for any troubleshooting from my side.. She wants working texting and calling, snapchat, facebook, whatsapp, wifi, camera, music player. She doesn't care about bluetooth, or video recording, or radio. Here are my findings so far:
Official gingerbread is too old.
Official ICS is too slow, even after cleanup (removal of some unnecessary official apps).
I tried some LegacyXperia-based roms, and they were amazing EXCEPT battery life was 4-5 hours even if the phone was not in use.
What would you suggest? Perhaps an older build of Cyanogen Mod? If yes, which one? Any ROM that is reasonably fast and stable would be OK, as long as it is ICS or newer.
Thank you!
Legacy Xperia ROMs are good, you just need to tweak the ROM such that it doesn't use up a lot of battery

You're right.
As I don't care about latest android (well I do, but my sister doesn't), I have used LegacyXperia cm10.2 release version: cm-10.2-20140303-RELEASE-LegacyXperia-anzu
She is running it only for a day, but so far it seems remarkably stable and battery life seems good enough to last a day. I will report back here if anything changes, but so far so good!

CM10.1 is stabler & more battery than 10.2 . else theres not much other. or choose KK cm10.2 isnt best choice (if then better use 10.1)
Legacy Xperia CM 11
I'm using Legacy Xperia CM 11 with Android KitKat. It's pretty good. Many issues are resolved. Previously I used CM 10 nightly, the new one is way better than that. And the KitKat is light weight. But battery usage is kinda high.
Maybe you should try Ultimate HD, now version 5.0.1 but version 6.0.1 will be available soon. I have experienced nearly all custom ROMs for Arc and Ultimate HD seems the most stable Rom, good battery life, app compatibility, ... Cyanogen Mod is good but it has problem with app, especially camera apps downloaded from Google store; battery drains a little fast.
There are many choices when it comes to ROM, depending on how you use it. UHD is a good ROM for daily use, but if you play games with your phone then UHD is not a good choice because the base ROM itself cannot handle games well. If you want AOSP ROM with no modifications, you can use CM.
Things like battery life and apps can be managed if you search properly and apply the knowledge.
