Rooted & Unlocked

When I switch from dalvik to art in settings and after the reboot, I'm still in Davik. There's no compiling of apps after reboot either. Is there something I'm missing?

Do you have the Xposed framework installed? If you do, and try to turn on ART, it switches it back to prevent a bootloop.

Yes I do.
I'll uninstall Xposed and see what happens.

Yes, Xposed is the reason.

Dalvik now is just as fast. I installed these new mods on my N7 and N5, and see a big increase in speed.

Alright, I uninstalled Xposed; wiped dalvik and cache; rebooted; selected art; rebooted…and still on dalvik.
I don't know why it won't switch to art. I do have the franco kernal installed.
Any suggestions?

Some of my apps suddenly started to FC. I haven't changed anything, except switch from Franco to Trinity kernel. I'm on CNA 3.6.0.
I know at least about two of my apps that are problematic: iGag and PowerAmp. No matter how many times I reinstall them, they will just FC when I try to open them up. Clearing cache and dalvik-cache doesn't change anything.
Please help.

Try factory resetting, if fails then it could be a corruption, unstably or missing code from the new kernel you flashed.
Did the issue occurred when you flashed the kernel?

I just tried to use Franco again, but no difference.

I would also run a "fix permissions" in recovery. Solved the problem I was having on CNA as well. Wipe your cache, and dalvik, and see if that does it.
Re-flash in this order: cna, gapps, trinity kernel. At next reboot, boot to recovery & fix permissions. It's a ramdisk issue..
Before you wipe everything, try clean Dalvik cache first see if it helps

What I suggested above won't wipe anything and will fix it. Cleaning dalvik won't do anything.
Reflashing your ROM will indeed probably fix it.

hi all,
every time i boot up my phone i get the "android is upgrading" message...
i already searched the forum for a solution but non worked...
- re installed titanium backup - didn't work
- wiped dalvik and cache and fixed permission - didnt work
- some people suggested deleting titanium's odex file - i cant seem to find it in /data/app (the one which is on root level)
- even full wipe wont help, it'll work fine on 1st boot but after the phone is setup i'll get the message again
i could really use some help >.<

its rebuilding your dalvik at every boot. did you flash any mod? it could also be your rom/kernel if it has a dalvik wipe script included. some devs like to trick you into believing that their mod/rom/kernel is the fastest, so they delete you dalvik on every boot. this makes it appear, yes only appear, like their stuff is extra fast. but in reality, its just a clean dalvik. also, check your init.d folder such scripts.

then youre either using a custom kernel that includes such a script or youre using a mod that does it. are you using the supercharger script? if so, id get rid of it.

it should happen after flashing a new rom, or when you clear your dalvik. check if there is a init.d folder with such a script. a wipe doesnt get rid of the init.d folder, just user data.

you are using a 4.1.x rom and kernel? i just talked to Francisco Franco, he said his older kernels used to wipe dalvik upon boot.
I have similar problem. I wiped dalvik, and now it gives me Starting apps message every time it's loading. I know it's normal for apps to start lol, but I never had constant notification for it :/

Hmm using Franco 283...
But when I do a full wipe the kernel is wiped as well isn't it?
Sent from my Paranoid Powered Galaxy Nexus
maybe a rom/cpu control app with a wipe dalvik option?
Again, full wiping would delete these apps...
Maybe tomorrow I'll try installing an older version of the Rom... I hope it'll work cause this is starting to get frustrating

you think the kernel can be the problem? i see no mention of such a problem on the kernel thread
Well I guess it was a Rom issue or something...
Flashed a new version of it and now it working fine

Stock rooted deb on 4.4.2, whenever I try to switch to ART, it just reboots and stays on Dalvik.
Tried wiping cache and Dalvik cache, but that didn't make a difference.
Any suggestions short of a full wipe?

This is exactly what happened to me when I was using xposed and tried to enable ART. It will reboot and every time it will revert back to dalvik.

Yep I have been using xposed. Is ART worth getting rid of my xposed modules and the installer?
IMHO, no. I've got my UI tweaked just the way I like it with Xposed modules; any minor improvement in speed would not be worth the sacrifice for me. YMMV
When I choose ART in Developer Settings, my phone just reboots back and it's still on Dalvik. I'm on ARHD 20.1. This happened when I was on 2.22 stock too. Is there any work around to it? I really want to test ART on my M8

Thanks for the explanation! This reason seems plausible enough I'll disable xposed to run ART. Thanks for the knowledge
