Hi all, I am trying to find a sms/mms texting app for use on my Galaxy S3. The stock messaging app is buggy. I have tried google hangouts, gosms, and whatsapp but have not found a good replacement. Do you have any suggestions as to what I should download? I need it to be free and have no ads.
Thanks!

It's alright it's really simplistic though, I prefer ChompSMS personally as it has the option to schedule messages. It really helps me not forget to send important texts or remember someones birthday. I also came from the old iOS jailbreak days and was using BiteSMS which was made by the same people that make Textra and ChompSMS and I've been using their apps for years.
Textra = Great if you want a lightweight modern SMS App
ChompSMS = More Features than you can shake a stick at.

okay so with the new handcent sms update a feature included is "Default messaging application"
the description for this is:
"Set handcent as the default messaging application, completely disable stock messaging application and 3rd application for SMS or MMS."
my question is, does this make it possible to delete the stock messaging app through root uninstaller?
And i only want to do this because they finaly came out with an ALL black theme lol.
In my experience with using this same option on GO SMS, yes, if you set Handcent to handle incoming/outgoing SMSs and MMSs, you can delete stock messenger. I'd suggest just freezing it in Titanium Backup if you can, though. And if you delete it, make a backup of it first.

Ill try that then, thanks! The stock messaging app seems to be open in the background a lot.

I had always heard that handcent needs the stock messaging - that hand cent is more of a ui not a service.
I'd love to yank the stock one if it's not necessary.
No you don't need the stock messanger for handcent to work. Both the wifes phone and mine are running handcent only. As mentioned above though use Titanium or Root Uninstaller Pro to back up the app first just in case. I've unistalled it a fair number of times thanks to my Rom'itus and never had an issue though!

Yes I was using handcent for some time, every time I flashed a rom I would uninstall mms.apk with titanium and get handcent, it works just fine.
Although, from what I understand you cannot receive mms with handcent on sprint, never tried having both stock and handcent to see if u receive that way
Sent from my SPH-D700
Thanks guys! Yeah I just pulled the stock one , and it works just fine, but I would recommend freezing or backing up.
*edit* oh and btw I think you can remove mms.apk since thi app gives you the option of handling both sms and mms.

Edit: DO NOT selct the retrieve automatically setting under handcent settings. It will overide the voicemail and you will only reciecve voicemail notifacations through sms/mms.

So the new Facebook Messenger can integrate SMS messaging with the Galaxy S3. However, it does not work for me. I thought about and 1 possible reason is that I replaced the Touchwiz MMS app with the stock ICS app. But this shouldn't affect it right? Since the app is just a front-end?
When I click a message icon and choose Messenger, it just opens the app and nothing happens. When I receive an SMS, it does not show up in the FB Messenger app. If I try to send a message to a cell # in FB Messenger, it does not work.
If it is affecting it, how can I get the Touchwiz MMS app so that I can integrate my SMS with FB Messenger? Thanks.
Reflash a Touchwiz ROM

I'm wondering this too. I'm using stock and can't get integration.

I believe it's not just front-end. Back in the amaze 4g forums, only certain mms.apk files would work with mms regardless of anything you did or even trying mms with third party apps like go sms.
Basically, make a backup, try flashing the original mms apk and try it out.

Where do I get the touch wiz MMS app to flash?
Can't promise it'll work 100%, I didn't test it, but here, try this, I haven't made a flashable file in ages: http://www.mediafire.com/?kwpz604swt04o0w (SGH-T999_stockMMS.zip)
Wait.. I see you have CM10 installed on your siggy, not sure this will work.
I have stock T999UVLH2. The only evidence of SMS support is that Messenger opens when I click on Text icon, but it doesn't actually do anything.
Are there any settings I'm missing?

Flashed this thanks, got the default TW messaging app back with its motion and notifications but my FB Messenger app still does not show an integration option. Anyone know how to fix?
Thanks.
Similar Problem
I'm having a similar problem with my ATT GS3 running CM10.1 nightlies. It was working fine under CM10.

Do you really think FaceBook would bother reading anyones SMS?
Having SMS and FaceBook messenger in one app is handy as all hell.

Does anyone have a way to get this to work now that the new FB Messenger doesn't support SMS?
Thanks!
Ok, so rather than flash again to CM10.1 or whatever, I've decided I would like to disable the conversion of <3 into that one with the Android with hearts for Eyes, and likewise for all other Emoji.
Is this possible without massive effort, or should I switch to another MMS application. I'm not opposed to plan B. Handcent and Chomp are my two candidates.
However I wanna know if this is something that is built into the keyboard first, since if thats the case almost all my apps will display them in place of plaintext ones.
I am also open to modifying font packages if I need to.

Yeah, I just tried to fiddle and replace the emojis in the fonts and ****, with a backup beforehand of course. They showed up as squares, so I said screw it and installed GO SMS Pro. Oddly all of the issues I was having before such as Contact Pictures and whatnot, arent occuring, and on deodexed its oddly pretty fast.
I am still having the issue with GO Contacts EX Not grouping contacts by contacts (Like I have configured in google), but at least GO SMS Pro works now!
Heck I can even only have it display mobile contacts.
Oh hey look I accidentally....a bad word XP.
I recently converted back to Android with the M8 (went from OG Droid to iPhone 4S and now back again) and I'm just looking at the huge amount of apps HTC includes. Does anyone prefer the stock app to other Google Play options?
Also, would anyone recommend the HTC Backup? I looked at it, but I have no experience with it; I do know it's better than Verizon's "cloud" though!
If Google has an alternarive, I'll use it. They're a better software company.

Starting with Kitkat, message store is central and handled by the OS, not the individual apps ... thats why you can only have one single app for messaging enabled at any one time in 4.4

I'd recommend SMS backup and Restore. It's what i've been using since as long as I can remember.
Got my 360 yesterday and I'm loving it. I discovered that the Chomp SMS notifications don't get sent to the phone. Chomp does its notifications differently so I need to test the others, but I thought I'd ask. What do you use, and is it wear compatible?
I know Hangouts is compatible, so we can build a list of known good apps.
edit: Chomp tweeted at me and said it is compatible since version 6.21, but I couldn't make it work on mine. Might be missing a setting. Another user confirmed it worked on his phone/watch.
Wear Compatible (can reply from watch)
Hangouts
Textra
Evolve SMS
Go SMS Pro (able to pull up older messages from watch)
Handcent SMS
Chomp SMS (might require special settings)
I use Textra. It works great.

Doesn't have s specific app for wear but the notifications are passed through and the notifications allow you to respond directly from the watch.

Ok. I was reading about someone not being able to reply from a stock app on a Galaxy S5 I believe, so I'm not exactly sure what the app has to have to allow replying from the watch. Thanks for the report.
It has to have the ability to respond in the notification bar on thr phone I think....without opening the app....

EVOLVE SMS WORKS LIKE A CHARM ALSO.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
Go SMS Pro is compatible with the Wear. It's the only way I know of that you can actually read through your existing (old) text messages and send a text from there. You just have to pin the messages from a particular contact to the top on the phone.
I found it odd that with the stock messaging app you can't simply read through your texts, but Go SMS Pro has figured out a way...

Wow, Textra is amazing! Thanks for this. The whole layout is solid, it works well with Light Manager and Nova Launcher Counter. You can reply, mark as read, and call. Seriously, that's better than stock sms and hangouts.
Is there any app which allows you to delete sms from wear? Hangouts does not allow that. I get a lot of SPAM messages and this would be really helpful.
I like Handsent SMS which also pushes to the wear. It is infinitely customizable.

I also want to thank you for bringing it up. I like it a lot. I love Hello SMS but it keeps having issues with MMS on T-Mobile. They update it often, but the latest versions I used started having a big bug that would crash the whole SMS system and I would have to reboot. The last version I tried to use was forcing me to sign up for a free SMS before I could use the app. That was the last straw.

Apparently it is compatible since version 3.6 I believe, but it didn't work on mine. Maybe I missed a setting? I'll update the OP. I'm using Textra now, so I'm not inclined to look into making Chomp work (at least as of now).

I love Textra and have been a long-time user BUT the one gripe I have about Textra & the Moto 360 is that when you mute notifications on the phone, you don't get the vibration from the text messages via Textra. You have the have the phone set on vibrate... I mean it's a small thing but I really do hope they change this.
Ok, I tried a bunch of them now and I think the only one which allows you to reply back from the watch directly is the SMS Go pro. It allows you to select reply and opens voice to compose txt and sends it, all on the Moto360. The others send you the notification to the watch, but then give you an option to open it on the phone to reply.
