[Fixed] Soft Bricked SPH-L710 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Team,
I have been researching for hours and am quite confused on which avenue to take to recover my soft brick. Information overload:crying:
Here is what happened and I will provide as much info as I can so please bare with me. After OTA upgrading to 4.3 and rooting successfully using the CF Auto Root. I was attempting to get my wifi hotspot working again using the Wifi mod and mucked around and installed the wrong mod (Odexed MK4). This rendered me stuck at the glowing samsung screen and it goes no further. Ive tried to factory reset, wiped cache and rebooted several times. Boots fine into recovery and download mode.
So after hours of searching, reading (its 3:50am est) and testing solutions I am no closer to a fix than I was when I started. I am currently waiting on a stock rooted rom to download in an attempt to flash back to stock but its taking hours to download.
However I just noticed, as I am typing this thread, that I can no longer
1. Mount as an usb external drive in recovery (TWRP v 2.3.1.0) I have Samsung drivers installed (1.5.14.0) so I get the indicator sound from windows that I sees the phone.
2. If I attempt to manually browse through my files using the recovery there are no files inside my internal sdcard directories.
/sdcard There are three directories there
/0 /obb /TWRP and the only folder that has files inside is the TWRP folder.
Im floundering here. I cannot even mount and install files on the phone to even attempt to flash back to stock. Can I get some fresh angles ladies and gents? I am at a loss.

Good morning (not really, I assume, sorry). So where are you at? Not sure what you mean that you cannot install files on the phone... Can you get into download mode and your computer recognizes the phone? If yes, can you do what you started to say - odin stock rooted? Or... if you can get into a custom recovery but your internal sd card has been wiped, can you put a stock rooted ROM in zip format on an external sd card, put that sd card into your phone, and flash in custom recovery?

Here is the problem...the ROM I have is in zip format and based on what I have been reading I cannot install via Odin. Due to the fact that the phone refuses to mount as an external storage device I have no way of placing data on the the internal or external card. The only recourse I have now it to attempt to find an adapter to be able to mount this microsd card to my PC. I am out of town and have no idea where I could find one.....uggggh. Ill keep you posted.

Walmart. .. target. ... and most any office store you should be able to find one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538543 ... This thread gives you the stock unrooted rom in a flashable zip. To my knowledge no one has put out a stock rooted zip, but I will check around.

You always have the Factory Reset/Wipe Data option inside your Recovery. But if that doesnt work use your downoad mode and Reset in KIES. but whatever you do, now that you have upgraded to 4.3 DO NOT try and dowgrade. it will cause a hard brick.

You did the ota update which put KNOX on your phone which is bad especially if you have a warranty. There is currently no way to get rid of it. I read a while ago the peoples phones has been getting bricked because they were trying stuff.
Anyway the only option I guess you have is to use your computer and reset your phone using kies. It will flash your phone back to stock in download mode.

Ok team here is the latest
I was able to grab an adapter for my micro and I attempted to install the stock rom posted above located here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538543
That was a no-go and gave me the following error during installation.

at this point I am still able to get into Recovery and Download. I really hosed this **** up

Here is the stock tar thread....You can use this to Odin back to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565972
Good luck!

Thanks bro.....Ill download it and give it a try. I have nothing to lose at this point. Ill be back with praise or tears.

Problem resolved I was able to go back to stock using the link posted above by Bigpappa!!!
Thank you all so much for you help!

Congratulations
I am glad you were able to get use of your phone back. I wish I had seen this thread sooner. I was in exactly the same boat a couple of weeks ago, only mine lasted 3 days. I even bought a new GS4 when I thought my phone was dead. Took it back when someone finally helped me do what you did. It's a helpless feeling when you have been rooting and Romming for years safely. Sure seems like a sticky thread is in order for this specific issue. As you can see, I haven't got enough history for credibility on this forum since I rarely post. Oh well.

[Q] Can't place TeamEpic-Root Zip on internal storage

So, this is a seemingly easy problem, but I can' seem to find a fix for it. Let me start at the beginning.
I started the root process and went into download mode, but realize I was using the old method/files by accident. I exited download mode plugged got internal storage up again and deleted the old clock work .zip.
I downloaded the Sprint GS3 Root kit TWRP and brought internal storage up again, and tried to place the TeamEpicRoot.zip on my phone but it shows a red circle with a line through it. So I tried copy/pasting ... but once I go into the phone storage it doesn't give me an option to paste.
Did I mess something up when I put the wrong zip on? I never downloaded or flashed anything. Just went into download mode, then exited it.
Drivers are installed and USB debugging is allowed. I'm lost.
I would suggest trying mskip's toolkit- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680 easy to use, and has stock and custom recoveries. It's pretty automated, just make sure you pick Sprint version, as toolkit is for 14 variants of the GS3.

[Q] (solved) uninstalled OS, unable to connect to computer

I hate to be that guy, but i have tried searching the forums and have had no luck...
Basically while flashing CM10 I screwed up and installed the wrong Gapps pack (never trusting goo manager again)
I got stuck in an endless boot cycle (saying 'installer has stopped' on boot, not allowing any actions)
I did a wipe before attempting to restore... and then my backup was gone.
So now I'm stuck with either attempting to restore to stock (which I'm ok with, I think this is not really my game) or going to a custom rom.
But right now I have no OS installed and my computer will not recognize the device. I have tried kies, installing / reinstalling sammy drivers, and i still can't get anything to appear except for a cd drive.
I have tried on windows xp pro, xp media edition, windows 7 home, same result.
I can still boot into download mode and recovery (i have TWRP as my recovery)
but again, i somehow wiped my backup, i can't get my computer to recognize i have a phone, and i don't have access to an SD card port.
If I get an micro sd card reader, would that give me the ability to copy the rom zip file?
I would really appreciate any advice anyone can give me.
Help! is there any way to fix my phone?
EDIT: MY PROBLEM WAS I had just recently installed a 64gb microsd card, and it was not formatted correctly... ended up getting the correct version of Gapps and a stable version of cyanogenmod (10.1) and installing them onto my girlfriends SD card (which was only 32gb and formatted correctly). I went to walmart and got a SD card to USB adapter for $8, loaded the zips onto that, and flashed them very quickly and easily through TWRP.
Not sure if it makes a difference but I flashed CM FIRST by itself, then after that booted up all nice and happy I went back and flashed Gapps (because without google what are you supposed to do? use it as a phone!? )
and everything installed perfectly and without a hitch.
Thanks for the quick help everyone!

Your not bricked at all, you just have no os.
In twrp make sure your looking at the external sd card foe your backup. And yes if you can get a micro sd card reader/adapter, you should be able to copy a rom file to it.

Re: [Q] soft bricked, but not able to connect to computer
You could also just put the sdcard in another phone and access it on your computer through THAT one
But yeah, as said above, you just have no OS.

Thanks guys. I ended up using an SD card adapter, and loading the zip onto that.
Feel kinda silly for not thinking of that before.
Finally got CyanogenMod to load though!I tried it before only to get that installer has stopped error.

Help on the way
THERE IS 2 WAYS TO FIX IT.
1. POWER OFF THE DEVICE ONCE IT IS POWERED OFF FULLY HOLD THE BACK BUTTON WHILE HOLDING IT PLUG IN USB CABLE AND FLASH DOOMKERNAL AND THEN I RECOMMEND YOU SHOULD PUT DONUT HD ON THE SD CARD THEN. UNPLUG USB AND THEN POWER ON DEVICE ONCE YOU FEEL IT VIBRATE RAPIDLY PRESS BACK BUTTON YOU SHOULD BE ON CWM THEN INSTALL ROM AND YOUR SET.
2.DOWNLOAD Sony PC Companion AND THEN CONNECT PHONE THEN GO ON REPAIR PHONE AND IT WILL TELL YOU THE REST.
NOTE: DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL NO MORE CM IT HAPPENED TO ME ONCE THE WHOLE PHONE DIDN'T WORK GOT STUCK ON BOOTCYCLE
ANOTHER NOTE: IF WIFI DOSEN'T WORK JUST DOWNLOAD WIFI MODULS HERE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253853 JUST SCROLL DOWN UNTIL IT LOOKS LIKES YOU FIND THE WORD NEW.
OVERCLOCK MAY NOT WORK. RECOMMENDED IS NOT CLOCKED.
3.I RECOMMEND REPAIR IT WITH SONY PC Companion THEN ROOT IT AFTER ROOT JUST PUT CWM AND THEN PUT DOOMKERNAL AFTER THAT FLASH DOOMKERNAL THEN GO INTO CWM AND THEN PUT DONUT HD INSIDE AND YOUR SET.
RESOURCES
DONUT HD http://minus.com/mcB539HOP

[Q] Stuck ...

I have a new T-Mobile Note 2. I installed TWRP and SuperSU using the toolkit. I then used Root Browser and deleted a bunch of apps ("bloatware", I thought), and apparently removed too much, as the phone no longer boots android.
I downloaded the two Tweaked 2.4.1 Rom files, checked Md5sums, OK, and coped same to external SD card. I did the recommended wipes using TWRP. Thereafter, also using TWRP, BasicInstall finishes with success, but the Tweaked.2.4.1.UVBMD1.073113.zip install fails with "E: Unable to open zip file". Then I try to reboot, and get a message "your phone does not appear to be rooted", and take the option "Install SuperSU? That also fails.
I think maybe I can't install Tweaked.2.4.1.UVBMD1.073113.zip because the phone isn''t rooted? Is that right? But I can't figure out how to root the phone either. I'm stuck in a loop. Recommendations to fix appreciated.
Thx, Gus

If you got an unable to open zip file error - even though the md5s check out the only thing I can think of is the zip has become corrupted somehow. Did you check the md5 on a computer and move the file over? Might be worth checking it on the phone (you can use the terminal interface in twrp fwiw - just use the md5sum command).
Bottom line recommendation - try to copy the full zip over to the sdcard again. Also, just to sate my curiosity - did you wipe /system before flashing?

I did recopy the two Tweaked .zip files to the sdcart - repeated attempt to install on phone, same problems.
I also unzipped the two Tweaked files on linux, and although I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to see, there's no errors and a bunch of directories and files that generally look reasonable
I think I did wipe /system on the phone before flashing - could that be my problem? Also, when I go into terminal mode in TWRP on the phone, I get a hang at "Updating partition details"
Is it possible I've accidentally deleted the unzip program on the phone?
Is there stuff I could/should do from an adb shell on my PC through a USB hookup to the phone?
thx, Gus
You could flash stock rom with odin and start over.

Hmm... maybe reflash recovery? That's very strange - especially if the first zip worked fine and the second had the issues...

Finally got it working. dwitherell was more or less right about the problem. Here's my steps: 1) did a low-level format on the external sda card 2) recopied the two Tweaked zip files onto the external sda card 3) Cheked md5sums for both files on the external sda card 4) ainstalled from TWRP, as before. BUT - this time it worked.
I'm guessing either the external sda card or one of the zip files was corrupted - as dwitherell had suggested. Thanks to him and other forum members for helping out.

[Q] Soft Brick, can't transfer files

My phone is the Virgin Mobile edition of the Epic 4G Touch, with the GB28 Jelly Bean stock rooted Rom.
I was in the process of installing Cyanogenmod 11 via the instructions listed at the bottom of this page. I've done hours and hours of research over several days to make sure of the process. However, I did the noobiest of noob things. I committed an error that even the dumbest of the dumb wouldn't have done.
I forgot to copy the files to the SD card before flashing the EL26 Kernel.
Mock me. I will understand. I've been circling my room cursing out loud at my amazing stupidity and oversight. Nonetheless, I need your help. My current situation has me at a mismatched Kernel and Rom which, of course, won't boot.
Solution 1 [Failed]:
Flash back to the stock GB28 Kernel. I tried the One-Click off of rwilco12's repository, but I get an md5 sum mismatch error. I've downloaded the file multiple times, but it appears to be corrupted.
Solution 2 [Failed]:
Boot into the EL26 CWM recovery (which is successful!), then try mounting /data or /sdcard. Neither works, and my laptop will not recognize that an SD Card is connected.
Solution 3 [Failed]:
Plug SD Card into the printer (with a mirco SD card adapter), then use the printer to transfer files. Problem is, my printer is out of black ink, and I can't do anything without that ink cartridge. That's right, I can't read the SD Card without replacing the ink cartridge. Go f*** yourself Kodak.
And so, with a phone that cannot boot properly I need to transfer files to my SD card. I've read something about ADB, but I don't quite understand how it works. Is there a specific version of ADB I need to download? If so, where could I find it? Is there any other way to get the files onto my SD card so I can complete the process of upgrading to CM11?

Try this if you can get into download mode. Install Odin on your laptop. Download the stock rooted restore for VMobile(GB28), tar version. Flash through pc Odin. Once you boot back up you should be able to copy the files you need top your sd card.
Since it appears all the download links for the VM recovery kernel are dead, you can use the GB27 kernel for the Sprint version. It won't cause any issues. To avoid the yellow triangle, flash the kernel through Mobile Odin. You can find Mobile Odin in the play store. Or, if you don't mind the yellow triangle warning on boot, you can flash the GB27 kernel with pc Odin. Once you have the recovery kernel flashed, you can reboot into recovery and continue your flashing.
By the way, you'll need to flash the Blasphemy kernel to get the proper recovery to flash any of the 4.4.2 roms. If you get the latest 4,.42 blasphemy kernel zip file, you can flash directly from the GB27 kernel recovery I linked. Then reboot into recovery, wipe and flash cm11 and gapps.

Just glad I could help. I've been in those types of situations before. Most of what I've learned about android has come from trial and error. The rest of it has been from the helpful people here and other forums, usually after one of those errors. We all learn from each other, and try to give back when we can.
If you or anybody needs it, here is the GB28 kernel with CWM recovery. I hope nobody has any issues with my posting it as all the old download links are broken.

Thanks for the link! I've sent a message to rwilco12 to see if he'd like to add that to his repository. Whether or not he does, it's helpful to have that link for anyone searching the forums later. Thanks for taking the time to help and post.

Note 2 Stock: Phone won't boot properly /data issues

Hello,
Happy Christmas Eve all,
I'm having a nightmare of a time with my Note 2. It was installing an app update from the play store earlier and I noticed the phone had powered off (assumed battery had died).
On powering up the phone after the Samsung boot screen I'm presented with the set up screen and continuous pop ups informing me system processes have crashed although phone was fully set up before the issue.
I then tried to enter stock recovery and saw a message regarding error when trying to mount /data.
Rather stupidly I have no backup of the internal data which includes a lot of holiday photos I'd like to save.
My question is are there any means I could use to try and recover the data?
I can enter stock recovery and download mode which I'm hoping will improve my chances.
Also when hooked up to the PC, Kies doesn't recognise the device and tells me to use Smart Switch, also when the PC did eventually reognise the phone it showed internal storage as 107mb with 0 free and shows no folders or files within.
Has anyone come across this before or have any advice on how I can try and recover my data?
Many thanks,
Galaxydude1

I can enter stock recovery and download mode which I'm hoping will improve my chances.
Also when hooked up to the PC, Kies doesn't recognise the device and tells me to use Smart Switch, also when the PC did eventually reognise the phone it showed internal storage as 107mb with 0 free and shows no folders or files within.
Has anyone come across this before or have any advice on how I can try and recover my data?
Many thanks,

Thanks for the reply yaro,
The phone was completely stock so no custom recovery installed. Do you know if there is anyway for me to recover the photos that were on the /data partition?
I've seen a few posts for other devices mentioning reflashing certain files via Odin to then allow recovery of files in /data but nothing definitive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
