I am definitely not a noob here but, it has been a loooong time. From the HD2 and g2x days including a stint with Team Hellfire. I just tried to get back in to the scene with the purchase of a tmous galaxy s4 (4.3) and am realizing that I may not be able to root. That being said, I have read that you can and that you can't. What is the definitive answer? can I root this paperweight or not?
I'm not too familiar with the s4 but I know with 4.3 on an HTC one you can't root yet.
Check your software build number and boot version and then search on those numbers. Most 4.3 phones right now can't root unless you were previously s off and just took the ota. Then all you had to do was reinstall superuser.

You can root, use custom recovery, flash other ROMs, etc but you will trip the (as of right now) KNOX warranty flag. If you care about your warranty, leave it stock and don't muck around. If the warranty doesn't really matter to you, having a tripped KNOX flag doesn't incapacitate your device or anything; just don't expect warranty agreements to be honored.
Cf auto root

I was deciding between s4 and HTC one. How do you like yours? I don't think I'm a big fan of touch wiz. I hope Verizon does not take away my unlimited data because all I've had were Verizon HTC phones.
If I had to switch carriers I would probably keep my DNA as it has bands that work on pretty much all carriers except sprint.

So far it is nicely put together and it has a ton of features. Not really happy with the lock down from Samsung though. First is was a lack of source release from LG and now Samsung has to play games
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah they did pack a lot of features in the s4. What they should have done was made the build quality better, it's not as plasticy feeling as the s3 but they should have of course got rid of the home button.
I heard Knox is a pain but at least you can root it now. I can't even use my one right now because I hate the Verizon software.

Thanks for the the sight on the nexus. But in your opinion which is the better phone for medium user. Surfing the web, text, YouTube and email. Battery life means a lot can't get around a charge for most of the day.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
for a medium user... battery life is best.. so s3
Never used a nexus, so i couldn't objectively compare battery life. But i get moderate to good use daily from my s3. For example, today I've got almost 5hrs if screen time, but a lot of that is on wifi, only a small amount of mobiledata and an hour and a half phone of calls
SIII
SIII is better IMO. my GF have the Nexus and it is a great phone, but to me the SIII is more phone.
I am just unsure my wife has a galaxy note and when I was comparing my s3 opens apps faster but when I hit the home button hers is fast at getting back to the home screen. Could there be something wrong with my s3?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I'd say keep your SIII. The hardware is more powerful plus like paniro already mentioned you can root it and install cm10 or AOKP on it and you have stock android but with the more powerful hardware. Plus if you ever want to go back to stock Touchwiz you can still do so.

that is because it's waiting for a second press to initiate s voice, it's totally normal. You use to be able to fix this by disabling s voice but I don't think it works anymore (don't quote me on that). there are apps that allow you to re map keys and I think this circumvents the lag "issue" but it doesn't bother me so I never tried it.
Op- keep the s3, the only thing nexus had going for it is jb... which we unofficially have now.

I have been asked by people as to WHY would you want to root your phone? Or the big question...what is rooting?
So this is what I tell them when one of these questions is asked.
Lets say you bought a brand new Mustang Gt. You paid for it and it belongs to you. But you notice that Ford has only certain options available to you and all the others are locked down. But this is YOUR car. But the PCM is locked down and your stuck with the options Ford wants you to have.
But...help is here. You find out that your PCM can be unlocked (rooted) so you can have access to your cars full potential.
Your brand new phone is just like the Mustang until you unlock its full potential.
So I ask you...root or not to root?
Sent from my Wicked T999
Definitely root for me, but its not for everyone

That is true. But once they see what rooting their phone does for them they would be very happy.
I rooted mine the day I bought it and have no intention of going stock.

For me it's not a huge deal since I don't play games on my phone so I don't really need the extra speed. I just like my phone feeling snappier when using the basic apps like texting. I'm also very minimalistic so it's nice to be able to get rid of the bloat

I wouldn't know what happens if you're going through T-Mobile but I assume you'll be fine if you're polite and explain you don't know what's going on, insist you've been with T-Mobile because of their excellent support if they make a big deal about it. Asurion the insurance company working with T-Mobile will take it anyways because they just fix it and that's it and resell it. And because you pay a monthly bill they're making money off of you regardless and you still have to pay a deductible.
But you SHOULD really return to stock.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4
If they see that the phone is rooted, they'll just simply do nothing for you. That's why people say "your warranty is now void".
Do what is mentioned above or take your chances and hope the T-Mobile rep that is assisting you doesn't check to see if the phone is rooted or check the flash counter.

Oh, simple enough then! Just go to SuperSU and unroot.
You could even try to temp unroot if you think that's all you'd need to do to hide it.
Befire you unroot though, do you have a custom recovery or kernel installed? If not, then run triangle away, then unroot. If you do, reflash root66, then use TA and unroot.

I like the features I get with my stock build, but I'm considering a root for better control over my apps, (Greenify, permission control) so this thread seems like a relevant question.
Is Triangle Away and unrooting all it takes to make it appear that I haven't done anything?
The warranty issue is the only thing stopping me, it's saved me a bunch in the past...

I rooted my phone once, but I will never do it again after what happened. Last year I rooted my GS3 and about a week later, my local T-Mobile store called my phone unexpectedly. The guy on the other end told me I was due for a price drop, but I would have to come into the T-Mobile store to sign the paperwork before it would take effect. 2 days later I stopped in to get the discount on my monthly payment. The T-Mobile employee said he would have to look at my phone just to verify that it was the correct serial number. He went into the back room and said he would be back in a few minutes. 10 minutes later, a police officer walks in the store and asks my name. I'm totally freaked out wondering what the deal is. He asks me to turn around a puts hand cuffs on me. The officer told me I was under arrested and being charged with "rooting a mobile device". I was booked and released, but I would watch what you do to your phone. Good luck.

Rooting a device isn't illegal. They can kiss my ring. Think about it, if it was illegal why are root apps allowed on Google Play? And also, why is XDA not been shut down?
Methinks something else happened there. Maybe you voided their warranty and tried getting a discount which may be against the rules. Or something. But I know for a fact this is legal. Unlocking is a different story however.
So my advice, root on my brothers it's the only damn freedom we have left here in America.

Can't u just unlock it with apps like galaxysim unlock?
also there are many posts about unlocking your phone on the forums u can DIY at home with just a couple of softwares and apps, all u need is to type unlock note 2 in search and follow the procedure under u're respective model number's forum
as for site I ain't so sure as I just use galaxysim unlock and i'm rooted but I don't think it needs root to be installed.Just await confirmation on that part from one of the others members and see what they suggest

Being that we are all GS4 users most likely we will recommend another S4. This phone is easy to root and manage as long as you read and ask questions before you start flashing.

If it was me I'd get another s4 or an s5.
The only tricky bit is there is no development for the s5.
One would consider stuff like the new HTC phones (m8, etc), but they just aren't on the same level as the Samsung flagships.
I'm in a similar boat. My sweetie has my old Hercules. I'd like to give her my s4 and get an s5, but it would be a downgrade. No insane kit kat. No wicked. No cyanogen.
Can't do it.
So if my phone broke I'd get another s4.
