Hey all,
I am looking for a case that offers near max-protect for the Nexus 5. I've got a one year old who loves our phones, and he'll occasionally throw phones down the stairs from a high balcony and what not.
I have the Otterbox Defender for my HTC One, and I like how it's multi-layered, with a full screen protector that is attached to the third layer of protection, as well as an outer shell that acts as the first layer of protection. Nothing of the phone is exposed except for the cuts outs that leave room for the speakers and ports.
I am looking for similar protection for the Nexus 5. Don't know where to start (except here) since it seems this monster phone isn't supported by retailers like Otterbox.
Ballistic SG Maxx. Great protection. I'd say better than Otterbox.

Thanks. Checking it out now but can't tell if the entire screen is behind the screen protector. By screen protector, I don't mean a sheet you lay over the screen to protect it from scratches, I mean a protector that guarantees the screen never touches anything when laid face down, irrespective or raised corners (which I don't want to depend on).
Its got a built in screen protector. One of the pictures shows the different layers. I believe that's the difference between the SG and SG Maxx

I have the SG maxx.
Its a great case but the screen protector is not mounted to the actual case. Its a layer that goes with the silicon part....it is rugged anti glare plastic tho and cover 98% of the screen

thanks. Would you trust it to protect the phone if someone with the strength of a toddler were to throw it down hard on the floor, including hard surfaces?
My 1 year old throws mine around and it protects very well... But I am getting a regular screen protector that covers the entire screen to go under the SG maxx plastic screen protector
Also the holster that comes with the SG maxx is very good
I found mine on amazon for about 35$ with shipping
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Xparent Red Tapatalk 2
Wouldn't that ruin the responsiveness with two screen protectors? Also, what protector would you get? I think I'll just get the MAXX for a case.
I do some high end custom electrical stuff with a lot of metals that I have to drill and grind and weld so it will only be during work when I have the plastic protector on..so if touch isn't 100% it won't bother me to much...its more for extra protection.
Im using a standard static cling screen protector

Man,
I must be lucky. My daughter never threw my phone down the hall or stairs..lol.. she actually is very careful with it. The only phone that broke for me was the galaxy nexus and that was my fault..
You could probably look at:

And the Ballistic case mentioned before is very good as well.
Am I the only one around here that doesn't let their toddler play with my phone?

apparently seidio is releasing the CONVERT very soon. it looks like this will be the most protective case for the N5 when it is released. check out the nexus 4 version for an idea of what it will look like:
however, no built in screen protector.

I have used those before and the case will make your phone last like cockroaches and Twinkies after a nuclear war. It's big and heavy, but they protect very well. I have the Ballistic SG Maxxx on mine right now and it should work fine for me with maybe half the weight. (I work outdoors part of the time so I NEED a protective case). If you really want maximum protection you can't really go wrong with either.
I bought the i-Blason Armorbox (has a built in screen protector) for exactly the same reason... well 20 months... but same idea. I like it quite a bit.
I don't think the bulk of the protection unless you need it for work is worth it for your child to play with it. I have 3 kids; 6, 4 and 2. If they want to play with a phone they get an old phone (like my G1) not my brand new expensive one. Specially if they are going to throw it around.

Ok so i just bought the ballistic maxx case from the at&t store for $50. I walk out to my car to put it on and quickly find out the case is a piece of $h!t. I dont know where to start but ill try. 1st its nothin lime the ballistic HC case i owned for other phones and absolutely loved. All it is is a ballstic sg case with this redicilous removable screen protector. Itd a hard plastic piece that you put on the phone after you slide the rubber gel on the phone. The plastic is hard to put on. I can see eventually scratching the phone trying to do this snd when you do get it on its lose as hell. It sits off the phone so far theres a gap in between it and the screen. When you press it it clicks against phone. The lip on the case is so big you have to curl your thumb to hit home screen. And ballistic has the balls to charge $50 for that piece of crap. This is one of the worst cases i have ever seen. I immediately took it back and got my refund. If you need a rugged case wait for the defender. That case is junk. If you dropped it in water the water would poor right through the cheap screen protector. Also theres no protection for camera. I took a few pics before returning.

I checked it out at a AT&T as well and I have to agree...I thought it was garbage.
I dont understand what it is there trying to do. There HC cases were very good cases. Fit both my evos very good. Ballistics only downfall to me was customer service and they were normally late to the game. This case is just an embarassment to ballisctic. Very cheap not well cut and just dosent go well with the phone

I hate bulky cases on slim phones anyway.
I got the case and I don't see why you guys are giving it such a bad rap. I bought it for when I go over to the desert for the extra protection and it should work just fine. I actually liked the look and feel better than other otterbox cases. Personal preference I guess.
I have the normal Ballistic SG coming from amazon tuesday or wednesday so I'm hoping it winds up being a nice case. if not ill probably check out the trident ageis or casemate tough
Thats too bad, it looks pretty cool
The main thing is that whole removable screen protector. That wws just a dumb idea

I had the same issue! It would bubble up after installing the screen protector. The case is JUNK. That is a fact.
No disrespect meant at all....but I completely disagree with the OP. I have this case and have grown to really like it. OP mentioned the screen protector having a gap between it and screen....it does not if installed correctly. Instructions clearly state to place screen protecter on phone BEFORE applying gel case. There is a lip around the screen prot/gel case that locks it into place (which also greatly aids in keeping water out....not saying go drop it in the washer and walk away but you get what I mean). then the polycarb shell fits perfectly....it's all a tight fit and imo looks good. i added pics of mine installed in another thread(can't remember where at the moment). Anyway, I wrote this reply to let people know it's not a bad case....actually had an otterbox defender on my previous phone and it became stretched out and ugly as hell. this case won't do that bc of the outter poly carb shell and how the gel shell is locked on the screen protector. Just saying don't dismiss this case on one or two bad reviews. It's a great case if installed correctly. I even ordered the Ballistic SG in a different color combo to switch things up since i already have the screen protector and holster. I would NOT have ordered a second if it was crap!!

You also said in that thread that your not using the screen protector. I would imagine its bc of the lack of clarity or something else? Why pay $50 for a rugged case if you dont have the built in screen protector? They need to bring back the HC series. And when the defender is released youll see how making a 3 layer rugged case look smooth and fluid isnt that hard

You are correct. When I posted that I wasn't using the sp. I liked it then. Now I have it on and like other just the same. Its still very responsive and clear. NO gap between screen and sp at all. I have used an ob defender....smooth and fluid are not words I would use to describe it. I liked it bc I could bounce it off of cement with no ill effects but it was hello ugly imo. To r each his own I guess. Just wanted everyone to see how the sgmaxx preformed when installed correctly.

In your pictures it dose look like a nice fit. I tryd puttin the screen protector on before putting silicone on and after and it just was hidious. Also watchin the video review on youtube people really didnt have anything good to say. I just like the HC case and tje Defender because it gives you the feeling the phone is sealed tight and well protected. Ballstic sg maxx to me isnt really any different then a seidio rugged combo case. Layer after layer but no real screen protection

Bought a clone from ebay. $5. Hasn't arrived yet. I still think the Kraken will be the one to beat.
I have a commuter now and i really like this case. I normally hlget defenders but must admit after a while between the dirt that gets under the screen protector and stuff it gets annoying. I have the visor screen protector now and really like the slim case.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
The case isn't horrible but it is (at least for me) difficult to hit the buttons at the bottom of the screen. The removable protector is not a "bad" idea but if they had a better fitting screen protector I think it would be better for us users. Having the option to replace it is nice but you don't have the option to have the screen face out while in the holster. I saw that seidio has the surface case so I might return this case and buy that. I really wish they would make a waterproof otterbox case which might happen because FINALLY Samsung has a device that is the same shape for all the carriers!
Usually with the Otterbox cases I pop out the built in protector and put one on the screen directly. I had an iPhone 4 that got chips in the glass because of little particles getting in between the glass and the built in screen protector.

I have the same case and I like it. It was not too difficult to put on for me. As for the screen protector, I also have it off and like that it is not like the Otterbox. Why do that on a $50 case? Its the same reason I rip the display cover off the Otterbox Defender series. Because I don't like them. If I ever start scratching my display maybe I will install the removable display cover since it can go on and off. But I get these cases not for the screen protector but for those rare times I drop my device. And for that I am fine with it.
I've never had a case or screen protector for my Galaxy Nexus, and at this point I don't plan to. Was wondering if anyone else takes the risk of going case-less and has it bitten you in the ass ever?

Otterbox Commuter, like I use on my Atrix 4G and Nokia N900. I never use the screen protectors provided with the case. The Defender line offers great protection against drops and allows you to place the phone face down to avoid dropping spoons thru the screen (ou still need to cover the camera opening if you really want to be safe). And yes, this makes the phone weigh twice as much but I perfer the weight to the sound of shattering glass or cracked plastic.
I run nudist. Only way to go. I carry it in a Spigen leather case for travel between work, but it has a nice little draw string to pop it out, and there she is with nothing on! *gasp*
I've never owned a case for any of my top of the line smartphones.
Always naked.
Anyway, these new phones are WAY too big to put a case on. They do fine in my pocket but add a case and it's just too big for me.
I used to use screen protectors but I despise those now too.
I always go with the cased option so i don't have problem selling my phones if i want to upgrade to a newer models
Using zagg screen protector and Gella skin. But I don't like the resistance on the zagg.

Excellent! I no longer feel alone in my case-less preference. There at so many case threads I thought I might be the only one. With the Galaxy Nexus specifically, the glass is so nice to touch a screen protector would eliminate half the reason I use a gnex in the first place.

I always have on a screen protector cause I would be heartbroken if there was a permanent scratch. Go for the better ones with good optics.
As for a case- the phone is so light and thin and slippery to hold I like something on it to give me a better grip. I went thru 3 types before finding the really thin one with no top or bottom- just protects the sides and back. Not quite dropworthy, but I carry it in my wallet so it has a double protection when on the go. It has a nice slide pocket that it goes into with the screen to the leather.
I also like to sell my old phones to support my habit!!!! Did very well with my Infuse and Iphone3gs to buy this one.
Good point. I do, in fact, sit in an office all day.

Hello,
ordered my S3 couple days ago. It haven't arrived yet, but...
I was using my HTC Desire S for two years. It dropped once from pocket height (due to loose pouch) and nothing happened.
I love the feeling of naked phone. No screen protector nor cases.
However, after browsing these forums, i have feeling, that s3 is the most fragile phone ever.
Do i need case ? I don't throw my phone at regular basis or drop them on floor. But do not want to loose my 500 € investment due to one unlucky moment.
I don't affraid of tiny scratches on my display or back cover. I just don't want my screen shattered.
What do you recommend ?
Its always nice just to have a case on your phone regardless. Like you said you just spent 500 bucks on it might as well spend a bit more to keep it safe.

I really like the look of UAG cases.
Probably will order one tonight.
Unfortunatelly i cannot decide between Black (Scout) or White (Navigator). I ordered black galaxy s3.
What color do you have ? Does it catch fingerprints or "oils" from hand ?
No its a matte finish so you can't see fingerprints on it. It also doesn't scuff easy either. As for color that really up to your preference I would go with black because it won't stain but then again its all up to what you want.

I have the Otterbox Commuter on my GALAXY Note II and feel that it is very well protected, the only thing is that the screen protector is self-adhesive instead of being built into the case itself like on the Defender series but I don't feel that it's necessarily a bad thing; some people don't really like the built-in screen protector on the Defender series as dust and dirt can sometimes get under it. With a self-adhesive screen protector separate from the case, you can swap out cases without a problem and dust won't accumulate under it.
In my opinion, any case that you consider should have a bit of a lip around the screen as it can help prevent the screen from coming into contact with an object if you accidentally drop it.
i have all otterbox cases..2 defenders and 2 commuters...the dust does get under the screen protector on the defender...i ripped out the screen protector on one defender and put an anti glare screen protector on my note 2 and put it in the defender and got the best of both worlds...good protection and no dust (so annoying)...i work in a warehouse so i keep it on the clip and couldnt be happier....the commuter is good if you still want to put it in your pocket and have overall good protection....try it u would be pleased...

Im ordering a Nexus 5 and I don't know if I should even buy a case. Im not a person who drops the phone a lot but I do put it on flat surfaces that made my GS3 scratch. Since both of the phones are practically plastic, I thought it might happen to the N5 as well.
I will get a screen protector for sure, but do I need a case?
Thanks.
If you drop it from any significant height it will damage.
I don't drop phones. So I'm going caseless most of the time. Out drinking though I have a neohybrid
As for scratches on flat surfaces, it's pretty tough and I wouldn't worry about it.

No you don't really need a case.
/thread.
it really depends what you do in the day...if say you are huddled over a desk from 9-5 then probably not; if you work in a hospital/clinic constantly moving around you should probably get one; if you go to the gym you should probably get one; etc. it depends on the person.
I am getting a Spigen screen protector and a case to use at the gym and if I'm going to be out doors where it might fall out of my pocket. Other than that, my lifestyle isn't such that I need one. I'm really just worried about the screen. If I damage the body, at some point there will be replacement parts and I can replace it.
Nope you don't need a case... Enjoy the phone as is unlike people uglyfying the phone putting cases.

Do you "need" a case, probably not. Should you have one? Yes! In my experience, I've always used a case and the one time I didn't I dropped my phone and scratched it all up. After I scratched it I quit using a case since it was already damaged and lover the naked feel. Although I'm using a case for this beauty of a phone for sho!

You don't need a case until you drop your phone, then you should have had a case.
It's like saying that you don't wear seatbelts because you don't get into accidents. Only takes one time.

I liked to live dangerously
Rocking my Panther Black HTC One for 3 months, until.... it dropped from my pants pocket
Just one drop and the phone went ugly, got a big deep scratch on the speaker grill
Since then I decided to always use case and screen protector as long as there's GRAVITY
So far Diztronic TPU protects my Panther Nexus 5 nicely
(also slimmest case compared to SGP Slim Armor/Caseology TPU, still waiting for my Ringke Hybrid case to be delivered).
