Hi all,
For the purists amongst you, like myself, I have attached a modified, repacked boot image that will mount (automatically) external storage devices to /storage/usbdisk and /storage.
You need to be rooted and unlocked.
Installation:
Backup your boot image with recovery of your choice
Reboot into bootloader
fastboot flash boot neostock421.img
reboot into android
rename vold.txt to vold.fstab (XDA wouldn't let me upload a vold.fstab)
copy and paste vold.fstab (attached) into /system/etc/
set permissions on vold.fstab to 755
reboot
plug in your drive and enjoy
Notes:
The storage device will not show up in settings/storage, that requires modification of the framework, I could do it (if there is a suitable apktool available) and package the lot as an update.zip but for the time being I won't.
Observations:
I have observed that in Root explorer, the device is mounted read-only initially (you can simply remount read-write), but if I open /storage/usbdisk in Estrongs and return to Root Explorer, it's now read-write. Either way, you should no trouble getting read-write.
Warnings:
Do the above at your own risk, I take no responsibility, bla bla, etc etc.
Thanks for your stuff

Does it support ext3/4 file systems, or only FAT?
This is not good!
ITS GREAT!

It just auto mounts existing supported file systems, nothing more, nothing less.
I haven't tested it with anything other than a fat file system cause that's all I have on my pen drives.
Unfortunately the N10 doesn't appear to source enough power to power my 2.5" hdd, shame cause my XOOM used to power it just fine.

Nope, no notification, and nothing in Settings->Storage (like I said in OP).
Just open your file browser and it's mounted and visible in 3 places;
/mnt/usbdisk
/storage/usbdisk
/usbdisk

Had to wait for some time, I guess it needed it to index the files or whatever, finally it's working.
Thanks for your awesome work, I really missed only the USB OTG storage support from the stock jop40d

What is your HD formatted in, FAT32 or NFTS?
How does this work with TWRP? Meaning, if a flash drive is selected as the destination, on a reboot of TWRP, is the setting retained?

@alias_neo, hit me up on PM... I'd like to work with you to get this to a better state... aka, NTFS & settings storage support... I'm not running stock right now, so I need someone to send me some files and test it!!

Hi,
I'm using CM10a3 by arco... I did the internal/external memory swapping and it worked.
The problem now is that many apps I had installed do not work anymore!
Apollo crashed - can't open it anymore! - while others say that they are not installed!
How can I repair them?
I tried copying all my folders from my internal memory to the sdcard (after the swap), but I still face the problems mentioned above!
Of course they dont work. Because you didnt move them. So now you have to reinstall them again

What do you mean?
They were not installed installed in the sdcard!
And also copying them to the sdcard does not solve the problem as I wrote before...
So what do I have to copy exactly and from where to where?
Can I go back maybe by undoing the swap? Would it work?
Tx

Best to swap immediately after flashing rom..try to clear data and reboot..or better to reflash and swap again. Thats d 1st thing i do. After flashing i boot up, open play store and only download root browser lite before swapping and reboot. Den ony install apps

I mean if u can reflash cm10 it would be better..less chance of bugs..start over. So your process should be..
Wipe data and cache
Flash cm10
Flash Gaaps
Reboot
Then after setting up phone, download any root file browser. I personally dont like d cm10 file manager.
Do the swap. Change 0>1, 1>0
Then REBOOT
And you're done. Can install ur other apps/backups.

OK, tx for your piece of advice, but I don't want to flash everything from scratch.
I swapped int/ext memory back and now everything works again, of course not the swap anyway...
What's the process of swapping in a not-pristine environment (i.e. with many apps installed)?
Tx.

No worries
I haven't tried non-pristine flashing b4 but this should work (its vy similar to the above):
I am not responsible for any mishaps *MAKE NANDROID BACKUP*
Make CWM backup
Wipe data and cache (and dalvik cache, if u want)
Flash cm 10
Flash GAAPS
Reboot
Swap sd card (refer above)
Boot into cwm
Backups and restore > Advance restore > restore data
Wipe cache
Reboot
Pls tell me if it works out=)
If it doesn't jz restore ur backup..
P.s. If some apps FC or have problems after this method, try uninstall and reinstall.

The apks aren't working because when you did the swap you broke the "file paths" (to use windows terminology).... in other words, the phone OS was unable to locate the apk code/file where it expected to find it and the apk force closing/not working was the end result.
Have you undone the swap and found that everything now works?....
If that's the case, then there's no need to reflash. All you need to do is use an app like Gemini app manager to move all your apps to internal phone storage, then apply the swap and finally use Gemini again to move your apps back to your (now swapped) SD card....it's what I do, and it works perfectly every time.....

Correct: undoing the swap, everything works fine again.
You're right: I can confirm that the apps that the OS does not find - after the swapping - are those now on my SDCARD memory (moved via App2SD).
I had forgotten about these, sorry!
So I assume that following your suggestion, these apps will work after the swapping.
Nevertheless, Apollo - which is NOT on my sdcard - after the swapping FC, whereas it works flawlessly in "normal" (not swapped) environment... any idea how to solve that?
Tx a lot.

Yes, doing the move "post swap" with Gemini will work and has worked several times for me....
As for Apollo, I'm afraid I can't help there......I don't use it, I've frozen it in favour of Google Play Music which I downloaded from a link on XDA.
There are some apps which I keep on phone storage no matter what.... apps which I guess are used during start up.....apps like trebuchet, any themes you might have installed (and are using) and any security apps...(anti virus, permissions managers... that sort of thing).....the reason being that the phone performs a media scan at every startup, and the SD card is always the last storage volume to be mounted and scanned, so if there are any apps stored there that are needed during startup, the phone won't be able to access them until the Mount and scan has been performed......(remember I mentioned about file paths in my previous reply.....same principal applies)
Edit...just had a thought about Apollo, there are *some* apps that will only work if installed in phone memory....Gemini app manager is one of them.....maybe Apollo is another?....just a guess...
Edit 2....just had a similar problem with Google play music....to begin with, I had it in phone memory, then I moved it to SD card and suddenly the "widget" for it stopped working and the playlists I'd created were all empty.....moved it back and no issues other than the fact I had to re create the playlists.....

Yes I know, but imho it's not a problem waiting those 10 seconds for the SD to be read... every time you reboot your phone (very rarely in my case, like 2-3 times a week).
My policy anyway is to keep everything on phone storage, if possible, and move things to SD when the space is finishing.

There's a folder called /mnt/sdcard/android/data
If you swap the SDcards, that folder becomes 'shifted' to /mnt/external-sd/android/data.
Apollo dies.

Yes, I do not work as well.
I just tried as well, it seems to be doing the job but the apps are all trying to redownload the data from the web. I believe I am running the latest Directory Bind version but if it doesn't work, it is definitely a deal breaker for me. I will have to revert back to build 253. I was willing to live with the lag of the the new build until Sony updates it and fixes the bugs because lets face it, it isn't perfect. The battery is still also a problem for me, doesn't seem stable...
If anyone knows how to fix the Directory Bind app on 4.2.2 ... please feel free to share the notion.
16 gig is far from being enough storage space with apps such as Batman that require space of 1.81 gig alone on the phone and I'm an app freak!!
Yup, what i did was to install .253 and everything if fine. I have 28gb of game data plus 5gb of music and 4gb of videos but. The game data was a bug issue for me too bad. So just have to wait if its get solved later on and yeah me too i have the lates directory bind

oohhhh....you can create shortcuts to link directories using Root Browser?? Like...folders outside and beyond /Android/data, /Android/obb, or anything outside of /sdcard0 ??
Please, do elaborate! Tell me more. What's your procedure, if I may kindly ask?
I used to use Directory Bind and now I'm on FolderMount. But this other thing you speak of would be very useful. Do you create a shortcut from /data/data and place that shortcut into /sdcard0 and from there symlink that folder in /sdcard0 into your external sd card? Or do you link from /data/data straight into your external? Or does it work differently? Just taking a shot in the dark here. lol

i've tried that tools but dont work for me, my foldermount doesnt work and battery issue make me revert to 434 :silly:
For music (but should be transferrable knowledge).:
Force close music app
I go to data/data/com.google.music (or whatever the exact name). Move the subfolder "files" to a place on your external SD. Find that folder and choose "create shortcut". Put the shortcut in /data/data/com.google.music/
And it just works. Problems of course happen when you flash a new rom as they break the link
I'm sure a good dev could make a cwm flashable script to move and link certain folders

Before applying the ToolKit remount/reboot fix, were you experiencing reboots on 4.2.2 when trying to use FolderMount?
When I was with 4.1.2 .434, I could use FolderMount to move game data to external sdcard but after I updated to 4.2.2 .423, everytime I pin to mount, my ZL reboots. Had to uninstall it!

Does this method work on any type of folder or just music. I tried with root browser and root explorer. Once I move my game data (Asphalt 7, 1.5gb) to xyz folder on my SdCard and try to create a shortcut in the original /android/obb I get the same error message from both apps saying "operation failed, most SdCards do not permit this".
I was hoping that this method was going to be a replacement for directory bind on 4.2.2.
Now I'm sad again....A lot of game data is just too damn big. A 16gb phone has about 11gb left of storage after Android is installed. 11gb nowadays is a joke. I hate apple products but at least you have the option of buying an iPhone with 16, 32 or 64 gb of storage. I wouldnt need an SdCard if I had a 64gb of storage on my phone. Thats the only thing I hate about Android phones.
Just my 2 cents....
Well i sold my zl and had. As4 and there fouldermount worked great on 4.2.2 but when i went through 4.3 i had problems but. I had to sell it bow im back to zl and still i cant use fouldeount it rebots my phone for as long as i have that app installed. Why only on s4's 4.2.2 works??

Hi there. In my Xperia ZL 4.2.2 it restarted too. Did u tried the link above that rp3 posted? It worked like a charm for me!!! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317432. Thank you very much!
Im running Quantum V3, 4.4.1 KitKat on AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3. Last night I played around with phone, unmounted SD card cuz I needed to check my battery drainage. After I remounted it, ESfile explorer says that sdcard1 has "Invalid path". Even tho in settings > storage, it shows that there is sd card and how much space there's left on it...
I did a clean flash of the ROM before if that matters. I don't wanna reflash it and arrange all the apps all over again...
Also when I check the sd card through the app folders, aka in storage/sdcard1, it shows files and everything. What could be the issue that I cant get it to work?

Probably one of the bugs with the latest update by PwnCakes. Maybe you didn't unmount properly, or try formatting the sd card and plug it in again?
I have the same exact thing.
Sigh, at least I'm not alone xD
And I didn't try formatting, got 27 gig stuff on my SD card and unfortunately no space on HDD to copy all the stuff :/
Shame I ain't got enough posts to reply in PwnCakes thread...
I think it might actually be a bug within the rom itself OR ES file explorer. I had this bug since I think a few releases ago
I have the exact same problem. Under "device", i have two copies of extSDcard. I also get the "invalid path" when i tap on sdcard1. I guess i'll wait for a fix, as i don't want to uninstall ES File Explorer, and reinstall, just to lose everything.

Sorry it took so long. Just got done finals and had to get the bus. Below is the settings that you guys can use to make it almost as if nothing was wrong with ES.
Set your directory settings for Home to the External SD Card
Change the default window settings to the following: Sdcard, Home, whatever else you want loaded AFTER these
This will make it so that the first loaded 'window' of ES is the device's internal memory. Then it will load the external SD card as the second 'window'. As long as you check it in the proper order, it will load just fine.

That does work indeed... Thanks!
Followed directions, and i get LAN with a blank page, then i still have to tap on the top of the app, and go into the directory to find sd card, and ext sd card(which used to be sd card1. What would happen if i wiped data on ES File Explorer, deleted the app, and then reinstalled it? Thanks for any help.

Idk how you got LAN. Uncheck all of the windows then select them in the order I provided. Also make sure home directory is set to your external SD card at whatever path it is. Also can you provide a screenshot?

O.K.,now. LAN was checked, in windows settings, but i didn't see it. If the problem is ES File Explorer, will it be fixed in the next upgrade? I've never had this problem with my other roms. Thanks for the help.:good:

I'll be honest with you. I check play d store almost daily to see if there is anything new with ES. I don't know. It might be a problem with the selinux transition from 4.3 to 4.4. It could be a million things but I think its just some back end code for the file system. :/

Right, so in your opinion, wiping & uninstalling, then reinstalling would just bring back the same problem?

Just found FX File Explorer. It works perfectly, and also has a "dark theme", which i like. There's a root access add-on with it, also for free, but it's telling me to grant it root access using my installed "SuperUser" app. How do i do that with that app? Thanks, again for all your help.:good:

Super user should pop up a prompt if you're rooted. Also, I know the error that breaks ES but idk how to fix it myself. Is a problem with permissions.xml

I get the prompt, but it keeps being denied by SU, however, it goes into Titanium Backup. I'm wondering if i really need root access. I don't think that i have it with ES File Explorer.

@grunt0300 if you really want, I can take a look into the permission.xml. however, no way I am making the commits to my device at the moment. All I know (without looking up the exact wording) is that in permissions.xml is a line for read external storage and that line is set to media/mnt/sdcard instead of storage/sdcard1.

Title basically says it. I bought my wife a galaxy tab 2 about a year ago and used the guide from the link below to swap the internal memory with the sd card memory. I bought myself the galaxy tab 3 7" and have been looking for a tut to do the same thing. I haven't found anything that seems to work though. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

The script is pointing to the wrong location for SD card Dev/block/vold/179:25. If you are familiar with Odin and comfortable with the possibility of bricking or rendering your tablet unbootable, try editing that to 179:17 and running the script. I don't guarantee that will work, but that is the address of my ext SD running cm11 on a sm-t310.
Yours may be different on a 210. Run mount from terminal and hunt for the 179:XX for sdcard1 and verify before trying though.

I have edited the script to work with SM-T310 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2607125. Post there your device node and I can edit for other Galaxy Tab 3 devices.

If you do make that change it will wok. I have it running on my sons now overloaded tab3 kids. Using 32g card.o
Edit: I changed it to 179:73. Works well. Many large games running fine.

Could you give me a little more guidance on doing this? Basically just follow the tut in my first post but change the script to point towards the sd card?
Thanks a bunch for your help.

Yeah, just follow all the directions except edit those two characters IN THE SCRIPT. I've used this script with smanager perfectly on my old p3113, so thought I might get it to work on my sons.

Just a couple more questions if you don't mind:
Mine is a galaxy tab 3 sm-T210/sm-t21or. Does that change anything?
As long as I have a backup in twrp, i can always restore (in case something is royally screwed up), right?

I would test it and see if it works, then if it does, have it set to run at boot, but a backup never hurts. I just backed mine up before testing blackhawk kernel, which worked well on the kids tab3.

I didn't know that, I found out what my sons was while trying to use the internal2external app, as it lists all the mounts. I was half a sleep for my other posts, or I would of caught that last night. Anyways, good to know.

Run the command "mount" without quotes in terminal . Look for your sd card
And which device address it's using. Verify that 170:17 is your device node.

So I mounted ran "mount" in terminal emulator and it refers to anything on my external sd card as 179:73. (@zibrah3ed sorry I didn't catch that in your first post)
So I guess that's the number I need.
Thanks for your help guys.
I did it and it worked perfectly. Having one gta game on my phone no longer prevents me from installing other apk's. Thanks for all your help. I'm sure this will be useful to a lot of people with 8gb of internal memory.
I was wondering if you got it working. I noticed there is not much information about these tabs, compared to the tab 2, which is the last gtab I had. I bought my sons kids tab assuming it would have similar support. All that was really important was root/recovery and some sort of memory swap, as I loaded it with many of the games I have on my 32gb tab. I took back a nabi because sometimes the memory swap I was using wouldn't stick on reboot, and getting it going again would be to much for my 4 year old. Anyways, glad you got it going.

yeah, that is the same as mine. and it worked for me instantly. I have a 32 gb card, so maybe your 64 gb card is the issue. I wish I could help you more, but I'm just not too knowledgeable about this stuff.
Maybe one of the guys that helped me could jump in?
Good Luck

First of all you need to be rooted. Then you need to grant es file explorer superuser permission when it asks. then you go into /data folder. You should see a lot of files/folders in there. If you can't you probably aren't using es file explorer as a rooted user. Then you long select the script and select properties. then change permissions by checking read, write, execute (all 3 should be checked) under the owner option. Then so to smanager and continue the tut
