Hate the kindle home screen? Me too. I tried side loading Vire. Nothing fantastic, but it has a few applets (widgets),multiple screens, vote wallpapers and some cool transitions.see attached images. Did not get one of app drawer, it is nothing special.
Looking good. I have next launcher working and yandex shell . Yandex has it's own panels and it's working flawlessly. Wallpapers do not work though

I like vire launcher also. I can't get it to work when in the home launcher. I downloaded it from another app store. I will try sideloading it. Rignt now it just closes when accessing it. Your screen looks gtreat. Where are the wallpapers placed after download to get them to show up?

I HAD TO SHUT DOWN AND RESTART TO GET A NEW VIRE WALL PAPER TO SHOW UP. I JUST LOADED AVIATE. IT'S OK I GUESS, YOU CAN LOAD ANY PICTURE ON THE HOME SCREEN AND THE MOST USED APPS BAR ON THE HOME SCREEN IS NICE, I ALSO LIKE HOW THEY ORGANIZE THE APP DRAWER BY TYPE. I'LL PUT UP A GRAPHIC. GO TO getaviate.com for that app. vire can be had from the playstore. that's why you got to sideload things. neither one let's real widgets run, they crash. there has to be a file missing on the kindle. Aviate relies on the google framework i think and because i can't get it to run stable, that's a problem.
aviate home screen
Aviate has a very clean home screen replacement somewhat like Goggle Now, the home screen slides left, right, and down to reveal other panels. For a non rooted replacement it's very cool. i have the dark theme with a photo for the background. It took a week or so to get a activation code from aviate. For something that is ment only for phones, it's not bad. getaviate.com
I have 4 invitations left for aviate. If anyone is interested, pm me your Gmails and I will invite you.
Sent from beneath my invisibility cloak
Buzz launcher also works. It's not a very good home screen, but it works.
Also: Can someone PLEASE invite me to Aviate! It looks so good, thanks in advance.

To use Aviate, use the code "MUSIC" in all caps.
For Aviate, you can also use "YAHOO"...
Aviate is definitely the best home screen replacement for the hdx if your non rooted. It allows the use of widgets and wallpapers. I have Aviate, google apps, and SwiftKey installed. This combination definitely gives the HDX the sense of being a real android tablet without root, especially since Amazon disabled the "Special offers" for me. I'm loving this tablet now ?

How'd you do this without root? I've followed on how to install Play Store but it doesn't work for me. Sideloaded Aviate but it doesn't let me set it to default launcher.

pm block com.amazon.kindle.otter
To return to the stock launcher, pm unblock com.amazon.kindle.otter then uninstall Aviate.

OMG, this in particular is crucial. I am using NovaLauncher on my HDX, but the "HEY! WHAT HOME LAUNCHER DO YOU WANT THE DEFAULT TO BE?!?! HEY! ARE YOU SURE?!" crap that kept happening every time I hit the home button was driving me nuts! Thanks a million

You'll need to have ADB installed and configured on your computer. You'll also need Kindle HDX drivers (instructions also available on this forum). There are tons of manuals on how to do that. Once you have ADB, launch the ADB shell in the command line by executing the following command in the same folder where you have the ADB executable:
adb shell
Once you are in (a command line window will appear), type:
pm block com.amazon.kindle.otter
That's it.
So I Androidified my HDX 7 as follows:
Sideloaded Dodol launcher, which allows widgets and wallpaper (you have to check the "exclusive wallpaper" check box in launcher settings), as well as icon themes etc.
Disabled the stock launcher using the "adb and fastboot light" program with the block otter command (as detailed above)
Installed all the google apps (except maps, but google earth works great)
Installed ultimate rotation control app, which allows you to force rotation on any app, including the launcher homescreen (without it the dodol homescreen is always in one portrait orientation)
Installed the hacked Kindle app which has a different signature and therefore can be installed on the fire hdx and logged into like a normal app, so you can access your kindle book library with the dodol launcher!
Installed 1Mobile market, as an alternative to the play store, which allows direct downloads of APKs and updates. I even updated the google play services to the latest version, as well as many of the google apps and they still all work perfectly.
Overall, my unrooted kindle Fire HDX7 now resembles a standard android tablet (I even had a stranger ask me how I converted my kindle into a "proper" tablet!) , and can be fully returned to the stock Fire interface at any time, i.e. when I get bored. Simples!
Blocking otter
Will blocking otter not cause issues, if Amazon finds (and installs) an update?
I haven't rooted at all as I'm patiently waiting for FireOS 5, but I would love to be able to use a different launcher.
I am a kinda noob...not much experience but I did root and unlock a Samsung phone a few years ago
I've sideloaded a few apps on my hdx...but I don't think I've used the adb....unless it's what I used to unlock my Samsung infuse. ...will doing the otter block void my warranty?

Hi,
Last month I rooted my Kindle. I decided to give it to my girlfriend to use but (for obvious reasons deregistered it from my Amazon account). Now after it has been deregistered she is unable to get the apps that i had on there (she has registered her own amazon account). The apps are still on there after a little exploring i did on ES explorer. They will not show up under home>apps where all the other apps are. Root access was not removed from this Kindle but the Superuser icon and Google Play Store icons were (along with the rest of the apps i downloaded from Google Play Store). I can still use the apps if I go into ES Explorer under Tools> App Manager and click on the app it will give me an option to open and it works just fine. I just opened up Google Play Store and downloaded the "Craigslist" app and it shows up under the apps page. It is just very inconvenient to do it this way and I want to know if anyone has any idea what is going on. I am completely lost!
Thank you!
Have u tried using an alternate launcher like go launcher HD? For the record, you can not just simply install alternate launchers from the play store and have them work out of the box, minus the exception of using other ROMs like kinology or cm. You would have to copy installed apk from
/data/app to /system/app and fix its permissions to avoid boot loop. I advise using something like kindle fire first aid or a app called kindle free for it though. Also thought I'd mention if you choose this route and are on amazon is x.4.1 or higher, you won't be able to set the background, I made a fix for that. If you decide to try using an alternate launcher, I'll send u a link to it, word to the wise though, if you choose to use an alternate launcher it is advised to run my wallpaper fix first or your system partition may run out of disk space and be unable to complete the fix. I really need to put my wallpaper fix in my signature... Anyways post back if you would like to try this.
Also thought I'd mention the apps are probably not showing up because of ownership issues, just a guess though, because I tried to run a free app from my mom's kindle 1st gen on mine and it refused to even open saying I didn't own it... Free app... Irony... Anyways that's just a guess, I'd love to test this theory using my moms account on this kindle but I currently have cm 10.1 installed so I can't without reflashing.

Hi,
Thank you for the response! My Kindle is running 8.4.3. I am thinking of just doing a factory reset and re rooting it because i have the program all set up on my computer, just need to re run the program. Then i will have a clean slate to work with. If my logic is correct i should be able to just start from scratch again which is relatively easy compared to finding a new solution. Let me know what you think.
Thank you
I'm confused, wouldn't you still need to login to your account to re download stuff from the cloud causing the problem all over again?

Amazon cloud works great. My girlfriend has her own account and can download any of the apps she wants off of there. The problem is that the icons dont show up for Superuser or Google Play Store. I can still use Superuser but i cannot touch the app icon to go into it but i know its still running because Titanium Backup was asking for its permission. Also when i go into Google Play Store i am able to download apps and have them appear on my kindle apps page but the original Google Play Store is not there so i have to go into ES Explorer to access Google Play (im trying to make it easier for her by having the Icon for Google Play Store on the home app page). I am having issues with Google Play and Superuser (which isnt a big deal that i cant touch the app to open it) but Google Play Store i would like to show up on the main page.

Oh OK I get what your saying now, that is strange, I'm starting to wonder if I misunderstood you from the beginning. Yea if doing a restore still for some weird reason doesn't fix it just use an alternate ui, I kinda don't like the carousel anymore myself after flashing a normal android os on mine, but restoring the os should work.

I haven't played around with many launchers but that's what it is. Specifically, I think it may be this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790392
There are no pics there either but just from reading a lot on this site and others that's what I think it is. In my opinion, these work best when kftv launcher is frozen (requires root and xposed) but some don't want to completely bypass it because you lose prime content. Its not the only launcher. there are lots of them but I do like this developer. He has shortcuts you can use from within kodi to launch youtube, netflix and get back to aftv homescreen.
If you are rooted and do freeze the main launcher I'd just use caution. The other day I read someone on a different site froze kftv with no backup launcher installed. Now he's stuck. I don't want to make it sound dangerous. I was actually using a different mod that launched right into xbmc without xposed modules but I was careful and had a fallback launcher so if anything went wrong I still had something to boot in to.
Or if you just want to safely play around and you aren't rooted you might try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782307
I tried it when I first got AFTV and it's pretty cool but I notice it's had some nice updates since. It basically runs on top of KFTV launcher so I think hitting the home button takes you right back to the normal menu. It does help eliminate all the clicks it takes to get from start to the app you want--IMO one of the weaker points in the aftv ui
Thanks for the information. I'm going to look into it. I'm rooted with custom boot menu and clockworkmod recovery. If anything happens, I can easily boot into recovery and flash a rooted ROM again.
Klit75 its not firedtv launcher. I am not sure what it is, but definitely not that launcher.
The answer is simple, install the amazon app store apk, reboot, finished. Keep the apk, cause if you need to install amazon apps you will have to uninstall then reinstall when finished. It basically disables you from doing anything on the amazon store while you have the app store installed, but thats the way you get your apps to look like that.

I'm a little confused. The amazon app store is already installed by default on all Amazon Fire TV's. It's on the list of apps when you go to settings/manage installed apps/
Are you saying to download the amazon apk from elsewhere, sideload it and install it over the existing Amazon app store?

That is exactly what he is saying it works but you wont be able to install anymore amazon apps. You would have to uninstall amazon appstore and resynch to get the firetv version of appstore.... soo install everything you need from the amazon app store first.

lol Okay, will give it a try! Sounds simple enough. Amazon App Store sucks anyway and I already have the Play store installed.
I wonder if it will auto populate the list of apps when I install any new apps from Play Store? I'm also assuming sideloading apps doesn't get affected by this? I will try both when I get home and will report back my findings.
Thank you guys.
Amazon's parental control Freetime app does not appear to be very useful. It seems to allow me to select only those apps downloaded from the Amazon app store, and not choose from all installed on the tablet (including the ones from Google Play).
has anyone found an alternative? I'd hate to have to go through a paying service (although, Remote Screen Time seems to work best, but still costs $5/month).
thanks!

Have you tried the "Screen Time Parental Control" app? I use it.
Kids Place would be great, but the home button can't be locked by the kids place app, because the fire launcher always starts if pressing the home button. So it is not a parental controled app...
Has anyone any idea how to make the lock possible ? Are there root rights necessary ?
Thanks,
Klaus

I use Smart Launcher. My device is rooted and it's running 5.0.1. It was a birthday gift for my 4 year old. I rooted it and disabled updates and deleted the fire launcher after I installed Smart Launcher. So I don't do anything with it now myself unless it's installing some new game for my 4 year old. Is 5.1.1 not able to be rooted? I'm not keeping up with the scene on this tablet because I don't use it myself, only when I set it up for my son, and it was on 5.0.1 after whatever initial update it got when I first turned it on.
Anyone a kids Place or secured APP running on a 5.1.1 fire?

ok, with supertool (see link at the bottom), just install google playstore and novalauncher. Permanent root is not necessary ! It worked perfectly for me and kids place doing well !
Please notice that a factory reset and a 5.1.1 version is needed before using the super tool from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=64358332#post64358332
I tried AppLock from Qizmodo, has been perfect, but isn't working with 5.1.1 anymore. Really sad. So maybe Mobile Fence will work, website says it is compatible with 5.1.1.
I don't wanna just lock apps, but set a time limit for e.g. games so that my daughter is able to use the musci player all day, but will not play games for several hours. If someone has an idea how to get AppLock running again, would be great. I contacted the company itself, but doesn't seem they are working on the app anymore.
Have you tried supertool to get novalauncher ? Maybe that can cope with applocker.

I don't see the benefit of novalauncher. I can hide unused apps, ok. But I want to use some apps with a predefined time limit. So I installed some nice games, want to define the group "games" and set a time limit for their usage, let's say 1h daily. I find no way to do that with novalauncher...
Try Nester, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.mindquake.nester&hl=en
I used the free version of dinner time, but the pay version(3.99) adds a couple non essential stuff.

You can simply disable that via the Kids Place - Parental Control app!!!
I found a good one: lollipop launcher by mobint. It allows you to lock apps on home screen and hide others on app drawer. It's free too. I recommend it.

I've been trying out disabling some services / bloat and seeing what side effects there are.
So far here is what I've disabled:
Code:
[email protected]:/ # pm list packages -d
package:com.amazon.precog
package:com.amazon.recess
package:com.amazon.whisperplay.contracts
package:com.amazon.bueller.photos
package:com.amazon.kindle.cms
package:com.amazon.client.metrics
package:com.amazon.device.software.ota
package:com.amazon.whisperlink.core.android
package:com.amazon.application.compatibility.enforcer
package:com.amazon.whisperplay.service.install
package:com.amazon.device.software.ota.override
package:com.amazon.bueller.music
package:com.amazon.tv.launcher
If you need to use the FireOS Settings you *can't* disable 'com.amazon.tv.launcher' as when that is disabled it prevents you from accessing the system settings which you could get into via FireStarter or TV Launcher. But when this is disabled there is an android prompt that lets you pick your new default launcher and until you pick 'use always' each time you press the home button you can pick between your various launchers before deciding on the one to use, once you pick one then the home button goes back to normal behavior. So now my default launcher is TV Launcher, with FireStarter kept so that I can still access app settings to delete cache, clear data, uninstall, force stop, etc... and I've also got the Android TV leanback launcher installed but haven't been using it.
I do have rbox's FTV mod apk for xposed installed (not sure exactly what it is called off the top of my head) so its possible that this may also play a role in the home behavior.
Once I have root on my FireTV Stick when rbox is able to get the custom recovery and pre-rooted ROMs done I plan to disable those same services as the Stick is terribly slow on 5.0.x (still on 5.0.3 dev preview, thanks amazon :-/ ) as I believe the usability of the device will improve enough that I can actually use it again.
Does anybody know what "com.amazon.device.software.ota.override" is for? Sounds like it needs to be disabled like "com.amazon.device.software.ota".
I'm not sure what it is but I did disable it and haven't had any side effects.
And I did figure out that you can choose to temporarily disable the Amazon launcher and then pick a new default (like TV Launcher) and then re enable Amazon launcher and then it will no longer run at startup and you can just jump into it for prime usage as needed. I also did update the stick to 5.0.5.0 and rooted it with King root and disabled the same services on the stick.

Thanks for your post. I followed your instructions at the same as rooting my Fire Sticks for the first time, but I've found that no Amazon Instant Videos will play now.
Would any of these disabled services affect that, or is it maybe just because it is rooted that Amazon won't allow video playback? Just trying to pinpoint the problem.
If you disable com.amazon.tv.launcher that will prevent you from accessing the menu to see any prime videos.
Otherwise, no those shouldn't have an impact on playing prime. I've had no issues with prime video playing.
I do have com.amazon.tv.launcher enabled but not set as my home screen. Once you disable it as long as you have 2 other "launchers" android will ask you which one you want to use. Then you pick the new default you want and then you can reenable the Amazon launcher and still have the launcher you want as default.

Where can I get leanback launcher? Will it work on fire stick? I'm about to disable all the services you recommend.
Will you upload somewhere the android leanback launcher? Many thanks.

i too cannot disable com.amazon.tv.ime or I will get a black screen on my aftv2. On my aftv1 it disables without issue.

I was able to install the Leanback Launcher on my stick a few weeks back but it must be installed / converted as a system app for it to run.

Would you share the apk please

Sure, no problem. I just got home from work, give me an hour or so and I'll post a link and the procedure I used. FYI, I was also able to load Google Play (Leanback) but wasn't able to download/update apks for some reason. It would go through the whole procedure (asking you to accept permissions, etc...) but when the download started , Play store would crash.
I'm definitely more exhausted from work than I thought I was, but I promise to have the link up tomorrow morning (9-10 am East. US)

No worries, thanks.
Do I need to install Google play services?
Enviado desde mi A0001 mediante Tapatalk
I do have Play Services installed as well as the other Google apk's (Login Mgr, Svc Framework). After following sconnyuk's guide to rooting the stick (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3399298) and then disabling ota/bloat/services, I installed the google apps and the Android TV Launcher (Leanback). The launcher will not run until converted to a system app. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1fntiva8r5ilj6d/FireStick Leanback.zip?dl=0
I found this list here in the for of a script.
I disabled everything in this script except the home related section.. Will tinker with it later some.
Basically if you are not using your firetv for anything amazon related.. This list is fine.
Notice in the script the # before some commands. These will not initiate in script by default and I did not disable those. A few I did but you got to pick and choose. They are not meant to just go disabling on a whim.
Also o didn't run the script.. I wen through and manually added each one in terminal on my fire TV
This is more for people who are not amazon subscribers and just don't want all the amazon junk. If you use it, some of these may not be for you.. Me though, I wanted to strip amazon from the device as much as possible.

There is the link. And that guy ets the credit. I just stumbled into it. It is a more expansive list if you are wanting to remove most of the amazon from your fire tv

Excellent find. Will be using this on my devices as I only have a handful of things disabled, I wonder if the stick is more responsive with all this disabled.
I have a ftv v2 with root and recovery. I want to change the default Launcher and use kodi instead.
Can i just freeze aftvlauncher and use xbmclauncher to use kodi? Will firestarter work normally if i set it to launch with 2 home button presses?
I am afraid to freeze aftvlauncher and don't be able to start any app. Bricking my ftv.
Thanks
Why freeze aftv launcher ? Just let firestarter/Kodi launch at startup and let the avtf launcher run in background...doesn't matter I think, you will not really recognize it...

Try using the XBMC Launcher. This launcher works to perfection on a rooted first generation Fire TV. Not sure if it will work when updating to OS 5. May have to wait for a new release of [MOD][XPOSED]Fire TV Mods by rbox. I'll probably not update to OS 5 until I know for sure that this launcher will work with it.
I've disabled the stock launcher, along with some other things, details in this thread there are side effects of disabling the stock launcher but I'm ok with them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/root-disabling-apps-services-bloat-t3325333
I can't say for certain if XBMC Launcher will work or not (not tried using it). I know you can't have the standard Kodi 16 as a 'launcher' as you cannot choose it from the launcher selection window you get when the AFTV launcher is disabled.

The reason behind disable / freeze is that it will stop the launcher from consuming resources.
May not be entirely needed on AFTV2 but on the Stick (and maybe AFTV1) I'm sure it would help.

Thanks for your answer. I saw your post but i thought it was a bit extreme. I only need to access kodi with the home button and firestarter with 2 presses so i can stop kodi when it sometimes freezes.
I used xbmclauncher before with FTV v1 OS3 and it worked great. But i didn't see anyone saying if it works with OS 5.X so i'm afraid of testing it myself. And i think it needs the rbox module to work and its outdated but i guess is still working? Rbox says it will update his module so i guess i should wait.

Configure firestarter to start your "launcher" or Kodi with a single click. Set it to launch firestarter with a double click. You really can't brick doing this. If you find out you can't get back into the default Fire TV launcher for any reason, just side-uninstall firestarter via adb.
I had some issues when setting Kodi as launcher using XBMCLauncher on my Stick.
Kodi didn't seem to like it and moving back and forth to other apps like iPlayer etc it would reset its settings and act like it'd been reverted to default until I FC'd it. When it froze it could get itself into a loop as well as because it hasn't closed properly it try to 'launch itself again (if that makes sense)
I found it better to set Firestarter as Launcher, single click, start on boot and set Kodi as double click. Put Kodi in top left of app drawer as well so its always close if you click back to FireStarter by accident.
This way you always have FireStarter to fall back on if Kodi crashes.
You can also edit the Kodi keymap to have the 'Back' button on the Home screen open something else like favorites so that you don't accidentally back out of Kodi when navigating menus etc.
(Not knocking XBMCLauncher at all, I use it on my OUYA for exactly this and it works fine, just noting issues I've had on the AFTVS for others)

Yeah, froze using Titanium.
One thing to be aware of is if your using another/freezing AFTVLauncher and use the Android dialog to set the new Launcher as 'default' then there is no way to reset this like in normal Android. Theres no option in Amazon Settings or anywhere else in the GUI.
I think thees a way using SQL or by installing another Home Launcher which will prompt the Android dialog again.

Or maybe unfreezing the amazon launcher and deleting the other one?
Anyway I have another question. Do you set firestarter with adb detection? Cause I am afraid if activate this and something goes wrong I won't be able to access the firetv using wifi adb? Is that correct? And also does firestarter works without adb detection while also not having the amazon launcher?
Thanks again

Yup, unfreezing AFTVLauncher will do it but you have to be able to get to Firestarter to launch it, not good if everything is frozen
If I remember, FireStarter has the launcher intent so if its the only launcher available, Android will default to that anyway.
So, if its the default Launcher, you wont need to use adb detection as it will use the Home button and start on boot anyway.
Is it possible to set Firestarter as a default launcher without disabling a stock one? If so -- how?
I use Fs on fire tv on os5 and it works fine. Just setup your single and double click home buttons.
