Odin Fails to flash my device - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone, I actually have a SGH-I317m (Rogers Note 2), but thought I would post here since this gets more traffic.
I have been having constant problems with Odin trying to flash files to my Note 2.
Currently using the factory Samsung USB cable, disconnecting any other USB devices connected (BT gamepad) to my computer, and being sure to run Odin as "Administrator" in Windows 7 (64bit).
I've used the recommended Odin 1.85 as well as the latest Odin 3.x, with the newest release being somewhat more reliable.
Basically I've grown too paranoid to try and flash custom roms, and even the root package to my phone in fear of a permanent soft brick. KIES failed to update my phone to stock 4.3, so I then used Odin to flash it. I recently tried to flash a root package, which failed every time, then my stock image, which failed about 14 out of 15 tries. Once the Stock ROM flashed successfully, I breathed a sigh of relief and gave up.
Is there something specific that could be causing Odin to fail so consistantly? My phone is stock 4.3,recovery, unrooted, with locked bootloader and SIM.

I've seen recommendations that a Factory Reset be performed after flashing a new ROM, which I have not done. What is the logic behind this?
I'd be willing to try, but without root (aka without Titanium BackUp) a Wipe is not ideal. That being said, if I put all these flashing issues behind me, I'd happily give it a try.
I am curious to try Mobile Odin as well, which of course requires root.
The fact that both Odin and Kies failed to flash my device is curious. I'd like some suggestions on how to proceed.
I'd be happy not flashing custom ROMs, however I do feel that root access is a requirement for my usage.

Anyone?

what root package did you use?

The one found in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004650this thread, which is for my device.

search for newest samsung mobile usb driver... make sure its the latest one and download it
uninstall the good for nothing kies software... reboot your pc and install the samsung mobile usb driver.
then connect your device and let windows reinstall the driver....
then try odin again.

Thanks. I ditched Kies once it failed to flash my device, then failed to recover it.
I will try reinstalling the driver. The one I have installed likely came from the "Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit", which hasn't been updated awhile.
I will try and report back.

Interesting. Samsung's Canadian site does not have USB drivers, and the US version doesn't include my model... I will keep digging.

Ok, I've resolved my issues and will post here for others should they have the same. My issue was caused by usb drivers. Uninstall Kies, and any Samsung drivers you may have installed. Reboot your pc, and install the latest Samsung drivers from here, for your device.
http://m.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I317TSAATT
After, plug in your phone, and let Windows install what it needs. Then proceed with Odin as normal.
Thanks to everyone for their help.

[SOLVED] Galaxy SIII recovery issue

Hello,
Let me start off by saying if this is the wrong place to post this please inform me of the right forum.
I just recently got a Samsung Galaxy SIII (on August 29) and everything was working really well, until today. Yes it is rooted. I plugged the phone into my computer and Kies said there was a firmware update for my phone. I began doing the upgrade and my beloved windows computer got the blue screen of death during the actual update process.
After restarting my computer, I began to do the update recovery to continue with my upgrade. Same blue screen. I spoke to a rogers tech rep and he requested I re-install my Kies software, which I did. Upon having no success from that I began to do more research, however most of them are saying to reflash the stock firmware (which I have) using ODIN. I have no success here as well. Every time i do get into download/recovery mode, ODIN recognizes my phone, but fails when i click start.
In my recovery mode the information i see is as follows:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-1747M
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
QUALCOM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE
Is there anything at all I can do to fix this? Or am I one of those most unfortunate people who just got screwed lol.
ANY assistance is VERY MUCH appreciated!
Thanks in advance
If you have clockwork recovery, try formatting the system first then flash the ROM. Just dont reboot without flashing the ROM first.
Have you tried the emergency firmware load through KIES?

thank you for the quick reply! sorry for my late one, just got home from a family emergency...
no I don't have CWM.. I'm very familiar with it though I didn't put it on my SIII (i was planning to do so tonight)
I've tried the emergency firmware, however it asked for a code which I don't have :S
I'm new to Samsung's version of Android, previously I owned an Xperia X10
Try running Odin on a different computer
If you're using a desktop use the usb ports on the back Odin don't like the usb hub on front, or try different computers, I have one computer that Odin will never work on but I go right to my other one and works fine, try restarting pc or uninstall Odin and download a different version, also try downloading a few different roms try these below, I've been in that position then finally after trying and trying a Rom will finally take

Couple of questions before anyone can answer...
1 . How are you trying to update .. through KIES or ODIN ?
2 . How are you connecting it to your computer via USB .. Front or Rear ports ?
Using Kies and side ports on laptop
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Are you using the micro usb cable that came with the phone?
A lousy cable or as mentioned above a crummy usb port could be a source of problems. Also is the laptop plugged in and the s3 fully charged?
Kies uses Odin to flash the firmware update via the USB cable to the phone, so technically you are using Odin. You wouldn't really notice Odin was being used during the flash unless you look carefully at the small dialog in the upper left corner of the s3 screen during the update.
hi, what im trying to do is use odin to install root66 jb rom but before i do that i am running aokp 4.1.2 . do i first need to wipe phone before i use odin to flash rom or is it ok to just go head and install with odin? what i mean by wipeing phone is to wipe data /factory reset wipe cash wipe dav format system and what ever else there is in cwm to do. im just not sure havent done this before so some help would great.. thanks

You'll need to do that wipe sooner or later (otherwise the stock ROM will fail to boot); you can either do it now or wait until after you've done the flash and use the stock recovery to do the wipe. I'd consider doing the wipe first to be easier.
Actually what I'm having issues with is Kies itself. I used a separate computer so that I could download Kies new but it's also a problem. Is there an easier way?

Are you using the kies version from the support page on Samsung.com for YOUR phone? If you're trying to use kies instead of a mini version for a US phone, that hasn't worked for any of the other Galaxy line phones (at least in my experience).
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I don't know if this qualifies as easier (it would for me), but if Kies isn't working for you for whatever reason, you might try just using Odin directly. You can get Odin itself over in this thread, and completely stock images over in this thread; if you want the latest AT&T build, that would be this one.
(If you're slightly more ambitious, you could also try the rooted-but-otherwise-stock images found here, as a gateway to future customisation, but that's entirely up to you...)
Yes it's Kies from the support page. I will try with Odin directly see how that goes. If not I will be back LOL
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
To put it kindly, Kies is a steaming pile of cr4p. To be honest, upgrading via Odin with the official ROM is the best way to go. I spent days trying to get my phone to connect to Kies and it was a mess. I went to the AT&T store and they told me that there wasn't anything that they can do, this is an open issue. It works for some people, not others.
Finally I downloaded Kies on my wife's Mac and it worked. So maybe try a Mac?
My sister has a Mac I will try that

USB only works to charge/triangle away doesn't work/ can't revert to stock.

I'm currently running task650's current ROM and ktoonz newest kernel . I'm unable to connect my phone to my PC via USB. I've tried 3 different USB cables including the original one that came with the phone. I'm trying to revert to stock to swap out phone, but I can't flash through Odin(cant restore stock recovery) and triangle away won't let me reset flash counter. I'm at a loss for ideas, I've been looking through the forums for days and I can't find anything . I've tried flashing different ROMs/kernels with no luck.

is USB debugging mode on? did you make a nandroid when you first rooted? that would contain the original firmware you were using before flashing anything. are you connecting to your PC after putting the phone in download mode or recovery mode? just covering all the bases, buddy.
Yes I've done all the above, however during a flash of cm10 i soft bricked somehow...and lost all data on my internal.. So I no longer have my original nandroid I'm not new to flashing at all and never imagined that would happen I've learned to expect the unexpected now.

I flashed a rom (yes it was for the proper device) and I followed everything step by step. My phone went into a bootloop where it vibrates and the samsung logo pops up then it turns off and starts over again. I turned off the phone and tried to go into recovery mode but it just shows the TWRP screen and then go into the bootloop again. I also tried going into download mode to odin back to stock but my device isn't even recognized even after installing kies. what can i do???

Did you recently flash anything else?

Reinstall the drivers for this device, a simple google can give you following information:
This is a Windows device driver error. As device drivers can be used anytime your computer is trying to use a hardware resource, it can be difficult to tell which process is causing the error. If you notice the error when trying to do a specific task, identifying the source of the problem may be easier. For detail, see error.info/windows/driver-18.html

What's needed for backup

Hi. I have a new GS4 arriving in a few days and wanted to find out what needs to be done in order to use titanium backup and to do a nandroid.
I have read conflicting stories that it needs to be fully rooted, that it only needs the bootloader unlocked, and that the bootloader comes already unlocked on the T-Mobile version. Can someone please clarify for me? I don't need to flash a custom ROM or kernel or anything like that. The phone is for my son, so all I want is to be able to do full backups for him. Thanks.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
You need to be rooted.
-Titanium BU will backup your app plus app data
-For a nandroid backup you'll need to have a custom recovery (ie CWM, TWRP)
I used this for root (it will install SU binary and app, plus stock recovery)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005
To install custom recovery you can use Odin to flash the tar version or use ROM manager, GOO ect depending on the recovery you want.
Everything baseballfanz posted.
The M919 Bootloader comes Unlocked outta the box.
For years, I've used Titanium Backup with the Pro key. Excellentsand theGGold Standard. Does everything except pour your coffee
I also use My Backup Pro as a redundancy. I primarily use it to backup & restore my Call Logs, MMS, SMS, etc . It also backs up & restores Apps and Data. I set it to back on a schedule.
For a Custom Recovery, I use TWRP 2.5.0.2.
https://hotfile.com/dl/230303459/7ce1553/openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.2-jfltexx.tar.html
If you decide to flash TWRP, don't flash with Goo Manager as it will install TWRP 2.6.0.0 of which known issues have been reported. TWRP 2.5.0.2 has very little issues if any. I've been using it for months without any issues. Working flawlessly. TWRP also gets installed with ODIN. If you need the steps, let me know and I'll post them.
For Rooting, I also use CF-AUTO-ROOT by Chainfire installed with ODIN. Easy as pie, or however that saying goes.
Any questions, post away
Thanks to both of you. I'm already familiar with Titanium as I use the pro version on my tmo MT4G, rooted with cwm and running cyanogen. At least for now. I'll be getting myself the GS4 as well soon. So I know the virtues of using TB.
However, my son wants to stick with stock and get ota updates and I want him to be able to remove bloatware, backup everything, and be able to tweak a few things like the whole YouTube link issue(if it's still an issue) so we're looking for a reasonable compromise.
I also currently use cwm ROM manager app, droidwall, and spare parts+ which I would like to put on his phone if they will work.
Biker1... When you say bootloader comes unlocked, that's for the tmo one we will be getting?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Yes the T-mobile version M919 come with an unlocked bootloader.
OK thx good to know. So what will be my first step when unboxing it in order to be able to use the aforementioned apps? I also have root explorer, mybackup root, s2e, and superuser on the MT4G if they will be useful on the GS4.

Charge the battery fully!
Make sure you have a good known working usb cable. You should as it will be a new one.
You wanna have enough juice to do your installations and if things run a little long, you don't wanna get stuck in the middle
You have those Rooted apps so you can root the S4 using:
CF-AUTO-ROOT by Chainfire using ODIN. I'll post a link soon.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005
In addition, install a Custom Recovery. There are a few good ones.
Personally, I use TWRP 2.5.0.2
Don't use Goo Manager as that will install version 2.6.0.0 which has known issues. Been using 2.5.0.2 for months without issue, but you can use a custom recovery of your choice of course.
So:
Charge battery
Have a good usb cable
ODIN CF-AUTO-ROOT
Boot
ODIN Custom Recovery
Boot
Check you S4 to make sure you're good to go.
Make a Nandroid
Install your Apps
When ready, download and Flash a ROM and Enjoy
OK it seems he really wants a chance to play with it out of the box. So, once its charged, it's his for now. I'm wondering though, if the bootloader is unlocked already does that mean if we choose to root it at a later date it won't need to be wiped or will it still lose anything not on the sd card?
I already went through this with one son who got a new phone and ended up losing everything on the old one because he wouldn't let me root it from the start and back things up. But that phone would've required a full wipe when I unlocked the bootloader.
If this guy starts setting things up and installing apps and data and such, and then wants me to root it for TB, will he lose everything?

No. You can Root ltr on and not lose anything.
Rooting via CF-AUTO-ROOT via ODIN will not cause you to have to Wipe anything.
He can always back up his files every once in a while to his pc, which you would do whether you're gonna Root or not, for that 'Just in case' moment. You know, Murphy's Law
I don't do that as often as I should.
If there's a time when you have to Wipe device memory, you'd just transfer the files to the pc and/or SD card.
If everything's good to go, and you're ready to Root, But things go wrong (Murphy's Law again) and you have to wipe Internal but you didn't save the files, you'll be outta luck, but that can happen anytime. So just back up once in a while. Better safe than sorry........
What will most likely happen:
- your son will dl files, games, etc.
- later on, days, weeks, months, he'll want to Root
- you'll ODIN CF-AUTO -ROOT by Chainfire and you'll be good to go.
- after installing Recovery and TiBu, you'll back up the data on the device, and that's it.
OK... That's exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks so much!
Alrighty so, Odin is the program I will use to access the adb commands on the pc, correct? And I get that from where?

The CF-AUTO-ROOT link is posted previously. You install with ODIN.
I'll get you a link to ODIN so you can see what it's about.
You dl ODIN on your pc. You need drivers installed on your pc to recognize your S4.
You put tar files in the appropriate ODIN boxes
Tar files can be extracted from zip files.
You have to follow ODIN instructions exactly.
I'm briefly going through the basics as you really need to read the associated threads so you get an idea how the process works, then you'll probably have some questions which we can answer.
I'm not sure if CWM Recovery is installed via ODIN.
TWRP is. I use Version 2.5.0.2. But you can use CWM. There's a thread to show you howttoiinstall.
Root with CF-AUTO-ROOT via ODIN 3.07
Install Recovery (method depends on choice of Recovery)
Make a Nandroid backup
Then you can install, flash, etc. etc.....
Ok so he decided it was easy and quick enough to let me do it now. I'm following the thread instructions. I have the cf root and odin files. I run odin, check pda and pick the cf root file. I turn off phone, go into download mode and get the green android that says downloading do not turn off target. Now what?

You're doing it backwards.
Open up ODIN
After you have s4 in dl mode
Plug into usb on pc
Wait for phone to be recognized via COM Port
THEN put tar files in PDA slot and check appropriate boxes
AsiI explained previously, learning the process is extremely important, and without being there, so to speak, things can go wrong, Fast....
It found the phone, said had the samsung drivers then nothing. It's not showing up under ID:COM and I still have my little green friend again.

Is the COM Port showing
COM 1 or another number and showing in Blue or Green
No
Its not the usb port, I don't think anyway. Mouse works in both.
Of course I am on a crappy vista laptop... Think I'd have better luck using the xp desktop?
