Is there a way for cwm to boot into external SD card? Coming from HTC amaze it was one of the options.
Also, hard boot into recovery via battery removal it's so painful - holding 3 buttons and inserting the battery at the same time is a challenge. Is there another way?

Rom manager has a reboot recovery option. Yoibcoild use adb reboot recovery. There are lots of other ways.

There's no need to insert the battery at the same time. Do that first. You can even put the battery cover on. Then when you're ready hold power, volume up, and home button at the same time. If you wanted you can even hold home and volume up before pressing power.

What about changing cwm so that when we boot into recovery you can flash from your external SD card?

This works fine under normal boot into recovery, but I just use quick boot app from market for that. The problem is when I flash a different rom for instance and forget to flash the matching kernel. The only way to get back is to remove battery trick, which is not easy.

Adb will still work.
Edit: If your gonna mess around in any way with your Android device, you should really learn adb before hand.

Tried that but no dice - no device was recognized, battery trick was the only way.

I did do a search, I couldn't find anything directly related to my problem as it's not how to fix the phone, but how to recover my data in this specific situation.
Alright, so I went to Dublin, got absolutely smashed, and dropped my new One X in the toilet. It's working fine - turns on, buttons light up, goes to what seems like sleep mode and waking up when I use the volume buttons, all seems okay except my display is ****ed - black, sometimes with streaks of visibility but nowhere near enough to see what's going on. No touch either.
No-one will touch it and I don't care so much about the phone, I just want all the pictures I took from my drunken holidays. As HTC so intelligently decided on internal storage instead of SD cards I'm a bit at a loss here. I can connect my phone to the PC, but the default behaviour is 'charge'. With the update that came out a while ago it defaults to USB storage when plugged in (or so HTC customer service says) but I rooted it and ran CM10.
What I need is a way to force USB storage through the PC, or a way to do a full backup of the phone without having to turn storage on. I'm not sure if this is possible? I'd appreciate some help here!
(It's dry now, was about two months ago, also I don't need advice on how to get it fixed, I'm not interested in paying for this as I'm going to give it away for spare parts and buy a waterproof phone)
Thanks in advance guys!
How about usb-debugging, enabled or not?
Are you currently on CM10?

Oop's that sounds bad but I'd be happy to help you to get your photos off. Firstly have you rooted yet? If so you could get it into recovery mode and with help from a friend or another phone then you could activate the usb mode. Also I'd be happy to take it off you for spares as I have two hox's in my house.

USB debugging.. I'm not quite sure. I think it was on. I am on CM10 but as I said, can't see or use the display at all..

I've already promised it to a friend of mine - I am rooted, running CM10 but even if I get it into recovery I've no idea what I'm doing as the screen is completely black so it doesn't really help. How could another phone help me, I don't know anyone with a smartphone as we're all insanely good at drowning them in alcohol.
Can you confirm that you have clockworkmod installed?
I will soon return with directions on how to mount USB storage using only volume and power buttons.

I do yeah! Thank you
Okay, here's a little guide:
Hold power and volume down for 25 seconds. Do not let go even if it vibrates.
1xvoldown
1xpower
Wait 20 seconds
Connect USB to PC.
5xvoldown
1xpower
8xvoldown
1xpower
The sdcard contents should pop up on pc. If not, reboot and do it all over again.

Just to make sure, I don't hold power, just one press, then wait 20 sec, yeah? And I disconnect it first. ..Annoying, it ran out of bettery. I'll let it charge a while then try it out and return to the thread. Thanks a lot

Correct, begin the process disconnected. Only hold in the beginning, all the other steps are single taps.

Another thing, now we're at it, do you know where my contacts are stored by any chance.

Have you checked if they are on your sim card? They might also be synced to your google account.
The only thing I know is that they are not on the sdcard. They are probably stored somewhere in /system/.
It could be possible to retrieve them through shell commands, provided that your phone has usb-debugging enabled.
Imma do some research and let you know if I find anything useful.
In the meantime, leave the handset to a bag/box of rice for the night. I have once recovered a dead display by doing that.

They aren't synced to google, only my old contacts, and they're not on my sim, that's the first thing I checked of course.
I did find com.android.contacts folder, but it's empty, or hidden system files. Thanks a lot. You are BRILLIANT.
Really.. I'll give it a shot, it's been a couple months though so I doubt there's any pee left in it.
I did find out that /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/
has some info, but I believe that it contains only the entries that are already synced to google. Not very useful.
Oh well. I'll try again tomorrow.
If any of my dear colleagues knows something about this, please drop in.

The home buttons ribbon is completely severed. I'd rather like to avoid spending the money to buy a new one. I'm assuming the easiest way to get around it is the adb, but it won't recognize the device.

Is there a difference between the jigs? I can't seem to find one specifically for the Note 2, or does it matter?
It shouldn't matter. .I had one and jigged a handful of samsung. .none of the same one..worked in all of them lol

Alright, well it seems like a better deal than a 20 dollar part, and a hell of a lot of work to replace the home button flex ribbon, I'll give it a try. Thanks

so i had a gnex with a busted usb port. i was using my moms gnex battery in the meantime to send a few important tests before i went off the air, and then i got a HTC One (which is awesome btw) to replace it, but when i got the usb pcb to replace the busted one, i replaced it all and triple checked all connections before putting phone back together.
Basically the problem is this. power button wont do anything. the battery i have i know has a 50% charge on it. I tried the pull battery put in usb put in battery trick and that gets me to the charging logo for about 15 seconds and then the phone turns off.
Do i have a bricked phone?
any ideas?

I had this problem on OnePlus phone. For me I finally discovered that I had a bank card in the folding cover and every time I bent the cover back and over the camera or scanner it was reading the chip on the card. Moved the card down the case and the problem was solved. Hope this helps
