I picked up a wireless charger the other day and when I used it I noticed my phone was pretty hot after. Hotter than normal USB charging. I went to read the manual that came with it and it said the maximum input voltage was 5v and I was using a wall USB outlet that outputs 1000mA which is about 9v , I know that's bad but would have damaged my phone at all or only my wireless charger??

Neither.
A wireless Qi charger will be warmer overall than corded charging, it's nothing to worry about (try playing a graphically intense game for an hour on the Nexus 5, that's heat).
When the charger says it will take 5V input, that is how much it will draw. For example, if an adapter outputs 12V, that's how much it can provide, NOT how much it is forcing in to a device. So the Qi charger is drawing 5V out of the 9V your USB wall charger can provide. The other 4V aren't utilized.
Same concept for example on a desktop computer. If you have a 1000W power supply and your computer is in sleep mode, you power supply is not shoving 1000W forcefully through the computer. So your computer is using like 100W and the remaining is available when needed but not active.

The voltage has to be correct. Always!!!
The max current of the power supply can be higher than the rating on the device.
For example your original charger says 5V 1A. You can use a charger with 5V and 3A. Your device will draw only as much current as necessary.
But the voltage always has to be correct.
In case of the qi charger:
If you power the qi charger with 9V instead of 5V you could kill the charger, but not the telephone.

How did you get 9v? In North America mains outlets provide about 120v and in Europe they output about 230v. That being said, I would think that the ac adapter that came with the charger would reduce the voltage to within the needed range (~5v). I'm no electrical engineer though, so someone correct me if I'm wrong...

That's what I meant, my wording was just incorrect. His USB wall adapter was not forcing a higher voltage, but providing more available power if necessary.

Do u mean, you are giving the Galaxy Note an input of 5V, 2.1A (ie, output of Portable Charger)? if so, it is going to effect the battery life in long run..it may charge your phone faster, but definitely going to hurt the life of the battery..there are a lot of factors which should be considered like how much extra current you can give, temperature etc etc..

The Note will draw only ~700mA on an "AC" charger, even if that charger can supply up to 1A, 2A, etc.
On USB, it will draw ~500mA.
A mains/AC charger shorts the 2 data pins, which tells the phone that it's a dumb charger, not a USB host, and it is safe for the device to draw up to its own maximum (700mA for the Note).

yes, though AFAIK the Note will draw more than 700mA from the OEM charger
and I have noticed charging speed differences by using different aftermarket chargers... never put a multimeter to them though
while charging the battery in the note is safe, I don't recommend plugging in your portable charger into a external battery charger. They may not protect the battery from overcurrent. Pay attention to all the specifications of all charging devices you use. Especially if you also have an aftermarket battery.

I have used many, many USB chargers: mains/AC, 12V, solar, portable battery, and never seen greater than ~700mA being drawn by the Note.
I'd like to know otherwise, for the odd occasion when i might want a really quick charge!
My friends point was that the i-sound charger would hurt not so much the battery but might damage the charging circuitry in the phone...course I learn this after buying this charger! ( I know its fine for nexus 7 and 10.1 tab).

Yup, and I believe the answer is no: you cannot damage the Note's charging circuit by using a charger that has a higher *maximum* current, since the Note will only draw a current of (approx) 700mA regardless of the charger's maximum.
As an example of that, my test showing that the Note still only draws 725mA when connect to the Nexus 7 charger, which has a maximum charging current of 2A.

There was a mid on this site a really long time ago showing how shorting a specific connection in the usb cable will enable ac mode and this is supposedly what the oem charger does

yup, that's right: shorting the two data pins --- which most "dumb-charger spec" capable chargers do --- tells the Note that it's OK to pull its maximum ~700mA. But it won't pull any more than that even if it's a 2A charger.
Without that short, the Note will only pull the regular ~500mA (again, regardless of charger max current): it thinks it is connected to a standard USB host, which might not be able to supply > 500mA, e.g. a laptop motherboard.
If you have a >500mA charger that *doesn't* follow the dumb-charger spec, i.e. it doesn't short the data pins, e.g. possibly a Mac USB charger, then you can get a charge-only no-data USB cable, that has the data pins shorted internally (in the cable itself), which will achieve the same effect. This is the mod you describe above.
You probably should not use that cable with a regular USB host (although the host will probably just limit its current anyway).
[Macs use some proprietary "signalling" method, whereby differing value resistors are placed across the data pins, telling the device differing levels of current to pull, etc. This is why you'll see external battery packs like Anker Astro 3 having a "Samsung port" and also a "iPad port"; madness]
Finally, some Android kernels have a hack that will allow AC mode (e.g. 700mA on the Note) regardless of the data pins. But this isn't always wise, and so many devs won't touch it. It prob wouldn't bother the Note, but it might not be good for the host/charger.
Apologies for rambling on, but people seem to ask this sort of thing a lot...

I believe that's correct; I would not hesitate to use it.
As someone else stated, however: whilst charging in the phone should be safe, since the phone controls the current, taking the battery out and charging it in a standalone battery charger may not be safe.

Yes, that's correct. Generally, just make sure the voltage is not too high (or too low). The range of 4.7V to 5V should be OK, since there is some allowance for variations. The current ( ie, the Amperes) only indicates the current the charger is capable of supplying. It doesn't mean the charger will force all that current down the battery's throat. The device/battery will draw as much as it needs, and this will not damage the device or battery whether it's 0.5A or 2A.
Can someone tell me why is it that when i charge my phone when USB connected to PC its takes hours together to charge and Wall Charger takes 1/4th of that time why is that can anybody tell me what is the login behind it and which is best way to charge ?
USB only outputs 5v, which is why it takes makes longer. You have more power outputted from the ac adapter therefore it charges quicker. Simple as that. They will both eventually charge the device, but it's recommended you use the wall charger all it's faster, no one likes to wait

Technically, voltage has little to do with charging. The amperage is what counts. USB on a computer gives ~500 milliamp, where ac chargers give 1-2 amps

All compatible chargers output the same voltage, 5 volts. (Otherwise they just would burn out the charging circuits in the phone. It can happen both if there's too much volts and if there's too little, but for very different reasons.) However, voltage is not the only characteristic of electricity, the other most important is current, that is, amperes. Think of volts as 'water pressure' and amperes as 'amount of water pumped per minute' through a water pipe -- with real water, those are connected, with electricity they're quite separate.
Every source of stabilized electricity you will find in any kind of power supply will have a set voltage it outputs electricity at, and maximum current it can output. Trying to draw more current than it can supply can damage the power supply, so your phone limits the current it attempts to draw when it detects a standard USB port -- to what the USB standard says it should be able to safely supply. For standard ports, it's 500mA. Galaxy Note II by default plays it safe and draws 425mA. The stock AC charger is rated at 2000mA, and Note draws 1700mA when it detects one. This specifically affects the speed of charging -- AC chargers will charge battery faster, because three times more power gets in.
The USB standard was written before everyone and their mother started using it as a charger, and today, USB ports can usually handle more than 425mA, and on some computers they can supply just as much power as the stock AC charger. There are a few standard ways to detect how much current can a phone safely draw from an USB socket, but not all of them are universally accepted or correctly implemented, so the phone always plays it safe when it can't be sure. If you install a custom kernel, you can directly tell it how much power to draw if you know your USB port can handle it.

You can use the app Galaxy Charging Current (GCC) from the S3 thread which can measure the output of the incoming current. It will also allow you to detect faulty cables and chargers, as you will be able to see different ratings with different cables and chargers.
Testing on typical USB ports will get you a reading of 460, while the original charger and a good cable will give you 1800 (about the max current draw for the Note 2).
If you use a known good charger and get a lousy reading, it indicates a bad cable. I once had a cable give a readout of 100. I promptly threw it away.

I am trying to figure out which is the fastest charger, wired or wireless for the Nexus 5. To do this, I suggest we gather measurements about the charging speed for the phone charging when it has less than 75% charge.
My results are the following so far:
T-Mobile dual usb wall charger 700-800 mA
this ebay Qi charger [1] 200-300 mA

Note that the T-mobile dual USB charger was the power source when using the Qi charger and the same microUSB cable was used in both cases.

The one that outputs more mah will charge faster.

They're both awful outputs u need at least 1000 mA / 1A output. You can damage the battery with underpowered charge rates

Guys, for the wired chargers, we are not talking about the STATED MAXIMUM OUTPUT here, we are talking about the output IN PRACTICE. Most chargers are rated for instantaneous output (it can output 1A or 2A or whatever is listed on the charger, but only for a millisecond, then the rate will fall off).
Please use the app and let me know what your rates for wired charging are (not that the rates fall off when the device is charged more than 75%, so try to test when the charge is lower than that). I bet the rate you find will be lower than 800mA, but if this is not the case, I am curous on the charger and cable that you use.
As for the wireless charger, I know it is very very bad, am trying to return it.
A poor/cheap usb cable will make a massive difference too. I once had a cable that wouldn't let more than 384mA through it!

Exactly! This is why I picked the cable I am using now, but I could not get over 900mA with this combination of cable + charger. The Charger is a T-mobile dual USB 3A charger and in my opinion it is very good.
The stock wired charger is rated for 1.2A and actually charges at just over 1 A. The charging chipset in the phone limits charging to 1.5 A max.
The nexus wireless charger charges at 750 mA max. Bad positioning and cases will reduce wireless charging efficiency though.

I've noticed that during wireless charging my phone will charge at 500-600mA up until 85-87% and after that it will charge at 300mA to 100%, so make sure when you are testing to test at lower battery capacity. Also, try wireless charging from a USB port of a computer, I've noticed that I got better performance form USB port than from 2A touchpad charger.

Wired charging is always going to be faster than wireless charging. Wireless charging on the Nexus 4 Orb takes about twice as long as charging via the supplied wired charger with the Nexus 5. Technology is going to have to advance quite a bit before wireless charging eclipses wired charging. There is an inherent inefficiency with wireless charging that wired charging does not have.

Ordered a QI charger off Amazon (the same Lerway Chinese brand one everyone seems to get) and it's charging incredibly slow. Not sure if the app I'm using to record the charge rate is incorrect or I'm not reading it correctly but it says it's charging at only +200mA max sometimes as slow as <50mA.
Anyone else experience this?

What kind of power source you use to power the charger and what kind of cable do you use?
If you connect the charger to computer USB port it will not provide enough power for the charger. Same with cheap cables, like the ones mostly included with the generic QI chargers. You need a premium USB cable.
Also if you have a thick case on your phone it will diminish the charging current received by a coil in your phone.
Firstly check how much power and what current your charger gets, so instead of plugging the QI charger, plug your phone and check what amperage you get (I use Current Widget). If it's less then 1600mA (maximum amperage that N5 will allow from direct charging through cable) your charger is underpowered and you need to change socket charger to 2A one. If you're using 2A socket charger and still get under 1600mA then your micro USB cable isn't good enough.
Properly and fully powered Qi charger should charge your bare phone (without a case) at about 700-800mA.

Thanks for the info I thought I was going crazy.
No case so that isn't an issue.
I have the phone connected direct to a 3A charger currently and am only getting 995mA charge rate with the screen on and it looks like full 1.5A with the screen off. Maybe a defective QI charger?
Nope. Everything is normal. You just need a better cable that will manage to transfer 2A of current.
QI charger needs 2A input to give 1A output on a coil. Giving about 70-80% efficiency rate, your phone would be getting about 700-800mA.
Since your charger gets only about 1A input it gives about 500mA output. Therefore giving that efficiency rate, your phone should be getting about 350-400mA tops. It is possible that your charger has lower efficiency rate (some have about 50-60%), so the values that you're getting are pretty normal unless you use a premium micro usb cable, preferably with thicker, like AWG24 or lower (the lower value the better) power wires.
Might want to try these cables, a lot of people have had great luck with using them on Qi chargers. Don't know which length you would need, they have 3 and 6 foot cables. For the price, I'm ordering 6 6ft cables.

I have several power banks, each with different capacity.
I've noticed that when I connect my nexus to a 1A port, it says "charging (ac)",
but when I connect to the 2A port, it says "charging (usb)".
The usb charging (2A) is slower than the 1A charging.
Though I can understand why usb charging is slower than AC charging,
I don't understand why EVERY 2A charger has to be a usb charger?

On my Anker it is AC. It has a total 3A output, with the N5 using approx 1-2A I think. Check your charging cable quality, it does matter on power banks!

That means that your power banks are all designed for Android phones on the 1A port and iDevices on the 2A port. Basically, iDevice chargers put a voltage across the data pins to tell the device what rate the charger supports, while all other devices just short the data pins. You can get a charge only cable to get around this:

Well, it's not a hard and fast rule. Some Android tablets will only charge off the 2A port even though that's the Apple standard. The manual for the battery itself says "refer to your device's manual to determine the proper port" which is a bunch of BS. When that battery pack first came out most Android phones still came with a 0.8A-1.0A charger, and the iPad and other tablets were the only devices that needed higher powered chargers. The newer models of it (http://www.ianker.com/product/A1208011) use the "smart ports" that will charge any device on either port at their maximum rate.
