has anyone extended their battery life on their rooted S3? if so, how?

wow thats a lot on battery.. are you sure when you say 50%?
What do you mean extend your battery? Do you mean so that it lasts longer?
It depends on what apps and settings you have running on your phone. Things tend to fluctuate for me daily. There's some tips you can do to make things better:
- I tend to disable location (tends to dramatically improve things for me).
- I don't use Google Now, turned that off while I can still use Google Search. Doesn't drain the battery as much.
- Monitor and see which apps are using the battery. There's a bunch of various apps that can give you more information and to diagnose things.
- Check your Account "sync" settings and turn off anything you don't need/use.

But i dont like the 3 soft keys at the bottom of CM. Is there any way to delete them? Its really stupid and unnecessary.
Really? When I installed CM 10.2, I didn't get any soft keys. It's really unnecessary, unless your capacitive keys/button don't work.

what do u mean by "Try to change that annoying 3 buttons in settings > interface"... do you mean that its difficult to remove those 3 sodt keys?
No, it's simple if you have hardware buttons and don't want soft buttons, just try to search in settings or search in CyanogenMod support on their official site.
i see. i'll try that. its just that theyre so annoying. i dont understand how ppl can stand those buttons at the bottom of their screen knowing that they take up vital screen space.. very weird.

You can make the argument that the Galaxy S3's screen is TOO big, and that having those buttons wouldn't really matter.
Personally, I just upgraded from a myTouch 4G, which has a 3.8 inch display. That phone was much easier to use with one hand and a whole inch really makes a difference. I find that I have too much room on my S3.
Regarding your original questions, I do a couple things to extend my battery life:
- Keep the brightness ALL the way down when I'm inside. The display is probably the most battery sucking component.
- I use Tasker and it that knows when to turn my wifi on when I'm at home, or turn auto brightness on when a certain light level is met. Stuff like that.
- Use Greenify to hibernate most of my apps when I'm not actively using them.

but having a larger screen does matter, otherwise there wouldnt be such a big demand for larger phones to type and see videos and stuff with greater ease. so having those annoying buttons is completely unnecessary as any S3 user with a history of previously owned smaller screened phones can attest. matter of fact i'm thinking of buying a note 3 or wait for the S5 which will have a 5.25 inch screen.
i'm not yet rooted but will be soon. i never get round to do it. but its a nust and on my to do list. i want to greenify my phone to freeze apps from sucking out more battery and memory than is needed. after i root my phone i'll try out CM 10.2 as long as those stupid soft buttons arent in the way. the dev that created CM 10.2 must be really ignorant not to have eliminated them or at least given the option to remove them.

Those buttons AREN'T there in CM 10.2 for the S3 (I'm using the stable version), so don't worry.

The application does the following:
1. When your phone receives a notification, it switches the screen on and displays a notification. The notification bounces around every 3 seconds. This will guarantee using different LEDs so that the same ones won't be burned out.
2. You can customize whether to have a dot or an icon for each type of supported notification. Users may also customize the colors of these icons/dots.
3. NoLED will work with SMS/MMS, Gtalk, Gmail, Missed calls, Voicemail, Calendar and K-9 (email client) without any additional permissions. Any other 3rd party software (e.g. Whatsapp, Email app, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail) will need to be checked under Monitored Apps and will require granting Accessibility rights to NoLED.
4. The app runs as a service, after installing, you have two ways to activate the app. (a) by restarting. (b) by loading the widget into your home screen and clicking on it.
5. To get rid of the notification screen, you may use the home or the back key. You can enable dismissal via more keys in the Miscellaneous submenu. Once your notifications are dismissed, all notifications disappear and will not come back up.
I have also logged the touch drivers and saw that although I'm displaying a black screen and setting flags to not respond to touch messages, android is still receiving touch messages when you touch any spot on the screen. This, I imagine, consumes resources! So I disabled the touch drivers when the black screen is active. Dismissing the notifications should reactive the touch drivers. If your screen is unresponsive to touch even after the notification screen is dismissed, a simple restart should take care of it. There is also an option to completely disable that feature. The touch drivers are only disabled on the Samsung Galaxy S variants, all other devices are still receptive to touch events.
Now the touchscreen drivers were a lot easier to mess around with. The sourcecode given by samsung helped me achieve the activation/deactivation of the screen. Things are not the same with the capacitive buttons. You'll notice that when the black screen is on, if you touch any of the soft buttons, they'll light up (although am suppressing them programatically). On some other devices like the Nexus S, these backlights cannot be switched off once the screen is turned on programatically. This is a bug from Google and more info is in the FAQ.

When I used NoLED with the NS it was kind of tough on the battery. That being said, this version has been updated from the one I used so really there is only one way to find out.
I've been using NoLED since I got my s2 nearly 2 months ago. I've never had a problem and my battery life is fine, usually over 50% after a full days usage (which for me is moderate). Love it!
BTW I run cognition ROM so that helps with the battery life.

Correct, it drains like crazy. Only way to minimize the drain is to check the phone what message/call you just missed soon after it occured. When you leave it with a NoLED notification active there's a lot of drain.
So it's only handy for people who check their phones regularly.
Been using NoLED for a long time as well. Haven't noticed any excessive drain. Using official KF3 (NEE) and it lasts for two days easily with my standard use and NoLED active.
I've used NoLED on my previous phone (Samsung Galaxy Spica), and I did notice extra battery drain.
For me this is not really an alternative to BLN. OK, it does show notifications when your screen would normally be off, but NoLED still activates the whole screen, whereas BLN only lights up the 'buttons' below the screen. Somehow this has to be more energy consuming.
Hi guys.
I always feel that my display eats the most of my battery..I know what do you expect from S.AMOLED Plus displays..Gorgeous i know but eats your battery..Anyway great app on the market that i have started to use and it works wonders for me and would like to spread the word, if you don't already know about about this app..
Link is this https://market.android.com/details?id=com.haxor&hl=en
Apologies if you already have it, but i just thought if there are more people like myself who want to save a bit of juice on your battery this is a great app to use specially if your brightness is abit to much as well.
Cheers

Hi,
Battery saving - the single most important thing I learned was to turn off the internet when it's not needed. While it's on, any app can upload data or download when you're not using it. When many apps to that, it burns the battery badly. It's no joke, try it. It makes more of a difference than screen brightness. I have that at almost full and I get 2 days battery because I turn of data when not needed.
Features - The Walkman feature, look in Walkman settings, it should still be there - something like continue playback when headphones inserted. You don't see a flash line when unlocking? Mine does, that's strange.
thanks

Hello all,
As the title says, what is your opinion about Nougat? After reading so many bug related posts here and in reddit, im frustrated to update to the newest version of android. How does it compares to marsmalow in terms of battery, performance and bugs? Is it safe to update now, of do your suggest to wait a little longer for a bugfix update? And finally, if your suggest me to update, do your recomend any custom rom/ kernel?
Thanks in advance.
Fine, I love my 5X, but there are some bugs that I have:
*In Whatsapp audios or call if I put my face in the phone (or simple if I cover the distance sensor) the screen goes black and I can't turn on again...maybe if a press the power button 3 times the screen turns on. that is REALLY annoying!, I dont know if is a software problem or if my tempered glass is the real problem...
*The screen rotates very easy...sometimes I move my phone just a little and the screen rotates...
*When screen turns off it doesnt fade "slowly"...its something cosmetic but I dont like it haha

Hm, i dont use whatsapp so i dont mind if there is a bug about it. Do you have the same problem during calls too? Also, what about battery and performance?
I have these bugs:-
1. I have a problem with the battery percentage toggle, i change it to like "everytime" but sometimes it auto switches back to "only when charging", in 6.0.1 there was only an option to show percentage which worked fine.
2. I also have a problem after sep security update the swipe up from overview to open multiwindow doesnt work, it is on in the settings tho, it worked on the first 7.0 aug security one but now it doesnt.

I recently reverted back to marshmallow, I was getting horrible battery drain. Like 10℅ an hr while in my pocket. I had to leave it on battery saver mode if I wasn't going to be near a charger. But besides that it's awesome, love all the new features.

For me, unlocking the device harder. I have to swipe further in order to do it, and it also happens when I want to swipe a notification at the lock screen.
In addition Spotify song playing from google now through an Android Wear does not work unless the Nexus is unlocked.
Finally, battery life is not really god in my case.
After reading your replies, i decided to stay in marsmalow for a couple of months. Thanks everyone
It's only been a couple days for me but everything is working well on the stock OTA update so far.

If any of you clever developers / tinkerers know of a 'lite' app to use to fix the non working ambient display issues I.E. pick up to wake doesnt work, a recommendation would be soooo welcome. I looked at apps like gravity etc in the play store, but they are a. rather large and b. the permissions they require are a bit suspect. Thanks in advance
Did not know something was wrong.
So I pick it up it does not wake up, I think is a good thing. When I pick it up and I want a display, I press something and have no problem with that.
This maybe one reason the Pixel XL has an excellent battery life.
At the suggestion of another user here, I installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tomer.alwayson
It's reminiscent of Samsung's version but has a lot more customisability. There's also an option to turn of the display completely when the proximity sensor is activated. All of the permissions make perfect sense fit the features you select and it doesn't cause a terrible battery hit.

Ambient display is only meant to flash notifications on the screen in black and white for a short period then turn off. As far as I know, the pick up and bump to wake is an OEM added feature that Motorola, Samsung, and likely others added, but it isn't in stock Android.

On the Pixel XL it flashes only once which i find to be a disappointment. Also on the Nexus 6 , 6P and 5X the notification/time flashed once upon picking up or moving the phone a bit. This is not enabled on the Pixel models for some reason.

Damn !! I was going nuts trying to figure out why this phone was not acting like my Nexus 6. lol I loved the Moto display then had to end up liking the Nexus 6 version afterwards. Then this Pixel XL only flashing the notice once then never again was aggravating. and of course no good app on the play store to emulate this function with 7.1 lol
well I hope this engineering problem can be fixed with software. :silly:
I've created an app that wakes ambient display when you take the phone out of your pocket or if you have the phone face down and turn it over. The app is in addition to Google's ambient display and does not change your lock screen in anyway.
I added a few other paid features for pulsing at an interval, wave to unlock, and battery percentage display on the ambient display.
I would love to have a few beta testers for the extra features, as it's a work in progress. Message me if you'd like a free code to redeem for the paid features.
