[Q] Aldiko - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hi all, wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I use Aldiko a lot, and have it on my Note II, no problems. THe same epubs don't render correctly in Aldiko on my new 10.1-14. What appears to happen is that where there is an image in the epub, Aldiko just stops rendering the epub until it hits the end of the next image. In other words between two images there's nothing - not the images, and not the text in between either.
I am a bit puzzled as to why this would be happening on one device and not another... it means it's not the epub files themselves at least.
Has anyone else encountered this? Any thoughts?

Reading .pdf/.epub in Google Play Books?

So, I managed to come into some books from a friend. Sadly, they are all in .pdf format. What I want to do is read them on Google Play Books. As of right now, I am using Aldiko Reader (if that's how you spell it), but that thing is so slow when flipping pages, that I can't take it. I really like the Google Play books app, so any way to import these books into the app, so I can read them? Or, any suggestions on good apps for reading .epub and .pdf books?
Fabrik and Mantano.

i uploaded my pdf's to google drive downloaded adobe reader and it works well, prefer to keep them in the drive as i have 11,000 of them
I recommend to use Amazon Kindle to read PDF... :good:
Epdf is amazing! it is a pay app, but it is the only software out there besides google books that render page flipping so well.
I'd recommend Moon+.
I don't like the flipping pages in any app, (I prefer an instant page change with no animations) but I tried the Moon+ one after seeing ppl here asking about it and it seemed really nice. You can control the speed of the animation I believe.
+1 for Moon+
you currently can't import books into Google Books (boo!)
Am a medical graduate, read lots of pdf as reference, plus doing postgraduation in computer science, have programming and system designing books all in pdf. Always prefer my KINDLE DXG, else RepliGO on my NEXUS 7. RepliGO is way faster than other available options, with fast annotation, cropping feature etc. Though its a paid app
If you have multiple devices, the Fabrik cannot be beaten. There is a free and paid version. There will never be any ads on the reading view with the free version.

I tried using Fabrik the other day, and it completely crapped out on me, no pictures, no enter dividing lines, it was a bunch of jumbled text, and unable to view my larger files. I think I'll just stick to kindle.
I have tried about 5 different book readers on my nexus 7. All have been good but the nook app seems to look and work best for me with epubs. You have to move your epub files to the my documents folder with a file explorer program like ES file explorer or root explorer. But after that its great. Nice bookshelf screen and fast smooth page turn effects. Works with comic book files also. I just tried a PDF and no luck there.

I use Moon. Works well with my epubs and pdfs

I just got myself a Nexus 7 and the first thing I did was to put a lot of good 70's and 80's SF books on it and then I got myself a problem - all the apps were bad. Luckily, after ten apps I've got a Kobo and it's great! Fast, reliable, great for reading EPUB files. All the others mentioned here including Aldiko are no match for it.
I tested a lot of reader, montano is by far the best, especially for pdf because you can even crop and resize them, nice ui too

Every few days when this topic comes up :banghead: I always suggest the same app; FBReader.

Fabrik
best reader for reading epub ebooks with flip animation
aaaaah you can try "blio reader" it is a nice option, a nicely built app with flip animations and also importing the book
KINDLE
The kindle app is great. just place the pdf's epub's etc into the kindle folder and they appear in the app interface.
I still think montano reader pro is the, especially for PDF files, since 2.38 the rendering on my nexus7 is almost instantly even even with high resolution ones

[Q] Preffered ereader app?

favorite reader that can access any files on your gn2 and at least pdf and epub. I have a ton of books cause i used to have a nook tablet but now w this cell i wanna read on it too. what are you all using?
Fabrik eBook reader. It reads most formats and integrates very well with dropbox

Aldiko Book Reader is a good one. It reads epub and pdf files. Personally I use Google Books especially now that you can upload your own books. Also you can sync across multiple devices which I find handy. I can read on my Note than pick up my tablet and pick up where I left off on my Note. Only down side to Google Books is I think you have to have some sort off off data connection. I don't think it has offline reading.

Incorrect. You can read offline with Play Books.
I've always been partial to fbreader in the market. It seems to handle any format you throw at it.

Kindle for Android
Step 1. Kindle app for Android.
Step 2. Calibre. Convert anything you have into any format you wish.
Step 3. Load converted books to your phone or any other device that kindle supports. Virtually everything.
I've used Mobipocket in past, and when Kindle came out just loaded everything to my different Kindles. When I got the Note 2, I mainly used the Kindle app for the Note 2 since the screen was so great. I still use dedicated Kindle Paper White and others, but mostly end up reading on my Note 2.
I've used several other readers, but honestly, the Kindle Android app is free, works great and syncs to my other devices when I run through Amazon. Since I can also use without going through Amazon, pretty much the best of both worlds.
The key is using Calibre to manage your ebooks though. That program is absolutely incredible.

[Q] Book annotation with s pen?

In the Samsung guide to the Note 8 there is mention of an ebook reading software that allows users to annotate text using the s pen, make coloured highlights of text, etc. I don't seem to have this on my Note 8. I'm looking to be able to add handwritten notes with the s pen, not text entry annotation as in Play Books, Kindle, etc.
Any suggestions?
I have the UK Wi-Fi only Note 8.

This feature is exclusive to the "Readers Hub" App that should be installed stock on your note 8.0

OK, thanks for that.
Strange though, I don't have that app, and when I download it from the Samsung Apps store, it doesn't have that functionality. Anyone have an .apk they can share?
You can do that with... ezpdf

well that is strange, as tapping on the screen (when a book is loaded) shows a top menu with a pen icon on left clicking that brings you into pen edit /mode.
You can also try downloading readers hub guide (free) from samsung store in the readers hub and it details almost everything.

The answer was that Readers Hub works in this spen-friendly way if you are opening an Epub format book (and maybe others, not tested) but not a PDF. So EzPDF is the annotation solution for PDFs, Readers Hub for Epub.
Thanks all.

ahh Nice, Didn't knew you were trying to do a pdf. adobe's reader also allows freehand annotations to some degree I think but might be lacking in some departments.
e-book reader with SPen Support Note 2/3
I am in a similar dilemma. This is what I am expecting:
A single e-book reader like moon+ or fabrik that can read both epub and mobi files.
Reader that connects to that specific folder on my Dropbox account which has all of my book collection saved in it.
Automatically scans that Dropbox folder for all the e-books and display them neatly in a shelf of 4 to 5 thumbnails per row just as it would display books that are saved on my phone's internal memory.
Gives me an option to cherry pick a book from my bookshelf. Once selected it should then download it to my device for offline reading and sync all changes to that particular e-book file only once my device is back online (similar to Repligo PDF reader).
Since I am addicted to my SPen, I want to have a similar experience when reading an e-book like I do when reading a paper book. So I would like to be in a position wherein I can not only highlight the text but scribble my own hand written notes as I read along. I then want these notes to be permanently saved on the e-book file being read (similar to Repligo PDF reader). This was possible on Samsung's reader hub app but since that has been integrated with Samsung hub, ability to upload or read your own book saved on the device has been taken away. You can only read what you buy from their store unfortunately. Although, cloud sync was not possible with Reader's Hub too.
Is there a product in the market that meets my above expectations?

Check Mantano reader (I use premium version, though may not be exactly what you looking for)

Thanks. Mantano's UX is not really good. This app further boxes up the note taking screen thus further reducing the screen real estate. Would you know if any other e-book reader. For now I am using Mantano too and moon+ for mobi e-books.

Samsung ebooks on Nexus 7

Has anyone found a way to read/access ebooks purchased from Samsung on a Nexus 7? I have a couple of books purchased on my Galaxy 10.1 2014 edition that I would like to read on my N7. I can install Samsung Hub but it crashes won't open. I installed Readers hub, which opens briefly before it restarts the N7... I tried editing the build.prop to make it look like a galaxy s4, but no difference...
Does anyone know how to do this?

Are you happy that the embeded DRM isn't the problem? - if it is then I guess that drm removal is not an allowed topic here.
Have a look on the play store at Aldiko https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aldiko.android that software has AFAIK the longest list of supported formats. If you then look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kitapyum.mobile.android.ebook that is the Turkish (looks like it could be bilingual) Samsung ebook reader. The look and feel of the software looks very similar to Aldiko

Thanks but these books have drm and I don't know how to remove them. I can buy and convert Kindle and Google books which are accessible on pretty much any device, but I can't seem to do anything with my Samsung ebook purchases on my Note 10.1 (2014). I can't even access them on another Samsung tablet from the same family that's still current! (Note 8).
Does anyone have any ideas?

[Q] Aldiko on Tab Pro 8.4

hello, I recently upgraded from a 7.0 plus to a Tab pro 8.4. So far i really like the new tablet but I am having trouble getting aldiko (paid) to work properly. The first issue i have is that when opening a book it refuses to show pictures, the book cover, or any other graphics. I have reset the app, cleared the data, uninstalled and reinstalled the app and the problem persists. After the reinstall I also have the widget dissapearing and it refuses to come back as well. I have tried to get a hold of Aldiko support but i have yet to hear anyhting from them. Anyone have any ideas as to how this might be able to be fixed?
Thanks

I run Aldiko paid without a problem, but I only use Acrobat files (mostly created myself) and they are all stored in memory and not on the sdcard. Could either of these be the source of your problems?

I run mostly epubs and PDF files. All files are stored on internal memory. I am not rooted at this time, but thinking that might be an option.
For the widget issue somehow the app was moved to the SD card after moving that back the widget worked fine.
*Edit* I just recieved an email from Aldiko Support. It seems that some models of Samsung Devices (8.4 Pro included) have a compatibility issue with the RMSDK rendering engine.
Aldiko doesn't work for me either (Tab Pro 8.4),
I switched to "Moon+ Reader Pro", for ePub and PDF.

That's what i did also.
Cheers.
having the same issue. Typically the start of chapter page is blank, as it'll have a little graphic or whatever. everything works fine on my note2, asus transformer, etc etc
just the tab pro is being stupid
changing to a different app isn't that practical, as I pretty much rely on aldiko's ability to sync reading progress and library between devices
I had the same problem. Try moon reader. Fixed most of the issues. I use epub
