Proximity sensor and phonecalls. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Why when I press dial the screen turns off right away? The screen should only turn off when I put it next to my ear. It's very annoying when I'm dialing automated systems and need to use the keypad because if I manually turn the screen back on and then put it next to my ear to talk the screen doesn't turn off and I end up accidentally pushing buttons.
On an iphone the screen remains on and only turns of when put next to my ear, and turns right back on when pulled away from an ear. Is there a way to duplicate this behavior on GS4?

Go to settings/My device/call settings and select turn off screen during calls. That should do it.

Thanks, the screen doesn't turn off anymore but it also stays on when I put it next to my ear... I don't get why Samsung can't get a basic function like that right.

In your original post you forgot to let us know what exact rom you are using.
It would be very helpful to know that and other specifics before offering any suggestions.
Good luck!

Well, I tried this on a stock rom with the same result. Are you saying it works for you?

Download an app from the android market (its free) called AndroSensor and see if that app is saying the proximity sensor is blocked. You might have a spec of dirt causing it to always return that its blocked. Read other threads with same issue, and in the one thread, the guy at T-Mobile took a can of compressed air and blasted out the earpiece and it fixed it.

I downloaded the app and proximity sensor does not show any reading all the other functions have a graph next to them but not the sensor. Does this mean it's broken? And if it is broken does tmobile exchange the phone or do I have to send it back to Samsung?

It's definitely a hardware issue which should be covered. You just gotta make sure you get it back to stock and reset your counter with triangle away.

Agreed. Definitely hardware. Your sensor is reporting that the sensor is never covered and always open. Use that app and a test call to show the Rep at T-Mobile.

Weird problem with my phone.

No matter what ROM, I have trouble toggling the power button after a call is made or during a call. It's quite frustrating because I can't disconnect a call sometimes. Anyone came across this problem?

Hmm are you saying your phone won't turn on after a call? Can you explain what exactly your trying to do before the problem occurs
I make a call and when it's in progress, it's very hard to.turn the screen on. Maybe that's more specific.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
The screen turns off during a call when you have the phone by your face due to the proximity sensor to the left of the speaker grill. Pulling the phone away from your face should turn the screen back on automatically.

Did you figure this out?
Please provide us with more info. What other ROMs have you been running?
As a reference, have you tried to one-click odin back to stock roooted to see if the stock rom reacts the same way?
Edit: To the left of the speaker at the top of the phone, is that entire area clean and unobstructed? This is where the proximity sensor is located. Do not block that area with your finger by mistake while on the phone also. (Who knows the guy might have REALLY big hands)
theres an app in the market for adjusting the proximity delay...and putting the phone on speaker disables the sensor all together!

Screen Goes Dark During Call

Has anyone ran into issue where you make a call screen goes dark like it's supposed to however if you want to end call screen won't come back on until call ends on the other side. So if person doesn't answer I have to wait till voice mail picks up and hangs up on me after it times out.

Got a screen protect covering the proximity sensor? Yours might be too sensitive. I had the same problem with my n4. Solution was no protector or wait till dearth or whatever brand you use to not cover the sensor. That was the first and only phone I ever had that issue though.

Enter *#0*# in the keypad to open the "test menu".
Press the Sensor tile and test your proximity sensor's function bij moving a finger over it.
If it does not change value from 0 to 1 and make the screen go green, your proximity sensor is likely to be broken.
Replacing the front camera (which houses the proximity senor) will then fix your problem.

I went into store today to speak to a tech that used to work with when I was a sales rep @ sprint. He told he has seen issue a couple of times. He says when that happens its a sensor issue. More common with fones that where 1st shipped out. He could of replaced it if I wanted but he wanted to avoid giving me a refurb. He did a couple of tests and it's been working since. He suggested if it happens again to bring it back again.

phone goes completely black and locks up after calls - help

i've never seen anything like this in all my years now with android. no matter what rom i am on comletely stock or any of the custom roms when i make a phone call my phone call and the person doesn't answer my phone is black and locked up. i can't hit the power button to turn it on the only way to get my phone back is a battery pull.
basically, when i make a call i cannnot turn the screen on to hit the keypad, can't do anything. if i make a call and the person answers everything will be ok - after they hangup. i can't hangup since i can't get to my onscreen buttons to hangup.
things i've tried
stock and custom roms with no apps loaded
wiping multiple times
fixing permissions
dialer one from the market
any ideas what could be wrong? it must be a hardware problem or something.
Is your proximity sensor working correctly? Try using some of the motions in settings.

yeah, i was thinking the proximity sensor must be broken. but even if it is broken why would i not be able to hit power to turn the phone screen back on.
ive never used motions before not sure i'm doing it correctly to determine if its broke for sure

I think what he's saying is go into settings>motions and check quick glance. Then with ur screen off wave ur hand over ur prox sensor and ur screen should turn on with info about ur phone and current time and such..

yep, i'd say the proximity sensor is broken. doing this in the motion settings works fine on my brothers note 2 and will not work with mine
any idea what my options are if the prox sensor is indeed broken? i suposse the only option is to try to take it back to sprint.

[Q] Screen won't wake up during calls

Ever since I went to MC2 (rooted stock) from LP7, this has been an extremely irritating problem. Every time I make a call, either through the dialer, or through Skype, once the screen times out, it can never be woken up. That means I cannot hang up the call or use the keypad, etc.
This is outrageously annoying. I have tried changing the inactivity timeout as well as smart-stay-awake but no matter what I am stuck with this stupid problem. Has anyone else seen this and know how to fix it?
Most likely a faulty proximity sensor.

So I have the survivor case by griffin technology and it seems to block the sensor. Every time I need to make a call or answer a call I have to take the top portion off to answer or hang up the call. Is there an app to disable the sensron

Try darkening the area around the opening to the proximity sensor.
## Found this in android forums ##
Alister, what is the color(s) of your Otterbox? Mine is the grey/white, and I solved my prob, just like yours, by darkening the area just above the proximity sensor with a fine-tipped black Magic Marker pen. Additionally, you can get an app that tests all of your S4's sensors, including the proximity. Mine is called Z-Device test, and works great. Get back..

I don't have that option in the settings of CM11. In my case I can't get the screen to come BACK ON during a call when I pull it from my face. So much for using the dialpad during an automated menu call..

You can cut out or drill the case where it overhangs the sensor.
