I have the evita version on ics 4.0.4, 2.20 firmware ,please suggest me the easiest way to install custom recovery and unlock bootloader.

Use the 2.20 root method. Click the Everything Evita link in my signature, that's a compilation thread, you'll find a link to the 2.20 root method there.
PS. Questions go in the q&a section, please post in the right section in future.

I need root first so can u help me in rooting first without unlocking bootloader

No, you don't need root first. You need to unlock your bootloader using the method I previously mentioned. I did say that for a reason. Once you have an unlocked bootloader you can install a custom recovery, then you can install root or a rooted ROM.

My htc one X arrived today, a little lost so i need some help:
Install a custom rom for 4.0.4 android or go to a 4.1.1 android official rom?

Hi! You should first go to htcdev.com and unlock the bootloader. You can see a tutorial in the development forums.
Good luck and enjoy your one X!
Just a warning unlocking the bootloader will void warranty.

I've recently made the switch from a HTC Desire to a HTC One V. I don't mind the stock ROM, but the battery life sucks... Looking around, i see the bootloader unlocks easily, and rooting can be done easy, but I always thought without s-off, we couldnt change the ROM?
Anyway, i'm itching to find out what is doable here, and you guys are the experts... Fill me in will ya?
After unlocking the bootloader and rooting, you can install any ROM and any Kernel you'd like as long as it's compatible with the ROM you're planning to use. We have a variety of awesome ROMs including Sense ROMs if you like Sense or Vanilla ICS/JB if you like that, too. SuPrimo and myOneV are Sense ROMs and CyanogenMod 9 is stock ICS and CyanogenMod 10 is stock Jelly Bean. Go ahead and pick your poison.

As we don't have s-off till now hence you have to flash kernels through fastboot and after that you can flash roms(compatible with flashed kernel) via recovery.....

I am now on jb 4.1.1 stock ROM , I want to root the phone to use the game boost app , I will still use stock ROM , kernel and recovery .
What will happen if there is a new update let's say 4.1.2 , what will have to do to update , by the phone it self or by flashing the update package , I think after I update I will lost the root and will have to reroot ??
I have no idea how HTC devices work ( root process ) since I came for Samsung which were very simple , so answer if you know anything

I was wondering that if I put an American based Rom on my phone (reason is because that's the only working Rom I have right now), and if I re-locked my bootloader so my phone doesn't go into custom recovery, if I did that with the American Rom on there, would it reset my phone back to UK stock or just reset the American Rom back to default? Thanks

Which american based ROM are you talking about ?. I think you need to wait for answers and read a lot of threads before attempting anything. Are you doing this to a one x international ?
