Any gingerbread ROM would work

I still flash using recovery and sdcard tho right? Not fastboot or whatever?
Yes you need to flash a custom rom from sd card, but you can remove it afterwards and see if it still works. Your results will vary depending on the rom.
However I don't recommend selling it with a custom rom unless the buyer knows what they're doing. Also if the rom requires an an sdcard partition and buyer has clue they may blame you. Better to flash stock 2.3.3 RUU and let them root etc if they want to.
Either way, you might as well buy an sd card as they should be very cheap and the phone is useless without it, partition it for them if necessary
Just install the stable CM7.2, delete the superuser and that's it. I think.. )

Hi!
I'm gonna follow the tut on MoDaCo called "14/Jun r6 riskfreeroot - HTC Desire rooting guide - now with HBOOT 0.80 and OS to 1.21 support"
However, when I have done that, I end up with a generic rom.. right?
So how would I get a custom ROM on my phone? I'm really now on this area and I've only had my Desire for two weeks now, but root access is already itching Anyway, what would some must-be things to do, after root?
Regards
Jacob
The simplest way is to use ROM Manager from the Market and use option to flash ROM from SD card after you heve rooted your phone using Paul's method.

Oh, I thought it was harder to flash a custom ROM, isn't it impossible to do it while the phone is booted? I thought that /system access wasn't possible when the phone was booted...
Basically, once you are rooted you can download rom manager from the market. Find yourself a rom that you like from the dev section and download it then put it on your SD card,
Go into rom manager and select the option to install a rom from SD card. Scroll to it and select it. The rom manager app will then boot your phone into recovery mode and install the rom for you. It's all very very easy now! I'd just suggest that you use the rom backup feature in it as some roms don't always work or you may forget to wipe before install etc. The backup is a nice fallback
Made a root stock restore! anyway what else should I do with my phone now, when it's rooted?
EDIT: Also how do I make my MicroSD compatibly with Apps2SD?

You need to create an 'ext' partition on the card. Normally 512mb. You do this via rom manager or recovery.
You will also need to install the Apps2SD zip ONLY if the rom you have currently flashed comes without Apps2SD installed into the rom.

You cannot run any EXT partitions on FroYo.

I want to root my desire with riskfreeroot but I have some doubts. Do I still need a pc to root or can I put the updatef.zip with the test image and load them with the bootloader?

You can run the RUU from your PC while the phone is connected and then flash your chosen ROM without connecting to the PC via USB (safer) using ROM Manager.
Basically, once you are rooted you can download ROM Manager from the Marketplace. Find yourself a custom ROM that you like from the Android Development section and download it, then put it on the root of your SD card.
Open up ROM Manager and select the option to install a ROM from SD card. Scroll to it and select it. The ROM Manager app will then boot your phone into recovery mode and install the rom for you.
I'd just suggest that you use the ROM backup feature in it also incase something goes wrong, e.g. ROMs don't always work or you may forget to wipe before install, or forget to partition your SD Card (if necessary) for example.
help my g2 is stuck at the htc screen. i perm rooted it with s off and tried to overclock it. i went into clockwork mod recovery and installed the zip files g2 fast? now when i turn it on it goesd to htc screen and then it reboots at htc screen and reeats.
so you flashed a kernel? Was that kernel compatible with whatever rom you are using? Did you take a nandroid backup before hand?
no i didnt backup, i thought i did but apparently i didint.
He's right, that kernel is not compatible with the stock ROM. The best thing to do now is to take out the sd card and put it in a card reader. You just need to download a custom ROM to it so you can flash it. I think if you try to do a factory reset your phone will lose root, but I could be wrong. If you want to return to a stock ROM, search the forums. There are stock ROMs that have been "rooted" so to say. This may have been a blessing in disguise because custom ROMs blow away stock!
ok and how would i do this? i did a factory reset and everything. i think its rooted cause it has the clockwork mod recovery. should i try returning it?

Do you know how to take out the sd card? Also, do you have a card reader on your computer?
yes and i dont have a card reader but i can mount the sd card to the computer.
You don't even have to do that. All you have to do is boot into recovery. Mount the SD card and copy over a kernel that is compatible with the stock rom. Then flash the new kernel and you're all set. I'm sure the stock kernel is floating around here some where.

That's great!...didn't know you could access the sd card like that. He's right too. All you need to do is flash a kernel that is compatible with the stock ROM.
I think this one will allow you to overclock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834565
okay, i already tried to find the stock kernel but i couldnt find it. even so i wouldnt know how to flash it.

You do it the same way you did the g2 fast kernel.
install the zip? where do i find the stock rom or whatever?
Well you're going to have to use the search button for that one. Check the G2 sticky thread. You need either a stock kernel or stock rom compatible kernel. You could also skip this whole endeavor and just flash the latest CM7 rom from recovery. If you do flash a new rom then it is highly recommended to do a data wipe meaning anything you had done on the phone will be cleared.
found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042
im installing it at the moment i type. we'll see what happens.
it worked! thanks alot guys. i just wish i didnt do the factory reset. also would the phone still be rooted?
Yes, and if/when you decide to flash a custom rom, find out if it has an oc kernel included. CM roms are using pershoots 1.5Ghz UV kernels currently. If you want to use G2fast, you will need to flash that kernel after the rom, and slowly clock up to see how far you can run stable. I advise paying for SetCPU to monitor your OC as well.
HTC Vision 1.8 OC, CM7 RC1==HAPPY!!
When I have Rooted my HTC Desire and I am ready to Flash a new ROM I see I have to Back Up my original ROM to the Root of an SD Card and Download the new Rom to here also. Can I do this on my Original SD Card or do I need to purchase a new one. Chris
You should do that on your SD card and then put it on your computer

No you do not. Your backup will be named differently.
Make sure you do you wipes of caches, and Delvik cache (advanced) before flashing.
Also, it is wise to install Rom Manager, and flash your recovery before you flash your new ROM.
Oh, and seeings you have a Desire, it is advisable to make a Gold Card of your sd in case you wish to go back to stock, or problems arise. Do this first before flashing.
Do NOT install the piece of crap that is ROM Manager. It's a waste of time.
Learn to use the custom recovery properly (be it CWM or AmonRA) and you'll find it simple as anything

I see somebody has had some bad experiences.
Personally, I use it to flash my recovery. As for a ROM, I always copy directly to the SD.
But, everybody is entitled to their opinion. And in this forum, there are LOTS of them
like everyone else, i think its time to sell the phone off, even though i really dont want to.
just wondering what steps to take to clear the device, and make sure its safe to sell?
- flash stock rooted rom
- not selling sd card with phone so i dont have to worry about that
- any internal ## codes i need to do to access internal information for wiping?
thanks
Nope. Just flash a Rom to it or back to stock. No data or anything aside from sd card survives a complete wipe

make sure it has the stock bootloader, stock recovery, and the stock ruu, and you will have no trace except apps you downloaded in your google account, and you SD card.

pretty much what he says, by the way; IS there a most recent stock rom out there? Since SENSE was just crap for me I never cared to mess with it, but would like to give it a shot
thanks guise!!
So I've successfully rooted my Gio, installed clockworkmod and CyanogenMod 9 (thanks to this site ^^). But there are now 3 .zip files on my memory stick, is it safe to delete those files? My phone won't brick, right?
From my experience as long as you have clockworkmod installed and a way to put roms on the sd card in case you format it , you can`t brick it because you can always restore a nandroid or flash a new rom. But i`m not 100% sure it`s just from experience.
It is safe, but I recommend you to keep one ROM on SD just in case something goes wrong and you need to reflash the rom.

Yep he is right. When you flash a new rom and its not booting you need another rom to flash. I have at least 6 roms on my sd because i like to change and test and compare roms. My sdcard has 8 gb and i have 4 gb left.
