As of December 19th 2013, what's a solution to watch youtube videos in 1080p on our s4 ? Every or mod i've tried can only play them in 720p? I've used many apps and mods, but they all only playback at 720p?

Thanks, but that mod doesn't work. I get "No 1080p stream found" , that is on clips that i have posted in 1080p on youtube. No videos will come out in 1080p , all 720p max. And that is with all the settings on, HD playback over wifi, 3G/4G hd playback , 1080p playback.
You sure that mod still plays 1080p even after the changes they made to 1080p streams on their site?

Ahh youre right. I forgot to tick my "1080p" option under advanced options. So far from what the guy who made that mod told me is that google broke it and its not fixable. Guess we shall just live with 720 lol

Sorry
Sorry if this is already posted before..

Hi,
this is most probably about the encoding. Bandwitdh, compression profile, etc.
I dont have any problem to view 720p through uPnP on a stock 800MHz. Those videos are "selfmade" with a bandwidth of 2, maybe 3 MBit. I doubt it will play professional 720p videos like high quality TV recordings. Those might reach a bandwidth of 12 or more Mbit.
Didnt test it, since i am still watching SD television.

Have you tried QQPlayer?
Yes, i've tried almost all of them, i've currently mx player, bsplayer.... can u guys try the same with "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hPpG4s3-O4" witch is the avenger 2012 trailer, i've dowloaded it in 1080p....
I don't think SGW supports 1080p videos. I personally haven't tried yet, but downloading 720p and playing them on my phone works perfectly fine for me, thus I haven't tried the highest resolution. But I don't think our phone supports it.

OK, that's what i think to, 720P is awesome i know, but 1080p won't.
Thanks for your answer.
OK, tried this with Dice Player!!!!
Downloaded 1080p with TubeMate.....very good App, allows You Tube d/l, at all resolutions from 1920 x 1080 [Galaxy Tab, PC] to all other.
No workee!!!
Dice Player crashes...
so Wonder does not support 1080p!!!!

I use Tubemate to download videos too! A very good app (though I'm having difficulties on playing videos from it).
Perhaps that's why Tubemate stated that the highest resolution video for mobile phones are only for high resolution devices. So perhaps SGW isn't one of them.

Erm... This problem goes down to the chipset. The MSM8255T was never designed to handle 1080p. Adreno 205 cannot handle encoding and decoding of 1080p video. This makes it totally impossible for hardware decoding. You can only do it by software decoding (Untick hardware decoding, I called it software decoding since I don't know what other term should I use). Yet, our processor is not powerful enough to do the software decoding. I tried with VPlayer, 1080p does play but with laggggggggggggging video, audio is fine though.
EXTRA: For your information, Samsung Exynos chipset used in Galaxy S/Nexus S (means the phone earlier than ours, perhaps also an older chipset than ours, never verified this though) with the SGX540 GPU is designed to handle 1080p en/decoding. I'm not sure whether it works in Galaxy S or Nexus S but it's possible since their hardware is designed for that.
I did the reading quite sometime ago because I found out P1000 (Old Galaxy Tab) can handle 1080p with similar chipset (as Galaxy S/Nexus S). Just to help out a little bit =)
@FutureGamerz: a very interesting explanation! You have my thanks for that.

Thanks for all your response guys, but it would be nice for some kind of trick to enable hardware decoding, some kind of force script to enable always hardware decoder.
So I was googling this stuff and I came across a pretty great media player, it is called BS PLAYER
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free&hl=en
I also installed the CPU Support
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...tLmJzcGxheWVyLmJzcGxheWVyYW4uY3B1LmFybXY3diJd
I transferred a 3.3GB .mkv file and it plays perfectly fine at 24 fps, smooth as a whistle, the video only lags when you have the GUI up, once it goes away the video goes back to being 4.8" of HD GOODNESS.
Enjoy. :]
Stock player plays mkv perfectly fine. As for third party MX Player takes the cake.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
It does however with a file that has a DTS audio track, the stock player does not decode the sound so you get no audio
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Yeah the stock player has worked fine for me directly from the gallery. I was worried about loading .mkv files onto my phone but I figured I would just put them there and wait for VLC to hit a stable release but when I tried it on a whim it was butter smooth playback. (Note, the first time I tried this I was using the TuchMi 5.0 ROM with faux123's kernel overclocked to 1.8GHz)
Diceplayer has played anything Ive thrown at it

Hey I'm considering the S3, I had a question if you wouldn't mind answering. I was wondering what resolutions you all were playing these files at, and also if you happen to know or could check if the .mkv files were encoded in H.264 or Hi-profile H.264. The reason I ask is than I have downloaded tons and tons of anime and other files and most of them are encoded in Hi-profile h.264 MKV. I would appreciate any help, thanks.

According to a review on "anandtech" (I can't post a link due to the 10 post rule), the camera actually encodes recorded video in 1080p H.264 - High Profile. I know it's not mkv but at least this means it should support the format.
1080p high profile is no problem, you can also play back lower res 720p @ 60FPS, assuming you running stock based rom, CM, AOSP won't have media codecs.
Also flash this kernel Sammy ICS version.

Yeah well .mkv is just a file container anyways, so as long as the video is encoded in that format, then that means it does have the support! Thanks for letting me know, I'll go find that review too.
Sorry to keep bothering you guys, just to confirm 100%, I was wondering if you could download the "Serenity – 720p “On HD DVD” Trailer" from this site. This file is giving my Atrix problems, audio wont sync up and video is really choppy. So if it works flawlessly on the S3 then I know this will be the phone I get.

Dude are you serious? Two post up I told you gs3 can play 720p @ 60FPS and 1080p at up to 30fps no sweat.
That trailer is measly 1280×720 (720p), 23.967 FPS, and gs3 plays it without breathing.
Atrix is a gimp.

Definitely VLC Beta.
It's the only app out of half a dozen I've tried that'll play 1080p h/w accelerated WITH DTS audio & subs.
I've been using vplayer to watch Doctor Who for the past week or so with no problems. And yes, they have the DTS sound track as well. No lag, no issues, all butter
Though methinks its only a free trial, so hopefully these other apps work just as well so I don't have to worry about having to pay for it.
Edit: VLC Beta really is awesome, plays mkv files with dts tracks perfectly. Thanks for the heads up!

Well the Atrix can play other encoded videos at 1080p and even h.264 content at at least 720p...it only has a problem with specifically hi-profile encoded h.264 content. The atrix website claimed it can decode h.264 content, and it can, but not the hi-profile setting. Anyways, sorry I don't mean to sound like I am doubting you, I am just overly cautious. Thanks for letting me know.

so i was reading the box and in the back it says limited to 720p playback so 1080p wont play good what about the videos i record in 1080p
it's not that it won't play, it will play 1080p videos (unless it's a format that overtaxes the phone like .mkv) the manual says this mostly out of legality, the display is 720p, so while the software is perfectly capable the screen just doesn't have enough pixels to do so so you will be able to play 1080p videos but your eyes well be seeing 720

You can play videos recorded in 1080p on a TV or a computer...just not on the phone. The only phone that can at the moment is the Droid DNA.

ah alright thats not cool but eh nothing to cry about
hello all... i m facing a strange lag in my htc m9. currently running Viper one m9 4.3.0. but i have tested with stock rom also , that, i cannot play 4k videos smoothly which i'have downloaded from youtube. i moved that video to my device memory, then opened it with mx player. that video is only playable with mx's SW mode but veryyyyy slowly. both the HW/HW+ mode says "not supported" what can i do to play those 4k videos smoothly in my device? please..T.I.A.
The M9 have an 1080p display, so 4k videos, even 2k videos won't look better than 1080p videos...
You can download the videos at full hd resolution from youtube, you will save space too.
The problem is mxplayer. Because it is downscaling the video from 4k to 1080p on the fly via software it can only convert so much in so little time and that causes it to pause while it converts.
You will find that youtube servers do the bitrate at their end so even if the video says 4k, if you play it via the YouTube app you'll only get the max resolution that your device can handle, in this case 1080p as that is all your device can do.
