Adventures in Canadian modems/APN settings... - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I should start out by saying that I have a Telus I317M N7105 Note 2. Other than rooting the stock 4.0, the only rom I have installed is ProBam (many times over) and to my knowledge it does not touch the modem files or the APN settings. I just recently learned that while I can send MMS messages (attachments to texts), I have possibly NEVER been able to receive them. If people send me a text message, I get it. If they send me a text message with a picture attached, from their end it sends normally with no errors but I never see it or any sign of it.
At first I thought it was the APN settings, but after trying approximately 7 trillion combinations nothing fixes it. I can break things all I want, but the best I can do to fix it is to get back to square one - namely, me being able to send but not receive. And before anyone points me to a link with Telus APN settings, please pm me your home address so I can come and poop in your kid's sandbox. Trust me, I know how many google results there are for such a thing because I HAVE BEEN TO ALL OF THEM.
In desperation I wondered if at some point my modem files were b0rked, even though ProBam wouldn't have touched them and neither have I. Of course I had my original modem/EFS/EMEI stuff backed up from the very beginning, needless to say it doesn't work. My phone was shipped with the I317MVLBMA3 modem, after digging around for a while I flashed the newest Rogers I317MVLUCMK5 modem. What I learned is that the Canadian modem files are NOT cross compatible. When I flashed the newer modem, my primary APN settings screen (which has 3 radio options: Koodo SP, Telus SP, and Telus SP Tether) was firmly locked onto the 'Telus SP Tether' and nothing would make the normal one (Telus SP) stick. Which wasn't a problem, because the phone worked, and so did normal text messages. What wouldn't work was MMS in either direction, no matter what the settings. Also, unlike the stock setup, it was difficult to make changes to the APN settings 'stick'. If you hit the back key, they would revert - which they don't do on stock! If you hit settings, there is a 'save' option, which WILL make them stick, but of course since I never got MMS to work who knows what is really happening?
And now for the saddest news of all: Using the new Rogers modem, my phone had NOTICABLY better reception. I live in Northwest BC, and there are more holes in the cell net around here than a Canucks goalie (sorry, inside joke). With this modem, a lot of those holes were filled, in fact the signal strength was better across the board. A shadow is still a shadow, but in the fuzzy areas I had solid reception. LE SIGH. I should mention that I don't have LTE where I live, but I do have 4G.
And so, I had to flash back to the original modem, where once again NOTHING I do makes it so I can receive MMS messages. I saw some oddball suggestions, there is a 'settings' menu in the actual SMS/MMS app (again, I am using the stock one that I guess is from CM, but I have used Chomp and others and they all work the same), some people have said that unchecking 'auto receive messages' made miracles happen for them, but it didn't make a difference to me.
The phone itself knows that I am not on a stock rom, so people who say that the APN settings are completely separate from the rom are wrong. If I hit 'reset to defaults' it changes the APN type to 'default, supl, mms'. Again, I am going to stress this one more time - I have tried EVERY SINGLE SETTING that I have found on the internet. Pro tip: you don't need spaces, and you don't need to reboot (although I have tried that too between every change, of course).
So PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY, someone give me an idea as to what I can try next?! This is insane, it almost feels like a faulty sim card or something. I don't know if I have EVER received an MMS message, and it was only when someone insisted that they sent me a pic that I knew there was even something up. Please, anything...

Cant get MMS to work on Dash with WM6.1 (unlocked to work with ATT)

I cant recieve any MMS or send them either. They just stay in the outbox when I try to send them. When I was with tmobile, they worked, but then I unlocked my phone, switched to ATT, and upgraded to WM6.1 and they no longer work.
What can I do?
Thanks
You could try this -

Thanks! I actually tried this before, but it wasn't working until I did a few different things. Whenever it tells you to add something, make sure you delete everything else first. I don't know if there really is any difference, but it worked for me.

Can you please provide more detail? I've had no luck trying to send picture thru mms.
Yah I have tried to help him with no success either... Hopefully someone out there is using At&t and is able to help him out.
Arite man here goes nothing, but an attempt...
I work in the technical department of a cellular service provider in the caribbean. We are not as advanced as the americans, etc in the sense of having 3g and stuff like that. Anyways, lol we do provide edge service and i have a dash w/wm6.1 Rom. I also have blackberry connect on my device. Up until recently i never tried sending MMS, so when i attempted to, i ran into a similar error. after reading a thread to fix on here, i finally received my first MMS (which was pending for days by the way), but i still couldnt send.
here's my fix...
since im using BB connect on my device, im connected with EDGE all the time. so i used my connection settings and just added or subtracted a few options from the MMS settings.
the only options i ticked in the settings were: automatic download in home and roaming network, save sent messages and allow delivery report. i then inserted the necessary MMS settings provided by my network: URL, Gateway, Port; always connect via the Internet. After this i was able to receive.
The problem with my network is that it uses WAP or blackberry to send or receive MMS, but since im using BB connect, i wouldnt have all the defaulted settings as a BB device would, so i had to set up a WAP connection and i was able to get rid of my messaged stored in the outbox.
this should be a good solution for you if you know the settings for your service provider, or you can always call and ask for the settings, since it cannot be sent OTA with the Dash.
Yea i know its kind of a long post, but i wanted to give a detailed rundown of how i got mine to work.

[Q] APN won't save, tried two different SIMs, any ideas?

Okay, so today I was at work, receiving calls, making calls, sending texts, phone was working fine. I'm on AT&T, using their SIM in the Galaxy Nexus. Suddenly, I have no service. Nothing. So, after several reboots, I finally check the APN. There's nothing there. I attempt to add one, and it promptly disappears.
I went online and found others had a similar experience when they attempted to change their MCC and MNC, but I never had. Just running stock JB with the settings the OS automatically found for my SIM, which has worked for nearly a week.
Thinking my SIM might be to blame, I pulled out my Straight Talk (at&t compatible) SIM that I have on my backup Samsung Captivate. Not only does the Galaxy Nexus not find an APN, any attempt to add an APN fails. I can add one, it'll "save" but it doesn't show up in the list.
Both SIMs work fine in the Captivate.
So I just installed MIUI, in case it was some issue in stock. Same results for both. It seems it's ROM-independent and SIM-independent. Can't make an APN stick.
Any thoughts? Is my phone a lemon? I can't imagine what else to do, since a new ROM and a new SIM doesn't fix it.
Okay, further update:
I dialed the *#*#4636#*#* number to check the phone info, and the IMEI is listed as Unknown.
I'm assuming this is bad? :|
Nevermind, finally found some threads on it. Looks like I'm SOL. /sigh
I have exactly the same problem, anyone has an answer to this problem...
what tread did you found...did you fix your problem?

[Q] SMS immediately failing, due to phone setting

Hello all. Today I was playing with my phone, just doing some tinkering, running a ROM called Xylon (4.2.1) in the phone settings. You know, where you hit *#*#4636*#*# or something rather. Now I changed my network type to GSM, (or something rather) but saw I only got 2G, so I switched it back to WCDMA preferred, and left. (Honestly can't remember if I changed something else)
Now, every time I try and send a text, it says sending.... then it fails. All the time, to any number. Which is obviously annoying.
So I went ahead and flashed another ROM, clearing all my data, cache, dalvik etc. However this problem persists. Even using a different SMS app. What should these settings be? I haven't touched them after flashing another ROM.
I know I'm a goof, but I rely heavily on SMS, and I was just looking for a way to have it stay on HSDPA more often instead of 3G. Now I want to revert to stock. Many, many thanks for any help at all
Here are screen shots of my settings. Again, I'm pretty desperate, and need some help
Okay, I think I got it. My SMSC number was missing. This is basically a message center number, that is specific to the carrier. I remember seeing it back on my Blackberries, and on my old Gingerbread powered Captivate, but the settings are obviously different from ICS and above. (ICS has been out for so long, that I forgot)
So, basically you do this, go back into the settings that I showed you in the screen shot above. Leave everything disabled, and have the network on WCDMA
Use this tutorial http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/SMSC_Updates
Fido's SMSC is +15149931123
hit update and reboot
If not, try 07915141991321f3
and reboot (same thing, but it HEX)
hopefully none of you have that problem
EDIT: Girlfriend confirmed, that was the problem. Now the phone works like a champion

SGH-M919 No Data

Howdy,
About 3 weeks ago, I bought two refurbished SGH-M919 phones off eBay to replace mine and my wife's broken/old phones. Her phone was worse off, so the first one I set up was to be hers. Rooted, installed TWRP, and flashed Mokee with no issues. Put her SIM in, put her data back on, she's good to go.
I go to set the next one up for myself, do everything the exact same way, and came to realize after I put my SIM in that the phone is not connecting to LTE. Call/SMS/Wifi all work fine. I didn't notice whether or not it was doing this before rooting, recovery, and ROM.
It's giving me a "Sign-in to network" notification. I tap it, it takes me to a T-Mobile ConnectMe screen. It gives me a "Get Started" button, which I tap, and it says "We're sorry, you have switched your SIM card between different devices, so you will need to manage your account through My T-Mobile or the MyAccount app. Once you have replaced the original SIM card, you may resume managing your account through on-device account maintenance." I can only tap close. My wife's phone didn't give me this "error". I made sure the APN settings were identical between the phones, they were.
I called T-Mobile, they gave me a bit of runaround, said everything looked fine from their end, and "rebooted the connection" which didn't improve anything. They also had me verify my APN settings with them. They had me enter some different values, but it didn't change anything. They also advised me against purchasing phones from less than reputable sources. Great, thanks, that was helpful.
I switched the SIM cards between the two phones and this one is still not connecting to LTE, the other phone is. This led me to think maybe it was a hardware issue, and looked into the modem as a possibility. I found that T-Mobile updated the baseband last month on the stock 4.4.4 ROM, so I flashed that baseband and no change. Both phones were on NH7 when I received them.
I happened to notice on my T-Mobile account page that the device status is listed as "locked/unknown." So, I called T-Mobile twice today for an unlock code. The first guy was less than helpful but the second person did enter an unlock request for me, theoretically, I am currently waiting for that email to show up sometime in the next 24 hrs. But, the phone so far has not given me an unlock prompt so I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with that unlock code once I get it. I'm also not 100% clear on whether the code is for a SIM unlock (which I shouldn't need) or what exactly. It is just the next in a series of ideas which I'm rapidly running out of. A check of the IMEI number revealed it was clean on all US carriers, with the exception of T-Mobile and Sprint which both come up as "unknown." Don't know if that means anything or not.
I'm getting ready to jam this eBay store up, but I'd really rather the phone just start working. I've been dinking with this for weeks and my frustration is mounting, especially since I can't seem to find anyone else who has had/posted about this problem before. I'm not a cell phone hobbyist or anything, and I'm just going off what I can find on Google and places like this. Any ideas/help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony
I am not familiar with the issue, just some extra troubleshooting ideas...
Have you checked under the battery and confirmed the model number is SGH-M919 and the IMEI matches matches what is on the phone?
Have you checked your APN settings?
Have you tried flashing a complete full stock firmware -

IMEI under the battery matches what comes up with *#06#.
I did check on the APN settings, forgot to mention that. I edited it into the first post, added text in red:

I didn't flash a full stock firmware. I had issues flashing the non-hlos.bin to the phone, which as I understand it is the more important of the two files for my issue since it does the LTE. However, Wifi works perfect with transfer rates equal to the other phone. So, I don't know.
I'm downloading OK3 now. I read about a guy updating his modem by backing up his custom ROM, flashing a stock rom, and restoring his custom ROM. Will TWRP back up my current NH7 non-hlos.bin? If so, can I manually remove it from the recovery image without borking anything?
For your situation, just flash the full firmware. Don't remove anything from the tar. OK3 is the newest modem. Get your phone working and go from there.
Yeah, I think I'll do that when I get home, unless someone has a better idea. :fingers-crossed:

Try to flash the latest stock... Before flashing reset your device (take data/photo etc backup).... Hope that should resolve the issue....
Also what is it showing in settings > network? Is it LTE or 2G or 3G???
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Thanks, that's the one I'm downloading and I'll try flashing it when I get home. It looks like it will replace TWRP and everything, bringing the phone completely back to stock?
In the mobile network settings > mobile network menu, it shows the preferred network as LTE.
Yes. It will be completely stock. If it works, you can then root and put TWRP on and go from there.
Alright, flashed the afore-linked OH3 ROM and the LTE is still broken. The phone shows up as connected to LTE, but nothing works. Play Store times out, both stock internet browsers time out. I still get the same T-Mobile nag that I got before and it still doesn't let me do anything.
Also got the unlock email from T-Mobile:
Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We have received your SIM Unlock Request. Unfortunately, we are unable to process your request at this time because we are only able to provide unlock codes for T-Mobile USA handsets. Please refer your unlock request for this equipment directly to the carrier that the handset was purchased from.

Is there anything left to troubleshoot, or do I return it as defective?
If data works for your sim card in your wife's phone and not for your sim card in your phone, it would have to be a phone issue. You can double check if data works with your wife's sim card in your phone.
If your APN settings match your wife's phone with her data working, the last thing I can think of to try is go to Settings, under Connections go to More networks > Mobile networks and check Data roaming just in case your phone is roaming for whatever reason.
If your phone was locked on a different carrier, I don't think you would have cell service. If your IMEI was blacklisted or borked, I don't think you would have cell service.
I'd return the phone.

I will check on those two things when I get home, but my thought process was similar to yours. Both my wife's new phone and the LTE Wifi hotspot we use for our internet service have full signal on LTE everywhere in the house, so my best guess at this point is there's a hardware issue with the modem in the phone. I might look into replacing whatever board the modem is on. If it's relatively cheap, I'd rather just pay for the part instead of waiting 2-3 weeks for turnaround on the return/exchange, but I think that's probably what we're gonna end up doing.
Thanks for the help, fellas. I appreciate it.
