Hello smart people. Hoping someone there has an idea for me...
This morning I dropped my GN and killed the screen. The display kinda-sorta works, but the touch sensor is non-op. OK, no problem, I've got in contact with Samsung and they'll fix it for the same price I can buy a replacement lcd/digitizer assembly anywhere I've found. Only problem: They'll be wiping the phone.
90% of what I need on the phone is synced to the cloud in one way or another, so I'm not too worried, but I WOULD very much like to recover some recent video and pictures that haven't been archived yet (daughter's dance recital). Phone is still working, except that it's pin-locked now (company policy) and I can't see the file tree to pull the stuff out.
Then I thought I'd play with the GN Toolkit. Only problem there is I guess I need USB debugging turned on, or something else I need enabled is disabled and I can't twiddle the menus to enable it.
Let's start with the obvious easy question: Any way to sync to the file system without unlocking via the touchscreen?
Failing that, is there any way to unlock/enable whatever I need to use the toolkit to pull the images out of the media directory?
I have a little time before I need to send the phone to Samsung for repair, so I'm willing to mess with this a bit and learn whatever I need to learn, but I'm not sure if what I need to do is even possible.
Thanks.
Can't just plug the phone in to a computer and it appear as a media device? Should be able to just pull the internal data.

If the phone is pin-locked, the file system shows as empty when you connect as a media device (until you unlock it).

Sorry wasnt aware of that. If you cant get it unlocked.. and USB debugging isnt enabled... then your outta luck.
You could get an MHL adapter and plug in a mouse, then use that to enter your pin at the lock screen. You could also go into recovery and factory reset, as that shouldn't touch your /sdcard contents.
Is there another way for enable debugging on Nexus?
I guess we can't enable debugging via adb, right?
If you just find a way around to do that, maybe you can use the line "adb pull"
(If you search for "adb commands" on Google you will find a list commands to use on developer.android.com)

If he's on stock then yeah that will delete his internal. If he's on a custom recovery no.

There's a plug in for the SDK called screencast which let's you use your computer screen a duplicate screen to your Android device. You can select things with your mouse. We used to use it in the early gingerbread days of my old vibrant when recovery was hidden behind the double rainbow

Debugging has to be enabled for ADB to be able to interact with the phone.
Glad I ran across this thread. I have a colleague in the same situation.

Ahh, this might be a path to victory. Didn't realize I'd be able to do a factory reset and have stuff stay intact. Might be my best approach...

Yes. And the only way to get anything to work is to have USB debugging enabled. Screen cast only works with adb enabled.
Looks like I might be boned on this one. Thanks much for everyone who had suggestions. Sounds like leaving USB debugging enabled might be a best practice from now on, eh? (Or at least making sure EVERYTHING syncs to the cloud automatically...)
Looking at the google policy manager, I can remotely: Lock the device (duh), Reset the Pin, make it ring, or "Wipe", which I'm guessing is a factory reset. Might try that as a last resort, but I'll remain hopefull.
I'm sure you've tried this - but if you''re on stock you may be able to boot into recovery using voldown + power (or is it volup+voldown + power? Not sure, can't remember). THEN plug it into your machine and see if it shows up in the toolbox as a connected device...
adb should be enabled in recovery. reboot to recovery [power + vol up and down] mount sdcard and then adb pull whatever files.

Feel like I'm getting closer. I can see enough screen to scroll through to "Recovery Mode" and hit enter. It seems to reboot at that point, but then I can't see enough of the screen to navigate any additional menus. Should I be able to connect at that point?

I've apparently managed to get it mounted in the Bootloader interface and in fastboot mode, but can't figure out how to get it into adb mode, which is apparently what I need to do the pull.
The LCD has gotten worse, I have almost no visibility now. If I knew now many down or up strokes to make at each menu stage, I could probably do it blind...

Can't do adb in Fastboot mode. While in flastboot mode. Hit the volume up twice and hit the power button. This will boot into recovery. Then try using the
Code:
adb devices
command. If you get a gibberish code next do device ID. Then your good. Go ahead and
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/

OK guys so this is the issue, I'm trying to reset my buddies Samsung Galaxy S 2 on T-Mobile. He forgot his password and he asked me to help since I'm handy with cell phones. So I tried the easiest thing and tried to do a hard reset. Now I press and hold Volume Up and Down and Press and hold the Power button until I feel it vibrate and let go of the Power button while still holding Volume Up and Down and it will take me to where it says "# Manual Mode #" but when I scroll down and try to select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" I can't select it. I tried pressing the Home button and the Power button to select it and nothing. I tried all the buttons and nothing. I also tried putting in Download Mode to try to reflash the firmware but when I connect it to the computer I don't here it connect and Odin doesn't recognize it not even in the Device Manager. I tried doing the same on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the computer and Odin recognize it just fine. So i'm stumped and need you guys help! Thanks in Advance....
Have you installed the proper USB driver and Kies for the phone on your computer? Make sure you are using the latest Odin.
Also, try flashing a different recovery system such as TWRP once you're able to get Odin working.
As long as you are able to get your phone to connect to Odin, you should be fine. You can even flash a stock ROM through Odin if all else fails.
Good luck!

If you can't get Odin to work, test it on another Galaxy S2 to see if the problem is with the computer. Just a tip.
I have been having the same problem. this t989 i have been working with does not show up on any laptop in the house, and they all have the kies drivers installed. it is "usb device not found." i have been considering wiping the usb storage and sending it straight back to factory settings. but without odin i am going to have to manually flash recovery and all that.. any ideas?? I hooked my phone up to both laptops in the house and it shows up instantly. i am definitely confused. and the worst of it, is ubuntu didnt even recognize the phone.
Do yo have any belkin router software install on your computer. If you have, uninstall it and try.

No luck, installed Kies and didn't recognize phone in Odin. What's weird is that it will not let me factory reset thru the 3 button combo in # manual mode #! I would try a different pc but don't have one atm.
i think i am going to try pointing the phone to googles oem driver
Windows 7
To install the Android USB driver on Windows 7 for the first time:
Connect your Android-powered device to your computer's USB port.
Right-click on Computer from your desktop or Windows Explorer, and select Manage.
Select Devices in the left pane.
Locate and expand Other device in the right pane.
Right-click the device name (such as Nexus S) and select Update Driver Software. This will launch the Hardware Update Wizard.
Select Browse my computer for driver software and click Next.
Click Browse and locate the USB driver folder. (The Google USB Driver is located in <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver\.)
here is something interesting the phone i am working on the usb storage is not mounted on the phone. has anyone seen anything like this before?

Suppose I do this ^^^^^^ and all goes well
next, if I use kies to upgrade to JellB will I still have root? Or should I upgrade to JB first and then root? I will likely use a custom rom anyway, but Im the kind to wanna go one step at a time and not just jump into someone elses build. Possibly building my own once I see things a little better.
Thanks in advance

thanks for responding to the noob. Update successful now I will try this method.
recarcto the
Super easy, but when I launch titanium backup it says "sorry I could not acquire root privileges"
since the phne was used I tried again thinking it was rooted, but still same message. Oddly super user won't disappear.
IDK if its the CWM_Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2 is the issue or not but I found "Superuser.zip" file from a different sight.
It is trusted as well, so well see if it does the tirck...
IT DID NOT!
superuser still apperas but titanium backup says could not gain root access.
Really strange cuz superuser appeared after both times. and the subsuqnet third...HOw can I make super user go away now? I thought repeat process would unroot but that seems not to be the case.
any advise would be grand.

Just in case for future droid noob like me (bs I can't put links till i have 10 posts)
I figured it out...4 hours later....There is no guide for this and I may be lucky my trial and error's did not brick the device but I was careful.
What I had to do to get the t989uvmc6 root permissions was easy as pie, but it was finding the right components so here they are. Perhaps I should start a new thred.
*First kies to 4.1.2 -----> h

*Second, phone in download mode (phone off hold volume and plug in usb cable) *A note here I did turn on "usb debugging" in developer options, general settings, but I'm,not sure it was mandatory
*Third run oden 307 ----> htt

Let everything happen. Once all this is done and nothing is happening shut phone off.
*fifth, Whatever mode its called when you hold both volume buttons then press power till feel one vibration and let go power button (keep holding volume buttons)
*sixth, You will get the TWRP screen. touch the reboot option then touch the system optoin (after this it is pretty much duhmmy proof mode)
It will say system is not rooted want to root slide for yes (duhhh)
magic will happen excitement ensues. phone restarts
Last, once the phone starts go to apps and youll see the superuser icon click it (it gives you options READ THEM and more duhhhh mode happens)
it will tell you the magic is not quite done yet.
Go ahead and follow the instructions. (or just install superSU should work too) (must have data or wifi!) There is a diff way here for sure
There are two options I choose the one recommended which was to download it
(it was the option on right of the screen and NOT the "play" icon on the left. I can't remember the name of that choice as im tired right now)
None the lesss it will be in the description given to you, you did read it and skip this, right?
Once you have superSU downloaded some other $%*# happens the phone will reboot it self on last time showing some quick command line (well mine was quick)
then when you get back into the "main" os go apps and you should see a different icon called superSU
you will then be rooted. Find a root app like titanium backup to be sure
So now Ive done all that somone skool me on the easier softer way?
Hope this helps someone cuz it would have helped me!
Now,
To hope the battery lasts more than 4 hr!
Can somebody help me? I have a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy s2. I had it rooted on 2.3.5 (or 2.3.6 not sure). Now its 4.4.2. I flashed a updated radio and Hellkat-20140105-Hercules and 4.4 gapps. OK I have a Galaxy Tab3 GT-P5210, I have developer usb debugging enabled, I have the Samsung KIES package installed on my PC and I've downloaded Odin307, the TWRP package and the ROOT package that is well documented in this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525630
The problem I'm having is with the step that says:
Power down your device and put it into download mode. To do this, press and hold the Home + Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously for 3 to 5 seconds until you see the warning screen.
When I do this it goes into something called 'Android System Recovery <3e>" with a prompt that says "# MANUAL MODE #" with the following options:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
and it does not show up in Odin so I cannot get further...how can I resolve this?
as a rant here, I really wish Google would mandate that all providers supply an option to root the device and install stock Android...this nonstop jumping thru hoops just to have basic control over a device you spent good money on is ****ing stupid

Hey man download mode is where you flash custom recoveries and custom or stock Roms on your device. The answer to you for download mode is your not holding it down enough. first power off the device. Second hold these buttons all together: power + Volume Down + home button. Keep holding these buttons for a minimum of 10-15 seconds or more and it will go into download mode. From there you open up Odin on your pc and then you should see in a box your com port this means your connected. From there you it PDA and you select your recovery file. It should end with
.md5! Make sure re-partition is not checked or you will brick your device! Now it start and once it's done it will say Res OK. Good luck!

Check to make sure you have the samsung usb drivers. to do that go to my computer then local disk then go to programs and files. if you see the SAMSUNG folder and when you open it and you see the drivers folder containg the usb drivers then if you don't see it then we need to install the drivers. first uninstall kies. you don't need this.the download and open this exe file: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_nizg6yUZ0NS1RodDBxd0E1MFU/preview . install it normally.

After trying some different things I got Odin working, was able to install TWRP and root the device so that's all good
Now I've downloaded the framework-res.apk and decompiled it, modded it as i wanted to and recompiled using the Android Multitool app and the final issue I'm having is pushing the new framework-res.apk back to the device. The Android Multitool app claims it pushes the file but it does not. So I downloaded the latest sdk and I'm going to try using the raw ADB tool to push the file and see if that works...wish me luck
You can use twrp file manger to do that.
Just copy your file to sdcard while connected to pc and then reboot to recovery use file manager in advanced settings. Find your file and copy it to where ever you need it.

not sure if cwm will help, but twrp 3 will definitely help, i want you to boot into download mode and flash twrp 3 using Odin, and then boot into recovery.
TWRP 3 has MTP enabled by default, so when you're in TWRP and connected your phone to PC, you will see your phone on PC and will be able to copy anything you want.
also you can use adb pull commands but it requires usb debugging on in your rom.

you press power + home + volume down for 3 seconds, then press volume up, and connect your phone to PC, then flash the TWRP 3 using Odin, after the flash is done, remove battery, and insert again, then hold the power + home + volume up for 4 seconds, the release the power and keep holding the other 3 buttons for another 3 seconds then release, by now it should be in recovery mode, now connect to PC and you should see your phone and all its content.

So my screen blacked out and I would like to attempt and retrieve the information off of my phone. I have an idea to use the CWM I have installed on my phone and from there mount it. But since I cannot see the screen, I was hoping somebody could tell me the number of presses of each button so I can mount it. Thanks!

good question.
he can't do it in two cases:
1- if he is using android 6.0+
2- if he is using a password, PIN or a pattern in his lock screen.
i believe he should have tried your suggestion already, it would be a shame if he didn't because it's an Obvious thing.
however, i should have mentioned that as well...
