When connected via USB and with the appropriate USB Mass Storage setting configured for storage connection to PC, the device does not show up in the Dolphin file manager so as to be able to copy files between the two. Would anyone have any idea what may be the problem?
I am using OpenSUSE 13.1 with KDE desktop, FYI.
Thanks.
Wrong forum I guess.
Epic 4G (SPH-D700) is a Galaxy S1-family device.
Epic 4G Touch (SPH-D710, maybe you are referring to this device) is a Galaxy S2-family device.

I'm not a moderator, see...
And are you really sure you have an Epic 4G (SPH-D700) instead of Epic 4G Touch (SPH-D710)? Epic 4G doesn't support MTP/PTP at all, it uses USB Mass Storage mode for file transfer. MTP/PTP should be a feature for devices with internal storage, e.g. S2.

Yes, an SPH-D700 is written under the battery. So, I don't know what I'm talking about, sorry. My device does have a 32GB SD Card used as internal storage which I had upgraded from 16GB earlier. It's removable and what I considered to be utilized for both the Android opsys as well as for file storage such as music, etc.
I do see the USB connected icon in the status bar and when utilizing the drop down, see the indicator which allows me to click on it bring up the USB Mass Storage selection method for connecting to the PC or disconnecting. Might this be a problem when under Linux the device does not appear for use to transfer files, etc.? Or should we continue this topic in the S I family forum, whichever that may be?
Thanks again for the information!

Yup, then we're in the right forum and can continue the topic here (Yes, SPH-D700 belongs to the S1 family, but that doesn't mean they share one forum!)
But to be honest I have no idea about the problem you have, because on my Ubuntu PC, when I click the "Enable Mass Storage" button, it is properly mounted and Ubuntu recognizes it as a removable storage. Probably a problem with your PC.

Oh, gosh. I have a similar thread going in the OpenSUSE forum trying to resolve this issue with the gurus there. I worry when you say it may be a problem with my PC and think only that the connection with my GS III works perfectly fluid. I get the notification upon attachment and the device does indeed appear under the Dolphin file manager as would be expected. Why this device is problematic makes me think it may be related to the custom ROM which I have flashed.
This is the MarcusantROM Revival v3 with the 2.6.35.7-Shadow-TW-MTD_v0.4 which utilizes a different partitioning and file system than the OEM ROM does. Could this be an inability to properly read the file structure of the phone from within Linux? (Like I know what I'm talking about )

The different partition you're talking about must be MTD. My Epic 4G also has an MTD-format ROM, but still it mounts properly.
And by "problem with your PC", I mean you might have incorrectly set up drivers, environment, etc..., not that the hardware's broken - the PC still recognizes the device, yes? Sorry to have caused you worry

Well, in the meantime I have upgraded to the very latest The People's ROM v 2.21 and have a nicely running GS I right now. And, I've had the phone on the Windows 7 laptop and see the way the differences reveal themselves apart from the GS III when it is attached.
As to my Linux configuration, I don't suppose there are any difficulties in that when I attach the GS III there are no problems whatsoever. Period. That makes me think that things are functioning properly in that arena. However, the GS I still does not want to mount properly for me as it should. I think it is definitely a Linux issue and will pursue it there more aggressively. I don't know if there are many Linux users hereabouts but I haven't seen many jump to the rescue in this thread. Probably because the problem may be less related to these forums than those of the Linux forums.
Want to thank you again for your experience and wise advice and say that I will probably report back once the issue is resolved. Thanks again!

Well, I'm back to say I got the issue resolved. Upgrading to the newest People's ROM 2.22 incremented my firmware version to 2.3.6 which I believe is the reason I am finally able to properly mount the device as sought originally. Thanks for the hand holding while I worked through this issue.

I find it unacceptable that a Linux based operating system has so much difficulty connecting/mounting to the most popular Linux package out there (ubuntu). After 3 hours of searching and trying different methods I gave up. Was doing it remotely for a friend in a different state but I doubt that made a difference. Am I missing an easy fix here? I don't want to use androids or whatever that app is. Also gMtp won't allow any transfer gives errors.

Agreed. However, I found that this method worked for me.
There seems to be an issue with copying over an existing file on the android device which throws an error, but if you delete the file on the phone first, then copy all is good.
Not ideal, but a whole lot better than I was expecting!
Hope this helps.

I've never liked the idea of USB transfers, plugging in cables is too much like manual labor
You can install an SSH server on your phone and then use sshfs on your PC to connect to it. The real bonus is it's a much better way to get to a terminal on your phone as well.
For really large files you can also transfer using a USB memory stick with the right cable and software.
I barely ever plug my phone in. I use both airdroid and filexpert (both in market) to do web or http file transfers!
Just my preference.

OTA file transfer is fine but requires unlimited data plan. I'm looking for an old fashioned usb connection. I never thought I'd say this but I am just about to "miss" Gingerbread.
Put the device in Camera (PTP) mode and it works fine. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only drawback is that you can't transfer files over 4GB?
I see you're running Ubuntu, try this if the above method doesn't work well for you: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-easily-mount-the-galaxy-nexus-on-ubuntu-11-10-via-unity/

That seems to be a popular method but was not successful. I was doing it remotely for a friend and will do it again when I see him next month.
Also, the PTP appears not to show the whole 32 GB partition. I can't be sure since I was working on it via teamviewer and did not have my hand on the phone.
I agree with the OP that this is a PITA. In the past I have done the majority of my transfers to my phone via wifi anyway, but transferring HD video to the phone would be considerably faster via a wired connection. I admit that I did not try to hard to get it working after the first few times (most tutorials on the web seem focused on 11.10 and I use 10.04), and have just resorted to wifi transfers.

MTP and PTP both show only the contents of sdcard/media I suspect this is intended to stop end users breaking their phone.
I've moved to airdroid - it needs to have the computer and the phone on the same wireless network and uses that network, it doesn't use a carrier so shouldn't use any of your data allowance.
I agree it's suboptimal but no-one here is responsible for the decision to make the GN without a fat32 partition.
HeyItsLou has some good for getting MTP working on 11.10. He's pulled the updated source from the 12.04 repos and has a nice tutorial for getting it working. http://ohheyitslou.blogspot.com/2011/12/galaxy-nexus-enable-mtp-file-transfer.html
damn, just use adb push already. or like someone said, a ssh server on the phone. edit config to limit only to a known ip or mac address,
or even better, ask for help in google groups, or check aosp bug tracker. 3hrs to solve or reach a conclusion is nothing.
/me sent this from a i9250 using tapatalk
It is indeed a big mess. I found a tutorial for using it with Fedora here: http://blog.offenders.org/?p=101 (I can't post links yet...)
It involves recompiling the mtpfs drivers, and it still doesn't work 100%.
I've also tried doing a 'reverse tether', i.e. connecting the USB cable and selecting 'Settings/More/Tethering.../USB tethering'. Then (if you run an SSH server on the phone) you can connect using SSH over the USB cable.
Unfortunately it's still a bit clunky, and I frequently find myself connecting to a Windows machine instead, just to avoid the trouble.
Adb push would be OK for me but this is for those I've setup with ubuntu and preached a no "windows" world to. I'll try the airdroid for him but we need a simpler solution. I usually setup these computers as a dual boot of xp/vista/7 and ubuntu 11.04. I guess as it was suggested is better to boot into Windows transfer the files and then get out. Ughhh

I tried this, but I got some errors saying that it couldn't find the packages at the beginning of his blog post. I tried continuing on (since I saw that I had the packages installed)... the really odd thing is that once in mounts (eventually) and I go into my Nexus folder, the only folder I see is Playlists, and that folder is empty.
EDIT: I got this working. I had to track down the packages and download them to a local folder and install from there. Then I rebooted and ran Lou's script again. I'm seeing all my folders now. If you JUST see "Playlists" it means you don't have the right packages.
Hello,
When I try to drag & drop movies to my Note II I am getting an error. I did a search on Google and I the answer I got is that the phone isn't in UMS mode. Then I searched how to put my Note II in UMS mode but the answer was: it can't. Although the answer isn't positive I am just putting up a new thread, maybe someone actually does know how to do this.
Thank you!

Might help if you posted up the error you are getting.
Whilst the Note 2 doesn't support UMS, it does support MTP, so I am assuming, since you've mentioned dragging and dropping, that this is working and you are seeing your Note 2 as a device.
How big are the movies you are trying to copy onto your Note 2?

Hello Dave,
Thank you for your reply.
When I am trying to drag & drop the movie I am not getting a error specifically, but a window that comes up with the message: windows explorer isn't reacting.
That is correct, I am seeing my Note 2 as a device, in particular a portable media player. Actually it isn't a movie but a Sopranos episode. It's about 2/3 gigabytes big.
I really can't figure out why it doesn't work.

I would like a faster solution for bigger files. But thank you anyways, I'll do it via this app till I got an solid solution.
Try transferring a smaller video file to see if that makes a difference. Do you have any problems transferring other file types (pics, text)?

I know if your memory is in FAT32 format you cannot place files on it larger than 4GB. Also if you are rooted there is an app(s) in the market for Samsung devices that switches your phone from MTP to the Android 2.3.3 USB Mass Storage Mode that might yield better results for you. I believe it is "USB Mode Switch" on Google Play. There is also a way to do it though ADB.

No, it's a common problem.
Perhaps you should mention what format video file it is. Natively it will only allow you to transfer mp4 files. Any other files and mtp will ask if you want to convert the file. Perhaps the mtp is trying to convert the video file before the transfer. That may be the problem you are experiencing.

Similar to dropbox but much faster. Drop box syncs the same folders. With goodsync you can choose which folder to sync with what. Secondly dropbox stores data in the air, goodsync doesnt.

What version of windows? Windows can not see the Note2 as an external hard drive-device to drag & drop to?
What about transferring the files to a micro-sdhc card on your pc then putting it in your Note2 (which you could transfer to internal memory if you want)?
Alternatively, what about uploading to Google Drive or Dropbox & downloading it to the Note 2?

I would suggest that if you are getting a message about Windows Explorer not reacting, the problem is more likely related to the PC, not the Note.

Is not the PC. I've seen this same problem many times since Google implemented MTP, it's complete garbage.
Windows is erroring because the transfer is damned slow that it just times out on large files. I've pretty much given up trying and just take the SD card out and plug it in to my card reader now; it's faster and actually WORKS.

Sorry, but I've transferred films larger than this without error, so I cannot agree with your findings.
YMMV, but thus far I have not had to remove the sdcard from my Note 2 in order to transfer a movie to my device. The largest individual file I've transferred came in at a shade under 2GB, but I've also transferred over 4GB total in multiple files without issue.

I had a similar issue, the fix isn't exactly something you'd think of.
Do you have the DivX codec installed on your PC?
If yes, uninstall it. Doing so fixed the issue for me.
Any mkv file I tried transferring would crash Windows Explorer until I uninstalled the DivX codec.
This has been plaguing me for way too long! I couldn't get my S3 to connect with my Mac. I thought the first ICS update did something to keep ATF from reading my phone. I finally found a solution for getting Android File Transfer to work on my iMac with my Galaxy S3 even after the Jelly Bean update and on a custom ROM. I'm currently running Wicked JBv1, but I'm pretty sure this will work even if you're on stock or with any custom ROM. I found this solution in the Tmobile forums and I give the credit to user dk123 for posting it. I'm running OSX Lion by the way.
First make sure you remove the Kies software from your computer. I used appZapper.
Then I removed ssuddrv.kext from System/Library/Extensions. I made a copy of the file first and saved it in my documents just in case something goes wrong.
Before reconnecting my phone i made sure to check USB Debugging and when I reconnected it AFT found my phone instantly.
I don't know how helpful this may be, but I've been wondering for months why ATF wasn't working. It's still not the most user friendly way to connect your S3 to your Mac, but at least I can move music files over fairly easily without having to use the crappy Kies Software. I hope this helps even just one person.

That is a pretty good program, but my music library is a little on the large side. I like the quick use of AFT for moving ROM downloads or moving pictures off my phone. Small stuff. Kies is just way too slow and klanky on my machine.

From finder, click on your hard disk, then find click on system folder, then library folder then extensions folder. Scroll down to find the file and drag a copy to your desktop before deleting it.

 I nearly cried/ That's brilliant. We were in a parallel universe, you and I with the android/mac connectivity and yes Kies really isn't geared for Mac users. ATF is clunky but certainly productive, And it would seem, the only way around the problem since Apple have fallen out with, well, most every other competitor, Especially Samsung given their legal arguments the last couple of years. Amyway, I'm waffling. Just wanted say thanks for the detective work and the solution.
Do you also get long freeze when you try to rename file or folder on the phone or sdcard when using MTP mode? I have measured this and from the moment I press enter to confirm filename change to the moment that window unfreezes it takes 5 minutes 37 seconds. Then folder name changes and it works for another folder too... Sometimes it doesn't work for the next few filename changes but finally it's starting to work correctly.
I've reinstalled my mtp and samsung adb drivers and removed anti-virus from the pc.
What's also very weird is that you can create folders without freezing, as long as you don't change the names (like New Folder or New Folder (1) etc.)
What could be causing this?
I'm on Windows 8 x64.
Yea happens with me too. I just get tired of waiting and instead create or edit the folder on the phones file.explorer. Not a solution but I'd like.to.know what can be done to.resolve this too.
Sent from the rabbit hole.
This seems to happen on pretty much any device/ROM/OS combo I've tried. This is the #1 reason MTP should die in a ditch.

I got same problem, any solution yet?
Also happens on my Galaxy S2 which now runs stock jellybean, so at least it's not Note specific. Could be jellybean specific though...
I'm having this issue on both my Galaxy S4 and Nexus 7 (1st Gen).
Has anyone found a solution yet?

Same problem on S3 and Windows 8.1 x64
This has happened to me on ANY device using ANY rom on ANY version of Windows.
Pretty sure it's unsolvable.
Ah good I am not the only one with the stupid problem. Takes me about a minute to rename a folder.
Windows 8.1 x64
Might try it in Ubuntu see if it happens there
I thought my sd card was faulty...........
Having the same problem. In fact, it is just not possible to modify a file or folder name in MTP Protocol and it has been defined in that way.
"The MTP and PTP standards do not support direct modification of objects. Modified objects must be copied out of the device and reuploaded in their entirety"
Source: Wikipedia
same for me, i do have problems even if i have to copy/paste something.
This has to be a configuration issue in windows.
I am only saying this because my brother just bought himself a nexus 5.
I also have a nexus 5
If i rename any file / folder through MTP on my Nexus 5, explorer will hang for about 5 minutes then it will magically just do it.
this can get tedious if there is a large amount that needs doing
if i plug my brothers nexus 5 into the same port with the same USB cable and rename a folder on his device.
It works instantly.
No hang or lockups
I have checked through the registry entries for both devices and they appear identical, except of course the ID numbers
so this is what has me stumped.
we both have the same phone.
running the same ROM
using the same cable
connecting to the same USB port
his works perfectly
mine locks up if renaming anything
WTF?
Was googling about for these symptoms, and I too have them on Windows 8.1 x86_64.
These same symptoms occur with both my Galaxy Nexus and ASUS Transformer Pad, whereas back on Windows 7 on my other laptop, this never happened...
Agreed with whomever posted that MTP should just die. I'd rather mount/unmount like in the good old days. At least that way, the filesystem was current, fast and reliable, and Windows wasn't asking me if I really REALLY wanted to copy that MP3 file to the phone...
*sigh*
(Edit: Well, on one hand, I really wish MTP would die, but on the other hand, I fear that the only "reasonable" alternative to it would be an iTunes-like application that would sit on top of adb and copy files back and forth, and not needing iTunes-like applications is one of the many reasons I'd rather go with Android devices...)
+1 googling about for these symptoms, Windows 8.1 x64 , galaxy s4 i9505 here.........
happens on mtp and ptp too, like someone said if I do not rename the folder, the folder "new folder" is instantly created, as I try to rename a file or folder, I have to wait 2 to 5 minutes for the operation to complete succesfully. Arrrrggghhh......
Never had this problem before buying the s4 on any android phones I had (dozens....but this is my first samsung)
Also happening on my Note 3. Samsung support told me to reset it to factory defaults. It didn't help.
Windows 8.1 x64.
Same issue for me too on Sprint Galaxy S5 running 8.1 64 bit. Never had this issue with my S3 on Windows 7. WTF.
This is not my first Android phone. I recently upgraded from an HTC HD2 running a flavor of Energy Sense 2.3 to this Galaxy S4. Today is the first time I have tried to access the music on my SDCard using a USB connecting to the S4 and have encountered some BS propriatary Samsung block telling me that I am not allowed to access a device that isn't Windows blah blah compatible. WTF?? Never seen this garbage before.
I haven't gotten around to rooting the phone yet...well, because I just haven't. But this almost caused me to toss the thing out the window at 70mph.
What did I miss?

Maybe post what you did to remedy the situation for people that might run into this problem in the future?
What's wrong with Bluetooth?
DDX-616 should have BT connection. USB connection is no-go with kenwood and Samsung.
I have a DDX-719 and always use BT connectivity for music and phone calls.
Pp.

I assumed I hadn't gotten any responses because the answer was obvious. Good or bad, people here tend to ignore rants or stupid questions.

The 616 does not support bluetooth audio streaming connections without an overpriced adapter. Only hands free phone. So in the past I have connected my HD2 or G1 through USB. The receiver would treat the phone as a Thumbdrive and all was good. I assumed the S4 would do the same.
Wrong!
The older Android phones would connect using USB Mass Storage function and the receiver would read all files up to the first 4 gig in the Music directory on the SD card. It ignored anything past that limit. Samsung in their screwed up idea of how things should work have disabled this feature and instead use the MTP function which is slower and requires the appropriate drivers to be installed on the device accessing the phone. In other words it restricts directory access to authorized computers thus breaking something that wasn't broke in the first place.
So after identifying the problem I determined the only fix was to finally root the phone and then to use the apps available to activate USB Mass Storage. Here is a link to the technique that I used http://www.android.gs/enable-the-usb-mass-storage-for-samsung-galaxy-s4/
The only limitation is that I have no access to internal storage. But I'm okay with that.
Cheers!
Wasn't aware of the DDX-616 not supporting BT, well at least you found the fix. Sharing your solution will help someone else so don't hesitate to share your future findings.
Pp. Good.

Not really, you just have to keep bumping your question until someone points it out. Over 5 million members, active or not, there are lots of threads and questions can go unanswered in a heartbeat. Just need to keep them resurfacing.
Just an update. The process listed here does allow me to connect the S4 to my receiver in USB Mass Storage. But it doesn't work automatically. I have to open the Mass Storage app, open the menu for that ap and hit force SD Mount. This causes the Samsung OS to get out of way and the 616 to mount the extSdCard for reading.
Would like an app that does it automatically..
