I put my phone in hotspot mode for 10 minutes yesterday and ever since have been unable to turn on wifi. I have rebooted several times and tried toggling wifi on and off through adb shell (svc wifi enable|disable) with no success.
Re-flashed my phone last night and the wifi was working again until I turned it off and of course it's not letting me turn it back on. The wifi on/off switch in System Settings is greyed out.
Try switching it into airplane mode for a few seconds then switching it back off. If not then more than likely its gonna be kernel related. Which rom are you using?

I turn on wifi and it connects fine, I do whatever...I press the power button to put the phone to sleep but I didn't disable the wifi before doing this.
I turn the phone back on, but the phone doesn't connect to the wifi network. It waits for me to do some action that needs wifi. Anyone have this happening? I've had a few occasions when wifi doesn't even attempt to connect as well, but not very often.
I'm running the stock ATT rom for now. This type of operation never happened with my fuze with a stock rom.
I know there is a hack to enable wifi even when the phone sleeps, and I have not tried that yet. A question about that..does the wifi stay connected even when the phone is in sleep mode which would cause the battery to drain faster?
I'm sure I'll be flashing a rom at some point but would like to get past my 30 day window for returns before doing so.
Thanks again..
Hey guys,
need some help with my htc desire. Just bhought it couple of days back. Everything worked good, until today, as wifi turned itself off after 10-15 min on standby and automatically connects to 3G instead. Even if i turn on the wifi, it will say that the wifi is on, but its not actually connected I have to restart the phone for it to connect with wifi again. And the same thing goes over and over again. Has this happened to anyone?
Please help! :S
I have the orignal firmware, not rooted.
Sort of happening to me too, but after the phone is asleep for long periods, like overnight.
For the past few days, I leave it with WiFi on when I go to sleep, I wake up and WiFi was off. I switch it back on and the phone doesn't seem to use wifi, or it does but just hangs.
Only started happening after the last hard reset, was working fine before that.
I do have the sleep after 15mins setting on, but obviously that shouldnt switch off the wifi, just let it sleeps and should reconnect after waking up.
Waiting for a exchange for another phone due to another issue, but will keep an eye on this, might be the Setting Profile app I've installed that's causing the issue.
My wifi switched off by itself after going standby for sometime.
After I wake up the phone, it will reconnect to the wifi. Not sure if there's app to prevent the wifi from going into standby though.

I have been using the phone for 6 days now, before this my phone could be on wifi all night, and when turned on in the morning the wifi will still be connected. Its strange this should happen now. I installed juicedefender yesterday and than uninstalled it again after trying it..might this has affected my wifi settings.
That's weird. I did installed Juice Defender and uninstalled it as well. Not sure if that's the cause. will do some search and see what I can find out.
FOUND!
We can actually control the Wifi Sleep policy by going to Settings> Wireless & Networks> Wifi Settings> Menu >Advanced> Wifi sleep policy!
Change it to never and it should work as before.

Yes, I know about that setting, but once you wake up the phone, it should wake the wifi and it should reconnect. This is not happening, and in some cases it does switch back on and connects, but doesn't get onto the internet. Seems the phone is still trying to use the cellular network.
Leave it on all the time eats up battery, so rather have it on sleep after 15mins

wow..ur fast..thanks! will try out this..and see until tomorrow if my phone is still shifting from 3g and wifi all the time
edit: yup..this was the reason. So now my wifi is connected 24/7 very happy for this as when it switched off before it started to use my 3G..i dont have unlimited plan so why pay for addional when u can use wifi at home
I am recently rooted and my wifi tether keeps disconnecting after just a few minutes. I am running stock rom with netarchy kernel. I tried different versions of the Wireless Tether app and I am currently running pre 7 which seems to stay connected the longest. But still disconnects. Any suggestions from the Masters would be great.
Thanks.
Seems to be a common problem with all versions of the app...

Happens when the screen shuts off. I just set my screen for a 20 minute timeout and it doesnt happen to me.
they need to add the "prevent sleep" feature and then it wouldnt be a problem. Not sure why they havent done this yet. this problem has been around for quite some time.
I had the same problem of it disconnecting on me after a few minutes. Turned out the problem on my system was a program called tasker that would turn the wifi on every few minutes to verify my location. When it did the check, it knocked tether off. Make sure you don't have a program running that would turn the wifi off.
I turned off the Screen Timeout and I got the same thing. It stayed connected for 7 minutes and then disconnected. This is driving me nuts.
I'm running Pre 9 and I haven't had a single disconnect for like the last 3 hours. Give it a try.
I was having the same issue. Disabled the wake lock...the screen dims, but never shuts off. I left it on all night the other night while downloading "things"...never timed out.
So I have spent some time trying to reproduce the exact issue to figure out what causes it and how to reproduce.
I have a NDE63L Google Pixel XL on Project Fi...
Repro steps:
1) Turn on airplane mode
2) Turn on WiFi only and hopefully connect to your local network
3) Restart phone
4) Unlock phone and get to home screen (should still be in same state as before restart, wifi + airplane mode)
5) Turn off WiFi
6) Turn off airplane mode
7) ???
After doing these steps I immediately get full mobile signal strength bars, but no matter what I do not get any data. No 3G, no LTE, no X (like when mobile data is disabled in settings). However, if I reboot my phone with airplane mode off, I can toggle it and switch data modes post reboot with no issues.
I should also note that I have tried numerous factory resets. As long as I don't install any non-factory apps, this problem does not happen. But as soon as I install a new app from the app store (not an update to an existing app) then I see this issue.
Are you guys seeing this issue at all or is it just me?
I have an old Tab S from AT&T running 6.0.1. I've owned it since they first came out, and it's always worked fine until just this week. I usually leave it in airplane mode when I'm not using it because its battery has always drained faster than I'd like when its online, but this has never been a problem. I only use it for an hour or less most days anyway.
The other day I turned off airplane mode but WiFi wouldn't come on... the icon turns on dim for a minute, then goes off, and manually enabling it doesn't work. The on/off slider in settings slides over but stays gray, then eventually turns itself off.
The first time this happened I rebooted and that fixed it.
A couple days later it happened again and now I can't fix it. I've restarted, I've power cycled it, and I've cleared the data cache... no change.
Bluetooth works, location works, and cell data works.
Also now when I boot up, I get an error "Process System Isn't Responding. End task or wait?" It doesn't seem to matter which option I choose.
Any thoughts?
Some how your system might get conflicted with your app or system apk get corrupted?Reset tablet or reflash os with odin. The worst situation, just rooted and install custom rom.
