[Q] D710 Rom with 3G - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Does anybody know of a good ROM for the d710 which supports everything(GPS, 4G, etc) AND 3G?
It seems that so many of the roms that I have come across have discontinued support for it(as most are moving to Jelly Bean which apparently has little support for it currently).
I have tried a number of them, but I can't find one that has 3G or MMS working! Most recently I have tried the EL26 Modem and both Pacman and "WILD FOR THE NIGHT", a port of CM (the recent nightly CM builds don't support 3G OR 4G) and have had no luck. My phone was unbelievably slow on the stock and any given one of these Roms has my phone running at least 3.5X faster but I need 3G to be working as well.
I appreciate the help. Please tell me what information you need about my phone/builds I've already tried and I'll do my best.

All the roms should support 3g. Roms 4.22 and under should support wimax/4g. 4.3 is when wimax was discontinued.
Who is your carrier? Maybe they don't offer 4G. Does 3g/4g work well with a stock rom? Have you made sure you are using the correct modem?
I use this one, and I get 3g,4g and mms with Sprint.

Any TouchWiz ROM has every function, Project X is still being updated.

The 4.3 and 4.4 builds do not support 4G of course but EVERY wild for the night, and nightly build of 10.1 that I stayed on for more than a day had great 3G. 4G has been crap around here last 6 months. The first official nightly of 10.1 is a great build (8-15) but does have the low volume mic bug on speakerphone my only real complaint. A few builds into the nightlies they went to open source orientation and for a while that was horrid. Many of the Hood Pope builds didn't seem to well to me but you lose 4G there anyways. The previous build of CM 11 (latest is the 7th i think the 4th is the one I had before my service ended) is great except for being early CM11. Stable for me more so than 10.2 builds ever were.

I have sprint and in fact do have 4G. I was even able to get it to work on Wild For The Night, but not 3G for some reason. 4G is great, but I don't always have it. I used the EL26 because it seemed to be one of the most highly recommended. I had previously tried EL29 also, but with no luck. I had wondered if the problem was my modem...
I can do further testing/experimenting tonight. I will try out Re-Calked in Jellybean, some stock ROM, and some Touchwiz ROM and will report back.

Try FL24 Modem on Wild for the Night, it's actually supposed to be an ICS modem and you are using a Gingerbread modem

I never heard of EL26 being highly recommended. EL26 was a highly recommended kernel for cwm flashing because for a very long time no one had ever written a pure cwm kernel for EL29. Most of the sane devs claimed EL29 was one of the best modems, and or perfectly fine etc.

There really is no such distinction as a Gingerbread or ICS modem, more of a mental thing for some of us I guess. Without source of course its difficult to determine what changes were made but until JB when the RIL changes were made all modems are essentially versionless. While some people claim EL29 was a great modem even they would tell other people you have to try and see. I think it was on CM9 I had no GPS on FI27 but I did on FI25 but plenty of people had working GPS on FI27 so its one of those... situations. Some modems have substantial tweaks others are only have a couple bytes changed (build version or date).
Best as I recall prior to the RIL changes made by Samsung mirroring newer devices there were no known compatibility issues of any kind from EG12 to FL24. I am trying to remember what the JB situation was because I know 3G doesn't work if your on a JB modem but something did it was either 4G or GPS. Just kinda wondering if he confirmed his baseband. Try them all though and don't stop til ya love it.

I didn't get the phone until FI27, so I have never used anything Gingerbread on this device except EL29 Direct Boot recovery

I am just kinda mad at Samsung for screwing up a good thing. Obviously the RIL changes were not needed but from what a couple of developers were saying it mimicked Samsungs new practices on the GS3. At one point we could say flash any modem or just flash the rom modem doesn't matter for most people. Now its all are you sure your not on a JB modem etc etc.

I'm more mad at them for packaging the recovery with the kernel

Thanks for your help and suggestions everyone! I tried out several of these but it looks like my main problem(besides inexperience) was that I needed to use a different modem. I did try out the Re-Calked rom and found it to be great but I'm not currently interested in using a Stock based ROM(although it is nice that 99% of them have everything working right off the back).
Thanks especially to bilgerryan! The FL24 modem has been working great!
One strange thing that I did notice however, was even after flashing the WFTN ROM several times, my MMS did not work even after 3G/1X did. Strangely enough.....when I went into system/app and just clicked and reinstalled it on top of itself and then rebooted, it worked!

[Q] Just unlocked root what now?

So I just got my Evo the other day and I got root access last night. What should I do now?
If plan on flashing to a new ROM so I need to make a backup. What all do I need to backup before I flash? Will a nandroid backup give me everything I need to one day return to stock if I need to? Also when I make a nandroid backup where is it stored? Do I need to put it on my computer? And how?
I want a new ROM that is very stable. My main things I want out of my ROM are the sprint and HTC useless bloatware gone and I also want the ROM to be able to let me use wifi tethering without paying the carrier charge. Can you guys recommend any ROMS that meet my needs?
Here is my current phone info:
Android Version
2.2
Baseband Version
2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version
2.6.32.17-gee557fd
htc-kernel(at)and18-2#15
Build Number
3.70.651.1 CL294884
Software Number
3.70.651.1
Browser Version
Webkit 3.1
PRI version
1.90_03
PRL Version 6067
Is there anything I need to update on this before flashing to a new ROM? If I flash to the newest radio version what does it mean I may have to reflash the kernel?
I am new to the world of android so bear with my questions please.
Just run a PRl update so you're up to date on it.
If you don't want sense, try out CM7 use the latest stable, as anything nightly 62+ [2.3.4] releases have a slight mms bug being worked out, other than that, everything works.
Be sure to flash the latest gapps with it.
CM7 is good? I heard it made a lot of phones run slow. Also where do I get the gapps?
Any other ROM recomendation
SalvageMod 1.2.1, just make sure to get the updated Gapps

+1 in regard to SalvageMod, but for new users to rooting, I recommend starting with a Sense-based rom. You will be already familiar with the layout and functionality, but it gives you a different look, mainly in the form of themes. I highly recommend Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5. You can view and download it from here

Ok I have heard a couple people recommend warm two point two so I think I will go with that. I heard you have to update the radio and all that for that ROM though so can you explain what all I need to do for that?
@ teh Rox:
I looked at the update tool in system settings and I didnt see PRI update but I updated my PRL is that what you meant?
Also can anyone answer my nandroid question about where the backup is physically stored?

You don't need to worry about the radios, as you'll have the latest since you came from the latest update OTA. I meant PRL, the PRI automatically gets updated, so you'll be on 1.90.
A nandroid = backup; you'll hear nandroid or do a backup, its the same thing. And if you're on clockwork recovery, it'll be in the clockwork folder on your sdcard, if on amon_ra, it'll be in the nandroid folder.
Warm two point two says you have to have the latest radio and Wi-Max versions.
My version is 2.15.00.11.19 (second to latest)
The latest is EVO_Radio_2.15.00.04.08 according to the radio tread I read.
Do I need to update my radio and wimax? Also what is OTA?
Side question:
Once I flash to a new ROM what happens when sprint releases gingerbread for the EVO? Will I be able to update and if I do will the sprint bloatware come back?

First, the radio that you have (2.15.00.11.19) is the latest "official" radio and RLS-5 will work with it. The other radio you mentioned is the one that came via the leaked GingerSense rom so disregard it. As for Gingerbread, you will have 2 options: 1 will be to accept the OTA update but you will more than likely lose root and the second is to wait a few hours or days until a rooted OTA is made available. The latter is the preferred method. As for the Sprint apps, after installing RLS-5, you will have a folder on your SD card labeled warm_2.2_optional1 or something to that extent. Those Sprint apps/bloatware will be in that folder.

Nandroid backups are for restoring the phone as a whole. When switching roms you may also want to use Titanium Backup to backup your apps + data. This way you can restore your user apps on the new rom. Passwords, progress in games, an app's settings, etc will be the same after restoring. I highly recommend the paid version, but the free version is great too. If you pay for the key, your apps will restore in the background. With the free version you have to agree to each app as it uses the standard package installer.
Also save at least one nandroid backup on your computer just in case. I also have my wimax backup stored on Dropbox as well as my computer, but that's not something you have to do.

One last question. In the instruction for Warm two point two is has a list of recommended kernels. Will the Kernel I have now work? Am I set can I just flash and be done? Should I flash to a different kernel?
Oh and also do I need to update my WiMax for the warm two point two? How do I know what version I have?

Every rom comes with a kernel as it needs it in order to function. You don't need to flash an alternate kernel, but you may want one to suit your needs. You may need one for better battery life or other reasons. I suggest reading the kernel starter guide before flashing a new kernel.
But no, you don't have to flash a different kernel.

You'll be set on the kernel. Every rom flashes a baked in kernel, and its always stable.
As for wimax, I forget the command, but if you did an OTA and fully updated before you rooted, you'll be on the latest wimax.
Ok I am about to flash. How do I get the ROM on my SD card?
NVM, I figured it out and successfully flashed to Warm TwoPointTwo...now that I am on a custom ROM do I need to do anything else? Someone told me I need to flash gaps.
You do NOT need to flash a gapps.zip with the rom you just flashed. They are usually need for AOSP based roms and NOT Sense-based roms. By the way, since you're using RLS-5, you will need to download the adfree app from the market and install it. After installation, select either revert (to see ads) or update hosts (no ads) and then reboot. You need to do that because the version that is cooked into the rom has an outdated host file which results in your internet browsing to be extremely slow. After doing the aforementioned, your browsing experience will be up to par.

But mine just has three icons and they dont have text. The three icons are phone, apps, and web browser. How do I get all 5 like in the picture?

[Q] Galaxy S4 T-Mobile ROM

Hey guys!
I currently have a AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that I just got today. I got it in an AT&T version because my dads friend owns a store where he cells electronics so he sold me a unlocked version of the phone.
Now, the phone seems fine. Its unlocked, got it at a very cheap price (around $500 then T-Mobiles $750), and it can run T-Mobile 4G/LTE but the ROM is based on the AT&T version.
I was wondering if I can have a clean copy of a the T-Mobile version to replace it (or should i just stick with the AT&T version)

If you look through the AT&T section, there are guides showing how to flash any carrier's S4 ROMs. As long as you follow the correct procedure for the AT&T locked bootloader, you can flash any GS4 ROM available; with the exception of the international i9500. It is OK to flash i9505 ROMs, but NOT ok to flash the i9500.
Some things to keep in mind: If you have T-Mobile service, the T-Mobile TouchWiz ROMs will be the only ones you can use if you wish to retain WiFi calling. If WiFi calling doesn't matter to you then don't worry about that fact. Another concern to pay attention to; because your device is AT&T, whichever particular GS4 ROM you use, make sure you flash a kernel specifically for your AT&T model before trying to boot. Also, any use of Odin or returning to bone stock, make sure you use the files and methods in the AT&T section. I'm not 100% sure on what all is compatible across variants, but in the essence of safety I would recommend using the AT&T section for downloading everything aside from the base ROMs themselves; at least until you are able to figure out what can be used between variants.

For now, im sticking with Samsungs Galaxy ROM or whatever they call it since I like their eye feature and air gestures. Ill switch to CyanogenMod eventually (when they atleast get a stable build)
For now, I just want to ask. I understand that if im going to modify my phone like kernals, I have to use the AT&T versions of all of them. Thing is, I only need to flash a stock T-Mobile Galaxy S4 ROM and thats it. I also want to keep this phone unlocked (since its already unlocked, I dont want to loose that feature)
Should I only just flash a new ROM (via ClockWorkMod or something....) and thats it or do I need a new kernel/other stuff?
If you flash a tmobile rom or any other (do not flash the international, 9500) you will need to flash an AT&T kernel.
That is what I'm doing. I also bought the AT&T s4 but have service from T-Mobile.

It almost seems that you aren't fully grasping the idea here. When you flash a ROM, it also flashes a kernel for whatever variant the ROM is built for. Just because you use T-Mobile service doesn't mean the T-Mobile kernel will work with your particular device. The ROM will, but the kernel will cause your device to be unable to boot; which is why you need to flash your specific kernel immediately after flashing whatever ROM outside of your own variants development section.
All ROMs from all sections contain a device specific kernel, even the stock touchwiz ROMs have included kernels which is why you need to flash the kernel for your device. You won't damage anything if you don't flash the correct kernel, you just won't be able to boot.
Flashing ROMs either through Odin (restoring to stock) or custom recovery will not re lock your phone, so don't even worry about that. Once you unlock it, it's unlocked.
And yes, only flash custom ROMs via custom recovery (CWM/TWRP/etc).
tl;dr, question specific answer without any answers as to "why"
TMO ROMs will work on your device only if you use the AT&T kernel, even though your carrier is TMO and you want to use stock(modded?) TouchWiz ROMs..

Yes. But you might need to unlock/enable the AWS bands, follow this thread. Or you can flash the unlocked modem that Alejandro made from my unlocked modem following toothmakr57's idea.
In my area, LTE is barely be rolled out so sometimes I get it sometimes not. Attached is a screenshot testing the unlocked modem with a speedtest.

[Q] MK2 to NC5

So I don't know if I've been out of the loop, or I'm not reading something right or what, but I need some help. I've been searching up and down and everything applies to Verizon, not T-Mobile.
I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S4. It is currently on MK2 running WICKED V10. I want to use HyperDrive RLS17. However, I have heard whispers here and there about a proper upgrade process. Everything from something called SafeStrap, to being on the MDK bootloader, etc.
I want to be able to flash Hyperdrive RLS17 (a Verizon based ROM, with carrier compatibility packs) on my current device which is MK2.
Can anyone shed any light or point me in the right direction? I've been searching for 2 days and I think I'm getting misinformation from Verizon based roms.
Is that ROM on this section or the Verizon section?

All sections. The ROM was built for Verizon, but then Carrier Compatibility Packs were developed for each carrier. So they a pinned in each carriers version, however, originating from the Verizon carrier forum.
Here it is in the T-Mobile Android development towards the top:

And here it is as a direct link:

I'm just really confused because it being an original Verizon only ROM, a lot of the questions are for Verizon. But I have seen on T-Mobile speicfic ROMs something about staying on MDL or MK2, or something along those lines. If I could just get to a KitKat ROM, I don't think I would have an issue, but my concern is jumping to 4.4 due to all the warning tape about going about it in the right order.
*EDIT* I also realized I posted this in General instead of Help. Can one of the mods please move this? My bad.
Order doesn't matter. I don't know why someone would say that . updating/flashing the tar wipes everything off the phone (except data/sd card) so doesn't matter what order you do it in. If you're on mdl, flashing the nb4 tar is going to remove everything of mdl and replace it with nb4.
Btw there is no NC5 unless weve gotten an update no one has talked about or mentioned.

I was thinking that. I was more afraid of any caveats like a bootloader version or anything like that. I see a lot of posts about running a pre-kitkat version and what not.

Thanks. Thats what I was thinking too, but ever since Knox came into play, a lot of red tape has gone up on how to properly do this. Plus I saw things about LTE modems not working if you use the newer version. Audio goes bad or something.
Just been out of the loop for some time and jumping back in i feel like warnings are coming at me from every direction.

Bootloader? I think you should be fine, MK2 modem works on KitKat but NB4 is recommended.. You won't lose audio as long as you follow the instructions on flashing the modem
Whatever this brought.

Heres a camera shot. I can't remember how else to get it.
I think its MK2 if I'm not mistaken. Wicked was supposed to make a V11 Kit Kat, but his priorities shifted to his new note and his home life. So time to move on. I'm sure this would have had a newer bootloader

You actually have the older bootloader with no Knox, probably MDL.. So you can flash the ROM and the modem if you wish
Edit: well even with NB4 full firmware you can do this but you won't be able to flash previous firmware, only ROMs, so its up to you.. Some experience better results with full NB4 package but you will trip your Knox if you update it which I don't know if you really care about it

Well I went ahead and flashed, and I'm good. Still on MK2 modem, but getting ready to flash the newest. Also, I don't want to trip the Knox. I sell my phones when I go to upgrade and I don't need people getting cranky because knox is tripped. I'll upgrade to newest OTA when I go to sell it and call it a day.
FYI, I'm having very little issues on Hyperdrive 17.1 for T-Mobile. I think its an app problem right now because all was smooth until I started restoring apps. Thanks everyone for the help!

Hey, I have the same mk2 phone as yours and I've been searching up to update to nc5 as well. I couldn't find anyone with tmobile and then I stumbled upon this post.
Just one question about this. You said you are still on MK2 modem, did u follow surge's method?? Did u use the same files as provided for verizon forum??
Then shouldn't the mk2 change to NC5?? Also, when u said u went ahead and flashed, did u mean u flashed hyper 17?? Cuz I tried and ROM didn't boot up on my mk2.
Please let me know. I wanted to go forward with this method just don't have the guts to take chances and brick my phone.
Yes, flashed 17 from tmobile version, but selected AT&T on Aroma, and didn't flash the compatibility pack. Then I followed Surges method to upgrade the modem. I also flashed the ktoonz kernel for tmobile directly after the modem, as the instructions said to do.
Hope that helps.

[VM SG3] Different modem for better reception?

Something I've never really understood (despite running Android for 6+ years) is how modems affect reception. I lived in a 3g only area up until about two months ago. I'd get 1-2 bars of 3G, which wasn't great, but it worked well enough. Now I live near Boston, and and VM's coverage map shows that I should be gettting 4G LTE. However, my phone struggles to even connect, and I often have to move about the house to get enough coverage to send a text.
I've asked over at androidforums, and have had people tell me that flashing a different modem won't get me much better results, and that the only way is to update my PRL. I've done that, and haven't noticed much of a difference.
Is there a way for me to get better coverage?

Are you on stock TouchWiz 4.4.2 right now? Are you rooted? Virgin Mobile and Boost users can try the Sprint equivalent modem. Sometimes changing helps, sometimes it doesn't. Only trying will tell. If you're on the NDC build of TouchWiz 4.4.2, which is normally for Boost and VM, and you're rooted, you could try ND8 by Odining the stock ND8 tar in the development thread. You can always Odin back to NDC if you want. You can make a nandroid backup of your current ROM and restore it under the ND8 bootloader and modem. It might require a data reset (##72786# in the TouchWiz dialer) and update PRL and Profile.

I'm rooted, on CM11's latest snapshot release (4.4.4.) with MK5 baseband. I've been putting off updating to NDC/ND8 because as I understand it, I can't downgrade to MK5. I'm not really sure why I'd ever need to though.
I might give it a shot though, following the guide Cnexus posted here.
Just so I'm sure I understand it, NDC/ND8 baseband can run any ROM, while NDC/ND8 roms can ONLY run on ND8, right? So if I upgrade, I'm not locking myself out of any ROMs?

Correct except that I know some older ROMs like maybe based on Android 4.1.2 won't be able to use the newer modem. I know others have found out where the cutoff is. I'm very sure MK3/MK5 based ROMs work fine.

Alright, thanks. I ended up flashing a Sprint modem, and its definitely better. I can actually connect, though I still don't have 3/4G service. I might end up upgrading to NDC/ND8, since I'm not going to ever go back to something like 4.1.2.

There is another forum with a very active VM S3 community. A dev there by the name of MopedRyder compiled a .zip for altering some APN and build.prop values.
I'll get you a link in a private message. Flashing that zip should get you working 3G/4G and MMS with AOSP-based ROMs.
Also, you may want to revert back to the VM modem when flashing that zip, as I don't know that it has been tested with a Sprint modem.
EDIT:
I also own a Virgin Mobile S3. I live in a strong 4G area. Before flashing the zip, I had very similar experiences as you. After flashing the zip, I had working 3G, 4G, and MMS.
The link should be in your inbox at this time. I hope you get the desired results.
May I please have that same link? I have ZERO bars on the InspireOS ROM... and would HATE to move away from it because of the signal issue. Thank you sooooo much!

[Q] Question about Stock 4.4.2 and flashing

Hey guys got a couple questions see below.
1. My first question is, Is there a way to Flash Stock 4.4.2 without using a computer and odin, my laptop doesn't read my phone, ive done installed and updated drivers, and everything. is there a way to flash it like you would a custom rom. I know i read that i could use Mobile Odin Pro, but at the same time i read that its not to safe to use that, and tbh not sure why you have to pay for it... i know there cracked Mobile odin pro and i havent tried it yet.
2. My next question is, is there a simple way to flash my sprint s3 to another career, by flashing a rom that will flash it to another carier not sure if this makes sense lol, basicly my Phone was flashed to Page plus, and i accidentally updated it and lost the flash, and i dont really want to pay to get it flashed again, is there a real easy way to flash it with with a custom flashing rom, and if my laptop ever reads my phone is there a easy way to do it with a laptop besides paying for it( not looking for cracks). My phone number for Page plus and account is still active.
3. My last question is im looking for an awsome rom, One that does not overheat my phone like Hellfire does, ive tried hellfire, CM(also nighty), Vanir, PAc rom, Carbon. and others to.

Stock ND8 and or any Rom based on TW and as long as you don't have your screen turned on for a long time it shouldn't Over Heat...

I have the stock sub cable and also a more expensive cable. Sometimes it does read and sometimes it doesn't,
Can I backup my stock Rom before flashing a custom rom, I mean I've tried it through Phil's recovery and find that once I restore it using Phil some apps and things don't work correctly.
What's a rom you would recommend.

I would recommend Tribute Rom or Wicked X 8.0.....and with the back ups make sure you have the latest Philz recovery which should be 6.48.4 and before each backup wipe cache and dalvik cache then your backups should work flawlessly

If you're already on the ND8 or NDC bootloader, then you can flash the stock (although rooted) ND8 or NDC ROM through custom recovery like the latest PhilZ. I'm guessing you're not, though.
Mobile Odin had had its uses in the past, just not handy with more recent versions of TouchWiz.

Here's the thread for flashing to Page Plus. I haven't done it, I'm on Sprint. I was having a lot of trouble getting my S2 on Page Plus. For phone it wasn't too bad, but I could never get data on and things were getting confusing with conflicting information, several third party programs on the PC, needing a donor phone, etc.
