I had a weird thing happen. Earlier today I dropped my phone from approximately 18 inches onto a laminate surface. The phone was in a protective case. After I picked it up, the power button wouldn't work. The rest of the phone was fine. No scrathes on the case, no other types of hardware failure or signs of damage. I opened the phone up, removed the motherboard and inspected the entire system. Everything seemed perfect. I inspected the power button and there didn't seem to be an issue. I put everything back together, while paying close attention to make sure that all connections were secure. After reassembly there was still no change. So I have a couple of questions:
1. Can I jump the connection between the two power button connections (which I believe is how the power button itself normally activates the phone) to see if that's where the problem is so that I can establish if the power button is in fact the problem? Or will that short something out on the motherboard?
2. Has anyone had anything like this happen, or know of a place where the power button can be bought, etc... Any suggestons are appreciated! =)

Edit: I was able to find the connections to the power button flex cable. The two terminals were loose and I was able to pull them out a bit using a wooden tooth pick. I now have good contact and the power button is working perfectly. I recorded what I did and will post a video on YouTube in case someone ever has this happen to them. I don't know why an 18 inch fall would cause this type of issue, but oh well. Fixed is fixed.

I do not know if somebody faced this problems before or not:
1- The soft-keys, dial key, call drop key, and the scrolling keys; are always while pressing them for long time does not response until turning off the screen by pressing the power button then turning on again to keep working for awhile then same thing happen again.
2- The screen is sometimes fade to be completely white & brightness more, and everything hidden until turning off the screen by pressing the power button then turning on it again
If anybody knows how to fix this matter please provide me with the solution.

I had the same exact problem... I fixed it by getting a warranty exchange from AT&T!
I have the same problem! Unfortunately my phone is not covered by warranty. I think it's a hardware issue because I changed a number of ROMs and the problem persisted. I don't know what to do, it's driving me nuts!

Ok, as far as the key problem goes, using the PDF file about HTC TyTN where you can see how EXACTLY to disassemble and assemble the TyTN I took the courage to open up my TyTN and pull up the motherboard and clean everything up and close it tightly back. However I did not completely disassembled it as the manual shows because I did not want to remove any stuff that's glued like the rubber parts and the metal tape that holds the keyboard connector. So basically, I did not reach the part where the soft keys are, but somehow miraculously my keys are working nice again! I guess the problem was just loose connections and probably it was loosing contact somewhere because keys worked sometimes and then suddenly stopped.
Anyways, it's been 2 days now and the keys work perfectly and my TyTN is not so loose like it's going to fall apart as it was before!
P.S.
I haven't noticed the white screen problem also but it's been only 2 days and it wasn't happening so often before anyways.
This issue is known -there are threads in hermes section, search for white screen..
Its a harware issue with XILINX coolrunner(if I remember it right) on the front keypad below screen.. It propably has some bad solders under it -mine went so bad that it showed only white screen until I disassemled the unit and pressed directly the chip with my fingers
Then I bought a new circuit from cnn -at the moment it had those boards for sale, not anymore. That fixed my problem.
Among the threads someone got his/her phone to operate again by putting something between the cover and the chip..
I had the problem on my handset and managed to fix it by cutting up a piece of card..be it and old credit card or whatever to the size of the recess that the chip fits in...this pushes against it nicely and since then only had the problem reoccur once...then it was cured by just putting the handset into standby mode and back to normal again
Hey guys, I cracked the screen on my HOX so I replaced the screen with a unit from directfix.com
After double checking all of the flex cables I tried to power the phone on and I am getting nothing from the screen and the vibration motor is constantly buzzing.
The only signs of life is the red LED, the three capacative buttons will light up, and the aforementioned constant vibrating. If i hold the power button to attempt to turn it off the buttons blink several times then it seems to stay on after that.
Has anyone heard of a problem like this before? Its killing me not having my HOX! I had to put my sim card in my old iphone 3gs and I have to say that this sucks really bad.
Are you sure you've connected everything correctly? It sounds like there's something being shorted! I'd recommend you to dissassembly again, an assembly again BUT THIS TIME VERY CAREFUL. Best is if you use a video tutorial if you think you're not experienced enough.

Thank you for the advice. I disassembled the phone and carefully put it back together. I took care to make sure the flex cables for the LCD, vibrator/button strip, antenna, volume buttons and digitizer were all carefully connected.
Now the vibrate function seems to work fine as it just gives me a short pulse when I turn the phone on as it usually does. The screen however, still refuses to turn on. I made extra sure that its flex cable was put in the right way and that it was secured with the jaw bone connector.

I tried exactly that and the LCD would still not turn on. I am just hesitant to return it because I know that the chances of the screen being a complete dud are very slim.

Update: So I was thinking the phone was booting up all the way, but I just saw that my computer won't recognize the phone beyond making a connection sound; I just can't see it in windows. As i said the capacitive lights stay on, but if I fold the power button they blink 15 times exactly and the phone seems to power off. Should I assume the SoC is dead or gamble with a replacement LCD?

Hi, I'm in the exact same situation you have described above! Did you ever manage to work it out, what was the solution? Any info or help at all would be great, thanks!!
I did replace my lcd+digitizer as well as yous. And I had same problem. But it does work now.
1.open up your phone . Take all parts off, separated.
2. Take battery off.
3.Now connect power button.
4. Connect battery.
5.Switch it on (hold pwbt for 2sec), mobo+battery+power button itself.
6.Now wait 20 sec.
7.Now connect LCD ribbon(bottom one),make sure it's right in, push it in far as you can.
8.Now put it righ on bezel and connect digitizer ribbon.
9.Press pwbt and see does it work. If does put rest of stuff together and be happy.
I can make phototutorial on request.
I did it few times. The battery was touching the LCD ribbon and it comes of very little but screen comes off and I have to start all over again.
So make sure that ribbon it's not getting any pressure from battery.

So after finally fixing all the other issues i had with my phone (broken screen, broken vibrate motor, broken speaker) i was finally at ease. It lasted for about a week with everything functioning until now the phone gods have again struck me down. This time i have what is referred to as a Power Cycle. Kind of like a boot-loop except the phone completely boots up into my homescreen then the power options menu pops up, and no matter if i click back or not, that **** is going to reboot on me. Its to a point where if i pop in the battery the phone auto boots. Here's the kicker though. If i take off the back case and just set it on the battery with an open back, it doesnt power cycle. But the power button on the case itself is not stuck as you may be thinking as i can depress it and the cover spring pushes it back. I've hard reset, even went back to complete stock (no root) and it still does it. the power button works (very sensitive) if you have no case on the back, but if that thing is on, it acts like the button is being pressed.
Any Ideas?
Sounds like the power button is stuck... Try taking the phone apart and cleaning the contacts. Then press the power button a few times to ensure it works like it is supposed to. Put everything back together, tighten the screws but don't torque them. Should not turn on after you put the battery back in, wait a few to make sure it doesn't. Then power it on and see how it goes.

still didnt work. i used some rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth on it. the interesting thing is, when you take the case off, if you set your finger over where the button is (making no contact) it still registers that you are touching it. this is what i think is causing it to power cycle when the phone case is on, as it believes that it is being pressed when it isnt.

I had almost the exact same problem with my Epic Touch. Ended up being a bad power switch. How handy are you with a soldering iron? If you're pretty good, you can buy the switch for ~$10 and replace it yourself. (You can also try cleaning it - several tutorials here, and the "Captivate" phone seems to have the same switch and issues. Search both forums)
Several eBay sellers sell the switch you'll need.
It seems that my power button has died on my Galaxy Nexus, which is a huge pain in the strategical locations. While I know how to turn the phone off should it shut down, I have no idea how to handle anything else. I have my friends CALL ME to be able to unlock the phone and use it.
There are some apps on Android Market that specifically state that they fix power buttons, but none of them work with the latest versions of Android according to the reviews (if there's any I've missed, let me know).
I know that the phone can be turned off using a charger, since plugging it in or out makes the screen turn on. But are there other ways to turn on the screen, since it's a phone and I'm mobile most of the time?
Is there another way to remap the keys on Android? Note that I cannot root my phone, so options like that are not good either.
Is there a way to remotely turn on Android phone with a tablet through some app? Since I'm carrying my Nexus 7 with me and it uses my phones internet connection to stay online. I tried to find an app that does this, but could not find any.

First, try pgm (slide 2 wake).
Secondly, why can't you root the device? Once you have your screen on, you can turn on USB debugging, and use to it reboot to recovery or fastboot.
Third, there's some experience from users that fixed their own device's power button.

I had a similar problem with my Samsung Captivate a long time ago. I used WidgetLocker and enabled volume wake function. It uses volume buttons to wake the screen. I'm not sure if this feature is still available, but it's worth a try. If it is not, you can ask for a refund. There are also several apps/widgets to put the phone to sleep. I used this combo for a few months before I got a new phone. Hope this helps :fingers-crossed:

i think pgm is the solution, but you have to root the phone
I've managed to fix my power button recently, its a hardware problem. Do this only if you dont have warranty and are comfortable with opening up your Nexus.
Go to iFixit website and follow instructions to dissassemble the Nexus, its quite easy, a few screws and flat cable disconnects. Next, you need to remove your power button flex cable from the motherboard, do this by lifting the cable connector on the motherboard up and pulling it gently out.
Next thing is a bit tricky and you need to have pretty good sight and precision.
On the flex cable the button consists of 2 pieces, the flex cable and the button itself, which is like a black sticker sticked on the flex cable.
I've removed the sticker and the button that is glued to it with a scalpel (careful!!) and I've found actually rust and dirt on contacts (dunno how rust got there, i have expected dirt only), and then with my scalpel I've carefully scratched the dirt and rust of both parts of the button and its contacts on the flex cable. After that I've put the black sticker back on the flex as it was before (if it wont glue tape it with a small piece of tape) and return everything where it was and assemble Nexus back togeather. And voila! It works!
Keep in mind that I didn't have warranty so it was either open up and try to repair or toss a $200 device. Also, I'm not responsible for any damage that you do to your phone, this is just a brief description of my power button fix. Hope there will be more successful repairs :fingers-crossed:

I believe i've read about remapping the hardware buttons; if you're interested, search google. I personally prefer and use smart screen on. I just wave over the proximity sensor and the screen turns on.

After I split in half the button I found oxidized contacts with green and black scurf. Cleaned it with little amount of ethyl - works perfectly!

I just did this repair and I have large clumbsy fingers. thank you! I just had to remove corrosion between the button contacts and around. i dabbed nail polish remover (i'm not sure if that is a bad idea or not, but it got my phone working!) and did a little bit of scraping. on my sch-i515 there was a some clear plastic folded over the back sticker part that i had to get up, then i was able to get the black part up without having to fully remove it.
Not really possible to do this if you wanna put the screws where they belong.
However I just noticed that the case can be removed pretty quick and pain free with just a thumbnail and a guitar pick as long a s you prop the top with the pick, and slide the strong thumbnail all along the non vol button side. I was surprised how easily the snaps popped and the side lifted up. After which it was easy to remove the glass and bulk innards of the m8.
...anyways, when I cracked one of my repair jobs open just now I found an entire ribbon from the motherboard not plugged in. The one on the upper left that come from under the motherboard and attaches at the sisterboard

This phone was recieved as a "No power up, no charge" purchase.
Hoping for another quick fix here.
When that ribbon was partway plugged the vibrate bobin continuously went, then a satisfying end to oscillating bobin vibration when I got it in place.
So it clearly has plenty of battery. Yet still refused to turn on even after the 2 minute long press of power+vol up which is suggested throughout the world to solve no power up problems. Also tried the 20 sec power hold then short vol up push followed by 10-15 sec power + vol up hold. Nothing.
I had not plugged it at that time.
Both m8 I opened today were previously opened phones and both opened easily. Planning a usb port swap if I can't get this one to work.
Anyone got any other ideas on getting the battery working let me know.
Actually, to correct this, no guitar pick is needed at all now. I can pry all with my strong thumbnail. The thumbnail is only 1.5 mm. The top is the start point, get it up so it doesnt go back in, say 2mm from back case, then the non volume button side, then the vol side sliding both sides from top to bottom in turn, (you should be able to hear each snapping clip pop out, 4 per side, as you slide. Then the phone body will pop out of the case as easily as a samsung.
