I have Sprint Galaxy Note 2 SPH-L900. I had rooted the phone using Chainfire CF-Auto-Root. I did not flash any custom ROM, did not install any custom recovery. So I just have root access and stock ROM 4.1.2.
Last couple of days, I have been getting notification very frequently that "System update available". This is the 4.3 update. I have been putting off the update by selecting "Install Later".
I have done hours of research and found varying answers. Some are saying that it is possible to use Samsung Kies to get this update on a rooted phone, however, I will lose root. Some are saying that if this update is applied in any manner to a rooted phone, it will get stuck in a boot loop. Some are saying that a rooted phone will never get notification of this update. Some are saying that the phone must be un-rooted, update applied and then re-rooted. I don't even know which of these observations is correct.
I can live without 4.3 but how to make the constant harassment notification go away?
Is it possible to get 4.3 update and not lose root?
Is it possible to get 4.3 and re-root?

I had the same thing. I did the update and lost root. Rerouted and found out that 4.3 loses the WiFi tethering. So make your choices wisely.
I'm waiting for a fix or maybe one of these gracious people on the forum will point me in the right direction.
Lost root with update.
Looks like i lost the root also with the update, hopefully is not too long before they find a fix.

Thanks for the reply. Can you please tell how did you update? Did you install from OTA update or used Kies?
Thanks,

Wifi hot spot is fixed in a stock rooted odexed version of MK4 (4.3) by lorjay. You can find it in the development section. You will need to be familiar with Odin and custom recoveries (Clockwork to be exact). And I'm pretty sure you'll trip Knox (warranty code in new bootloader). Note that the wifi fix you'll be using in his version of MK4 is the native hot spot. No more struggling with various device and network settings; couldn't be simpler.

This may be a noob question but.....how do I re root after losing root when I updated to 4.3? Do I do the exact same thing I did when I rooted on 4.1.2? Do I use the same recovery or is there a new one for 4.3? If someone could help me with this or attach a link that answers the question I would GREATLY appreciate it.
help me please im a noob

Arun, you are in luck becuase I had the exact same issue as was able to resolve. I also had a rooted sph-l900 on 4.1.2 that would not successfully install 4.3. So, in order to get to 4.3, which is worth it (trim support, gui enhancements, better menus, and just so you can say to accomplished it), follow these steps.
- flash the original stock rom. The file is called KIES_HOME_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1_265523_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
I used the note 2 toolkit by skipsoft /w odin to do this. I attempted to download this file from hotfile, but that site got shut down. Find a reliable copy of this file, then use odin to flash this when doing a "flash stock rom" operation.
- at one point, my phone kept rebooting to the samsung logo, and did not get into the operating system, so I thought I was bricked, but your still ok. I had to remove the battery, then re-insert, then force it into download mode with power+down volumme+home button. Then, it magically continued the process at the "upgrading android 1 of x" screen. Then, it will boot up to "factory".
- Now, it it truly factory and ready to accept all sprint provided updates, and yes, all the way to 4.3.
Let me know how it goes.

Actually I have given up trying to get an update because of all the gyrations involved. I have too many apps for any backup program to backup/restore reliably.
I found a thread where someone had posted a method to get rid of the constant upgrade notification. Now I do not get update notifications. I will stay on 4.1.2 till I upgrade the phone or a better rooting method is found.
I did consider flashing the phone with CM10 but even their stable builds have problems as indicated by users on their forums. Now that CM has got new funding, hopefully, they will release more stable builds.

Aaah...Can't find the exact post. It was here on XDA forums. Here is what I had essentially done:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1581614
It was renaming the otacerts.zip file. But the post I had actually followed was more detailed. It explained in detail how to use the ES File Explorer to modify the directory permissions etc.

I'm having the same issue...constant reminders, but when I allow it to run, the phone remains 4.1.2. The ONLY reason I ran the same root you did is so that I could run Trev Mod WiFi tethering and nothing more. I've had no desire to overclock or anything like I did on previous phone, but I wish I could do certain things like removing stock apps...so I'm not going down the path of running a custom ROM.

You quoted me saying I'm only running 4.1.2, so I have no idea of it'll run on 4.3. Go do it now and report back.
Hello my names Aaron, I rooted my galaxy tab 3 (sm-t217s) a little bit ago then unrooted just because my wifi wasnt turning on.. I had to do a stock restore through odin to get it all working again. When I did that I got the new kitkat update and gladly updated it. Now again though I want to root it so I can again do all the great things you can do with rooting!
So my questions are:
Can I root it running 4.4.2 the same way I did when I was running 4.2.2? Will it brick it if I just put on a custom recovery the same way as before and let that install superSU?
I would just like to know and if not then is there another way currently to root it?
I couldnt find anything about it that is why I am posting about it.. must not be a very common tablet?
Anyways thanks for your time and help!

Either use towelroot to root from within android or you can still flash twrp from Odin and root that way. Twrp may set warranty bit, mine was was already tripped so I can't say dor sure if it does.

I used towelroot on my tablet, it does what it has to do. Does not reboot, but when I use Root Checker it says that I do not have root.....any suggestions?
I was rooted with towel root fine under the June 2014 update to 4.4.2, but I mistakenly took the update to NH4 while rooted. My device seems to be fine, but I lost root and Towel root will not seem to root me again, no way, no how. My warranty bit is clean, and I don't want to trip it, but I'd love to have root back. Is there anyything I can do on NH4 from within Android to get root back? TIA
How did you do an unroot through Odin and which version of Towelroot did you use to root it again? I have the same tablet.
I have SM-T217S running Kitkay 4.4.2. I've tried almost every root app there is (Kingo, Towel, ect.). They all say my device isn't compatible. And when I go to update under settings, it says that my device is running unauthorized software and that I need to use Samsung kies to flash. But it has no root & no custom software, everything is normal. I have tried using computer to root but still nothing. What could I do to fix it?
Hey guys, new to rooting and having a little bit of an issue. I recently rooted my phone successfully by using Kingo to root, CWM to backup, and installed CyanogenMod using their installer which worked like a charm. Then I attempted to root my wife's AT&T Galaxy SIII JUST using CM. Installed just fine, but didn't root her phone. I get the message "No SU binary installed" when I attempt to open SuperSU and have found that her phone is indeed not rooted. Why?
Well I did some research and found that some people had this same problem and just went to Dev options and activated root access from there, only problem is, I don't have that "root access" option in the Developer settings. (I have opened Dev options and looked through them 1000 times looking for anything related to root access. No luck.) So at this point I attempt to root the phone using Kingo as I did with my phone. This results in a perpetual "Downloading... Do not turn off target !!" message on the phone and Kingo "waiting for device..." on the Kingo app on the computer.
I've also been told that Super user access could be denied by KNOX but I have had no luck in removing KNOX by using all methods found online.
So... my question is, how do I successfully root her phone from here. I have looked everywhere on the internet for a solution to this problem, but can't seem to find an answer. For those of you who may be able to help:
Samsung ATT Galaxy S3
Ver. 4.4.2
CyanogenMod 11.0 d2att
Thanks for the support and I hope I can get this resolved soon.
EDIT: I resolved this issue by using the towelroot method
for a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge (AT&T SM-N915A) Has anyone used ODIN to flash 4.4.4 from Lollipop (which I read doesn't trip knox) and then used Kingroot to get temporary root and then install Safestrap? I didn't really find any custom roms, but when booting from Safestrap, wouldn't root still be available even if you installed the stock Lollipop rom as the SS rom? Or would it be too difficult to remove the recovery if that's present in the stock LP rom so it doesn't mess with SS if you boot from it?

hey guys,
I am from Vietnam and i just 've bought the SM-N910A (said that from ATT) in Vietnam. I used RootChecker and Phone INFO to get to check my phone.
The result is my phone was ROOTED!!!. I restarted some times but the ROOT is still accessed.
I tried to use Root Explorer to copy/paste from/into system folder, it's ok like other rooted devices.
I'm following xda-note edge and see everyone's saying that NO way to permanent root ATT note egde.
I also dont know what method the seller used to root my edge, but i think it's permanently rooted.
I've NOT try to unlock bootloader neither install recovery. There seem to be no official method for ATT edge. I am afraid bricking my device.
I upload some screen to show you my note. Thanks and need your advice, guys

When you moved data into /system did you remove it before rebooting, or did you leave it in /system and were still able to boot?
If you could enable USB Debugging and open a shell with ADB and type "ps", then post the output, that may be a place to start.
Recently, kingroot has been able to get root on my note, but after 5-10 minutes I get ANRs and the phone crashes, then I have to re flash with Odin to go back to stock. I have logcat logs up to where it crashes as well.
I'm on 5.1.1
Edit
5 minutes after I posted this AT&T tried pushing a security update. Probably to fix this.

I have 5.1.1. After rooting the phone repeatly bacause after 30 seconds of being rooted the phone rebooted. I went into download mode (home + dwVol) the status showed that was official and that it was locked. I don't know if this information is relevant but sharing is important.
This is a method to obtain working root & Super Su by chainfire with up-to-date binaries for the
AT&T Variant of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (SM-T217A) on 4.4.2
Let me make very clear, I did not develop these apps!
This is just a method I found after searching & some trial and error.
I thought it may be helpful if it were available here on the forums.
I spent too long looking for a method that still worked on an OTA up-to-date device etc.
Nobody bothers for an old device with a locked bootloader. :crying:
I'm sure everyone that has had or currently has this model knows that Kingo Root works (at least for partial root), and a big thanks to them for their effort & hard work.
But if you're like me, you want the freedom to use Super Su or any of the other available options out there for managing permissions.
Either way, thanks to Kingo for a temporary solution.
And thanks to gatesjunior you can have your freedom of choice back.
(Although I highly recommend that you use the version found at the bottom of the post, because the newer version I tried stalled at the 1st stage.)
If this method ends up working for you I think it would be worth the $3.99 to support the developer by purchasing his app!
(If you feel adventurous you can attempt using the google play store release, but I had no such luck.)
I had originally tried to use Super Sume version 6.5 with Kingo Root but, it just ended up losing my root access and I had to re-root my device.
Yesterday I attempted to run Super Sume v. 9.2.6 I believe, but for some reason it didn't recognize it Kingo, or Kingroot as being installed on my device.
So I ended up uninstalling it and trying an older version I had read worked, and it succeeded!
Instructions for obtaining Root & Migrating over to Super Su are as follows.
If you are currently rooted using Kingo Root, un-root from within the Kingo app 'Superuser' and proceed to uninstall the rest of their apps..
Install & run Kingroot 4.5; When this is finished, restart your phone and run an app to verify you have root. (I use the free version of Root Checker.)
This may not be necessary but at this point I re-installed Busybox.
Install & run Super Sume v6.7
Restart & Verify Root!
:fingers-crossed: Success! :highfive:
If for some reason your device failed to achieve root using Kingroot after removal of Kingoroot; you may have better luck leaving your device rooted with all the Kingo Root apps installed until after you install Kingroot.
(Although I'm sure most people would advise against it, I actually skipped the un-root/un-installation procedure until after I had installed Kingroot 4.5 because I my battery was at 9%)
Honestly it shouldn't really matter though Super Sume is supposed to remove everything like that anyways
Required APK's can be found below.
4/12/23-Edit: Replaced broken links with working ones from my google drive.

I figured it would probably work on all the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 variants but I only have the AT&T model.
If you don't want to flash your system(or can't in my case) this is probably the next best thing.

Let me know if updated link works, otherwise... I will update OP when I get home.
I know this thread is quite old but it helped me get back on track thanks to r4e_hafintosh and his great instructions. I am working with a Galaxy 3 7.0 SM-T217A (AT&T) version. Wasn't working right so I did a full reset. Tried to get TWRP installed and things went to hell quickly. Biggest problem then was finding a stock 4.2.2 and/or 4.4.2. I finally located both here: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=search&s=T217A so I was able to use the repair files and get back to stock 4.4.2. Then I followed instructions from r4e_hafintosh to get KingRoot installed along with BusyBox. I'm currently waiting for SuperSUMe to install and it appears I'm back on track. Thanks to r4e_hafintosh, the unknown person who posted the repair files and everyone who has posted at XDA and other Android sites that allowed me to finally hunt down what I needed. Probably a small victory for those much more well versed in customizing ROMs but I big win for me. Hopefully the next person trying to find stock files for the AT&T SM-T217A will find this post as well. Thanks all!
How can we unlock bootloader for it
