I am going out of the country to Mexico. I have never used an international sim card with my phone. Can I use one in Mexico. My phone is Unlocked and rooted. It is Verizon CDMA.
I highly doubt it for the simple fact its cdma. Most countries use GSM. I may be mistaken but I'd check with Verizon just to be 100% sure

That is what I thought just wanted to confirm. My phone is not international but I thought it would be with a different international sim card

The reason you're phone is not "international" is because the radio chip only communicates via certain frequencies. It is a function of the hardware that is physically soldered to the logic board. Changing a sim doesn't make any phone international. Whether or not the phone has a chip that supports the frequencies that the SIM is trying to use is what determines if you'll get service.
Also, Verizon only uses SIM cards for LTE service, not the phone. If you ever get your hands on an iPhone 4 or 4S that is on Verizon, take the SIM card out. The phone will still work fine. It doesn't even use the SIM card (because 4s and 4S's don't have LTE).
You posted this in the wrong section dude
Went ahead and reported it, asking it to be moved.
No worries though. It happens!

I know someone is offering a boot unlocks and regular sim unlocks with GSM models. Not sure if it will work with the CDMA model.

He said he can unlock Verizon locked Plays as well.
He just said on the 12th page post of his unlocking forum that the GSM baseband isnt supported.

I am just asking and double making sure cause I kept seeing people using the word "unlocked". And I know unlocked has multiple meanings. (boot, sim, ect)

Don't quote me...but I think you would be better off getting the AT&T play as its gsm as is T-mob, while Verizon is cdma.

Quick answer? NO, absolutely not.
Longer answer?
Basically the SIM Slot seems to be physically uncoupled from the chassis. Further, the chipset that would be running the GSM is replaced with one for the CDMA. Whether it can function as both is a question, but the chip is actually different (from my teardown to look, the chip numbering is different from the tech/repair manuals).
I would, in general, assume that no phone that is on Verizon (unless it specifically says "World phone" or "World Edition") can be used on T-Mobile. CDMA vs GSM silliness. Different frequencies, different methods, different technologies.
So while the bootloader unlcok could work for the CDMA model, the SIM-unlock wouldn't.
Interestingly enough, there are still traces of the GSM code in the phone's diagnostic menus though.
i have a friend that has a phone repair shop in my hometown. i called him when i found a play that is cdma thru verizon. it is a world phone and has a sim card slot. he said that as long as its a world phone version it can be unlocked for gsm use in the united states. idk im getting one tonight and im gonna tinker with it and once i get it all going i will let everyone know on here if it can in fact be unlocked for gsm use in the US.
Well???

well turns out that the phone ended up not having a sim card slot and the person that i was supposed to purchase it from had no clue about anything. i did not end up buying this device. sorry!!!!
This was stated years ago, the R800x has a sim card slot but it is turned off on a hardware level. It is a non-functioning sim slot.
So I'm thinking of buying a Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
I know it has a sim tray so i'm wondering if it can be unlocked for T-Mobile.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sim tray maybe but the vzw one is cdma and the GSM one is...well..GSM.
Different technologies! Not compatible.
I have the Verizon phone and yes it does have a SIM card but it uses different radios. Verizon uses CDMA/LTE and T-Mobile uses GSM so you can put whatever SIM card you want in there but since it uses different radios it won't physically be able to talk to T-Mobile (or any GSM carrier's towers)
btw, what happen if you travel away USA in a country without CDMA?.
At least, the CDMA iPhone have a simcard tray but it's locked until your operator wants.

Starting with Verizon's 4G LTE phones they all require SIM cards. They were also used in 3G global phones (my old blackberry and droid pro had them) but the CDMA Galaxy Nexus isn't global so you'd just SOL.
well.
nope. it won't work cause it's not CDMA...

@[email protected] can't believe people are asking this question. The phone has been out for over 3 months now.
Besides, the SIM card slot is specifically for LTE... as in, the SIM card is an LTE SIM card. LTE, not HSPA+.
I can only think, because the AT&T (HSPA+) model would be more prolific among sellers, that you'll have a better time finding a better price than a Verizon (LTE) one.

Then you have no service. Grab a cheap GSM phone and pre-paid SIM.
Try the yellow or the sky blue Galaxy Nexus. Those ones will work on both Verizon and T-Mobile.
Thats odd cause I have done it before

Back when verizon did both GSM and CDMA I had a verizon phone that I got to work on tmobile. I think it might have been a windows phone, honestly it was a while ago. I had to pay for a network unlock code and patch a radio or something....anyway, just wanted to say that it is in fact possible. My phone did brick in about two months, but that might have been from getting it wet...anyway...Good luck!

Total non sequitur. The phone in question must have been an old "world phone". The Verizon Galaxy Nexus never had any GSM radio whatsoever.
Also you bumped a 2 year old thread.

For the CDMA GNex you would need either a CDMA or neutral carrier/MVNO (such as StraightTalk, Tracfone, etc.). I have a CDMA ex-VZW GNex (now running Unlegacy-Android 7.1) that I am taking to Tracfone (replacing a Tracfone feature phone) because Tracfone uses a mix of carrier towers (depending on location, either T-Mobile or VZW). My current feature phone uses T-Mobile towers - because I am bringing a CDMA phone under BYOP, I have to ask the carrier (Tracfone, in this case) to create a custom SIM Kit for the brought phone, and thus have to communicate the IMEI and MEID of the incoming phone (this information is in the phone under Settings). Yes - this also applies to lifeline feature phones supplied by Tracfone/Safelink (if Safelink supplied the phone, Tracfone is your MVNO). If you want a GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus, you would want the maguro (the Galaxy Nexus in AT&T Mobility or T-Mobile guise); because GSM is more popular overseas, they tend to get exported compared to CDMA or W-CDMA (Verizon or Sprint, respectively).
I have Verizon, a Motorola Razr (Not MAXX) and it is crapping out on me, running slow, not sending picture messages etc.
My boyfriend has a trading post type store and he bought a brand new Galaxy S3 but it's through AT&T. When I put my SIM card in the S3 it asked for a SIM Pin for unlocking.
I have experience rooting a Nook Tablet so with some directions I'll probably be able to do it, I just don't know where to even start. Do I just unlock the phone or is there a way to switch it over?
Thanks!!
Ashley
It seems like you just need an unlock code to use it with your old SIM.

Try taking a look at this thread and see if you can get an unlock code from AT&T.

So I called AT&T and they gave me the unlock code. I used it and it said unlocking the mobile network was successful. I tried to make a call and it said that only emergency calls were available. I restarted the phone and when making a call it said no mobile network can be found.
Ohhh you are putting a Verizon sim card in it? I don't think that will work since Verizon's network and lte use different technologies than at&t and the sim card is encoded to use the respective technology :X

That would mean you can insert a gsm sim card into the RAZR maxx because it is a world phone. However, the at&t s3 does not support CDMA, which is the network technology that Verizon uses. That's probably why you are getting no mobile network when inserting your Verizon SIM card in the AT&T s3.

The gsm sim that comes in Verizon global phones is there so when you travel out of the country you can use a cdma phone in countries that have a primary backbone that is gsm. In the us your phone uses Verizon's cdma network. If it does not see that network it will then look to the sim card to see if global gsm networks are detected.
To my knowledge this is going to be a no-go. If you have not done so, clean up your sd card, toss a factory data reset at your razor. These android phones are pretty tough.

The tmobile version is GSM whereas sprint/Verizon are CDMA. These are 2 totally different technologies. As far as I am concerned, there is no way to run a gsm device on the cdma network or viceversa. They use different frequencies, etc.
However, I may be wrong so let's wait to see if some with a better knowledge supports my claim.

My cousin(in his youthful stupidity) is with Verizon, he has a Motorola Droid(more stupidity) and for some strange reason it has a sim slot, and it is populated with a Verizon sim. I'm not sure why, maybe they do that so they can use phones that aren't normally CDMA? But then they'd need towers and spectrum for GSM. Who knows.
I actually sold an ATT S3, unlocked to someone on ebay and they tried to use it on vzw prepaid. Of course my ad said clearly it was ATT, and unlocked. I didn't think about needing to state it would NOT work on vzw. Your situation is a bit different however.

Verizon/Sprint phones are CDMA but the new 4g LTE phones from them are using a sim card slot for the 4g LTE network ... (correct me if im wrong obviously)
on side note: wonder if anyone knows how to flash the phone to verizon unleased unlimited plan $50 unlimited everything ?
Yes, the New 4g LTE phones from Verizon and Sprint have SIM Slot, and can be unlocked to use with other Carriers just like just At&t and Tmobile phones. so Sprint/Verizon phones have both GSM and CDMA chip.
Why would you buy a bad ESN phone for $500?? BAD ESN means LOST or STOLEN Phone.
You buy a stolen phone from eBay and you're surprised you didn't get what you paid for?
Stupidity.
Well being the genius I am failed to open the phone and see the huge sprint logo there. :silly:
It seems he is just running a tmobile Jedi rom and i just looked up the device id from the phones properties.
My fault guys. But not that it is a sprint phone that has been flashed to vzw prepaid. How do I activate? the MEID number that is displayed after the #*06# does not work on the vzw site or over the phone.
My S3 mini broke. Now I thought to get an S4 mini, but I can't figure out which one would be the right one.
I am using a plan in the US, ultra mobile, which is on the T-mobile network I think. I also often use my cellphone
abroad with other sim cards. I've seen that there is a 16GB version available - SCH-I435 from Verizon.
I can't figure out what bands this phone uses.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S4_Mini has no info on the bands.
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SCH-I435ZKAVZW-specs says:
LTE: Bands 4/13 CDMA 1x/EVDO Rev A. 850/1900 MHz.
Are there any other 16GB versions? What about root/rom? Any significant differences? Which would you recommend?
Its more like do you want LTE or 3g support, any international unlocked version will support all bands
Afaik verizon its CDMA and dont use a sim card therefore can't switch sim

I see. That would be bad. So the verison one can not switch SIM? Which means it can't be used in europe?
This post implies that there is some kind of SIM on the SCH-I435. But I don't exactly understand what works and what doesn't.

If the info is of any help, I have a GT-I9195 model (currently connected to Spark, NZ) that claims to have 16G of memory and, in this case at least, is unlocked. It takes a mini-SIM, but that's not unusual now days.
Given that most phones in NZ are sold unlocked and people expect to be able to swap SIMs from one phone to another as well as take their current phones to another network, I'm guessing it supports most bands.
