[Q] Genuine doubt on OTG.(w/o Hub). - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I know that in order for the original kindle fire to recognize OTG. devices, the following must be available:-
1. Rooted kindle fire.
2. ROM with Hashcode's 3.0 kernel .
3. microUSB. to USB. OTG. cable.
4. Powered USB. HUB.
Since the kindle doesn't give out enough power to drive flash drives/keyboards etc., we resort to the powered HUB. Well, recently I stumbled upon a "Micro USB Male To USB Female Host OTG Cable + Micro USB Adapter Y Splitter". I was hoping if we could connect the Kindle's charger to the microUSB port in the above mentioned cable and use the provided Female USB. OTG. cable to connect a peripheral like flash drive..
My doubt is this. Will connecting the kindle's charger be enough to drive a flash drive/keyboard? Or will it simply just charge the kindle and not give power to the OTG. device?
A link to the cable cannot be given as i'm a new user..An ebay search by copy pasting the name of the cable is enough.
I run a kindle fire with gedeROM ICS. flashed.
SORRY IF THIS IS A NOOB/STUPID QUESTION! Thanks!

So, just to clarify, if the kindle is connected with the original amazon charger, it can detect otg. devices connected to it, yea? (assuming we have 3.0 kernel). Ill try to post pics of the cable asap..It may help people.
If this works a 100%, then this is really an even cheaper alternative to buying a powered usb. hub..Just buy the $6 cable and you're ready to run otg devices! Pretty neat.
Thanks for the reply!

I got it to work in the morning but now it doesn't want to work and freezes/reboots when I plug it in and the other end into a computer which outputs 12 v. dang it. here is a pic of it:

Why would you wanna plug it in when you're trying to connect it to a computer? Cant u just directly connect the K.F to the computer using a USB. to microUSB. cable? I thought that you needed the extra power from the wall charger only to drive peripherals connected TO the kindle..

No I'm using the computer as a way of powering the USB hub. I can connect the USB to the wall as well though.

Ok, although I don't think using a hub is neccessary if you are planning to connect only one device at a time. After all, this method eliminates the need to buy a powered usb hub...

USB OTG Adapter

Has anyone been able to find a USB-OTG adapter for the Galaxy Nexus similar to the USB adapter for the Galaxy Tab (pictured below), i.e. one that's just a compact adapter without a cable between the two sides?

You use that one with the Galaxy Nexus?
Looks like it has a MicroUSB-A plug, which shouldn't fit into the Galaxy Nexus's MicroUSB-B port.

What you are looking for is a USB Accessory Charger Adapter, which exists in the USB spec but does not seem to actually exist in physical form.

No, what it is is a special USB OTG adapter that has three connectors, a micro USB plug to plug into the host device, a USB socket to plug in the peripheral device, and a micro USB socket to plug in a charger. It also supplies a special resistance on the ID pin to the host device to let it know that a charger is connected so the host does not supply a voltage on the VBUS. Without this special adapter with the ID pin resistance, the host will supply a voltage to power the peripheral which will not work with the charger on the VBUS. Thus this special adapter is needed. This is defined in the USB OTG and Battery Charging specs, but so far it doesn't seem like anyone is manufacturing such a thing.

Would anybody be able to help make a cable to allow this functionality? I have Muscular Dystrophy and want to use my HTC Evo 3D with the specialized HID USB mouse emulator that's integrated into my wheelchair. This is how I control my desktop PC.
Because I also use the mouse emulator and voice recognition the battery life of the phone isn't that great. I would like to power the phone with a cigarette lighter adapter plugged into my chair.
Thanks!

Ok, So i'm using my Nokia N8 USB OTG cable that came with my Nokia, it short and works perfectly with my Xperia S. It reads all the USB Memory cards i've connect as well as my Logitech Wireless Mouse. I've also connected it to my Belkin Mini 4 Port powered hub and then connected my WD 500GB HDD. Just to plug in the HDD obviously i'm going to be short on power. What I want is a Y type cable, that will do USB OTG and Charge my phone and also provide additional power to my HDD to power it. Anyone seen something like this ?
u already have a powered hub. try an input power (eg charger) to ur hub.
if u're using Y cable u dont need the hub, just plug the one male (the one with two cable) to the USB otg cable then the other one male (the single cable, named the power cable) to PC or a charger.

[Q] How can I run MHL adapter and wireless keyboard at the same time?

I don't want to shell out for the smart dock and I think this 4 port usb hub(non powered) would work. I would plug the USB OTG cable in to my note 2, then plug in the USB hub, followed by my Logitech K400 in to one of the four port, then a MHL adapter to one of the four USB port, run power to the MHL adapter, then an HDMI cable from MHL adapter to the TV when ever I want to surf the internet using my phone using wireless keyboard/mouse and displaying it on the tv. Will that work or will I need a powered USB hub?

How did I miss that! So if I get a female micro to male USB will it work? I mean will the HDMI signal still pass thru the hub out to the MHL adapter. Let me go watch the note 2 connectivity where that guy hooks half a million thing thru his powered usb hub.

no, the mhl adapter for our phones is the reason we have 11 pins in the micro usb port. the mhl adapter uses the 6 extra pins and thus the phone doesn't transmit hdmi signal through the 5 normal pins... also the mhl adapter only works if your phone is being charged through the extra usb port on the adapter itself.
I know you next question will be well then can I connect the usb otg adapter to the port on the mhl adapter. well for that you would pretty much have to build yourself some converters. you would need to supply power to the phone while at the same time supply power to the usb items you are trying to use. this presents a peculiar problem usb otg relies on shorting the grounding wire. if you make it shorted no charger will allow current through, if you don't short it the phone won't recognize that it had to become a usb host controller. you might get away with using some diodes to make the phone think it's shorted while the chargers think it's not, but I don't know enough about the whole process to know if the software on the phone would utilize that correctly... bottom line is I don't think it's possible.

I was hoping I could use the logitech 400K while using the MHL adapter to TV. I guess I need to spring for a bluetooth keyboard or get the smart dock for 50% off while it is still on sale.
you could however take apart a dock and see how it's built (the Samsung dock allows for both usb and hdmi)

I also have an powered OTG cable, but did not help.
I think that the cause is lack of voltage. With a pen or sd card with adapter, works without problems. Even my camera gives to connect. Always with the OTG cable, of course!

That's a shame. Might need to pick myself up a cheap laptop (maybe one of these lenovo flexs') or a wireless hard drive, now in theory the wireless hard drives are powered so, if it is a voltage problem it might work without activating the wireless function.
Just weird that it would work fine on my nexus 5 but not on the tablet. No solid hdd light when plugged into the gpad.

Ah cool, i'll hold on a few more days for this powered one to turn up.
I think it would work if you used USB 2.0 A Male plug to 2 dual USB A Female jack Y splitter Hub adapter Cable, the W male in charger, the two one on the hdd and the other in the Pad, i will try it very soon as soon as i get back to my house...
i also going to use usb extension cable coz the charger is way too long...
Have you tried it with a powered USB hub? Seems like that would address the power issue.

Hi,
Got my cable today (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B5T4A60/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
Works a treat. The cable doesn't charge the tablet unfortunately whilst its reading from the drive, but at least i can see my hdd now.
I also tested it using an anker Astro3 and it works fine.
Good result, enjoy your movies .
