It is interesting to see some of last year's models (S3, Note II, etc..) getting Android 4.3, but not Galaxy Note 8.0.

Dude, at least you got 4.2. I'm on the AT&T variant and I'm still on 4.1.2. I'm seriously fricking bummed that we are being left out in the cold on this device. Not a sniff of 4.2, 4.3, or KK.

Absolutely nothing special about 4.3 to look forward to.
It does look like the note 8 has been left behind for now. This is very frustrating. Nowadays when you buy devices, you expect it to receive updates in a timely manner, especially with higher end models. 4.2.2 is now almost a year old and there are now several other version updates that have been released since then. This also goes to show that its not just carriers that are responsible for the delay of releasing updates. I have the wifi only version and with this, its Google, then Samsung, then to consumer. And it sure isnt google, so that only leaves Samsung. So for you guys on 4.1.2, thats probably on the carrier for not releasing 4.2.2.

Why feel bad
4.2.2 seems pretty stable. In a world of change, I rather have a device work well than by something that is broken when you open the box.
Features don't mean much, when programers lack the ability to produce quality work for the hardware. My 10 year old 64bit laptop did not get any benefit from 64 bit OS versions until much later, after the hardware was considered legacy. A new laptop to replace it would be a bit faster but, would lack the features of dual hard disks and expansion ports for upgrades. Everything made now has limited expandability due to hardware constraints, more than OS ability. Only a few tablets have SD cards, and rather push 300+ PPI true 1080p for a slightly noticeable wow factor. Eventually there will be 4.4 out for the Note 8. Not sure I will go to it as it is limiting more than expanding on what I am accustom to with 4.2.
All good points but there is one thing that you arent accounting for....security updates. With each release comes with security updates and patches. Believe me, im all about stability but with an android version thats almost a year old, that is leaving us vulnerable to security vulnerabilities. Its one thing to not update for certain features, but nowadays, updates are critical for security. And with android continuing to increase market share, we are increasingly becoming more of a target.

Security is a myth when you install apps. Out of the 100 apps I have installed, only 10% don't require permissions of some sort with WIFI or Network. The best security is being offline and turning off apps that you don't use before going online. There are a number of security apps that assist in making your OS be more secure. It is that 2 years ago nobody thought of securing Android as all the virus and malware were on the Windows platform. Even with the latest OS platforms you need apps to control firewall, file and browsing protection.
You also have the ability of watching which apps send data over network. Even though they have permissions, the apps usually perform such background data transfer for registration and troubleshooting. Avast does do a wonderful job at blocking both Network, 3G and Wifi. In fact I had been in scratching my head as to why my Directv remote would not connect to my DVR receiver after enabling the firewall and diabling Network and 3G on all my apps. Then it hit me... LOL.
As for data manipulation... most all apps need it to save settings or store data. So, for 90% of your apps, you cannot block data manipulation.
As for contacts and personal stuff... I keep that in my head, a tablet or smartphone should not have any important personal information... I have gotten over 30 years being able to recall and do my daily life's tasks very well without the need of small devices to get in the way.
If I IM, Chat or do anything social, it is on a hosted site. I never use apps to be use on any of my devices. This way my contacts are with the provider to be used only when I am using their services. This way if I am lazy with being online I have no trouble with data being shared when it is very little that I have available. Plus when it comes to cleaning out, a simple Full wipe and restore can be done weekly if I choose to without having to deal with restoring data and what not. Using the cloud is easy and trouble free when you properly use it.
True, however, security is multi tiered. 3rd party security apps, firewalls, antivirus/malware, app permissions and password protection are all examples of different tiers. However, all of those combined cannot combat security vulnerabilities within the OS itself. Android updates, like any other OS updates, provide security patches within the OS code that all the others cannot address. And as we continue to sit on older android OS with known vulnerabilities that 3rd party apps cannot fix, we only increase our chances of having those vulnerabilities exposed.

I need 4.3 for trim ... It makes your tab faster. .. Why wouldn't any one need that?. .. Also gives Galaxy gear compatibility with the new bluetooth LE support in 4.3.... gear is more useful for the n5100 than for a note 3

It is just the fact that guys there's not a lot of ROM development going on on Note 8.0 side (check the developer forum section, and you will know what I mean). Now if there were several 4.3 custom ROMs available, I won't even bother Samsung's official 4.3 upgrade, but there are almost none. I know that Note 8 is not quite popular device amoung the developers, thus not a lot 4.3 custom ROMs available for our Note 8.
It is funny though my almost 2 year old S3 got 4.3 upgrade, while my Note 8 still on 4.2.1 and waiting...
You're lucky, mine still have the 4.1 still no update for 4.2 I'm kinda tired waiting for the update, Im in Asia

Hi guys,
I have completely ditched Samsung after letting me down with the first Galaxy Note.
They did not open source their drivers at the time of ICS. So the devs could not get project butter to run.
So we were stuck with using Samsung roms if you wanted any buttery smoothness.
It has been a long time and I have only used Nexus devices since.
How is Samsung doing now?
Did they come around? Are they open sourcing their drivers?
Is the CM team for example going to be able to fully support the Note 10.1 Exynos processor?
Cheers,
Daan

Is your Note 3 supported by AOSP rom makers?
I didn't find the butter back then. My Huawei Pad had less free ram, in order to buffer more screen contents, methinks, but nothing got smoother.
But I should have considered the situation on the Note about custom roms, before buying one.
Will take a look, for academic reasons, whether Experia Tablet Z owners have custom roms, that was number two on my list, and cheaper.
This is currently the best tablet on the market. Why cripple it with an AOSP ROM? Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I hate touchwiz with a burning passion. I'd much rather it be closer to stock Android. The pen should still work, as it works with the Note 3, so you won't loose any functionality.

Cripple it? No, you will improve the device and any of the functionality that you think you are losing is equaled or improved on with other apps once you are rooted.
My S4 is significantly better after installing Kit Kat vs. Touchwiz. I am undecided on rooting my tab 10.1 2014 due to some security requirements.

That's the thing... you will waste so much time trying to get back the functionality the tablet already has out of the box that it's not worth it. I have CM 11 on my S3 becuase is makes more sense on a phone, but on this tablet with the features it offers you're just wasting the potential of this device. When I pay $600 for something I want everything working and working correctly (excluding some of the S-features) sounds like a Nexus 10 would have been a better fit for you.

I got tired of waiting for the Nexus 10 2. It was my first choice of tablet with the rumored specs. In favor of the Note 2014 - it is on the market now, it was a price I was happy with and it has an SD slot which the Nexus would not. Plus if you want a 10" tablet it is really the only Android option right now. Is it perfect or my ideal tablet? No, clearly not.
Also to your point concerning price. I am with you - the tablet is not worth $600 to me. However I picked up the 32gb version through the Groupon deal. For $420 I think I am satisfied enough to keep it (still making that determination). Or at least I do not regret spending the money.
I am not a big gamer nor am I trying to do any coding on the tablet but to me the Note 2014 comes pretty close to being a laptop replacement. It is not all the way there but I can now travel, attend meetings, etc. without feeling too handicapped if I do not have my laptop with me.
What little I have read on the subject it sounds like rooting this tablet is pretty easy and then just a couple of apps to expand the stock functionality. Hell, I will probably spend more time trying to setup the tablet the way I want through Touchwiz, Nova, or another launcher than if I simply rooted it.

You are right it would be problem solved. Unfortunately I need an "unmolested" tablet for some of the networks/systems I connect to. A rooted tablet will trip security warnings and will be blocked.
Guys, guys, guys! This thread was marked as a [Q]!
It has gone completely off topic.
Those with S4's, S3's and newer Notes, how is your experience with AOSP roms?
Is it easy for open source devs to develop for them?
It doesn't matter who likes what, or why you can't root because of security issues.
The question is: will it be easy to develop non touchwiz Roms.

The answer will be no. The device is very expense and will not get much support in general. Also there seems to very little supoort for the Note 3 with the Exynos Octa. As others have stated I do not see the reason for wanting AOSP on a Note device. You will lose almost all support for the pen and pen specific apps since the cost is so high for the device it seems a waste to not use the pen.
When are we expecting this to drop for our device? Ready for our device to be more snappy as my old n5 with 5.0 is much faster than my Note 4.
Is there going to be an development for this device in time? I know it is tough for some Devs to get their hands on these phones so I didn't know if that was why there is basically nothing, or if there is some other reason.

I haven't been keeping up with Lolipop release dates or anything so I couldn't say when that will come out. But I look forward to it... I hope. LOL
There's several reasons for the lack of dev's for our Sprint Note 4 and that has been discussed already here in the forum. The speed difference between the Note 4 and the Nexus 5 could very well be due to the lack of software overlay and features on the Nexus device compared to the Note 4 which leaves plenty of processing/memory resources available to run a much lighter software. This is a given. But in reality I don't see much any lag on the Note 4 so I'm perfectly fine with it. I would literally get depressed and panic if I had a vanilla Nexus device because I've come to love all the features and advantages of the Note series phones. It's a good thing we have a choice in the Android world!

With it being a Sprint push, most likely
My guess is middle of february.
So outside of the material design language and project Volta (think I got that right), what else are we missing from 5.0?
IMO...feels like another push just to get the latest version of Android but due to TW, I don't think we'll see much difference.
Judging from what I have seen on my old n5 as far as the difference in responsiveness and snappiness, this will be a huge update, TW or not. 5.0 is about twice as smooth as 4.4.4 on my n5.
Fair. I was rocking the developer preview on my N5 before I got rid of it.
Just as others have said, Ive read the same on sam mobile early 2015.
and by then Google will announce Android 5.5 Lolita
I'm sorry, but I think some of you can agree with me on this. I will ask a question at the end, but for now, just... Samsung. So we hear that Android L is READY for thesince 4 but the carriers haven't decided to release it, even though the LG G3 just got the update...
Then, I hear that Samsung has the update ready and "done" for the S5 and Note 3. But no Note 4?...
And THEN I hear that Samsung is STILL working on the coding for Android L for the note 4! Best part, Samsung does not do a SINGLE thing to announce to its viewers what there doing for Android L, there just going off on there own little path doing what they want. The S6 Is coming out soon, why would update the S5 first then the note. Note users just got this phone, because it came out in October.
Honestly, I don't know about you guys but I feel completely put off and disrespected. I mean really, they have ZERO announcements for Android L and YET they update other phones before there Note 4 which just came out.
I've been waiting eager for this update since December, and nothing. People said soon in January, and nothing. And I was eager for the end of February. Nothing. This is getting to a point where I feel like users are going to start become irritated with this company.
So do you guys have any concrete evidence that gives a hint towards the update? I apologize for my rant, but all of its true and a lot of people I know who own the note 4 are just as fed up as me :/
I won't defend or make apologies or gripe about the delay. There was a rumor that the Oculus/Samsung Gear VR kernel developers were holding up the release of Note Lollipop. My guess is that were tweaking trying to resolve crashes and heating issues.
I also hear rumors of streamlining the update process but you also have carrier bloat and Google releasing Lollipop later. I do hope the bloat is reduced on all the aspects but I also want my S-Pen to function.
Now I will complain about the following:
KitKat was not so perfect for Google or Samsung. I didn't like the limitations on sdcard media or inability to follow links or the attempts to run apps within apps and hose the proper back and recent app jumping. There were fixes for that use Xposed framework modules. At any rate, if lollipop is more if the same, I'm in no rush to jump to lollipop without Xposed fixes for Samsung devices.
I hope Samsung listens and doesn't keep caving to Google's will like they did with the menu button. I'd hoped they would have continued the option to keep menu or recents like they initially did with the s5. I looked closely at the s5 when it came out and there was a lot to like. I checked the menu/recents swap feature and walked away confident that Samsung did a good thing pleasing all with the swapability and black background in menus but I heard that went away with updates so I'm not so encouraged going forward without without Xposed. Please ban the white background themes already.
I have a Note 8 on 4.4.2 and this on 4.4.4 which forced me to use Xposed to switch the menu and home buttons back to the classic Samsung way on the Note 4. Can't understand why Google thinks recents key is so great when you could just program a long press to switch back and forth between the two most recent apps. Oh yeah, they broke that too, meaning I have to install two Xposed modules to fix that; I did. Shame on you Google; shake on you Samsung for following after trying not change.
Edit: Just a little off topic but just watched the s6 unpack and I'm not liking the departure from removable battery. It's good that they didn't forget about fast charging with the move to wireless charging built-in but the glass back? Fingerprints? LOL! Apart from the best Amoled screen, 14nm processor, faster/efficient and cutting edge camera, Samsung is losing some of it's uniqueness and character. Admittedly, I rarely remove my battery or rear cover with the battery lasting all day. May take some getting used to the idea but I was hoping the rear cover would be removable and battery pull and replace still a user option. Fixed memory options wouldn't be bad if the price doesn't bite. Faster memory without the permission restrictions limiting apps and read write workarounds would be gone. Maybe it's only the one percent that really cares about the chassis changes and the components and specs will offset?

Im not in any hurry for the OTA 5.0 . I use the Hybrid-X rom and it works much smother than the stock rom did, waaay tooo many bugs in the stock rom that was delivered with the Note 4 (at least the sprint version). I have Lolipop on my Nexus 7 but do not see what all the hype is about, no major pluses or upgrades for what I use my devices for. I can wait for Lolipop to show up then get turned into an even better rom!

Where should we know? My best guess is yeah, probably.
Samsung has so much device fragmentation I highly doubt it - even if they consider this their flagship tablet they've already announced a new version of it. Plus, there's been so many deep discounts on the device lately it seems thought they move on firly quickly to the next model. I feel like Samsung doesn't have the support I've grown used to with Nexus devices :/
Plus, not being a true octa-core (I.e. it's a big.little implementation of one fast quad paired with a slower battery-friendly quad core) it doesn't seem like the tablet I thought it would be. It's still pretty awesome and I don't plan on replacing it for several years but I doubt it'll get M.
I just hope someone steps up to be an official maintainer for some of the devices with, say, cyanogenmod, so we start getting some official nightlies.
Wow, are we seriously fretting already about the next major Android update that probably won't even be available on Nexus devices before Christmas? Does anyone at XDA spend more than a few hours enjoying the device they have before worrying that they're being ignored by the manufacturer (or carrier, etc.)?
I'm starting to hate Android updates, always someone complaining about things.
Who knows what goes inside the head of Samsung engineers and managers? My personal view is that as soon as Tab S is succeeded by its 2015 replacement, which should be this summer, the 2014 Tab S won't be getting any new updates from Samsung. I personally wait for Cyanogenmod to start producing the nightlies for the T800, just like they do for T700. That would be the best upgrade path.
Samsumg always provide at least 2 years of updates in my experience. If the Tab S2 gets it, which is more than likely, the Tab S will too.

I am with you on that, totally. Samsung is pushing their Tizen OS and it's just a matter of time before it become the official OS, especially for all their new devices. ANDROIDPIT has a good write up on M, most of the features we always wanted from the launch of ICS, but it's great to see Google developers paying attention, as we saw improvements to the features in each OS release after ICS, in particularly the security/permissions of applications. Kudos to Google! I'm not sure about Samsung, they've been acting like Apple lately (if you know what I mean).
I'm all for device longevity but so what if we don't get M? Nobody promised us M when we bought this tablet, which is great the way it is as far as tablets on Kitkat/Lollipop go.

I also have a Nexus 10 running Lollipop 5.1.1 and it runs better than the original v4.4.x it came with. The only issue I can think of is the size of the system partition and that could be addressed considering the amount of included bloatware. Besides my Nexus 5 is getting Android M and that cannot be that much different in power than a Tab S.

Got this phone almost 2 years back and waiting ever since for a proper root. I can't believe this phone didn't get an unlocked bootloader inspite of all the efforts and bounties. At&t is really stubborn it seems. Never going to buy an at&t device. New things now. Sold the Note 4 for around 220$ here in India ( 15,000 INR )
And got the oneplus 3. Never thought I'd move from Samsung to oneplus but I've gotta admit it's a splendid phone. Amazingly fast. Got a display brighter than note 4 ( surprisingly ) Even the fingerprint scanner is so much faster than the Note 4. And best part I just had to put 120$ more for it. You know the best part? The oneplus 3 bootloader is unlockable and can be rooted on DAY 1 itself.
So adios to the Note 4 community. Until next time.
You gave up because of root? Why do you need it so much? Marshmallow isnt even a big update on any phone. Also one plus 3 has no sd card slot, lower screen res, crappy camera...you gave that up just because there is no root?

I mean to be honest here the oneplus 3 has 16mp camera and as a Note 4 owner the Note 4 definitely sufferers camera quality in low lighting.
As for the 1080p screen a lot people give oneplus a hard time. Honestly it was a great decision for them because is uses less graphic performance which means it can load a game faster than it would on a 2k screen and it's not much of a difference. They still both look beautiful!
Oneplus comes with 64gb of memory and come factory unlocked and the bootloader is unlocked and Oxygen OS is better than Stock Android. People will make custom roms and it will see an AOSP rom of Android N and root way before its even thought of coming to the Note 4.

I still don't understand how people use Android without root! Why do they use Android without root! I mean there are plenty things you are missing, but first thing, how you are going to install AdAway without root? Do you like a phone with lots of ads? That's like cancer for a phone!
I completely understand OP's frustration, though I don't understand why he couldn't root, he seems India, and G version could be rooted, but whatever. I sold my i9500 just because there was no custom kernel for it, sorry no offence, but Android is meaningless without XDA support, I mean at least to me. But there will always be people who just install different apps and be happy with it and think that's great and achieving something
In any case its great to know that he is liking the OP3. You won't believe it I myself have read full reviews of GSMA and PA, and watched at least five or six Youtube review videos, just because I liked the phone. But the display of the phone seems pure garbage, seriously no sRGB, over 8000K temp? Hmm! Probably could be fixed over OTA, but still! The camera is bound to be better than Note 4, cause its a flagship phone from OnePlus which is released in 2016 in comparisons with a flagship phone which was released two years ago! And basically any OS close to stock Android bound to be better than TouchWiz I think, I am just so tired of it. However, after looking at the whole package, it feels like a different phone from a different league. My main sadness is even after looking at every possible company I could, I couldn't find a phone which suits my needs, darn!
Sold my wife's AT&T note 4 variant yesterday and we couldn't be happier with our new Tmo variant.. Screw you AT&T, never again! We can actually say we own this phone; in it's entirety. Should be illegal to sell locked down phones. You have stolen precious usage time from us and we will wait no more.. Bite me AT&T.. Root.. blah.. blah.. Viper4Android.. blah.. blah.. Ha! Ha! Ha! ( maniacal laugh).. Screw you!!!! (Mic drop)
In my opinion rooting a phone is a huge security risk. If someone gets a hold of your phone with an unlocked boatloader, they can get anything off the phone.
People write news stories and ads pay for those news stories. People write apps and ads pay for their time writing the app. If you block all ads, you are saying, you want everything for free, which is a little selfish, in my opinion. I don't think it is ethical to block all ads.
That said, some apps and sites' ads have gotten out of control, I uninstall nagging apps. I use samsung browser with the plugin to block some ads, but not all.
No root required.
My only need for root is to block some apps from getting excessive personal information which they have no right to anyway. But that is coming in marshmallow...
So... No need for root.
I lost my Att Note4 last Sunday and bought the N910T (Tmobile Variant) this week. I over payed for it ($200) the spen was missing but I knew it was genuine so I figured I'd pay to replace that and after getting home in the dark setting it up I noticed very very light screen burn in which is killing me now that I know that it's there. But I now have root. Running Dr. Ketan S7E/Note5 rom 6.0.1. Waiting on my Spen to get here next week.
To all those above
1) The camera quality is good. Not as good as Samsung's flagship s7 but it's pretty decent
2) You might be surprised after reading this just like I was but the op3's 1080p display beats the Note 4's 2k display. Its brighter, has vibrant colours. Just that 2k is a bit sharper. Nothing that u can notice. But overall the op3 display beat the Note 4. Compared with 3 note 4s. Also compared with s7 edge but yeah here the op3 display wasn't as good. But hey that's manageable for half the price.
3) I didn't give away the Note 4 only due to no root availability, but also coz SD 805 was getting old, and slow. You can't imagine how amazingly quick the op3 is. Especially the fingerprint hahaha seems like I've come from the 1990s in the Note 4 to this wonderful fast finger scanner on the op3. Everything. I repeat , everything is better on the op3 than the note 4
The processor
The smooth OS
The root availability ofcourse
The display ( surprisingly )
The design
The fingerprint scanner
The camera
And all this is after personal usage and comparisons
But yeah I miss expandable storage but 64gb is enough for me.
Hence. Its a win win situation for me
Plus you guys really don't know how important root is for an Android phone.

If anyone tries to misuse your phone u can root before hand and set up android lost as a system app.
The battery life too on the op3 is brilliant due to the light OS
I get 5.5 - 6 hours of SOT everyday.

You gave up because of root? Why do you need it so much? Marshmallow isnt even a big update on any phone. Also one plus 3 has no sd card slot, lower screen res, crappy camera...you gave that up just because there is no root?

I did after the first week of owning it when it came out. It's been sitting in its box unused ever since I couldn't remove the bloatware and prevent apps I want to use from accessing permissions they don't need (read: can't install Xprivacy)

Not to tell you how to waste your money....
But you purchased a high end phone when it first came out (~$800) and have let it depreciate (worth about ~$200 now) without any use since because of root?

It was a gift. and yes. I should have sold it, absolutely, but I was hopeful.
Making the switch myself now. Was going to go note 7 but after hearing airlines are/will be banning its use and continued problems I decided to get an inbetweener in the oneplus 3.
The random restarts were just too much. I tried trouble shooting if it was an app and came up empty. The annoyance of having to use a password to simply see the time and current activities (calls, messages, etc ) when I wake was just too much. I would have given this phone a few more months but marshmallow update has made this useless for my work.
I could live without root but this last month has been far too annoying to deal with especially since I need constant contact with business, sleep or not.
