[q] What does CWM "format /factory" do? [solved] - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I noticed that in CWM, under mounts and storage, under "format /system", there is a menu option to "format /factory". What is that? Is there a "/factory" partition? Or is that just the same as factory reset? How would that be different than the "wipe data/factory reset" option from the main menu?
Thanks.

Its not the same as a data wipe. It contains an efs folder with you IMEI so do not delete it. i dont know why it is there. I also dont exactly know what it is.

From what I know, it wipes your IMEI, leaving you with no calling capability. YOU'LL REGRET IF YOU DO THAT.

OMG, thanks for the warning. I was getting an itchy trigger finger and was thinking about wiping everything out, including that. LOL

[Q] Different factory reset methods

So, I have searched all over XDA but still haven't found an answer. Is there any differences between these 3 methods or do they all do the EXACT same thing? Does the "wipe cache partition" wipe the dalvik cache?
Currently running stock 2.1 (1.47.651.1) and would like to do a COMPLETE factory reset and clear all caches before I upgrade to 2.2 OTA. Which one of these methods is the most thorough and complete?
1) settings -> privacy -> "factory data reset"
2) hboot -> "clear storage"
3) recovery -> "wipe data/factory reset"
4) recovery -> "wipe cache partition"
That's entirely uneccesary on a stock update.

You may consider it unnecessary but I would appreciate an answer to my questions.

Fair enough. Storage will wipe your sdcard iirc. I'm not sure if there's a way to clear the dalvic cache on stock. At least there was some confusion w/ clockwork where people were using it's "factory reset" option and it's version at least doesn't fully wipe that cache, it's separate.
In any case, the OTA is a bunch of patches for the most part. You can even find a text file in it with settings for its scripts to wipe the part that needs wiping.

Help: New ROM = Force Close Everything!

Hey guys so I just flashed this rom on to my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1175842
It looks amazing, but how do I get it to work without all the force closes?
Nils says this in the thread:
"If you choose to flash over without a wipe and have lags, FC's, things missing, or things just don't work right then flash again with a complete wipe"
What does he mean by a complete wipe? and how do I do this? Thanks everyone!
Use Rom manager(found in market) boot into recovery. You will see 2 wipe options Data and cache partition. Wipe both 3 times each. Still in recovery click on advanced. Wipe dalvick cache 3 times. Then install rom.
Full wipe

You don't need to wipe each thing 3 times; it's the same code executing, so once is perfectly fine.
anyway, like MagnaCore said, a full wipe is:
Factory Reset
Wipe Data/Cache partition
go to advanced
wipe system
wipe data
wipe dalvik cache
I think that's where they're located; can't remember 100% for sure tho.
I'd do what the poster above me said, and /system is actually in the "mounts and storage" menu in recovery.
Ah that's right couldn't remember where it was for sure. Thanks for the correction.
No problem. Always a good thing to remember to wipe, since it isn't covered by the wipe data/factory reset option. IMO it's better to be more thorough with WHAT you're wiping as opposed to doing it multiple times..

Exactly.
I usually do the factory reset, wipe data/cache, go to mounts, wipe system/data/cache again, and then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache; just to make sure I got everything.
Bmw, you have .92 hboot, yes? You'll find force closes with this if not.

CWM - Explanation of wiping bits...

Hey guys,
Sort of a noob at this still but getting there but just wanted a bit of an explanation on some of the things in CWM.
The wipe batt stats is pretty self explanatory but I've heard from some very term android users that this does nothing? Thoughts?
The other 2 things were, wiping the "cache" and the "dalvik cache" I know what the word cache means but in this application what are these referring too?
One last thing was, are the mounting options for backup purposes? As in, if you mount the "sd-ext" will it then back it up? Same with the other mounting options??
Thanks in advance guys.

The cache wipes temporary data, while the dalvik cache wipes kernel files which is recommended you do when flashing a kernel.

Fully wipe before flashing a new ROM?

What's the best way to fully wipe before flashing a new ROM? I don't mean wiping from cwm. In my old phone which was the atrix, I could fully wipe using fastboot but the gs3 is different.

The quickest/most efficient/safest way to fully wipe is using the wipe menu in cwm or twrp
Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache, then go into mounts & storage and format system all in recovery
What does formatting /data in mounts in storage delete? I tried looking for the guide I saw weeks ago. I Just need to know what to backup (pictures, music etc)

The data partition... It's not a needed step because the Wipe Data / Factory Reset does that, but I do it anyways...
Ok so because it's redundant I won't lose my pictures and music because I don't lose it after a factory reset?

None of those steps will wipe your internal or external SD, but the options for that do exist in recovery...

Please help me define "FULL WIPE"

Hi All,
I may be thinking too much, but I have the following concern on my mind... you always hear people saying "FULL WIPE" .. then you hear some other members saying "Wipe your SD"... or dirty flash.. etc...
I was thinking I was "FULL WIPING" each time I load a rom, but I may be wrong?!?
I use TWRP and do the following method...
1) Select Wipe
2) Wipe/Select "Factory Reset"
3) Wipe/ Select "System"
4) Wipe Cache & dalvik cache...
& thats it, thats all I was doing..
Then, another member told me to "Wipe my SD"
I just want to know what the CORRECT way is?
Thank you very much!
You're preforming a full wipe just as you are. I do that 3 times before a ROM, but that's overkill. It's just a force of habit

the way are doing it is the correct way. sometimes if you are just upgrading to a newer version of the same rom you can just wipe cache and dalviik cache but even then i alwys do a full wipe. keeps out the little bugs.

Many ROMs like Carbon wipe caches and system automatically with a dirty flash

Thank you everyone for your responses.
Some people should stick to one set of terminology instead of recommending improper steps!
Thank you very much!
I mean, think about it... "Wipe SD Card" Sounds like your supposed to wipe your actual SD card if your a rookie.. Should always be refereed to one way..sorry I get so specific sometimes LOL
Im not afraid to say im the rookie! lol

Just to muddy the waters a bit - at times I see the wipe SD card recommendation when people are having issues (e.g. phone says you have no storage available when you do), or when dealing w/ fat32 vs exfat situations. In those situations the interpretation of "wipe SD card" as meaning you should actually wipe your SD card is quite accurate. One of those context-dependent things I suppose
When I used system wipe in twrp I would lose root and twr. Is it still safe to run toolkit to root again and install twrp recovery or should I inject a rooted stock rom and use goo manager to flash twrp again. I am confused. Help please!

System wipe doesn't touch recovery, so you may have done something. Also what ROM did you flash after wiping because every ROM that is flashed in recovery is pre rooted

Never wipe back to front
Remember that. And tell your girl that too. Very important. Lol
