[Q] First time Android user, Nexus 7 rooting questions! - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello everyone, I'll start off with a little introduction and I apologize in advance if this is the wrong section for my questions. First off my name is Chris, I've been a long time apple user. I've been with apple since the iPod Video. I've always jailbroken my devices and currently have a 5s and iPad 3. I'm very tech savy you could say so undergoing a process that maybe technical I'm not sure of the rooting process for androids, But i'm sure I'm more than capable of.
Anyways this will be my first android device ever, lets take a moment and thank my girlfriend for buying it, well will be buying it this weekend as a christmas gift. From what I've been reading the nexus 7 is an amazing tablet, and as my first android device I'm glad to hear all the positive reviews.
What exactly is the rooting process? Do I need anything extra beside the device? Just curious on that since I know its a different device all together but for both the xbox 360 and ps3 you need outside supplies to apply their very own rooting I guess we can call it.
On my jailbroken devices, what I mainly use it for is tweaks, themes and emulators.
What exactly does rooting provide for me? Like the positives or erm similarities to jailbreaking a iDevice?
Is it possible to root the current nexus and firmware? I know over at apple jailbreaking is prevented through firmware updates and currently not possible to jailbreak iOS 7.
Does android also do this?
I believe these are all my questions for now.
Little facts about me,
In my 3rd year of college, IT major/web developer.
Hacked/Jailbroken/Rooted? Devices
iPad 3
Xbox 360(flashed)
Nitendo Wii
3ds via supercard dstwo
psp back from the old school days with pandora battery
Also looking forward to being apart of the android community, and owning a nexus 7.

This more or less automates rooting your nexus 7.

If you root you can have (mainly):
Custom Kernels (a modification of Android's kernel) that let you make deep changes on the device, for example over or underclocking the processor and GPU.
Custom ROMs (a modification of the device's system image) let you change many things in the OS, but not as deep as a custom kernel (you can't overclock or undervolt the CPU or GPU by only changing the ROM, you need a custom kernel for that)
If you want something deeper look for it on Google
Sorry for my english, since I'm from Argentina

I would also recommend the wugfresh nexus root toolkit. Just make sure you update it after first start.
You need to unlock bootloader that means wiping your nexus completely. Then you can root using the tool.
I would not install custom roms on a nexus, you´ll anyway get latest goodies from google. However,
- AFWall+ firewall is very good for privacy protection
- AdAway gets rid of most ads
- Greenify saves battery and keep device smooth
- Orbot can enable tor routing for specific apps, such as orweb browser
Just follow the toolkit guidelines to first install pc drivers etc and you´ll be fine. Good luck.

Thanks everyone, But custom roms, would that be like a custom firmware? What exactly does a custom rom do or a specific or best custom rom out there?

Custom ROM basically=the os

Here's a copy of an email I sent to friends that bought a Nexus 7:

Thanks for the topic.
I've a question!
After making root at the N7, are there any problem in upgrading Android via OTA?
Thanks :silly:

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Many people seem to think you can only root wiith flashing TWRP over stock recovery. You can easily root with stock Android and stock recovery. Just in stead of 'flash' TWRP use the command 'boot'. That way you temperary boot TWRP via adb fastboot and with usb-cable attached. And than can flash SuperSu without loosing stock recovery. (Provided you already unlocked bootloader).
To make it easier for future OTA's and keeping root. Just before upgrading from by Google server pushed OTA 4.4 to 4.4.2 I bought Pro version of SuperSU and enabled 'Ota Survival Mode'. Worked great, after OTA still root. But off course it's wise to first keep an eye on issues and updates of SuperSu before applying future OTA.

My personnal :manual to temperary load TWRP in Dutch. Hopefully translate workes. Perhaps I can translate when back home
TWRP recovery tijdelijk laden zonder te flashen over stock recovery:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------
In TWRP zips flashen:
---------------------
3.Vervolgens 'Swipe to confirm flash' uitvoeren
5. Reboot. (Als SuperSu geflashed heb je nu root).

[Q] Rooting failed after flashing to 2.51.1 UK

I accidentally flashed my rom into the new UK U3_2.51.1
The result is that I can't obtain root access by following the rooting thread.
The process failed after the:
./exploit.bin
My defy would be brought offline, and the root access was never achieved.
I also tried flash back to the U3_2.21.1 rom, it seems that will brick the phone(so I had to flash back to U3_2.51.1 to revive it...)
Could anyone give any suggestions ?
ps: Does anyone know any method to unlock the sim lock without paying for it?
Thank you so much.
Hopefully, we can figure this out jboogie is stuck here today
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Maybe you already did it but: have you tried with the LAST version of z4root?
Hopefully z4root includes an updated exploit.bin... just a thought.
I tried z4root 1.3, doesn't seem to work.
It's been a common knowledge that this rom is currently unrootable...
shouldn't be so desperate to flash next time ...
is it possible to repack the sbf by replacing some files with rootable files? just a thought... not sure if it's doable
I recommend not update. It does not make me, that problem.
I have the same problem that you can not have a root on the phone.
Root without my phone 60% of people use.
French
Je déconseille cette mise a jour. Elle ne ma rien apporter, que des problème.
J’ai le même problème que vous, impossible d’avoir un root sur le téléphone.
Sans root mon téléphone pers 60% de son utilisation.
My Defy came with 2.51.1 preinstalled. Is there a way to root this one already?

Man i have only worked with the Blu Advance 4.0M A090L. if you have the version with letter (A090) or with any other letter it won't affect the process. just make sure it's A090.
Now i'll make a resume of the process. you can check all what we are doing in the Magisk thread here in XDA (https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445). make sure to thank them if you rooted successfully. you probably know that there's no way to root this phone with conventional methods. So i was about to break my head when i found how to root it. Still this is all posible thanks to the Magisk developer.
As a disclaimer, remember that everything you do starting here is under your own responsibility.
The process consist on patch the boot partition of the phone with the root files instead of the system partition as all the root programs usually do. The system partition of this phone is impossible to root.
You will have to find the boot.img file either by downloading the firmware and extracting the file or googling it (it is safer to download the firmware and extract it than to download the single file).
Here the site where i downloaded mine: https://www.needrom.com/download/blu-advance-4-0-m-android-6-0/
NOTICE: If you are going to download the firmware, make sure it's the same version of the firmware that you have ( i mean, A090x). maybe if you flash a different boot file something could go wrong. (it didn't happen to me, but just in case)
After have found the file you must transfer it to the phone either to the Phone Storage or to an MicroSD. We will patch the partition through Magisk Manager (An apk) then we'll transfer it to the pc in order to flash it by fastboot to the phone. Magisk Manager will act as Superuser Manager. All done if you are here.
There's a big diference between Magisk and other Root Apps such as Kingroot. Magisk root it's called systemless, wich makes it undetectable for some apps if you wish so. however some apps are so old that won't detect this root even if you want them to. that's why me, as a personal decision, choosed to switch to normal root instead of this. (i really liked Magisk, but i wasn't able to use some old apps that i needed.)
As i said that was a brief resume of the process, if you want something more detailed ask for it, i'll be pleased to help you. (besides the detailed instructions, i would upload screenshots for help you).
I will attach the magisk manager apk and a platform_tools .zip wich contains the updated fastboot file for flash the boot.img
So this is it. i really expect you to don't go through troubles while rooting. Good look!!:fingers-crossed:

If you are using a sim card you would just have to pull out the card and there would not be any puk code ( this is how i do in my country, it could not work on the states but you can try) About the files, there is no problem if you download them by your own. I just added them here to avoid you to waste time.

Hi you should consider to unlock bootloader, then find a chinese forum, because huawei and honor is a common brand to them. I find usefull info on their forum regarding this brand. But you need to use web translator. After you got the info, please share on xda forum so the others can use it.
Unlock bootloader (probably Not possible because ist Huawei)
Get boot.img, Patch ist via magisk, Boot the Patched Image, direct Install from magisk.
But since its Huawei you probably will Not get root

Question (REQUEST) Pixel Watch system dump.

And blah blah blah aside, I think you can create a system dump of the Pixel Watch, just like they've done with other watches in the past. Unfortunately there are no factory and OTA images and the Pixel Watch only supports wireless ADB natively due to being based on Android 11. How possible is it to get a dump of the Pixel Watch?
Please.
Maybe helpfull to get some infos about folders and files...
Maybe lets start with 1 or 2 folders... example:
Code:
/system/priv-app
Is it possible to backup with ADB to PC?
Something like
Code:
adb pull /system/priv-app
?
If not...
Code:
ls -a1l
This Linux Command still work?
Thanx in advance.
Best Regards
Meanwhile few partitions are dumped, look into this Thread:
Pixel Watch successfully bootloader unlocked
Shiny Quagsire has successfully unlocked the Pixel Watch's bootloader via the pogo pins (which ended up being USB like people suspected)

system.img I can easily extract under Windows with 7Zip Tool.
I have no idea how to extract files from:
Code:
vendor.img
product.img
system_ext.img
Maybe somebody can help? Please.

I managed to get a dump of the Wear OS 3 Preview arm64 emulator from Android Studio, maybe it will help. There wasn't much I could do other than ask for help with the people working on the system dumps, unfortunately I couldn't do much more so I've decided to buy the watch.
There may be something of interest:

Lienage OS for Samsung Galaxy A13

Hi, I have a Samsung galaxy a13 and i want to install lienage os in it, but in device list galaxy a13 is missing.
I'm waiting on it as well
You Can try to find unofficial builds of lineage os and similars custom roms, but the lack of custom recoveries for this device can make the process far from easy. Since most of the time you may want to install twrp on it to make the process smoother.
I'm waiting for this too
I'm still waiting for the custom rom for galaxy a13 4g since the system that is not very compatible with its hardware is not stable, however I wonder if lineage will have the ram plus or virtual ram for you
I'm from Mexico Galaxy A13 4G with 128GB of storage
I'm waiting for TWRP for the A13 (SM-A137F) and then, hopefully, the lineage OS is available and also important is a root solution to clean the device from unnecessary apps (google etc.) , install afwall (a firewall) and other important apps to have control over the device. Now the device has control over over me (because of google).

It's a pity that I don't know how to program or how to make the special rom for the cell phone. I think only programmers know how to do it.
I don't understand why there isn't just a generic lineageOS you can install onto any device. Why do we have to wait for someone to create a 'special' rom? Or maybe I'm just retarded and I'm just not finding the right tutorial?

I get that. But at the same time, there is a limited amount of chipsets and cpus that are available. And, afaik, the lionshare of android phones run arm. There are generic linux kernels for x64/x86 that can be used on any system. Sure, they are not optimized for a particular setup, but they can still be used.
Most of these phones: https://www.gsmarena.com/results.php3?sChipset=85 have the same exact hardware, just slightly different configuration. A rom for one of those phones should work fine on this one. I'm just not keen on being the test dummy.
There's translate.yandex.com if for some reason you are unaware of such websites.
Been trying to compile lineageos on sm-a137f (mediatek) phone. It’s not the easiest thing to do to be honest. But give it some time and hope to have something that works
