Can rooting help your battery life?

I just rooted my phone and installed CM10a couple days ago. I love jelly bean and having my phone debloated.
My question is.... are there any roms or settings on the roms that can help me get get better battery life? The battery life on my gs3 is good but not great... I selected the powersave feature on the CPU governor, turned down my brightness, turned off gps and bluetooth. I have been thinking about installing juice defender but I have had it previously and got tired of turning it off when I streamed pandora.
I am a pretty heavy user... about 1-3 hours of screen time per charge. I have seen some pretty rediculous stats out there and would like to be able to achieve a full 24 hours. :fingers-crossed:
I had my gs2 rooted and it seemed to get better battery life than the gs3 (rooted vs rooted). There was no comparison when it came to stock vs. stock.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Could you please elaborate how I should go about switching to that setup from kernal version 3.0.42 and the nightly CM10?
I have also had problems figuring out how to properly backup with nandroid or titanium. I can never get the backups to load
I am ready to try pretty much anything to try and get some premium battery life and performance.

Basically ya download the up to date versions of the aokp ROM and the KT kernel for aosp jb. Then ya open to recovery and first go to backup/restore and make your nandroid. You can decide whether or not you want it on internal SD or external. Once that's done ya wipe your system & caches like ya did for cm10. Then flash the ROM. After the ROM then flash gapps & fix permissions and reboot. Let the ROM settle and then boot to recovery, clear cache again and flash kernel then reboot. My instructions are a broad guideline though. I'd make sure to fully read both the aokp & kernel OP'S to get a warm and fuzzy on what your doing

seems like you are new at this so let me add a new thing, the S3 has amazing battery currently 9 hours up time and 1.5h screen on time and still 50% left and that is very light usage. Usually I listen to music play games watch movies and after 12 hours i still have about 10% left.
For starters cycle the battery a few time. Charge 100% and let it die 0% not charging in between, take out the battery and put it back in. Let it charge to 100% and and do this a another 2 times during a week. This will will use all the cells in the battery and should give you a boost. I have herd following above but charging while off may help, but cant confirm.
The next thing to do is remove bloatware or app you will never use, some of these apps will just load up in memory and use up your battery. Most apps can be disabled in Settings > Application Manager > All. Things like Allshare Play can be disabled, some apps like video hub may have gotten an update that needs to be removed before it can be disabled, this is the same as freezing in Titanium Backup. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DISABLE BECAUSE THERE MAYBE NEGATIVE EFFECTS.
This is what I have done and my battery has been amazing and never use power saving mode, actually i took it a step further and downloaded system tuner and disabled non essential apps like Vplayer from even booting at start-up.
Flashing different kernals and ROM can greatly improve battery life but you loose OTA and forced to wipe which i got tried of doing so i stick with stock. Waiting for CM10 to go stable then i will switch. The S3 stock is still snappy and never lags and for me battery life is very good.

I cannot figure out how to change or add lockscreen icons. and yes I have looked at the lockscreen option on ROM control. I can post screenshots if you dont believe me lol

We believe you because those lock screen options haven't been implimented in the ROM yet. If its a must have for you I'm pretty sure ktoonzes aosp jellybean kernel will work with CM10.

Lol well that explains a lot. Its not a must have but it would be nice. Hopefully they implement it soon.

One other question. My network constantly switches from 4g to HSPA to 3g. When my phone was stock it would stay on 4g (lte) 99.9 %.. is this normal? I would prefer it to stay on 4g. I also think it might hurt battery life since its constantly switching even though lte is a battery hog.

What rom are you on? I'd love mine to switch to 3g the majority of the time, LTE is such a hog, there's no way that switching it down is going to use more battery than staying on LTE full-time.

I have recently installed cyanogenmod 10.1 onto my galaxy s3. The battery life since then has been very poor. If I leave my phone on without even using it, it drains about 1% every couple of minutes. When I look at the battery it says that the process of "phone" is taking up a huge amount of battery. Can anyone tell me why this is or how I can fix it?

Generally these issues are user related and not ROM related.
I was so frustrated with some of the ROMs when I first started out but then realized I was doing a few things wrong (mainly because these ROMs, including CM10 have very decent battery life).
First, I would recommend a clean reflash:
factory wipe / reset
wipe cache (some say twice)
wipe dalvik cache
install ROM
after rom loads, wait 5 minutes (don't touch at all) then reboot
now you must wait.. sometimes it takes 24 hrs or so for a ROM to correctly load.
Not sure how true it is, but some say to now drain battery down, then fully charge.
At any rate, I follow these steps all the time and works great!
Also, keep in mind that most of battery issues are user related.. so think about what settings, apps and kernels are being used on your end before question a ROM. This is why waiting 24 hours or so before installing all of our "crap" will give give the ROM more time to settle.

Just to piggyback on spenny88's reply, exactly what did you come from (stock?) and how did you wipe and flash?
This is all key as to how well your device will perform.

I have noticed something similar. I am coming from stock. I am going to guess my battery life is in the neighborhood of 10% less. I wiped everything before I installed CM. That said, this feels so much faster than stock.

Same Battery Issue on p1 (TMobile original Galaxy Tab 7.0)

Having the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 (p1 in Cyanogenmod). "Cell Standby" is taking as much juice as "Screen", and I am using Wifi only. I don't even have a sim card in the device. Wish there was a way to disable Mobile Networks without disabling Wifi via Airplane Mode.
I installed through Rom Manager as upgrade from CyanogenMod 9.1 with wipe. I will try the recommendations above and report back.

Try the latest nightly (or RC4) of CM10.1. The battery life has definitely improved a bit.

I recently installed cm10.1 nightly on my international S3, it has cut the battery life down drastically and seems to drain over 10% an hour, even when not being used.
I've tried everything that i've came across by searching and still haven't had any real gain on battery life. Doing a full wipe and reinstalling doesn't help, and i've given it time for battery to calibrate; no difference. Even with wi-fi and location services off i'm getting a big drain. I've even tried switching to Slim Bean, if anything the battery was worse still.
Firstly i'm getting that Android OS is eating up a large chunk (usually above 60%) and using BetteryBatteryStats i don't see anything out of the ordinary in terms of partial and/or kernel wakelocks. I really don't wanna have to put the stock Touchwiz rom back on but that seems like the ways it's going. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there anything else i can try?

i find i get terrrible battery life on AOSP when i restore google through the setup. i skip thru the installation and open the play store to enter my gmail. then, before restoring my apps, i let it charge to 100%. honestly AOSP still doesnt have decent battery life, but it does improve if you play with it and try different things

I would respectfully disagree with you. I have run a number of ASOP based ROMs and find them better than stock in terms of battery life. Certainly better in terms of not making my eye bleed (as I hate touchwiz, but that is a personal preference). I find that SlimBean gets me the best battery life of the CM based ROMs.
To clarify, I get just over 1%/hour battery drain, when idle (as measured by BBS) with GPS and google sync enabled, mostly on LTE. My phone happily spends almost all the time I am not actively using it in deep sleep.
The recipe to achieve this is to disable google location reporting and history, avoid tons of widgets that constantly update themselves, disable samsung services that you do not use, and monitor battery usage to look out for rogue apps that do stupid thengs, like hold wakelocks when they should be idle. Dropping the minimum frequency to 192 MHz, and going to ASSWAX (CPU scheduler) and ROW (I/O scheduler) also helps.
To get decent performance you do need to install things properly. Which means ensuring that you don't have conflicting settings or random leftovers. I tend to dirty flash updates but you reallly do get better and more consistent performance going through the pain of a complete clean install (format system, clear cache, reload apps from the store) when you are switching ROMs. Only use TiBu to restore app data. Once you do this, in my experience rogue wakelocks are the biggest cause of lousy bettery perfromance, and you can track down and eliminate these. I have around 150 apps loaded and do not run any task manager/autokiller. My phone typically runs without any reboots or power cycles between ROM updates which equates to rebooting every couple of weeks to a month. I have seen over 2 months of uptime.
Certainly should be able to go 16-20 hours between charges which I would consider real world all day functionality. I guess my point is that rock solid stability and all day battery life is possible if you are systematic about how you do things.

I follow the forums here for years but have not posted yet, hence not allowed to post on the dev forum in the appropriate thread, had to open a new one
A couple of days ago I installed "[ROM][JB][4.3.1][JLS36I] CyanogenMod 10.2 Alpha (Build 3)" on my wife's phone. Until then she was still using the stock GingerBread ROM. The phone got so slow to the point of not being usable at all.
After I flashed to CM 10.2 it feels like a new phone. Lightning fast, good looks, everything works - fantastic, very much appreciated and thank you very much @ Devs!!! :good::good::good:
One big problem though:
When running the stock ROM the battery usually lasted about 2 days. Now, with CM10.2 it is empty after half a day. Since I did a full wipe before she is using less Apps as compared to before and there is no single big consumer. Just the typical mail apps, facebook etc.
When I look at the wakelocks there is one app consuming most CPU which is CSipSimple. But that app was also running before the upgrade when the battery lasted 2 days.
The screen seems to consume more power though, is that possible? Anyone else with similar experiences?

try to flash madridi kernel .. and install greenify app from playstore to greeinfy apps which run in background

ok thanks let me do some reading.
Also yesterday I deactivated the SIP app and that helped of course. Still strange that the app consumed to much less power on Gingerbread compared to CM10.2

You can try out battery calibration app before new kernel. Cause there is no "wipe battery stats" on cwm 6.0.4.4. I had same problem, and its a bit effected on cm 10.2. It's free. Maybe it will solve your problem.

That sounds very good, let me try that!

I have the same issue with increased battery drain. Yet I've not been able to identify the source. I disabled a lot of services (with Disable Service), also deactivated unnecessary system apps.
Cell standby is also shown as a huge drainer, although I usually have a good signal and no losses (checked with Better Battery Stats). There are no wake locks out of the ordinary.
Now I'll try battery calibration to see if that helps at least some amount.

Actually for me nothing really helped.
I eventually identified the 3 apps that drained the battery via Wakelock detector.
Those apps are Facebook, GMX Mail (based on K9 mailer) and CSipCimple.
Before the update to 4.3 my wifes phone was running the stock gingerbread and did not have an issue at all with those apps.
Yet on CM4.3 they are draining the battery.
Once I uninstalled the apps the batter life is back to normal. Which is sad, because she needs those apps. But no other solution so far from my side....

maybe if ur wife want to use fb checjlk her email... myb use broeser is okay... u can download opera mini or uc browser... it very fast and smooth browser.... or u can flash other rom like oneofakind.... growl (battety) version),,,,, hope this will help you!

Again the myth with whiping battery stats / battery calibration. Make a full charge and unplug the charger. This will whipe your battery stats.
And for the ones who never get this. The stats are just some data about apps consumption collected while the battery gets discharged. The ROMs are whiping them by itself on each full charge and after shuting down the phone.
This data has no Infulence to how long a battery lasts. It´s just collected to show you visually the statistics.

At least I thought it helps with the effect that the first 50% of the battery last 3 times as long as the last 50%, but not even that changed

I had the same problem with my S4 running CM 10.2 stable. The battery was empty after 8 hours. What I did was to change the theme, and today i got 12 hours and only 20% of the battery gone and wi-fi/3g all the time. Well, I still have only one hour of screen up time, but that is how it was before... I don't know, i'm just saying! Maybe it helps. The theme i added is LunarUi 2.

[Q] Can't fix battery drain...

Hey guys,
my Endeavoru PVT (Tegra3 International) is now about one and a half year old, I can't remember how it was in the beginning, but now my battery drain is too heavy in my opinion.
At first I had AHRD, then I switched between some ROMs but now I am stuck at CyanogenMod 10.1.3 because as time went by, I started to hate Sense and I love the standard Android look. The thing is, since I switched from OrDroid to CM 10.2 or better said from Android 4.1 to 4.2+, the drain got heavy.
I removed all wakelocks, I use XM-Kernel with Smartmax+Row and limited the CPU freq, I turned off sync, gps and I only use 3G if I need the speed.
I mostly use whatsapp and rarely browse the internet with my phone, when I wake up at 7:00 AM I disconnect it from the charging cable, then I go to work etc. and at about 9:00 PM the battery only has 20-30% left and the average screen on time is maximum 2 hours overall and that's clearly not ok...
As I already said, I removed all wakelocks, the only wakelocks come from the kernel when the screen is active. So please do not link the ultimate battery life thread or something like that... I have no wakelocks and my settings are ok.
And when I start gaming, the battery drains 1% per minute which is insane! So I can't play any games at all.
With OrDroid and XM-Kernel I had the best battery life and almost no bugs.
Today I wanted to install Skydragon 2.0, but it was pretty buggy. So I switched to AHRD but with the XM-Kernel (17 beta for Sense5) my computer didn't detect the One X, I switched back to Stock Kernel, then it got recognized but the files were all displayed like a mess and I couln't copy any files onto the One X. Then I was pissed and restored my CM 10.1.3 backup... Is there any way to fix this??? Please no mass storage mods, these are not stable and don't work sometimes..
A few days ago I bought a One X+ battery, it should arrive next week. Maybe the battery is broken, but that doesn't explain why it drains so fkng much battery when I start to play games! And it doesn't fix my problems with Skydragon or AHRD. I would love to stay at CM, but there are the common issues which force me to switch to a sense rom.
I will probably switch back to OrDroid with XM-Kernel when the new battery arrives, hopefully it will fix the heavy drain. Can someone explain what could cause this massive drain? I mean, a phone should last at least 24 hours not 14...
Or is there any fully working AOSP rom with Android 4.1 for the One X? So I could benefit from the battery life and the look of Android 4.1.

Did you try erasing your sd card? Corrupt files might cause heavy media drain on aosp without showing wakelocks. I would recommend trying a sense 5 Rom, get a custom kernel and set it to smartmax and row like you are used to. If that doesn't work, replacing the battery is your last call. Good luck!

Go for a full wipe of your device & SD card first than try installing anew sense 5 rom and see whether the issue still persists?

My sdcard is almost empty and the problem doesn't only happen on aosp but on all Android 4.2 or higher roms.
Did you even read my post? I already said, I tried Skydragon and ARHD and I had bugs... and yes, I made a full wipe 3 times.

Stop being rude to someone trying to help you. Yes I did read your post obviously. You didn't state if you wiped your sd card. So what do you expect from the community if you figured it out all by yourself? If it's not the software it's the hardware, replace the battery.

I didn't meant the part with the sd card, I meant the sentence were you said I should try a sense rom, which I already tried as I stated.
I'm sorry if you interpreted my post as an insult.
Edit: Ok I fixed the USB problem, I installed the newest HBoot and used lyapotas Kernel, now it works without problems. Now I'm going to fix all wakelocks and wait for my new battery.
I removed all wakelocks now and I got about one hour more since then, but at some times the drain is heavyer, I tried to backtrace the drain with GSAM and BBS (root) but there are no Problems with wakelocks. The battery drained from one minute to the other from 72 to 78, I don't know if the stats didn't refresh correctly, but I am now pretty sure it's the battery.

Okay, my battery arrived. I replaced it and besides I fixed my Wi-Fi with a piece of aluminium foil. The drain on the first start was heavy, but I think it has to undergo some full charges to calibrate.
But I have one more problem.. I'm on ARHD 33.1 with lyapotas LM kernel (XM beta didn't work very well), but I can't undervolt with SetCPU (paid for root version). Every time I want to save the undervolt settings SetCPU itself crashes and I don't really want to use TricksterMod for undervolting.
Is it because of lyapotas kernel?
I already reinstalled SetCPU two times..
Update: Wow, I never had 78% battery left after work! I guess it was my battery that was broken, so the thread can be closed.

Okay so, I flashed the latest Resurrection Remix yesterday, great performance ; however, there's a weird battery drain occurring to me. I've already tried multiple guides using greenify, amplify, etc but none really worked. I was using Viperrom 5.10 and wanted to revert back to complete stock after noticing random restarts and this battery drain. I installed stock through twrp with the backup I had before flashing and rooting then installed the stock recovery but still there was a battery drain. I flashed Leedroid, PureFusion 7.1.2 and still same problem. I think this is caused by something in Nougat since all the ROMs I flashed were nougat and showed the same issue. Now, I've seen many people experience the same problem but no one found a proper solution. Any insight as to whatever causes this battery drain would be appreciated. I'm not a heavy user at all; I don't have any games and all my apps are basically just social media like Telegram, Whatsapp, Youtube, Instagram and get barely 2.5hrs of SoT. Something to note too, my phone reports illogical battery percentages and sometimes shuts down when less than 50~40% due to an empty battery. For example, I restarted my phone a few minutes ago and upon booting it was 98% from full charge then I rebooted again and it's 78%.I'm not sure if this is a faulty battery or something wrong with the calibration. I tried calibrating multiple times but still nothing. I never abused my battery and most times I charged my phone before it hit 10-20%. Also one more question, I've noticed that on PureFusion the charging amperage was around 2-2.8 amps but on RR it reports 1.7 amps so is quick charge enabled on this ROM and if not what are the kernels I can flash to get QC? I've tried flashing Elemental X but it gets me stuck on the HTC splash screen.
I admit I'm kind of a noob when it comes to reporting bugs or issues, and I'm sorry for the length.
I'll add better screenshots of my stats after I collect more data.

I, and a lot of others, have suffered from the same symptoms. I thought I was alone but there is a big thread here https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/random-shut-boot-loops-t3690547. I have got a support ticket (which is probably soon to expire, whoops!) but I've currently got it stuck in a bootloop at HTC (white) screen. Is this what yours did? Can you help me out?

No, my phone simply stays on the black screen with HTC logo in the center and the red text under it. Idk why it does that after flashing the kernel, probably not compatible idk,but what works with me is flashing the ROM again without messing with anything else.

Fixed mine, thanks. Just reflashed a stock rom I found on here. Wish I could help you more, but I think you might have to just return it unfortunately mate

I bought mine from another country and no international warranty so :/
I'd appreciate it if anyone replied to this thread. My phone is really unusable and disabling everything makes it useless and doesn't even save that much battery. My last resort would be to replace the battery but we all know how that would turn out and how it happens .
I tried :
1.Factory resets.
2.Flashed Viperrom,Leedroid,Purefusion 7.1.2,Resurrection Remix.
3.Flashed kernels like Cleanslate,Helix
4.Used battery saving apps like Greenify, Amplify, ForceDoze.
5.Disabled location, wifi, sync, cleared cache , reset app prefences, etc...
6.Started phone in safe mode.
Took all these steps and literally no significant improvement. I can't pinpoint an exact reason as to why I'm getting this drain but I noticed a lot of usage in GSam made by Android OS and in BBS and Wakelock detector PowerManagerService.Wakelocks seems to be on top of usage, and *launch* and *alarm* also have a very high number of wakelocks +1000 or even +10000. I've read on another thread that it might be wifi issue staying awake all the time. If someone has a good app to recommend me to monitor exactly and record whats draining I'll be eternally grateful .

Just a quick update.
I collected some stats. Not much but i saw some errors in there maybe some make some sense of them?
Mainly errors that are about Batterystats service: No controller energy info supplied and Power HAL : Failed to acquire lock whenever i touch the screen
I'll collect more logs and screenshots overnight in a +6hr period.

After deleting the facebook app ( which i had some issue with it, some time the like button freeze and work only if i comment in the post ) i had this stats for my battery for the past 2 days

Hmm. That's weird because I had multiple ROMs installed and tested without any 3rd party apps like facebook and still get awful battery life. I'm back to stock now and will try deleting the fb app. Your stats are pretty good compared to mine.

You are welcome , i hope it work for you too , because i have noticed that Facebook application have too much irregular activities while the screen is off and when it is on there is a lot CPU usage, so it must be there something wrong

I found no solution except a battery replacement i can say it was definitely the battery. However, the drain is somewhat higher than it should be on Oreo.

Glad I sold my HTC 10 and bought XA2. Way, way better
