4.3 OTA Warning- Know before you go - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

As you have no doubt noticed the 4.3 OTA has been started. One thing that the Galaxy s3 community has found is that when the update is applied through official means the bootloader gets updated as well.
When the new official bootloader is installed it prevents any downgrade to 4.1 and 4.2 based roms.
I've already learned that at least one person has been able to discover through trial and disappointment that this holds true for our devices well. Please consider carefully before you apply the official OTA as, at this point , it seems there is no going back to 4.1 based roms.
Me personally I am planning to wait for a de-Knoxed flashable ROM and modem before transitioning to 4.3.
Hopefully soon there will be work arounds developed so that we may be able to use the full software release and bootloader combination safely with all available roms, until then I'd think carefully before updating your software via official means.

So I'll the question that hasn't been asked yet. Does this apply to Kies as well?

It should happen on ota, odin and kies. An official update method with the official update files will install the bootloader if the pattern holds true to the gs3 crowd. I would be cautious until the dev crowd got their hands on it.

I backed up my rom with cwm and then updated through kies. after everything settled I used Odin to flash cwm. I wasn't able to successfully root and missed my setup so I restored my backup with cwm. I'm running stock deodexed md1. so far everything seems back to normal.

Interesting. I hope your case is the rule vs the norm. There was a guy on the update thread who couldn't get back.

I definitely couldn't go back to stock 4.1.2 after 4.3. Doing a factory reset just made it hang on the tmobile logo. Flashing 4.1.2 through ODIN made it hang as well.

maybe I got lucky. I probably should've took a screenshot but I wasn't aware of people not being able to go back. I went back to 4.3 with a fresh install this time.
edit: now that I was able to root, I might back up my 4.3 and see if I can restore back to 4.1.2, if I have time. Going to try and deodex now to start applying mods.

Everyone should wait for a custom version made by one of our devs if you truly care about having your bootloader unlocked. If you install Roms just avoid until our devs get their hands on it and release something.

It's kind of subtle and heavy handed at the same time. I'm just glad I follow the GS3 forum for my wife's phone. Otherwise I'd be stuck like a lot of people here. I love Tweaked and TrevE Mod tethering.
I was able to use a method from the GS3 forum to get wifi tethering running on the wife's phone (running 4.3 TW). I might flash mattlowry's deKnoxed stock rom for a bit and try to get tethering working tomorrow. I'll see if I can either use the methods and files from the GS3 forum linked below or tinker with the zip file from that threads op and see if there is anything simple to change and get it working.

I also updated my Note 2 with the OTA MK7 as soon as it was available, however I always kept a NANDROID backup of my favorite Custom Rom on my SD CARD (NoteS4_V6). As soon as the MK7 update settled in and I set it up the way I liked thats when I went ahead and Rooted it and added TWRP again, then I realized a couple of things, 1) being my incoming text was Buggy, I wouldn't receive them for a while after they were sent (NO BUENO), 2) being I wasn't able to use my Wifi tethering Hack any more, and thats the MAIN thing I need on my Note 2..!!!! So thats when I remembered I had my backup still stored on my SD CARD, I told my self that it wouldn't hurt to try, and i did. It booted back without a hitch, SUPER HAPPY AGAIN, my itch is back.. Not saying that the MK7 wasn't good, However my Custom Rom and Custom Kernel is clocking a whopping 23152 on AntuTu Benchmark. felling like Mc Donalds "Im Loving It"..!!!!! lololol. Good Luck everyone....

Hey C, if you happen to get the Trev wifi tethering to actually work (or even any tethering Hack) on the MK7 please let me know, cause I tried serval different versions to no avail, this is why i reverted back to my previous Rom I had Backed up and was fortunate to flash back to. Thanks in ADVANCE Buddy...

Good advice, I am gonna wait too. However, the new UCMK7 modem rocks. Improved my reception and battery significantly. Totally solved my need to flash something new. I'll stick with 4.12 for now.

Did you just flash it in recovery?
I am on stock deodexed with TWRP.
It won't brick my note, will it?

This is most likely the update from a couple weeks ago getting rolled out. It was a kernel fix for the Exynos Abuse exploit. If you use ota rootkeeper you can easily restore root at the ota.

Will ota rootkeeper always be able to restore root even after significant updates like say 5.0?
I was able to keep root after the last ota update but I've heard it may be lost after more significant updates..? - Thnx

Why hasn't there been a 4.4 Google Edition rom in t-mobile s4 dev section?
Is there a problem with the kernel ?

There's really no point. A T-Mobile version of the rom wouldn't give you anything different than flashing the i9505 version(it comes naturally from Google without carrier branding) and making it for the i9505 will let the rom reach a wider audience. The only thing you might have to do after flashing is change the apn setting for lte.
Owner of Tmobile M919 model want to install 4.4 kitkat
Hello Guys
First thanks in advance to anyone that may be able to provide me some info / input on my questions.
1. I would like to get out of the samsung branded install of the tmobile S4 and try a rom that would give me stock OS like the Google edition / Nexus phones.
2. Is it it possible to get 4.4 kitkat stock/custom rom installed on this phone ? any recommendations / issues ? i know that wifi calling is lost with stock roms but what about tethering ?
My phone is already rooted and TW recovery installed.

1.) Just go over to the Development section and browse the different 4.4 based Roms. They're almost updated every other day. I've tried a few of them and each has their strengths/weaknesses. Just always make sure that you Backup your current software so that if there is an issue, you can return to a previously working software.
2.) If you haven't upgraded to the MK2 radio yet, I would advise reading all that you can about it and performing that (provided you're still on MDL Bootloader). Tethering was still available with all of the 4.4 Roms that I tried. Ultimately, it comes down to what you prefer. I went back to a stock-ish 4.3 Rom because of certain features that a GE Rom just didn't have.
Best of luck!

The radio is more like a driver for all you cellular hardware. KitKat does not like the old firmware. That being said if you don't upgrade you may or may not have issues. Updating firmware would be best before installing your ge ROM. I would test it out now on you current ROM and then switch over to KitKat. Have you rooted or updated to new 4.3? If I were you I would follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544612 it worked for me. This will upgrade radio without giving you Knox. Honestly they are all similar. The come from the same base. I do like the faux kernel of dandroid. Can droid has been the smoothest. Jamal's was good and is fully stock virtually untouched. His development was slower than other so I jumped ship. If you like his work stick with it. I use dandroid for the built in xposed framework. I can mod the hardware buttons and status bar easily and a little less bloat. Infamous has more bells and whistles. Hope that helps. Oh and FYI I have dirty flashed between all of these ROMs no problem. I also clean flashed them as well to really compare. Worst case scenario you just nandroid backup the one you like and flash em all they are smaller size to back up. Let me know how it works out

Keeping root after 4.3 update
Jspex said:
General noob question:
How would I go about rooting 4.3 for AT&T? Can someone point me to the thread of it exists? Yes I've tried the search function and no nothing exact came up. I don't want to mess up and then be "that guy" on here crying about making a noob mistake.

I rooted using this method while still on 4.1.2 and it worked flawlessly.
I then paid for and installed SuperSU Pro and activated "Survival Mode"
Lastly, after the OTA update was COMPLETELY finished, I followed this simple procedure to get root back again.
SuperSU disables Knox for you on 4.3 which is also nice. I should have qualified here that I am COMPLETELY stock other than root. I have not "frozen" any apps., deleted any Samsung provided files, etc. and I have stock bootloader and stock recovery. This will likely NOT work if you have done any of those things.
Is there a flashable version of this? If not, can somebody make one? Thanks.
I'm running a custom rom and rollouts/updates from vendors freak me out because I don't trust not one of them. Knowing AT&T they have thrown in some bit of encryption that locks the bootloader. I understand this might not be the case this time but I do know none of them can be trusted.
Now if you excuse me, I'm 1/2 done with 1984 the book and my tin foil hat is making me itch.
Guys I need help I am stuck, I am using unlock att with tmobile, I check software update but it days interrupted, and I even tried with kies but it's not connecting at all, I tried 2 pcs.... Any help... What to do to update it... Please

The update has only been out for a few hours and we are asking for .zip files already ??
Sheesh...
Give the devs some time to pull it apart and clean it up...unless you would like Knox and a bootloader lock ??

I have a few questions for you and/or those more in the know:
If I were to do this same thing, would I be able to flash a custom recovery (like TWRP) and/or flash custom ROM's/Kernels like I can already do now? One of my main concerns is that the stock kernel doesn't support Boeffla Sound, and that really makes for better audio on this device...might as well take full advantage of that Wolfson DAC...
I have to admit, it would be nice to be able to use pure AT&T stock, but rooted, as a base...this is why I loved the old CleanROM AT&T SE so much...
TIA for any guidance you can give on this.
Side note: after ODIN'ing back to 4.1.2 MA4, it says I have a 741MB update I can take....I'm sure that's this 4.3 update...Culpeper, VA here.

I did the same as marchusdavis but it resulted in a total disaster. After I downloaded the OTA update from AT&T I restarted my phone and it installed through CWM-Touch. At the end it asked if I wanted to ensure root was maintained and of course I said "yes" there (as well as through my SuperSU Pro Survival Mode). When it booted, my WiFi no longer works AND I lost root.
If anyway has any advice on how to get to a stock 4.3 from here please let me know!
Ugh, having trouble updating atm.
Goes up to 30%, then my phone reboots and says
"The update was interrupted" or something like that
On stock 4.1.2 rooted with stock recovery if anyone can help.

I don't believe so, as I am completely stock, bootloader and all. If you want to install other ROMs, you'd need to use a different method I believe. Likely downloading this update either via Kies or something else, and use ODIN to do everything. If you search around a bit on XDA, you'll probably find someone who has done it successfully and posted how. While I like custom ROMs, I have not had a need to use one yet on this device. However, if Samsung doesn't eventually give us Air Command, that might be enough to make me try it!
Is it possible to get the official update from the leak or do I have to downgrade to 4.1.2? I tried updating from the leak but it said it's the latest version.

[Q] cannot root galaxy s3 i747 4.3

Sir I updated my galaxy s3 i747 with leaked firmware 4.3 with no knox.
It has unrooted my phone.
When I try to root my phone again.
I cannot root it.
And im having a battery problem.
It drains very fast.
Which ROM did you flash? You have the s3 from AT&T?

I've never seen an official AT&T stock 4.3 ROM. I know AT&T released 4.3 as an OTA update but don't think they released a full ROM.

Aren't those are re-packaged ROMs rather than being a complete 4.3 ROM similar to Rogers/Bell/Telus ROMs? To install, you have to Odin back to a stock rom or TW-based ROM.

am sure there is an official firmware from at&t and its hidden in this threads or somewhere on the net plus i was on a 4.1.2 stock, i dont like leaks just the official cleaned out so i did not have any problems with bootloaders/updating etc....... did not bother to use odin just flashed with CMW and everything worked
edit: devs need the official firmware from AT&T to work on , without it they have nothing (assuming you already know that)

AT&T did not release an official Odin tar for 4.1.2 or 4.3 it would be great if they did but they haven't and don't have any plans to do so.
Even without the tar files I think our developers have done a great job.

Agreed. The devs worked directly from the OTA. They never had the official firmware, as they all will tell you. You're not going to find it here or anywhere on the net.

I understand the devs had to re-create the ROM. My point was that these aren't stock, but they are certainly good to have around

So since you allege AT&T released official firmware for 4.1.2(some other way than OTA) obviously my search skills aren't what they should be. Can you provide a link to backup your allegations?
Whether or not we get updates has little to do with Samsung and more to do with the service provider, and it is the service provider whom determines if we get an official copy released.
My thought is that AT&T is attempting to discourage us from customizing our devices. Some people have no business customizing anything and that can cause them to attempt to return their device under warranty. When the owner was the cause of the device failure that costs the provider money...

Btw I want to apologize to the OP here is a link to some roms that are pre rooted they're very close to stock with only minor differences mostly in its capabilities and some are debloated. These will get you rooted for sure, remove knox and should do what you want. I like the one from loserskater. This link below works only on the AT&T SGH-I747.

There are two bootloaders that you can choose. One is MJ5 which is knox free and will not trigger knox nor void your warranty (but phone cannot be charged when turned off) v/s ND3 the latest Kitkat bootloader which will trigger knox void your warranty (phone can be charged when turned off). You need to flash either of the bootloaders to get wifi working.Another alternative to get wifi working on custom rom which i learned few weeks ago ,flash DN3 rom , then flash latest agni or nadia kernel for kitkat and you'll have wifi working.Custom kernels have some sort of wifi drivers which enables wifi to work properly.

Actually all the current 4.4.2 custom roms are stable,it all comes down to what features you're looking for in them.Whether you want S5 look and features or want to stick to stock N2 rom look with some stuff tweaked. So it's hard to tell you "awesome stable" ROM.Try a few yourself like a week each and then see which suits you the best.
Regarding which bootloader like i said the pros and cons of the two bootloaders I myself upgraded to ND3 after being on MJ5 cause i don't care about warranty and sooner than later we all would have to upgrade to ND3 and i am not going to downgrade back to 4.1.2 (if you flash mj5 you can go back to 4.1.2 rom).So just take your pick, both bootloaders are fine.

MK3 is newer than MJ5 and it is most likely a knoxed bootloader so you cannot go back to 4.1.2 you can only flash 4.3 and 4.4 ROM.Only reason to ugprade to ND3 is if you want to charge your phone by turning it off which is not possible on any 4.3 bootloaders. We might not see anymore updates from samsung when it comes to major android release from google cause google announced earlier this year that they will stop supporting phones after giving them upgrades to two android versions so our phone originally came with 4.1.1(mine came with 4.1.2 since i purchased it much later) then 4.3 and now 4.4.2 so the most we might get is 4.4.3 but that's only a bug fix update if any.So in my suggestion stick to MK3 bootloader and see how your phone performs especially wifi/bluetooth and if it's stable when you flash 4.4.2 ROM

You can stay on it as long as you don't feel the need to charge your phone by turning it off or in worse situations your battery is 0% when you plug in your charger the phone will boot up and not go pass the splash screen cause the phone doesn't get charged during that period so you'd have to boot into recovery and charge your phone for sometime before turning it on and booting into the ROM but if you never let your phone battery die on you or dont care to turn off the phone to charge your phone stick to MK3 dont bother upgrading.
