How to install custom recovery on 4.1.2 build MD5??? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi all,
I would like to flash my device with 4.3 doedexd and i need the safest way to install custom recovery cwm/twrp....please guys i searched enough with no luck and most of the threads doesnt mention the build supported number...sorry guys but i softbricked two devices before...this is why i have to ask....

Are you rooted? You can always just Odin twrp recovery or flash it thru their native app, Goo manager from the market. Look up their thread and it should give you specific instructions on how to do so.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery Help!

Hi i am trying to install CWM Recovery for my galaxy w but can someone tell me the difference between installing CWM like this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446593) and installing it by downloading ROM Manager from the market (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en) and use the option Flash CWM Recovery as seen in the first app screenshot.
Head to Dev section there is a thread on ClockworkMod Recovery esp. made by arco68...use the Odin method.
Flashing via ROM Manager is not advisable yet....

Better not use the ROM Manager App method, unless somebody confirmed it is working.
I bricked my Galaxy Ace a year ago using that method when I didn't know better.
When you try to do it via the CWM application you get a list of supported devices.
You will not find the wonder in there, trying to use other device will probably end you up with a brick.
I have tried the recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-ancora.zip by using adb shell method. It works without any problem.

[Q] CWM/TWRP: ROM Preference when flashing?

So, I have looked on the forums for this and have come up empty handed and am unsure if you have to install one recovery over another to install specific ROMs. I have noticed that one catagory is touch wiz and the other is akop or cm10 and I was wondering if you had to install the twrp recovery when flashing the touch wiz or vice versa for cmw. I know specific ROMs that say you should for flash updates and that you can flash the update using cwm over twrp but some do not specify that you have to have that recovery in order to flash a new ROM. Im asking so I dont make a stupid mistake when flashing ROMs just because I want a new one like I have done with the last one I have had. Sorry if this is a noob question. I hope this post will help clarify any differances since I havent found one in search other then what recovery is better then the other.
You can flash from whatever recover you want. Even the ones that say things like "CWM IS NOT SUPPORTED" still work just fine.

Both custom recoveries work fine. My personal preference is TWRP. The touch interface is great and you save wear and tear on the volume and power buttons by not having to use them. Also very easy to rename your Nandroid backup. You can install 1 over the other with no problem. You don't have to worry about the latest zip file if you use Rom Manager to install the latest version of CWM and use Goo Manager to install latest version of TWRP. Be aware that TWRP cannot read your CWM Nandroid backups, so you would need to install CWM again to restore from them.
I don't know if TWRP has been fixed yet using goo. You might want to read this before preceding.

Rooted using Oding and Root66, how do I flash custom recovery?

Ok, so I finally got root with ODIN and the Root66 file. Now I want to flash a custom ROM. First I have to flash a custom recovery right guys? How do I do that. Last time I had rooted, I had TWRP which I liked. Where do I get TWRP and how do I flash it if it applies to android 4.1.2?
Download goo manager from the play store, open it and press menu and select install OpenRecoveryScript. Just follow along with the pop ups and you'll have TWRP in no time.
Then you'll be able to flash roms...stay in the t999 section and you really shouldn't run into any problems. Oh and look into backing up your imei before you start to flash roms.

Do you really want TWRP or would you be okay with CWM? I know you can just download ROM manager and flash CWM. If not, you can use [ROOT]Recovery Tools - Flasher from the Play Store.
It can flash TWRP or CWM. I use it for flashing CWM Touch on my Nexus 7. It works great.

Annoying, but not that hard to fix. You have two or three choices. If you made a backup, you can restore that from recovery mode.
You could go to download mode and flash a stock ROM onto the phone, then root it again.
Or you can go with a custom ROM as the poster above suggested. You generally need a custom recovery for that, so you'd go to download mode and install a custom recovery first. Followed by the custom ROM. If the custom ROM is a tar file, you'd also flash that with Odin in download mode. If it is a flashable zip file then the custom ROM would be flashed after you boot to the custom recovery mode first.
If flashing a stock image, ensure that it is a version 4.3 AT&T image. Trying to flash an earlier version will do bad things to your phone.

As far as I know, there is no stock 4.3 AT&T image available because one was never released by AT&T. However, I think there may be some 4.3 based ROMs that can be flashed.
Mobile Odin can also be used to flash an image since mobile Odin does not flash a bootloader or modem.

It can be painful to be an AT&T customer at times. If a full factory 4.3 ROM wasn't released, the OP could still flash a properly formatted backup of someone's stock AT&T 4.3. But it would of course be easier to adopt a custom ROM as you suggested. One choice would be S3Rx 3.0.
.
Thanks for the help. However I tried to flash several 4.3 stock based roms and got nothing. I had an older s3 with a busted screen so I took the mother board out and put in this. I then flashed twrp and rooted. Im on the ota 4.3 and would really like a custom rom. Im currently on the hunt.

You didn't give us nearly enough details to really know what you tried, let alone why it might have failed. AT&T is much more restrictive than most carriers and is locking their bootloader, so you have to be careful not to flash someone else's bootloader or a pre 4.3 version.
But since you have a rooted phone again.. installing a custom ROM wouldn't be hard to do.. I gave you a link to decent custom ROM that would work for you. Or you can browse other custom ROMs if you prefer. There are detailed instructions in the thread to guide you. Basically confirm that you have one of the listed AT&T bootloaders and modems, download the custom ROM to your phone, boot to twrp, do a "factory wipe", then install the custom ROM (flashable zip file) from the twrp install menu.
.
Try Philz Touch recovery instead of TWRP. If it doesn't work with Philz, let us know the error messages you're getting.

You can't find custom rooms cause you're blind or can't read. Backup out of the Q&A forum to the s3 page with all the forum listing then click on the forum that says AT&T galaxy s3 development. If you can't find one there you need to stop trying...

I am Running a 4.1 What do I need to do to update to 4.4

OK, so I have been rooted almost a year, and have flashed several roms. I am currently on 4.1 of I believe Hybrid's rom. I believe I have had a 4.3 at one time but my last flash, whenever I started trying to flash a 4.4 version I started running into problems along the way. Is there anything special I need to do to upgrade to 4.4? Like besides flashing the rom, is there anything else I need to flash? Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks!
Brandon.

No one still has answered lol. I tried to flash a few different 4.3's and they kept failing. I'm using TWRP or whatever it's called 2.6.0.0 not sure what that's about. I had to flash an older rom I had on my computer to get it to allow my phone to work.
I prefer using CWM or Philz Touch which is based on CWM rather than TWRP. I tried TWRP with a few ROMs but they always failed to install. Once I switched to CWM, they installed without issue. You can flash the tar version of Philz using Odin.
http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att
To run 4.4.2 ROMs, you should update to the latest 4.1.2 bootloader, load a custom recovery, boot into recovery, wipe cache, Dalvik, data, system, and flash the new ROM.

I already updated my bootloader to the one that said "you cannot downgrade from this one or you will brick your device" I think that's the latest one I'm not sure lol.
By "Boot into recovery" are you meaning boot to the recovery screen? Sorry, I like to make sure of what I am doing so I don't brick anything lol. Although in a month I'm buying the Note 3 .
How do I go about switching back to CWM? Sorry to ask and sound dumb -- which I am not I have an associates of science in computer programming but just reciently switched to Mechatronic Engineering due to higher job growth in my area. I digress.
I could probably find dozens of articles on here how to go about it, but its generally quicker if someone just posts the link to the correct one to use for my device, every time I go searching these forms, I end up on every-which phone other than mine -- I do apologize.
You need the newest version of cwm to flash anything 4.4.
If you're rooted use goomanager from play store it will install cwm or look in the stickies there are files and instructions.

Go to the general section and read the stickies here is a quote from the recovery thread I have heavily clipped it you need to read the whole thing in its original form. From what I read it is safe for your phone to use the D2ATT recovery image, I however take no responsibility for any thing that happens successful or not if you you flash it you wear it...

So you've got your device rooted, and you want to install a custom recovery? Great! Don't just follow any guide you stumble across though, as some of the early recovery packages for the "AT&T" model were actually just copies of the custom Sprint recovery, and then you'll have all sorts of fun trying to install ROMs. ("Status 7" errors anyone? )
While this may seem difficult, it's really not. Grab a recovery image (these files end in ".img") such as ClockWork Mod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) for your device. Most ROM developers say to use CWM, but they both work equally well.
In our case, we need an image for the Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T. Telus, Rogers, Bell, and SaskTel phones are (almost*) the exact same phone as AT&T, if you have one of these devices, you will be installing the AT&T recovery.
*NOTE: While we're on the topic, let's take a second to talk about what makes the Canadian I747M different from the AT&T I747.
The short version is... The modem. AT&T is using completely different and incompatible modem firmware in their phones when compared with the Canadian models. Rogers, Bell, Telus, and any other Canadian I747M are the same device (Samsung worked some strange voodoo and got all the Canadian carriers to agree on the same hardware!) which means that if Rogers releases a new modem firmware update, a SaskTel user could install it without issue. AT&T modem updates will not work on Canadian models, nor will Canadian updates work on AT&T phones! I've tried it. Trust me. You don't want to deal with the hassle of fixing it.
