Ever since I updated to the last OTA I have lost clockworks recovery image. Thus now I am unable to install the latest froyo rom.
I have tried to install the latest clockworks recovery image and Amon_Ra recovery through Rom Manager. Each time it states it is installed but everytime I try to boot up to the recovery image it gives me the following error:
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
and it just gives me the Android System Recover <2e>
Any help would be appreciated....
It sounds like you are not rooted.
If you accepted the OTA from Sprint using your system update on your phone, you are no longer rooted and will not have a custom recovery/root permissions. You will be unable to flash any custom recovery/ROMS/delete any sprint apps/Other Root only things until someone comes up with a way to root 2.2.
Have a drink in hopes that a dev will come up with a way to Root 2.2 soon!
I didnt update over the phone
What happened is I installed a rooted verson of 1.47.651.1 but in doing that it got rid of the recovery image... it definetly a rooter version because i can run apps that require root.. such as wife tether titanium back etc...
any other suggestions...

there's an update.zip around here somewhere that will allow you to boot into an early form of clockwork recovery.
so, assuming that you goofed something, but still have nand unlocked....
find that update.zip. put it and a .zip for a real recovery onto your sdcard. boot into hboot, let it run the update.zip, that will take you to koush's early clockwork recovery. use that recovery to flash a solid recovery.
done.
alternative method would be to use fastboot to erase the recovery partition, then put a new recovery in.
Here is the update.zip...Just extract Recovery.zip....Do this OR/AND what the Senior Member above said and you should be good

I actually tried the update.zip one already and it doesnt install... it will stated that the signature cant be verified and it will about the installation... havent tried the fastboot approach... I guess I will need to find out how to do that now
so from the looks of it I am screwed... I have hboot .79 if that matters and from the looks of it the rooted rom i installed screwed up my nand unlock.. which is why i think i can install any recovery images... i tried alot of the nand unlock tutorials and most of them I eventually get to a point were i need to write to /data and i cant because permissions are denied... great... oh well i'll keep on trying... any suggestions are appreciated...
If you still have super user, try this...same thing happend to me.

I'm having a very similar problem also. My Hboot is 0.79.000 too & after trying clockworkmod recovery, a few RUU update attempts, and attempting to change ROMs completely (not in that order) I'm at a loss, no success anywhere. I can't even get in to recovery anymore. It just reverts back to Bootloader menu where my options are Reboot, Reboot Bootloader, or Power down (& I think there is one other option that i tried and sent me back to the aforementioned screen). However, I can still load my pre-existing ROM...
Does anyone have any ideas if there is anything I can do?
TIA

you can erase recovery from rom manager and try to reflash. i would recommend reinstalling rom manager just to make sure it installed correctly. it installed bad on me once and corrupted my recovery trying to update it, reinstalled and installed an old recovery then the newest one and it worked.
Thanks for the suggestions all. I followed the instructions from link you posted using terminal emulator. No such luck, still reading HBOOT 0.79.0000 and running same ROM.
I also tried reinstalling (several times) clockworkmod recovery images and it effects nothing.
Should I try to completely unroot my phone again? If the images i just flashed didn't do it what will?
Im totally at a loss here. ARG!
hit there jtwonbly.......are you also running the stock rooted 1.47.651.1?
Build number 1.47.651.1 CL195459 release-keys
yea same here......and what is it that your trying to do...go back to stock ROM?
I'd like to go to any other ROM. Its as if I'm no longer rooted anymore.
I think I may try to start all over again using NeckFaces old tutorial on unlocking NAND w/o adb. I'm just not sure if that will fix the HBOOT file because I can't get in to Recovery.
OK Guys thanks for all your help but I have been able to get it fixed now!!!
I pretty much had to redo all of Toast Root tutorial and NAND unlock to get it working. Both Part 1 and Part 2 even though I was already running a rooted rom.
The original problem I had is I kept getting told to just try the nand unlock in part 2 but the phone wasnt having it. It wouldnt like the engineering build of the pc36img.zip
So I started from Part 1. Downloaded the rooted rom pc36img.zip and what do you know it finally let me install it. By the time I was done with both parts 1 and 2 I was able to flash a recovery image, get back to hboot .76 and I am now another proud owner of an Evo running a rooted Froyo!!!!
Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out here because I've screwed up somehow and would like to un-do whatever it is I've done. I'm trying to think straight so I hope what I type out ends up making sense .
1. Right now, my phone works. I'm stuck on a rooted pre-OTA stock rom. I unrooted once, but was not able to flash the OTA update via the stock recovery. I still have a use-able phone so I'm doing better than some people in threads I've read about.
2. I tried to root it with gfree. I don't think it worked, and some errors came up during the process. I used the first method then skipped to 0.2 per the wiki. Using g-free verify tells me everything is alright. supercid, sim lock, etc.
3. I am s-off, but earlier I couldn't get gfree verify to work (my own error I'm certain) and assumed I screwed up. Rom manager and root explorer never gave me prompts for superuser permissions, but I was s-off. I didn't think I rooted correctly and used the rage against the cage method.
4. Right now, I'm apparently s-off and rooted. I can't flash any roms though. I use rom manager to flash the latest recovery, it says it works and then when I reboot to recovery it stays stuck on the HTC splash screen. Battery pull takes me back to the pre-OTA rom. Recovery only recently stopped working though.
Ultimately, I need to get recovery back somehow, and then I'd return my phone back to an unrooted state with the stock 2.2 rom since I can't seem to handle rooting to well. Since I have no clockwork mod recovery, not really sure what to do to get this process rolling. If someone can help me get recovery back, and then help me flash roms again I'd definitely appreciate it. I have noone to blame but myself here.
If it ends up mattering, I do have adb installed and can use that if need be, and like I said my phone still boots up. I don't have a brick but something crazy is going on.

Hey thank you so much for a response! I tried this with two sd cards because I didn't have any luck. I tried that exact command and flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-vision.img and each time it returns flash_image: not found
It definately is on my sd card.

Im fairly certain I had to flash it to root with the rage method, vol + pwr screen says "vision pvt eng s-off hboot 0.76.2000 (pc1010000)"
With adb it gives me the same error, but I used rom manager to flash 2.5.1.3 so I have a recovery again. I have one good nandroid of the rom im stuck on.
My next issue is that I tried to flash the stock rom with root from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042 and something isn't right. I wipe data/cache and then go to install zip from sdcard (manual recovery) and select the rom. What happens after is it tells me the normal messages it gives when flashing and "welcome to vision" but when the flash is done instead of giving me the option of "reboot system now" it goes back to the install zip for sd card menu like the flash never happened (and it will not boot past the htc screen)

Maybe it's a bad recovery. You said you flashed 2.5.1.3, so ROM Manager should work. Try flashing 3.0.2.4 through there now. If not, I suggest downloading Fastboot.

Thanks for the guide! I followed it with no issue, I rebooted into recovery; it first hung on the HTC screen, rebooted, vibrated and then booted back into the OS. So anyway, instead of 2.5.1.3, I'm on 3.0.0.5 now.
I went down to 2.5.1.3 and downloaded cm6.1 via rom manager. It told me this : E: can't open '/sdcard/..location (bad) installation aborted. tmp/recovery.log was copied to sdcard
I tried enom's froyo themed rom next, heres what recovery tells me:

E Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E Failure at line 19:

I also tried to download an updated superuser from the market, it says installation unsuccessful package file was not signed correctly.

If this is the Gingerbread OTA, you'll need everything as stock. If it's the "OTA" with Superuser thrown in, you'll need CWM Recovery 3+ (2.5* formats the system in yaffs, 3+ formats it in EXT).
This is just the ota update with wifi calling still 2.2, Im unrooted and stock recovery again

I'll run through a history:
- Rooted my phone to S-OFF and installed a custom ROM
- Installed another custom ROM after running a 'super wipe' script
- Decided I wanted to go back, tried to get to clockworkmod recovery but I couldn't get to hboot
- Tried to re-root, got halfway and it failed. I could now get to hboot but when I get to clockworkmod recovery it shows an error logo with a danger triangle sign. When I try to boot it just stays on the HTC logo.
- The first time I tried to load Clockworkmod it said it couldn't access some /cache/ directory and now it just shows the warning icon with no error message.
I think I need to reinstall Clockworkmod, then use that to reinstall a ROM. I heard it's possible to do this by flashing a zip file from the SDcard and loading hboot. How can I do this?
Thanks!

That red triangle is HTC's recovery mode. You should manage to get root via one click root and then flash clockwork normally. In the app.
Thanks. What exactly is one click root? Have googled it but not sure which it is.
I think you might mean this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
But that seems to require that I can boot into a ROM in the first place? I can't get past the HTC logo at all.

No that is S-OFF. You need S-OFF if you want to flash custom rom. This is what I meant http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thanks again. Just to clarify, on hboot it tells me it's 'S-OFF' at the top of the screen. I should run the one click utility anyway, right?
I don't think superone click works on dhd but I could be wrong. Haven't read up on it in a long time.
But back to original question on hand. I made a guide in the general section for this exact issue. It titled stuck in hboot. Their I have a link for cwr in a pd98 format(flashable through hboot).
It should work for you. I did notice that the modelid in the txt is different but was told it should work for dhd with no modification but I have not confirmed as I have an inspire. If it doesn't work let me know and ill make the change quickly and uplaod a new one. Its a simple change. If you want to can try. Simply change the model I'd to pd98100000 from pd9812000
Thank you, I will try that now.
...And it worked! Thanks all

I have a similar problem. I tried to flash a galaxy rom on to my htc evo 4g and now my phone wont boot up. I actually need instructions on how to do this. When I try to flash recovery it goes into HBOOT and also goes into bootloader. But when I try recovery it goes to the white HTC Evo 4g screen and immediately goes back to Hboot. Iv tried to download a clockworkmod custom recovery img and flash it as a PC36IMG zip. It finds the zip and says parsing PC36IMG but doesn't ask if I want to flash it and goes back into bootloader. I renamed the recovery image "Recovery" and the Zip "PC36IMG" as instructed from a different website. I can ONLY use this method because my micro port is broken.
Also when I downloaded the recovery image there were two choices. Recovery image and recovery touch image. We should I go with?

I tell you how to over come this:
1) Throw your phone into the trash can
2) Buy a new one
3) Come back to xda
4) Read all the tutorials once again
5) Read them again
6) Re-read them
7) Now do whatever you want.
This method works perfectly for any noob...

Sorry but what are you talking about an EVO 4g in the DHD forums??...BTW, in the zip file you need a .txt file to be able to be flashed. If that file is missing then the hboot will never detect the .zip file.
Besides, if you have an unlocked bootloader you won't be able to flash recovery in that way. You can do it using fastboot flash commands...
I had started a previous thread, and in attempting to fix my phone, it seems I may have bricked it.
I somehow flashed a gsm rom for my CDMA verizon HTC one m7. In attempting to revert to a stock rom I am now stuck.
I attempted to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224752 as a stock dump, it would fail at the end of the installation.
I tried flashing a stock recovery found on that link and it failed to boot, one time it had a picture of a phone with green arrows going in a circle and loading bar under it, then it went to the regular boot, when I had 4.3 PAC Rom still installed. I was using TWRP as my recovery. I then for reasons unknown to me, flashed clockworkmod recovery 6.0.4.7, which is when I must have wiped all data and tried installing the stock rom from the link above. When flashing it using clockwork it goes through till the end it says:
>>> Setting permissions
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E: Error in /data/media/0/one.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
I go to reboot and then clockwork mod says I'm not rooted...
It reboots and just keeps rebooting the flash screen.
I power and down volume to go into bootloader and select recovery again.
It goes into clockworkmod and immediately at the bottom it says:
CLockworkMod Recovery v6.0.4.7
Swipe up/down to change selections.
Swipe to the right for enter.
Swipe to the left for back.

E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log

I was trying the adb sideload to add another rom but it said device not found.
Any help would be appreciated.
also Tried reflashing TWRP a few versions older than the newest, and it shows the TWRP splash screen but then reboots and goes to the HTC screen.

I tried looking up ways to flashboot and img to get it up and running but can't figure it out.
How did u manage to flash a gsm ROM
Sent from my HTC One VZW using Tapatalk 4
I'm not sure, it stemmed from my last post, one guy said that is why I had no service and no baseband when flashing from PAC Rom (JB) to the new PAC Rom or Paranoid ANdroid (KK) versions. Basically when flashing the new PAC I would use the PAC for VZW and it would fail, but the PAC with no provider would work but I would have no service. I'm not sure that is totally why though. But through that, someone suggested I update the firmware, I followed the link in the last post, updated the firmware, re flashed the KK roms with no difference. Then they suggested to just reflash a stock rom and stock recovery, the stock recovery they linked wouldn't boot, so I tried reflashing to clockworkmod recovery and tried installing the stock rom they suggested again, and it would fail during flashing it. I wiped my backups in that process and now I'm stuck with clockworkmod recovery and fastboot. Tried reflashing TWRP 2.6.3.1 which is the latest that would work on my phone, now it shows just the TWRP flash screen and doesnt go into the recovery, so I am now again with clockworkmod.

from that post I did the firmware update, I tested flashing the newest TWRP and it finally now works. So I flashed the only rom on the SD Card, from that same post by Santod040, the odexed version, which I had previously put on the sd card after wiping everything.. and it didn't fail to instal on the new TWRP like it did on clockworkmod, it said successful, then it asked to install SuperSU because it said I wasn't rooted, I said yes and now I am stuck in a bootloop again.
Tried to reflash again, except say no to installing SuperSU, and same result, a bootloop...
May I will try using the adb sideload tomorrow and add another ROM. last time the sideload wouldn't run, but maybe it will work now with the new TWRP.
Thanks for you help guys.

Flash the RUU, not the firmware update. Then turn it on and test. After that, then update your firmware / radio. Test again. THEN flash your recovery, both CWM and TWRP work. Test, make a backup. Then try flashing a ROM.
Here is the RUU link - http://goo.gl/JEkyCk
Place the zip in your fastboot/adb directory on your computer.
Put the device in fastboot mode
(Volume down and power until menu appears, select fastboot using power button)
Connect the device to the computer
Enter the following commands from terminal/command prompt in the fastboot directory, one at a time:
fastboot oem rebootRUU (this puts the device in RUU mode)
fastboot flash zip rom.zip (rename file to rom.zip)
It will say that the update did not finish, to flush again, so repeat the above step:
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
After that, update firmware, flash recovery, backup, profit.
hey guys... I flashed this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2694193
then my device kept rebooting only on htc screen and that's it. tried different roms but didn't work. maybe Ihaven't tried the correct ones. right now I'm stuck in to bootloader only and the device is:
*** TAMPERED ***
*** RELOCKED ***
M7_WLV PVT SHIP S-ON RH
HBOOT-1.56.0000
RADIO-1.13.41.01.09_2
OS-3.11.605.1
recovery doesn't work. so far I'm trying to get something to work with fastboot, in other words, searching for RUU which will flash and make it work. if you have something in mind and can help me, please do so. THANKS!!!

from that post I did the firmware update, I tested flashing the newest TWRP and it finally now works.

You can also just download a Rom with root baked in. Bonestock is great, Santod040 or hawknests sense 6 roms are great. Lots of options there

Glad to help!
I have a soft-bricked HTC One M8, It happened when I was attempting to return the phone to stock android with stock kernel and stock recovery while relocking the bootloader, none of that is really important though what happened is I had a bad flash and the phone got put into a bootloader loop with no OS. It still had an Unlocked bootloader with S-Off. Once it was in a bootloader loop I was able to download a custom recovery via fastboot commands, the phone can now go into TWRP but it will only boot version 2.7.0.0 - earlier versions don't boot at all and newer versions will boot but are non-responsive/have no display.
Once in TWRP 2.7.0.0 I use push command from adb to load a stock android RUU zip into my MicroSD, I attempt to flash it via TWRP 2.7.0.0 but get a failed response. I have cleared everything and TWRP 2.7.0.0 is having trouble mounting /data/. I tried using using push command through adb to put a newer version of TWRP on my MicroSD so that TWRP could flash it but TWRP was unable to do so. Any version of Clockwork Mod has been unsuccessful to boot.
Essentially TWRP 2.7.0.0 can't flash anything or mount anything for me, I believe I need either a newer version or a different recovery, but no other recovery or twrp version seems to be able to boot correctly.
Any tips, advice, or general help would be extremely appreciated. I try to help myself before asking others and I don't know what else I can do, I have searched the forums for every relevant thread possible and tried many many things to get this to work with no success. Thank you for reading.

That's not how to flash an RUU.zip
This is how it is done.
Make sure that your extSD is formatted to FAT32 first. It won't work otherwise.
After the format, rename the zip to 0P6BIMG.zip (that's a zero, not the letter) and place it onto the root of your card.
Boot into bootloader (Turn off you phone, then boot it up while holding power + vol down) and select hboot if it doesn't do that automatically.
Follow the prompts (vol up to flash ~ power to reboot)
That's it. Super easy.
Make sure to delete the renamed file from your extSD, otherwise every time you boot to hboot, it'll try to update again.

Hello, thank you for your reply, I was traveling for holidays and have been working on the phone for the past couple of days and have run into alot of trouble doing what you say here, any help would be greatly appreciated I'm at the end of my rope with this phone. I got the 0P6BIMG.zip RUU and loaded it onto my Fat.32 formatted SD Card , I loaded the card into the phone and followed the fastboot options to flash, it recognized the RUU and attempted to flash it but said the model ID was incorrect. I opened up the zip and sure enough the android-info.txt file in the RUU does not list my model number and I cannot put my model number into it because it is an htc encrypted zip that will not let me change the file properties of the archive. I thought about trying to put the HTC into developer kernel so that my model ID would line up with that of the RUU info file but I did something (don't know what I did) and now fastboot won't even recognize the device (fastboot devices command shows nothing when phone is in fastboot USB mode).
My mid is 0P6B20000
My cid is VZW_001

My goodness, I looked for this RUU everywhere, I would type in my mid and cid into google, I checked the One m8 archive of RUU's in that XDA thread, I couldn't find it. I don't know how you did, but you just saved my phone! Im booted into Android 4.4.2, receiving texts and everything. I'll figure out if I'm safe to update android later, I'm just so happy to have a working phone again. I gave you a thanks but do you have a contribution link or anything I could give to? You have helped me out tremendously.

I gave you an old RUU link. Sorry.
You can get the 5.0.1 RUU.zip from here if you want to update. It would be good to do it now, since running the RUU wipes your device, and yours is already wiped.
I've sent a PM with a donation link.
Thank you!
