Hi guys,
I already rooted my grand phone and had CWM 6.0.2.3 recovery installed through ODIN.
I recently came across the Philz recovery for our Grand.
Just want to know the difference between the normal CWM and Philz recovery.
Also, the thread states that we can flash this in our recovery as a zip file.
how can we flash a recovery inside a recovery???
sorry if it is a stupid question...But just curioud to know!!!

Well... philz recovery has more advanced options , good interface , etc.. its just another recovery like cwm , twrp etc..
They are all meant for some basic purpose , but some have advanced features .. that's all

You are able to flash a recovery from inside another recovery because the what the zip flashing does is mount your system files, in this case the recovery partition and overwrite it with custom files. So the next time you try booting into your recovery, instead of the old files, your phone reads the new custom files and loads them into the temporary memory for your use.
This concept applies to stock as well as custom recovery. Whenever you hold down the three buttons, the phone is programmed to read and load a particular partition, the recovery partition, into the temporary memory with admin privileges.
So the recovery you are using right now is in the temporary memory, only available till that very session, that's why its not a problem for it to overwrite it's own files

i just flashed cwm to my gnex with rom manager after rooting the phone (without unlocking the bootloader). when i try to boot into the recovery, i get this picture of an android with its chest open and an exclamation. i would assume that the recovery partition was not flashed correctly? are there any suggestions?
thanks for your help in advance!
That just means the recovery was not properly flashed, what you are seeing is stock recovery. Try again via rom manager, or do it manually using fastboot.

Not true. If you have root, you are good to go.
@OP: the reason CWM is not sticking is because you updated your build with an OTA (or link). When you do this, the update adds 2 files to your ROM that re-flash the stock recovery on every reboot. You need to delete them and re-flash CWM.

You still can boot into CWM Recovery without deleting or change the filenames..
Just before you want to boot into CWM recovery...from CWM App..clck flash recovery..after that click Reboot into recovery.. doing these 2 steps..you will get booting into CWM Recovery yet not losing the stock recovery..

Yup, you can do that as well. But you would need to flash CWM every time.
Not sure why you are so concerned with having a stock recovery though. The "I want to be able to get the next ota" reason doesn't make any sense at all for these reasons:
1) The link for the next OTA update will show up on XDA before you get it. So in this case, you need either CWM or root to install.
2) Irrespective of whether you have a stock or custom recovery, you will receive notification of the next OTA update regardless. If you have the stock recovery, just click install. If you have CWM, start ROM Manager, install the stock recovery, and then install the update.

I have a question about how the recovery works. So I am a bit new to this, but does anyone know how the recovery mode works on the T989. So I understand that there is a Download mode and one can use this to flash just about anything such as a kernel or an entire rom. Now what I am confused about is CWM when one installs this using this method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1639673 does it overwrite the built in revovery (I actually am not sure if there is a built in recovery menu, I was looking at the ATT captivate and there is an e2/e3 recovery menu where one can flash things similary to CWM). And if it does overwrite this revocery menu is there a way to get it back? Also one more question, with odin are we able to flash CWM at all?
Thanks

Download mode is the mode you need to be in to use odin ans yes flashing CWM via odin overwrites the stock recovery allowing you to root. I would follow this guide...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194
Odin is a program you will need to flash your CWM recovery...and you can use Odin to revert to complete stock if needed so yes you can restore stock recovery.
Hope I helped

I accidently installed CWM_recovery on boot mode and now when ever i turn my phone on rather then boot the recovery menu pops up..... please guide me how install the stock rom back to my phone.... please help....
Your question is not really clear. You say you flashed clockworkmod recovery and you are not able to boot into a ROM. Did you delete your ROM/wipe system? You need to reflash a ROM from recovery, first download one on your pc (stock ROM available on Xda) and then transfer it to your sdcard. Now install the zip through recovery.
Does that work for you?

You're not telling us much but if I had to guess I'd say you flashed a recovery after formatting system so there's no ROM to boot. ADB push a ROM to your sd card then flash in recovery.

The actual situation is that i was about to flash cwm recovery using galaxy nexus toolkit it asked whether i want to install it on 1.boot 2.recovery 3.user data etc etc and instead of recovery i accidentally selected "boot"... And then whenever i switch my phone on cwm recovery menu pops up instead of my stock rom.

I installed cwm using ROM manager. Right now, there is no problem with phone's working, and I was also able to backup my stock ROM. The problem is, when I flash a new ROM (using rom manager), it ends up in the same stock ROM with factory reset. I can't also boot into the clockworkmode recovery. What shall I do to replace the current cwm version with a working version?
Go into download mode and reflash ur stock rom with odin. You will also have stock recovery back.
Re-root and flash cwm with your stock recovery.
Thats it.
Youre a lucky guy if your phone still wants to boot after rommanager cwm...
Just to make sure, you can flash roms WITH rommanager, but not FROM rommanager.
The ones in their list arent compatible with our gio.

Thank you..
Since I am a beginner, can you please tell me about getting into download mode and reflash using odin.
I can still boot into my stock recovery. I have downloaded 'cwm 6 for gio' from xda. Can I install this using 'install from sdcard' option in stock recovery? Will it get updated properly or end up in bricking my phone?
(Sorry to ask very basic questions)

Try flashing the official stock firmware, then try to flash CWM, or even better Philz Recovery. Since CWM is not sticking, battery pillout and all doesnt help much!

Wrong.
On every flash of any custom recovery on stock ROM, we need to go to the recovery on the first boot otherwise stock recovery or a file in /etc will overwrite it.
The solution is indeed going to recovery on first boot after the Odin flash and flashing Fix-Recovery.zip file.
No offence
