So yeah I've flashed cwm and I've flashed super su. Zip via CWM on my galaxy grand. So my question is how would I factory reset? My phone is going really slow and I'm wanting to factory reset it. How can I do that? can I just do it like that? Or would I have to unroot first and then do it?

Have a nandroid backup? Or you could reflash your ROM.

So even after i factory reset my root isn't going away.. how is that possible.. do i have to unroot this thing to start over? I need this to be like it came out-of-box which i thought a factory reset would do.. i did the reset from CWM Recovery and wiped all data as well as both types of cache and i am still rooted.. any tips?

Thanks, just unrooted, phew
I'm not use to factory reset in recovery wiping internal storage. Because of this I had wipe all my titanium backups prior (now I know to keep it on the external storage).
But this means every time I install a new rom my internal storage will be wiped (unless I backup to external storage) ?

internal storage doesn't get wiped when you factory reset. i'm using CWM from the toolkit (the universal CWM). what are you using?

really? I'm using the same CWM from toolkit. I remember doing a factory reset in recovery and install new rom. I noticed all my files were gone. I'll do it again and see what happens..
I just wipe/factory reset from CWM and internal storage all gone.

Get off of cwm and use twrp. It definitely doesn't wipe internal storage.

As a heads up, I had an issue with the latest TWRP not wiping anything for me, verified it twice. I reverted back to 2.3.1.1, keep an eye on that though.
I think they released a new twp to fix that

What's Nandroid?
In cwm there is an option: nandroid backup. It's a complete backup of your current rom together with your apps and data. In that way if something does go wrong you always have a backup

If you want to make a nandroid backup, make sure you have 500+mb free on your SD.
I'm new to rooting on S3. When updates come out can I just flash the new one on top of my old one without doing a factory reset. I am stock. I don't want to have to reinstall and configure all of my settings. Will it work if I just flashed the odex version? Or can I just use that app OTA Root Keeper?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I have found it to be better to wait for someone on XDA to incorporate the new OTA into a new flashable rom.
Then you do not have to worry about trying to save root or your data, because you were just clear the cache partition and dalvik cache and then flash the update.

So just clear the caches and flash the rom? Will all of my apps, text, homepage icons and settings still be the way it was before the new rom was flashed?

whenever you go back to stock via odin, you have to boot into stock recovery and wipe data. now you know
Usually just wiping cache and dalvik cache fixes the boot loop after returning to stock. That's what I did the one time it happened to me anyway.

You cannot wipe dalvik cache in stock recovery. I know what you're saying, though
