Android kitkat and Miracast bug/issue - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I have been avoiding android kitkat mainly because Miracast doesn’t work well (if at all) on kitkat like it used to be on jellybean roms.
I don’t know if it is a bug or maybe I'm just doing something wrong here.
I'm currently using Netgear Push2TV Adapter ptv3000. The connection between them simply fails on kitkat. It doesn't even connect.
Basically, I'm using miracast to mirror Netflix from N7 to my HDTV.
I recently heard something about kitkat Adreno drivers causing some video playback issues.
Plz advice. Thanks in advance.

[Q] Anyone else having Chromecast issues from Play Music on 4.3?

Hi all,
I'm running the newest Slimbean 4.3 beta with the Slimbean 4.3 GApps installed on my VZ Gnex. I tried to Chromecast from Play Music today, and I get the error Cannot cast to '<Chromecast>' where <Chromecast> is my device's name. I can Chromecast just fine from YouTube and Netflix on my Gnex, and have no issues casting from Play Music on my Xoom running CM10.1.
I was wondering if anyone else was having this same issue. I'm fully aware that running beta software is bound to have bugs, so I'm not expecting the experience to be perfect, but was trying to determine if it's something messed up with my setup or a true bug.
Thanks,
TC
I don't think anyone else here has a Chromecast.... But I would try out maybe a 4.2 ROM, since that's what the Xoom has.

I'm having the same issue with my Nexus 4 running slimbean. Seems like this is a common problem for Motorola users (lots of topic results via search) but can't understand why it doesn't work for a Nexus device running 4.3. All other apps work no problem. Hope it isnt another root block attempt by Google...that would be tragic.

Hi people,
Are you suggesting to get a ezcast dongle or chromecast ? (considering the recent news about chromecast)

Really depends on how and where you want to use it. For home use, either one probably be OK. I don't think you can mirror with Chromecast (not sure about Miracast). Also, I've heard that results sometimes vary; some people have complained about audio delays with Miracast.
If you want to use your Android device to watch video somewhere other than at home (say, at a motel), Chromecast will probably not work because of the types of networks available at hotels. Miracast might work, but you would not be able to connect to the hotel's wi-fi network while using it.
Personally, I have a Xbox setup for streaming video at home that works great, so I mainly use my Android stuff while in hotels. For me, the best bet is a Slimport adapter. This will give you high quality video and will let you stream from a hotel wi-fi network or using 4G. Anything that you watch on your phone, you can watch using a Slimport adapter.

Unfortunately, for those of us in the UK, Chromecast is not yet (officially) an option...

From my understanding, EZCast will mirror anything displayed on the source device to the TV but Chromecast is limited to specific apps. Is this correct?

I've just read this article which explains the differences:

I think I would go with Chromecast. Although I do have PS3 as my media streamer.

Note 8 to LG Smart TV, what are my options?

I'm currently running rooted stock Jelly Bean 4.1(with plans to flash official Kitkat) and I'm looking into getting a smart TV most likely an LG. The model I'm considering has the following inbuilt 'smart' share options:
Google DIAL
MIRACAST Screen Share
MHL Screen Share
WiDi
The TV has these connectivity options:
WiFi Ready(wifi not built in, needs adapter)
WiFi Direct
Simplink
I know DIAL is a new thing without much traction right now, WiDi is exclusive to Intel devices. I'm particularly keen on wireless screen mirroring to the TV, so my questions are:
-Can I connect seamlessly via Miracast with my Note 8?
-Which currently available android version on our device works best for screen mirroring(4.1, 4.2 or 4.4)?
-Is Allshare any specific app necessary to mirror my screen or is it natively supported by the ROM?
-Will it be beneficial to buy a chromecast? Will it work with the Note 8?
I've scoured through the Note 8 forums and screen mirroring isn't mentioned a whioe lot and often just in passing. There are many posts concerning allshare not working with rooted stock ROMs, but many of these are old posts from last year. There's hardly mention of screen mirroring on Kitkat. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about LG being 100% compatible... I have a 2009 Samsung with DNLA and AnyLink+
The AnyLink+ connects any Samsung device with automatic turn on and input change. Plus it will turn off the TV if the device should turn off.
From what I see the LG should do what you need as AnyNet+ is really not a requirement.

Thanks, so how is Miracast implemented currently in the stock ROM? I'm on JB 4.1, all I have is allshare. Is Miracast available as a separate feature in 4.2 upwards?

Miracast is the feature called Screen Mirroring on the quick action bar.
As for Samsung Link / All Share, there are some latency issues but with Chinese Miracast/DLNA dongles some provide very fast response to limit latency.
All Share is the same thing as Link... both use Samsung's Miracast... depending on your Samsung updates, you should have an All Share firmware update installed to the tablet. Once you connect with the All Share device the firmware is automatically updated.

I think I have to come clean on something, I'm still on JB 4.1.2, and all I HAD was allshare, I deleted/debloated it after rooting. So I don't have the app anymore but I want to know if the more recent stock ROMs have a Miracast function separate from Allshare that can connect the tablet to a miracast enabled TV.

TW rom with miracast support

I am still on the original 4.0.4 firmware as never felt the need to upgrade. Now there is a compelling reason. My media player WD-TV-Live-Streaming now supports miracast for screen mirroring on TV. Is there oficial touchwiz roms on which miracast works?

BUMP!
might be better to ask somewhere devoted to miracast.

Netflix and Miracast

I have tried multiple miracast receivers (a samsung TV and a push2tv) and neither one will show video on netflix. I do get audio, but no video. I have tried some AOSP based ROMs and Stock sense based as well and nothing seems to work. Does anyone else have any experience with this or information as to why it might not be working? My first assumption was HDCP but it looks like others are reporting that netflix works fine for them via miracast (although most of that was from old reviews with different phones).
To be more specific, just the video itself is black, i can still see the player UI components and other system things, just not netflix video. I've also tested Plex, Youtube, and Twitch, and all of those work just fine. However i don't believe any of those streams are protected, so that could be a differentiator.
Bump.
I'm having the same exact problem on my Nexus 6. Please help!
ezcast & miracast
Found this thread - only one that deals with hdcp - anyways the support site for ezcast is stating that since I have used a custom rom (CM and Sense) that the HDCP was removed off my phone.
Is there a fix for the netflix/miracast issue? Different ROM?
Just looking for some help.
thanks
-brad
Some problem here with Zenfone 2.
I have this problem with a ezcast dongle.
But it does work fine on my LG webos 2.0 TV. So I think the problem is with ezcast app.
