I have a codec called ARM v7 Neon, but my tablet's processor is Exynos 5 Octa.
Since I am having stuttering issues with HD video streamed over AC WiFi, I figured maybe the codec was an issue.
If I aim my AC-enabled laptop at the same HD video file over the same WiFi connection it plays on Windows Media Player without a hitch.
MX player is good for about 25 seconds of "good" playback before the audio clipping (?) sets in. It's not horrendous - the speakers are legible and the image looks perfect. Pausing playback for five seconds and then resuming gives another 25 seconds of good playback.
So.... have I got the right codec?
Some other issue?

Can you tell me what the total bit rate is and is in an .mp4, .mkv, .avi or .mov?

But wouldn't that beg the question of why the AC-capable laptop connected to the same router in the same location can play the same .MPEG with no problem?

It is a .MPG file recorded straight from the over-the-air stream.
Windows.Properties.Video says Total Bitrate = 16,408kbps, Data rate = 16,216kbps
Windows.Properties.Audio says Bit rate = 192kbps, Audio sample rate = 48 kHz
I've got a trimmed version (2 minutes/200 megs) that I could post somewhere, but to reproduce the problem it would have to be viewed over 802.11AC.
Video looks a-ok, it's the audio that is problematic. Over N, audio is almost unintelligible right from the start. But over AC it's perfect for about the first ten seconds and then playback has to be paused for five seconds to get perfect playback for another 20-30 seconds. But even when it's "bad" under AC, it's not nearly as bad as under N.
But I have to keep coming back to the fact that an AC-capable laptop has no problems at all.
Exynos is an Arm proc.... The problem is not the codec.

Video stream playback issues are hard to track down so it may take a lot of trial and error. So get ready for a lot of questions.
I think this could be an audio codec issue not video.........
If you give me a link to that trimmed file I can test it as I have an AC1300 router.
Are you making these video files or are you downloading them? If your making them can I ask why are you using .mpg over say .mkv or .mp4 as I believe those have better audio codec choices.
When you go into your tablets wifi settings what is the link speed in Mbps?
Are you the same distance from the router when you use the laptop and the tablet? Are you streaming this from your computer or from a drive on the router?
Have you installed an app like Wifi Analyzer to see what your signal stream looks like.
Have you tried a few of the other video players in the play store like the ones below to see if they may work better.

They are coming right off the air via a SilconDust tuner.

It's all over the place. Seems like it returns some recent figure rather than the max speed.
I've seen well over 400kbps and the Ubiquiti "UniFi Controller" app used for setup and oversight of the WAP is reporting "40.0M" right now as the tablet is playing the video.
Are you the same distance from the router when you use the laptop and the tablet?

Yes, approximately 3 feet - on the corner of a kitchen table next to the TV stand where the WAP lives.

I've tried the native Samsung player, MoboPlayer, BS Player, and a couple others whose names escape me at the moment. On all, the playback was worse than MX Player's. I will try the other three on the list and report back.

OK, got the file.
Voice to lips is off on desktop pc, converted to.MP4 voice is right on and file went from 200mb to 145mb with same compression. What model SilconDust tuner are you using as the picture is great. So is your stream from a recorded file on your hard drive or a direct live stream from your SilconDust tuner.
How are you getting the signal to your tablet, with an app?
Streams to my SM-P600 using MXplayer on a 5GHz N router voice is out of sync a little but no audio clipping for entire 2 minute clip.
Will update later about the 5GHz AC router as it is at my home.
Download the newest XBMC alpha and try that one.

All I can find on the devices is "Silicon Dust HD HomeRun Dual ATSC Tuner". No model numbers. I have two boxes. Each box has two tuners in it.
I use SageTV to schedule and record. As I understand it from the SageTV docs there is zero processing/transcoding going on. Sage just takes the signal from the HD HomeRun and writes it to disc. Voice/video synch for the local PBS station is not always that wonderful - even when viewed directly on my TV.
How are you getting the signal to your tablet, with an app?

That one may have gone over my head.
I am using FX File Manager to link to the Windows-shared drive on the PC where the files live. When I "Open" a .mpg file, Android turns it over to MX Player unless I do an "Open With". So I *think* the answer is that the tablet app is reading the file directly.

Unencumbered by any knowledge of this stuff, I'm starting to think I have a problem with my tablet. If it plays OK on your P600 over the AC router maybe you can share the exact filenames of both your video and audio drivers and, hopefully, there will be a difference against mine....

I wound up with something called xmbc-13.0-Gotham_alpha11-armeabi-v7a.apk.
But MX Player Pro | Settings | Decoder | General | Custom Codec | (navigated to folder containing abovementioned .apk) threw "Cannot Load Custom Codec. Use Default Codec Instead."
I mean install the apk and try to play the video with XBMC.
Definitely best player out there.

Can you say what "drivers" you are using for audio and video?
Quotes because I am not cure of the terminology.... "Codecs" ?
I'm thinking that if it plays ok on your P600 over AC, the problem must be in my P600 - especially since it plays ok on my Windows laptop over AC.
We are both using MX Player, right?

Please tell me were your files reside (computer, laptop, router??) and how your laptop gets and plays them VS. how does you tablet get access to those files.
My files are stored on a hard drive that is attached to a USB port on my AC router, my tablet uses MediaHouse UPnP / DLNA browse to gain access to those files and then MX Player opens the video file for viewing.

The problem file resides on a 2-TB hard drive that is connected to a Windows 7 PC.
I *think* the laptop and the tablet access the file in the same manner: via a Windows connection as in NET USE - but I don't know enough about Android (or, for that matter, Windows) to say the methods are exactly the same. All I can say for sure is that, in both cases, I specify a DeviceName\ShareName to make the connection. The tablet is using v2.3.0.10 of the "FX" file manager with the FX "Network" add-in. I get the directory list in FX, tap on the file name, and MX Player takes over.
On the laptop, I'm using Windows Media Player.

I tried your file again using FX file manager and I get the same results, smooth playback entire time.
The 2tb drive your using is it a portable drive? How many hard wired devices are sharing your network? How many wireless devices share your network?
I have a tivo, TV and a computer hard wired on my network and only my table uses my wireless connection. Have you tried using Media House that I mentioned in one of my other postings, you may get a different result and it shows album art and shows a photo from video as an icon.
Ive seen so many mixed report regarding Miracast. I really like the idea but am cautious. From what i understand Netgears Push 2 TV PTV3000 is considered one of the better dongles. Anyone got any recommendations or are currently using Miracast on thier Tab S? Not entirely sure if it is even compatible. Would appreciate any feedback on your experiences and any recommendations.

I got it when I had my Surface 2, I've continued using it with this Tab. Connects perfectly. Only thing I've noticed is that after watching a few HD YouTube videos, the sound goes out of sync with the video. I've yet to fully investigate this phenomenon, whether it be the YouTube app, the Tab, background apps etc. but can't see it been anything to do with the Netgear. I'm off on holiday now so won't be able to look into that for another week.
P.S. not sure if you could use Chromecast in the same way, but if so it would be a cheaper option.

No. And it's the 10.5
My DLink Miracast adapter works perfect with the Tab S 8.4. Remember to update the firmware after you get the adapter home. Else it'll lag like hell. After the update it works like a charm.
And Tab isn't rooted.

After the recent Tab S firmware update, it simply stopped working. Samsung, what did you do?

After a firmware update of the Miracast dongle, it started working again. Darn.
Ah, glad it's not just me then. I tried casting to the tv the other day (I'd just rooted the day before that) and I got an incompatible hardware issue or something, thought I'd broken something. I might have had an update in the background and it's ****ed it.
I'm using the Netgear PTV3000.

if u are using cw/twrp/philz recovery and/or the sky high kernel then the custom images have broken your wifi...u can either install my SuperSamung V2 rom with the fix already included or edit your build prop by adding the line wlan.wfd.hdcp=disable then save & reboot
Sorry to revive an old thread, but i'm considering getting a Miracast dongle to feed powerpoint presentations to an office projector from my Tab S. Couple questions though:
1. Will it work?
2. Am I better off going the wired micro-usb-to-hdmi route?
I'd really rather go wireless so I can walk around and not worry about yanking the cable off in the middle of a meeting with top execs.
Why miracast instead chromecast? Chromecast works perfectly from the tablet or pc and has better support.
I just see miracast as a poor mans version of chromecast.

For screen monitoring of e.g. games, photo viewing with Gallery of QuickPix, or tv streaming using an app provided by my cable company
I understood Chromecast is supposed to be especially good at showing content in the cloud. I forgot the exact list of supported services... Things like YouTube, picasa, Spotify, radio streams, Netflix? In this case, your tablet "refers" to the content, and chromecast does the actual downloading/streaming. Screen mirroring was added as an afterthought, and last I checked (hmm, 6 months ago) subject to a lot of disclaimers, supported only on some devices.
I understood Miracast is true screen mirroring, but the few receiver devices I looked at, mention technical limits, like (example) 15fps, which makes me doubt their use for video mirroring.
Thus I haven't bought anything yet :-\
More testimonies of miracast & Chromecast users could be interesting!
screen mirroring works fine with chromecast as long as you are not doing something effected by input/screen lag. Watching video from an app that is not natively supporting chromecasting (showbox...) is relatively simple. If you are on this forum you shoild have the ability to do it, just maybe not someone who can only facebook on their tab might have small issues. Casting pictures, slides, presentations or websites is fine too since there is no need to worry about the lag.
Gaming is annother story if you the person playing os wanting to use the tv screen then you have to pick a game with care. Any game that requires good to impossible timing (flappy anything or one finger death punch) is a great way for a masochist to have fun with out a sadist being in the room. Games that do not need fast timing like turn based strategy games or certain types of puzzle games are fine and work great. Even quite a few emulators work well like this but with the same game choice restrictions.
The screen lag you get is not anything like low fps it is input lag from the time difference it would take to simply send the information to your tablet vs the time it takes to send the information to your router and the router to send the information to the chromecast. I would assume miracast would suffer frome the same issues, though I haven't tried it yet.

Is both screen + audio sent to the Chromecast then? Or are there audio/video sync issues... If video happens on tv but lags behind the video+audio of the tablet...
The audio went out of the tv when I did a cast using cast screen. Most of the casting I do from my device uses uPnPlay a wonderful free app that is as good as most if not all the paid upnp apps (bubble upnp/ allcast). I have never had any issues with audio desync using that app.
when I did a sceen cast with show box I did have a streaming hicup (a slight stutter) once or twice but that may have been due to my old router (wrt54g) and not so much the chromecast.

Never had any sync issues casting with chromecast.
In most situations you would never have to screen cast as chromecast can pretty much cast anything web or local natively.
Presentations is really the only use I can see for screen casting.

as I mentioned earlier, my TV cable provider, has an app that streams live TV. We have a 2nd TV in the bedroom for which we don't have a decoder box, but I hope I could screenmirror the TV stream that I can get through the App (audio&video).

It should work fine for that then. You may get the occasional hiccup depending on many things but for the most part I do not see any reason why it would not work for you.

So I caved and bought an Chromecast (CC)
Findings:
- screencast works fine most of the time. Transfers audio and video, and keeps good sync. But some applications cause a crash and reboot of the tablet (e.g. mirroring of MX Player playing a video)
- casting youtube works fine.
- the app I was most interested in (a TV streaming app of my local TV cable company) in fact does both Chromecasting, and works in screen casting mode. Hurray)
- good wifi reception is needed on both the tablet and the CC
and a general point
- according to reading around, it's not possible to use the CC without active internet connection, not even for local screencasting. Technically, it seems unnecessary to have an active internet connection on the WLAN that connects both the CC and the tablet (or pc), for local casting or screencasting. I'm thinking about buying a miracast dongle like EZcast or similar. I were wondering if anyone has tried enabling Miracast on the device and if they have, does it support Miracast multitasking. Meaning you can select what you want to stream, like a home movie for instance, then while it's playing on the TV you can check emails, send message or other stuff on the G4. Feedback about this much appreciated so I can decide whether to get a Miracast dongle or not.
I haven't tried any multitasking, but I have used the screen mirroring with a Roku 3 with no issues.
Roku isn't something I'll be considering.
I'm on the Three UK network and they have just put a cap on how much you can tether. It used to be unlimited data but now I still get unlimited data, but can only tether 4gb. I've been getting through 40gb and more per month in the past as I like to watch YouTube on my 42 inch TV at the bottom of the bed. It just used to be a case of tethering from my device. Since miracast runs off WI-FI Direct then it shouldn't be using my tethering data. I'll be just getting a cheap dongle with only miracast in mind.
Roku runs off wifi too. They don't use internet to stream internally. I stream videos to my Roku every day using Allcast app. So much that my "home" tablet has been my dedicated video streamer.
I haven't mirrored my device much since I think it is useless when the tablet or device is right in front of you but it does work. I guess you could use a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse to control it remotely.
Good thing about the Roku is the Roku remote which allows me to control my streaming. I can start a stream then use the Roku remote to play, pause, rewind, fast forward, etc. Since we use the Roku for primary content at my house, everyone is already familiar with the remote. Just initiate the stream on the tablet side and then put it away.
I can tell you right now the miracast option only mirrors and requires the screen to be on. Turn the screen off and the miracast stops. Also you cannot stream videos while doing anything else.
With the Roku and Allcast, you can start the stream and continue doing other things, like email and texts. Phone calls will interrupt the streaming though which is why I use a dedicated tablet for this use.

I have used Miracast to send my phone to the screen in my vehicle (Concept flip down TV). It works off wifi direct and worked fine.
Just click SEttings->Share&Connect and under screen share there is a miracast section. Click that and your device will show up. Works with everything I tried it with.

Yes, it works if the app supports it. The built-in videos app (not accessible via a shortcut but comes up when you stream from the browser) does support it. I don't know about other apps (youtube, netflix). When you start the process the screen is mirrored but as soon as the video starts playing the phone screen becomes a controls screen only. When you hit home and exit out of it the phone gives you instructions. You can also edit the notification panel to add a Miracast button for quick access.
I really hope I am not the only one with this issue. I recently purchased the official Samsung MHL 2.0 cable and noticed that when streaming YouTube or any other video through the regular web browser the audio cuts out and back in every few minutes. Although it is something I can live with it is rather annoying. Is this a known issue with this tablet?

My Wifi kinda sucks so unfortunately Chromecast won't do me much good. I'm going to try a factory reset and if that doesn't work I'll have to return the tablet.
Maybe try a different browser or use semper vidlinks or vget to stream online videos through a media player, highly recommend mxplayer for this. As for you tube I would use the app not the browser.
Yea I think the YouTube app works, but I don't want to deal with ads (also don't want to root while under warranty)
I tried both Dolphin (adblock plugin) and NoChromo which blocks ads by default, audio still cuts out for about a second every so often.
Give vget and mxplayer a go. You can also use web video caster to do the same thing. Between the 2 almost any online video is playable via mxplayer.
So couldn't get vget to open up any videos in mxplayer or vlc, it keeps saying video unsupported, any advice?

You need to make sure that you are on the page where the playable video that you want is. Semper vidlinks is good for extracting links from web pages.
Try the page below it contains several different types that should all play with vget or web video caster.

Open the page then select share from the menu options in your browser, select vget, you should see the orange download arrow for each video link. Click any then select mxplayer.
For web video caster, do the same but when clicking the video link, select options then open with.
I managed to route the video through VLC but the issue still persists. I ended up returning the Tab only to find that I am having the exact same issue on my second one! At this point I am going to say it may be a compatibility issue between the tablet and my crappy comcast modem/router. Are you by any chance able to recommend a good router to go with this Tablet?

Your router? Does that mean you are streaming media to your device and then to your TV via mhl? Have you tried playing a media file direct from your device to the TV?
No just streaming media on the tablet and hooking it up to the TV using the MHL cable. I don't know what else to do, I tested my Galaxy S5 and it plays fine, so I know it's not the cables.
EDIT: Yes videos stored locally on the tablet play fine on the TV, the problem only occurs when streaming anything.
How is the tablet connecting to your router, 2.4ghz or 5ghz?
Doesn't your TV support dlna? Most modern tv's do.
I am not sure about the tablet connection, is that something I should look into?
Our TV is almost 5 years old, we got it right before smart TV's really became a thing

Sometimes it helps to switch bands and/or Wi-Fi channels as interference can affect the connection.
Look at your tablet Wi-Fi settings it will tell you which band it is connected to.
Yea I changed channels a while ago and I also changed both DNS' to google's
How are you streaming to your tablet, which app are you using? Does the streamed media play OK on your tablet?
All streamed media be it via the browser, XBMC or VLC has the audio cutting out for about a second roughly every 5 minutes or so.

So it's the same playing on your tablet even without mhl?
Sorry had to do a quick test, videos play fine when not connected to the TV. Could it be an incompatibility issue between the TV and/or Soundbar? I know the cables are good because I tested my phone.
So the issue is tab to TV? Have you tried any lower definition movies?
Also does music play OK on its own or still stutter?
I tried looking up this device on xda, but nothing yet, so i thought i'd post here first.
since it uses an audio jack, do you guys think you could plug this into your cars aux port, and stream using your phone? or is it dependent on wifi only?
It is wifi, not bluetooth. Might work in guest mode. I'm very interested in the device, but want to use if for DLNA streaming from my home server if at all possible.

Yeah I'm still waiting for an answer as to if it supports 320kbps for high quality streaming from spotify. That would be the main advantage of it over a bluetooth receiver.
I'd love to know if it does support that if anyone can find out!

I tried using a 1st Gen Chromecast but ran into the issue of the device's requiring an actual internet connection (not simply a wifi connection). My guess is that Chromecast Audio will similarly require an internet connection, but am wondering if there is a workaround?

A lot of talk, no conclusion about this yet. Some suggest tethering the phone should work. I've got one on order, should know next week.

I am working on getting mine to work in my car today. I bought it yesterday and didn't have much time to mess with it. I had it working as I tethered through my phone and using my gfs phone to play music but I'm going to see if I can get it to work without tether.
Got it working but not perfect
So the main thing is IT WORKS!!
Its just buggy getting it started but after that it plays fine for the whole ride. Here is what I did (notice: must have working tether on your phone to get it to work)
I am running a nexus 6 with Chroma ROM. Also I'm using Spotify to play my music.
Steps I did to try to get it working.
1. I first went through the setup process on my gf galaxy s5 and updated the chromecast through my tether.
2. I hooked everything up in my car.
3. Turned on my phones WiFi and press the button on the Chromecast first and then connect to the WiFi that my Chromecast gives out.
4. Then open the Chromecast app and make sure it sees it. (Mine still says it needs to be setup even though it already is. Don't worry about that)
5. Open Spotify and in the devices area it should say nearby cast or something like that. Try to connect and it will ask for a pin. Ignore that and hit cancel.
6. Then turn on your hotspot on your phone. It will then show your Chromecast name correctly in Spotify and you can connect and play music. (Must leave your tether on)
All in all I got it working without having a separate wireless connection to connect both of them and have audio playing through my car audio. I tried it twice now and it has worked.
Also the Chromecast app will not show its connected even though you're playing music through it. I have a screenshot of it at the bottom.
Nice - I have a ground-loop issue in my car and can't charge my phone the same time it is plugged into the stereo - this might solve that. I'm using mine to add streaming to a bedroom system, but if I like it, I may replace the streamer box on the home stereo, which cuts out on FLAC from time to time.
UPDATE: you do not have to go through all those steps everytime. I've tested further and found that it is much easier.
After you already have it setup in your car, to connect do these steps:
1. Turn on your phones WiFi and connect to your Chromecast audio.
2.After a few seconds turn your hotspot on(do not turn off the WiFi at any time).
3. After a few seconds Spotify will see your device and work perfectly.

I have had my Chromecast Audio working for the last day. I am using it with BubbleUpNP to stream audio of of my DLNA server on my home network. Working well, more reliable than the Soundmate that I was using. Going to order a micro-toslink SPDIF cable to use my on DAC. It isn't a DLNA renderer, so it won't work with software that is expecting UPNP/DLNA, but BubbleUpNP is working well.
I got one of these today, and the Hardware is really nice. It has a decent DAC, good WiFi, Dual (Analogue, Optical) output, so all good on that front. It also plays 24bit 192K FLAC from Qobuz without trouble. You should however make sure to turn the "High Dynamic Range" setting on in the CC app!
However, I don't like the way it's handled. I'm used to running Logitech Media Server with am Odroid U3 as Server and a couple of Raspberry Pi units with Hifiberry DAC/Digi/Amp addon boards, and with that setup starting music in the mornings is easy. I turn on the power, and that's it, after the Pi has booted, the music starts playing, choosing the last Playlist or Webradio Station I used when I turned it off. No need to even touch my phone.
With Chromecast I have to jump through a lot of hoops to actually get it playing any music, and that's it's biggest failure IMHO. It won't automatically reconnect, it won't resume playing where it left off, it's basically just a better kind of BT dongle (using Wifi instead of BT).
This is a huge waste of potential! Sadly, I cannot use this neat piece of Hardware with Logitech Media Server, because it doesn't work as a DLNA Renderer, and LMS can't cast to Chromecast (since that only works from Android/iOS/Chrome OS).
So, while this COULD be great, it's currently badly underachieving. Maybe someone will work out a way to fix this by rooting CC and installing Squeezelite on it, of by some other means. There is always hope!

You can use it with your DLNA server, but you need to manage the Chromecast with BubbleUpNP on your phone. Not perfect, but more stable than the renderer that I was using.
I got mine yesterday and I must say that I am very happy with it. One thing though, when I play music via YouTube (via casting screen/audio in the CC app) the sound volume is really low. It is much higher when I play music via Spotify. Is there a way to boost the output from the phone? I tried the hardware buttons of course
Workaround for the Volume being too low: Use a cast-native app like Spotify to crank up the Volume.

Yes, I see your point, but IMHO it's more than just a WiFi equivalent of a BT adaptor because, whilst you CAN stream from your device/locally with the right app, most "standard/consumer" use cases have the Chromecast streaming content direct from the Internet which is controlled by the app in your device. Your device doesn't do the streaming, saving power, you don't have to stay in range, etc. If I start steaming using Spotify as the app, for example, the Chromecast will continue playing my playlist even if I close Spotify on my device.
True. However, it still lacks a lot of features other multiroom systems offer. This little dingle has loads of potential, but Google will have to work hard to make it shine...
