So I went over and read the issues on CM.org and found MHL, dock audio, and JB modems don't work with any newer version of CM. MHL and dock audio don't worry me but the lack of JB modems does. I'm on a rooted stock ROM right now and the only complaint I have is poor battery life. I won't even get a full work day from my phone without charging in the car or at my desk at work.
Is it worth installing Cyanogenmod on my phone despite the shortcomings?

Legacy voice mail flags do not work on CM if you need that support.
And the speaker sound is horrid... Really depends on your preferences. I love loud sound, so I stick with TouchWiz.

Oh, right. I forgot about that. And the annoying text message I'd get after each VM comes in. Maybe I'll stick to stock with a custom launcher then.

If you want to stay stock/rooted....you need to put greenify and maybe DS battery saver on you're device... this should help with the battery drain... also look into any wake locks that might be contributing to the drain.
After doing this... if you would like to get even better battery life, as well as great sound... I suggest flashing project x... it's tw based and unbreakable, IMO. It's my daily driver, when not testing roms for somebody.
Let me know if you want to flash it and I can walk you through it... that way you get a smooth, clean install
Good luck and have a nice day..

I've gotten well over 24 hours on Project X with 4+ hours screen on time.
Damn really ? How because i used project x and only got about 8
---------- Post added at 10:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:45 AM ----------
Well I can't use it now because my phone won't except any jb roms
+1 on what Ryan said... I get the best battery by far on project x.
I'll hunt up some screenies I took..
If you notice.. I had airplane mode on. The reason for this was because I was getting bad service at my new job. So I would put it into airplane mode when I didn't need to use it... on average, about 3 hours on a normal work day.

Buttery smooth and very fast so far. GPS locked on faster than I've ever seen it, even inside the house.
Nice... Giving this a whirl tonight Thank you Zinx!
Battery life so far seems terrible. Check my stats below. Other than that it is running very good. ADW app drawer seems to open up SLIGHTLY slower than before. That's about it. I'm gonna try running without setCPU and see if battery life helps.
I wiped cache/dalvik/battery stats. only flashed 3 nightlies before this.
Thanks for all the hard work ladies and gents!

Best Rom I have Found is MIUI. But want to have more updates. Would like to know where you get the weekly updates or better yet can some one tell me how to add it to ROM Manager then I can just get the update there.
Here is what I have Tried so far
WarmTwoPointTwo RL5 (Great Rom if you like Sense) Good Job
EivO 2
Ava-froyo
Koni Elite
CM7 w/4G (Really Great Rom) Just don't like the dialer
HTC EVO 4G got First Day. Rooted 2 weeks ago.
More updates? MIUI is updated weekly, which makes it one of if not the most often updated ROM there is (excluding CM nightlies). Anyhoo, I agree with you wholeheartedly that MIUI is the best ROM out there and would like to personally welcome you to the MIUI family Not sure about ROM Manager because I prefer to do everything manually (not to mention Amon > Clockwork). Here is the link to the MIUI forums where you can grab the updates.

Thanks Downloading now ..... Been trying a bunch of differant kernels as well.

Any word if there will be 4g added soon?
MikFroyo is also one of the better (if not best) Sense roms.
I use Miui as well.
No need to make this thread though lol...

I know they are working on adding 4G but I have no clue when it will happen. The problem is that the ROM is actually developed in China and is closed source, the guys who give it to us just do the porting and translation. So it's up to the Chinamen to add the 4G, and since there are no EVOs in China, I'd imagine it's not a top priority for them.
4G is a big deal here in the usa. Is there any want to donate to them to get the job done sooner?
Thanks in advance
Donate to the Chinamen? I'm not sure. I'd post that ? over at the miui-dev forums. Keep in mind, they didn't build the ROM for the USA or even for the EVO. It is made for the N1 and the awesome devs here are the ones porting it. I would just sit tight, we'll have it soon enough.
Ok, this build is pretty much the same. But I love it. Iphone 4. Theme
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The bulk of the differences between builds are under the hood, but new features do get added all the time. I know there is supposed to be some big UI overhaul coming soon but couldn't tell you when.
Love love MIUI, just wish it had better battery life. Phone is losing 10-12% / hour just sitting idle, wifi or 3g doesn't make much difference. I need to try another kernel for sure, just not sure which one and hoping the update this week (if it gets released for Evo) fixes some things.

Go to miui-dev.com and join in the fun. If you like tweaking, flash the mods and try out some themes.
The mods they have posted are kinda blah.
One bug I found is the time on the text messages is like 6 hours off on the popup and
where it displays all of the threads. When you go in to the message it displays the right time. Little bit of a pause on lock screen.
Overall this is the Best rom I have tried.

That's not a bug, it's a setting. Go to the text app, hit menu then scroll to the bottom and hit advanced. Scroll down to where it says Sort SMS by date and make sure that slider is off so it says sort messages by time received locally. That should clear that up.
It's time for a change...I think some might like the changes others might not..
I've created an App. (it's my first one so no laughing!!!)
It contains the same options you know and love and a couple of new ones!!!
The idea of creating an App is to cut down on the number of files I have to tinker with each week. It was taking too much time. This way I only have to modify the SystemUI.apk and the Launcher2.apk and I'm done.
Those users who couldn't use this Mod because of the changes to services.jar should now be fine..
Couple of things to note..
The option to Hide the Debug Icon is missing. I'm trying to work out a way of hiding the icon without modifying services.jar
If you change the battery Top Bar you might notice a delay of a few seconds before it updates.. (Just me being Lazy)
The Auto Close feature is now standard with the Launcher so the option to enable it is no longer needed.
There are three version
ESCenter - Center Clock Version
ESSwitched - Center Clock, Notification and signal icons switched.
ESRight - Standard version with clock on the right as normal.

i strong heartedly disagree with the above poster. I'm on MIUI atm, and I get one full day of use out of my SGS, with HSDPA enabled /always connected, lots and lots of browsing, phone calls, sms, yahoo and whatsapp messenger online almost 24/7, some games, some BT transfers and some Wifi.
then again, I do know how to customize my SGS with black themes and various other settings to extend battery life...btw, no underclocking or undervolting..
no way you're gonna get the same level of polish and the same experience on Eclair..
just my 2 cents...
cheers!

I would have to also tell you, yea there is...
Just because there are people like yourself who extremly are satisfied with it and consider it a top rom, doesn't mean everyone see it in the same light.
I stuck with MIUI with every version from 3 to the latest 5.3, it was my first ever custom rom, and as much as I wanted to like it I finnaly decided to give up on it for the foreseeable future. Even for someone who tried to like it was biased toward it it is more a gimmick rom for entertainment, than proper sgs rom you'd consider serious. Even tried to get my friends on it while I was on it, everyone hated it.
In my opinion it has great potential, but its still in its infancy. It is way to rough and misguided to be a good solid rom. Even going to a base 2.2 rom just rooted and lagfixed beats MIUI in almost every aspect. I finnaly don't feel like breaking my phone again. Almost every aspect of MIUI is different, which is where the appeal comes from, but somehow the difference is rarely for the better and it manages never to be as good even an original rom in terms of usability. At the moment I would consider it the poorest choice out of the the popular roms.
Since you will probably ask, the biggest downfalls off the top of my head I had with MIUI is unrelenting and completely unsolvable battery drain issues. This alone makes the rom not worth taking seriously. Calendar, the way you set your alarm, messaging, contacts etc, having to press double or more buttons to get to particular areas the stock phone does in 1, little things like that.
Laggy menus is another one.
I dont even want to get into how bad this rom is with the camera. Horrendeus software, menus etc, recording upside down, and on top of that it completely incapacitated the video recording of the phone. VErsion 5.3 and the videos still record at 3fps and the frames jump back and forward every 2 seconds as well...
heres miui on a good day for you.

Adding an extra option isn't that difficult. Getting that extra option to do what it's supposed to do is the tricky bit!!! )

I can also confirm that auto rotation is not working properly. Camera button has been working fine for me and battery seems normal for CM based ROMs.

Alright folks, here's another update... 4.3 is officially merged!! I just did the last part of it and caught with CyanogenMod as far as frameworks goes.
Reference here to see what I'm talking about: IllusionProject Frameworks/base
Of course there's loads of things to iron out, but the overwhelming part of merging 4.3 is now behind us!
I'm still not going to promise an ETA, but I will be doing what I can to get everything functioning the way it needs to be. Thanks peeps for remaining patient through a busy part of my life recently. There's quite a bit in store for 2.5. I may even release a alpha version of 2.5 so you guys can get your hands on a 4.3 build with all the cool nifty features and such :victory:.

I'm look forward to when the new version is released
Same here. Just tried illusion for the first time. Took me a bit to find the right kernel to get it to boot with WiFi and signal, as well as recovery and root. I used the boot.IMG from championswimmers latest aokp. Now everything is working great, and battery life is amaaazing. The problem I have is no auto rotate, and I'm a YouTube JUNKIE, so this tiny screen business is killin me!! Lol. But I'm really liking this key lime pie look, and the transition animations look super slick.

Get an app that lets you switch between orientations as a temp workaround, hopefully this gets fixed in the next version. And thanks for figuring out the kernel, I've been thinking about trying to find one that works when lo and behold someone's already done it!
The only thing I wish would get fixed right away is the inaccuracy of the battery meter, I find that if I reboot with a significant portion of the battery used then it reports the level as being higher than it actually is(50% goes up to 70% or so) which has lead to me running out of battery a few times. I believe this has been fixed in recent CM builds if I remember correctly.
:banghead: duuhh.... lol. I never even thought about an app to control rotation. I just figured if it didn't work, it didn't work. Thanks for the tip. Found an app in no time.

A few years ago this seemed to be limited to either Cyanogen or a couple other ROMS, I had performance issues with CM9 and used a custom ROM instead. Now it seems like everyone has their own flavor and builds. I'm currently on a 4.1.2 ROM, I think it was SlimBean.
I'm just looking for a close-to-stock 4.4 ROM for Sprint Epic 4g Touch, that is stable and works. Does anyone have a ROM you have tried and would recommend?
I'm leaning towards Mookie or CM11
Thanks and sorry for the noob post.
Its not kitkat, but have you checked out Project X ? I am running KitKat on my nexus tab. Though have solid custom rom options that am bouncing between , really wish I could install Project X .

I had not, but I did some googling and it looks pretty nice. I may download it and give it a try.
I already installed CM11 VILLUMINATI. It was a bit tricky, but after following the steps at the bottom of page 77 of that thread, I got it running and it seems fine so far. CM always takes some time for me to get used to, so I'll run it for a few days and see how it goes.
Hope it goes well. Must say, battery life is crazy good and the highly customize-able launcher (can save settings and implement when flashing updates et cetera) @bilgerryan created are awesome - like borderline time for a tattoo time awesome. Not to mention the folks in the forum are cool - good people. Anyway, good luck with everything.

Thanks! So far, I only have a few issues with the build. I can't figure out how to get rid of the Google search bar at the top and I can't figure out how to scale the number of columns/rows on the desktops. Other than that, the lack of 4G is hardly noticeable, even here in Silicon Valley. Can't get Kies to restore my data via USB, going to try WiFi connection tonight.

From my experience, you can't do anything with kies unless you have the version of android that's originally on the phone. So it's either Kitkat or 4.1.2, bloatware, and kies. I think we both know who the clear winner is here! I've also been using the VILLUMINATI ROM and I've had exceptional battery life and fast response from my phone at the same time. As for the Google search bar at the top, I think that is permanent unless you download one of those custom theme app thingies (can't remember what they're called), but doing that kinda defeats the purpose of having Kitkat for me, as I absolutely love the new white theme with everything. I've also noticed that from using those theme apps before that they tend to drain battery fast.
EDIT: As for 'what rom I would reccomend' it would have to be VILLUMINATI, even though it's the only one I've used so far. It works, and it's good. I'll be using this rom until there is a better update somewhere, or if I find a game breaker somewhere.

You know there are custom TouchWiz ROMs out there don't you? With tons of extra features and no bloatware. I say try my Project X and see if you still go with the bug-filled AOSP ROMs with quiet mic volume and speaker volume. BTW Kies is useless, try using Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox next time.

Ok, I'll take a look at your rom later, thanks. Also, I have never really used kies except just to see what it was, I was just referring to the post I quoted.

Here are my two cents. Personally, I like VILLUMINATTI better than Mokee, mainly because Mokee has a weird thing it does when scrolling lists. It makes the lower list items really small, and expands them to full size as you scroll down a list. Cool looking once or twice, but not something I can handle on a daily basis. They are both extremely fast and smooth ROMS, and they use very little RAM, like 30% less! Just make sure to get the best ICS modem for your area (mine was FE22), update the GPS config file using FasterFix, and load in Textra so you can activate MMS easily. Of course, you'll loose 4G and dock connectivity with either ROM.
However, I can't use the 4.4 ROMS right now because they both have the same two bugs. Firstly, the Orientation Sensor doesn't respond correctly. Secondly, they don't communicate well with Google Glass (no phone calls). So I went back to Touched By an S4 ROM, which is a TW based 4.1.2 ROM that performs really well "out of the box".
Once those two bugs are fixed I'm definitely switching back to VILLUMINATTI CM11 because it unleashes this phones true capabilities.
Given the above offerings, coupled with the fact that only the individual user can make their own determination as to what is most stable for their device, going to close this.
XDA is not a support site as it relates to asking what is most stable, best etc, for roms and or kernels. This is because threads like these become places of arguments and trolling commentary.
All users are expected and encouraged to do their own research and review of development threads to arrive to the answer they need.
